As we head into the spring and summer months, we look forward to the lighter and brighter nights this time of the year brings with it. But the aim is to simulate this lovely lighting in a UK wet room all year round. Lighting is often overlooked when it comes to designing a wetroom, it’s easy to become preoccupied with bath, shower and tile choices. But to get a beautiful and highly functional wet room, it’s important to think about it right from the beginning of the project. There is so much choice out there, so making sure you choose the right lighting to suit a client’s overall style and need for functionality is key. Spark off your imagination by taking a read of some of the bright ideas below you help you choose the right lighting for your wetroom.
Size Of The Room
Evaluating the size of the room, vs the natural light available is key to choosing the right lighting in a wet room. Naturally, the larger the size of the room, the more lighting it will require. However, how bright the wet room will be is really a personal choice, some prefer a really bright light whereas others will prefer a more ambient feeling. It’s important to gain a good understanding of the overall mood and feel your client likes, and balance this with providing enough light in the room to meet these needs.
Natural Light
When working on installing a wet room, it’s really important to assess the levels of natural light available in the room. More often than not, bathrooms do not get as much access to natural light as other rooms within the room, so getting the lighting right here is key. From a design point of view, you can use mirrors to your advantage by putting them in places which naturally reflect light throughout the space, then use artificial lighting to support.
Focus installing lighting in areas which require extra attention, a great example is within the shower; nobody wants to shower in the dark! By installing lights just above the showering area, you’re able to provide light from a functionality point of view as well as an aesthetic one; lighting flowing down on a shower area has a really beautiful effect. Alternatively, spotlights are brilliant when it comes to highlighting areas which need extra light. This way, the client can choose the areas that they want to be bright, and can also change this later down the line should they want to. Downlighting, on the other hand, is fixed, so if the layout of the wetroom was to change in any way, the lighting would need to also.
Style
Both the functionality and the overall aesthetics of the lighting you choose for a wetroom will be highly dependant on the client’s personal style of wet room. If the client wants to achieve an uber-modern and high tech finish, then there is a range of lighting and smart tech you can propose to them. How about making a splash with installing a shower head with lights? Or allow them to embrace their inner Hollywood with mirror lighting, or through installing bathroom cabinet with lights. A really popular choice in 2019 is to install led strip lighting, this can be suited to any style and personality.
Alternatively, if your client prefers a more classic or vintage style you can suggest lighting that meets their needs from a functionality point of view, with their chosen hardware and accessories to accentuate their personal style.
Wetroom Use & Functionality
Upon deciding what lighting to opt for within a wet room, it’s important to assess how and when the wet room will be used, so that you can make smart choices to accommodate this. For example, if a key area of the wet room is a beautiful bath consider installing mood lighting, or options to create more ambient lighting to create a relaxed and subdued feel in the space. On the other hand, if the shower is key highlight this with the correct lighting such as in the shower head or as a spotlight above. Perhaps you could suggest floor or accent lighting so that when it’s placed under fixtures it not only shows off the furniture but also allows an individual to use the wet room without switching the main light on.

What our clients think of us
My client bought a range of Wet Room Unislope Systems from our local retailer, Bathworks. We struggled to find anyone to come to site and take responsibility for the waterproofing until we came across Wet Room Materials. They were willing to stand over their tanking system and more than helpful throughout all stages of the installation from site survey and room preparation to installation. A 10 Year no leak fully insured warranty gave me the confidence that we were dealing with a professional organisation. I would highly recommend these guys and will certainly be using them going forward.

Smart, stylish bathroom lightingTake the role of your bathroom light fixtures to the next level by adding options that combine a classic or modern design with smart functions (i. e. dimming) and crisp yet soft illumination from energy efficient LED light bulbs. Choose options in mirror lights, vanity lights, bathroom ceiling lights or wall lights that do more than just clearly show you the way when flossing or applying makeup. After putting your personal stamp on any of your bathrooms, you’ll be giddy to say “Down the hall, second door on the left” at any dinner party you host. Get ready to enjoy glare free reflections and the stylish radiance of clever bathroom light fixtures that will impress any guest.
Select the right type of bathroom light fixture for your needs and style Be the fairest of them all with a mirror with lights on the wallEnjoy sharp, glare-free illumination with bathroom mirrors with lights whose design efficiency features a light source built into the trim of white circular or rectangular mirrors with curved edges. Also choose from mirror cabinets that blend white particleboard with sleek glass, metal and crisp lighting.
There’s nothing immodest about stylish bathroom vanity lightsChoose LED bathroom vanity lights that sit flush atop bathroom cabinets or freely “float” overtop as they extend out slickly covered in chrome or encased in white, powder coated aluminum and plastic. They provide warming, even lighting around your mirror and sink.
Let light and your style shine down with bathroom ceiling lightsSelect modern bathroom ceiling light fixtures that feature glowing orbs oflight attached directly to or extending downwards from the ceiling cup or shade holder. Go with the timeless look of glass shades paired with anodized aluminum etched with concentric circles (in black, gray or gold) or holders in black that are made with dense polycarbonate plastic. Some options offer the same ambient lighting whether attached to the wall or ceiling. Some of our bathroom ceiling lamps can be turned on/off and dimmed wirelessly with remotes or with a smart phone app.
Find the perfect balance in bathroom lighting with flexible wall lightsReady to be placed above, alongside or below your bathroom mirror is a range of stylish options in bathroom wall lights. Placing a glowing tube of warm white light with a black casing on either side of your bathroom mirror is one option. Or go with a string of orbs in a nickel-plated casing that playfully bejewel your wall. With a light touch of the finger, you can dim or intensify the light source. Other options combine dangling opaque, white glass shades with the classic, industrial look of steel holders and arms that softly drift downwards.
How to light a small bathroom versus a master bathroomThe first consideration for any size bathroom is having adequate task light. Direct light from vanity or wall lights is best for grooming or applying makeup, as opposed to overhead light that can cast shadows. From there, bath bars and ceiling lights are great for larger bathrooms. While LED lights cast a diffused light that’s great for illuminating bigger spaces, choose dimmer options for those relaxing bubble baths.
nuances of choosing fixtures for the bathroom and toilet
In all our apartments and houses there are rooms in which the atmosphere in terms of the degree of air humidity almost always exceeds the norm. Therefore, when lighting equipment for such premises, the main task is to ensure the safety of the operation of lighting devices in conditions of high humidity.
Electricity strikes instantly, so it is necessary to eliminate the risks of such damage as much as possible. This can only be done by competent installation of lighting in such premises and the right choice of lamps, which must be resistant to moisture and airtight. Today we will talk about such lamps, their protection classes, application options and selection rules. nine0003
But first, let's define what rooms are considered wet. Dry rooms include all rooms in which the humidity level does not exceed 60%. If the humidity in the room even slightly goes beyond this value, it is already referred to as objects of high humidity. All rooms in this category are divided into three types:
-
wet;
-
raw; nine0003
-
especially raw.
Simply damp include kitchens, manufacturing plants, heated basements, pumping stations, and so on. Their moisture level can range from 60 to 70.5%. In such rooms, condensate on the walls or steam does not appear constantly, in a small volume.
Unheated basements and cellars, as well as a number of production workshops, are also classified as damp, the air humidity in them exceeds 75%, and this level persists for a long time. nine0003
The last type of wet rooms are especially damp. These include greenhouses and greenhouses, since the level of humidity in them is close to 100%. The main sign of especially damp rooms is the presence of permanent moisture condensate on the walls, as well as on the surface of the floor and ceiling.
Of course, it is impossible to install simple lamps in rooms with high humidity. Waterproof models are needed here. The main feature of any fixtures that are intended for installation in rooms where the level of humidity exceeds the norm is the presence of special internal structural components. Depending on which protection class they belong to, such components prevent water from entering the luminaire and preventing direct contact of moisture with the lamp and with electronic contents and conductors. Such design features contribute to a significant increase in the duration of the service life and prevent the occurrence of dangerous moments, including a short circuit, breakdown only to ground, and various fires. nine0003
Lighting devices for wet rooms are distinguished by a number of important features, namely:
-
rubberized parts are used in their design;
-
effective insulation of conductors;
-
complete tightness is ensured;
-
the design provides for an extremely tight fit of all nodes. nine0003
Remember that the mere presence of an airtight bulb in a light fixture is not a sign that it is suitable for installation in a room with high humidity. At the junction of the plafond with the body of the device, designed for operation in wet facilities, a sealing gasket made of elastic rubber is mandatory. And the product passport or a label placed on the package must contain information about the value of the IP index.
Varieties of moisture resistant lamps
All lighting devices intended for use in wet areas are qualified according to three key features:
Bathroom wall and ceiling lamp Aqua 1x60W E27 230V metal painted silver
Depending on the method of installation, lighting fixtures are found in three constructive types - built-in, overhead or suspended. Design features largely determine the object of application. On this basis, moisture-resistant lamps are divided into: nine0003
-
ceiling, which can be used under the ceiling and are made as standard chandeliers or spotlights mounted on brackets;
-
floor - they are produced in the form of floor lamps and autonomous ceiling lamps and mounted on the floor;
-
desktop - they are produced as free-standing lamps, such lamps are mounted on toilet-type tables, stands for installing sinks, etc . ; nine0003
-
wall-mounted - this type of lighting fixtures is universal in application, it is most widely used. Moisture-resistant wall lamps are usually produced in the form of shades or lanterns;
-
furniture - used in equipment for lighting cabinets, wardrobes and other interior items installed on wet objects.
According to the type of light source, moisture-resistant lamps are divided into: nine0003
-
incandescent lamps - for rooms with high humidity, only light bulbs are used, the power of which does not exceed 40 W, they calmly tolerate current surges in the network, as well as elevated air temperatures. At the same time, such lamps produce a lot of thermal energy, this can cause the plastic body of the lamp to melt, so incandescent lamps are not recommended to be used directly in saunas or baths;
nine0009 -
LED lamps - this type of light source is the most economical of all existing today. The LEDs are compact and fireproof, they are powered by a low-voltage DC network, which makes them completely safe when used in high humidity conditions. Important advantages of LEDs are their brightness and long service life, long service life. A fly in the ointment in the characteristics and qualities of these lamps is still a high price; nine0003
-
halogen lamps are quite bright light sources with a long service life, but they are highly sensitive to fatty stains that can appear on the bulb during the intended use of the device, and their overheating in case of illiterate installation and inappropriate operating conditions.
fluorescent lamps - they are characterized by economical energy consumption, long service life, sufficiently high light output and comfortable color temperature. The disadvantages of such lamps include a quick failure with frequent overvoltages in the network, a high price, delayed ignition;
The quality of illumination of objects with high humidity depends both on the number of luminaires used and on the place of their installation. Therefore, when arranging the lighting of such premises, such important factors as the illuminated area, ceiling height, the need for zoning, and the presence of partitions at the facility are taken into account. In addition, lighting fixtures must match the style concept of the interior of the room. nine0003
Security requirements
Increased requirements are imposed on the protection of lighting devices intended for installation in rooms with high humidity from moisture and dust. The marking of such lamps necessarily contains 2 important characteristics: IP-index and an indication of compliance with a certain humidity zone. Let's talk about them in more detail.
Protection indices
The level of dust and moisture protection is indicated by the IP index, followed by two digits, for example, 65. The first digit six corresponds to the dust protection class, 2 indicates what protection class the device has from water. nine0003
Dust ratings
Moisture levels
Wet areas
To simplify the task of choosing a moisture-resistant lamp, a classification of degrees of protection was created for areas of premises with high humidity. The humidity zone index on the packaging or in the luminaire passport sets the limits in which the luminaire can be used:
-
IP68 - a lamp with this marking can be immersed in water, operated in any conditions; nine0003
-
IP67 - the device is completely sealed, it can be used in absolute humidity;
-
IP44 - the device is resistant to intense evaporation, to accidental ingress of jets and flying splashes; .
-
IP24 - luminaire with condensation protection, can be installed above the sink.
Luminaires with an index less than IP23 are designed to be placed close to wet areas, but still not inside them. nine0003
Many modern models of moisture-resistant lamps are marked with three numbers, the last of which indicates the degree of impact resistance of the device. This indicator is not of great importance if during the future operation it is not planned to systematically expose the light device to intense mechanical stress.
Types of fixtures by mounting method
According to the installation technology in a wet room, lamps are divided into three types: built-in, overhead and suspended. The first can be safely embedded into any surface, whether it be a ceiling, walls or floor. It can also be furniture or elements of decor and other interior design. nine0003
Recessed luminaires come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Their installation is simplified by the fact that the case is usually equipped with special brackets.
Surface-mounted luminaires are mounted on walls and ceilings. They are used when the surface does not allow creating a cavity in it to accommodate the built-in device. There are standard and decorative modifications of this type of lighting fixtures.
Hanging lamps are less common in wet rooms, since for their installation it is necessary to equip suspensions or hooks, as well as special fasteners if the device is not mounted on the ceiling, but mounted on the wall. In addition, their use is preferable provided that the ceiling height in the room is sufficient, which is not always the case in our bathrooms, baths and other wet rooms. nine0003
