So, you've decided to renovate your home. Great! You probably have plenty of thoughts from kitchen décor ideas to bedroom decorating ideas, but there's a smaller space you're probably overlooking within all your design plans: the staircase. For many houses, the staircase is one of the first things you see when you enter your home, so you want to make sure it's beautiful to look at. These staircase ideas will fill you with inspiration, from inspiration for painted floors to expert tricks for hanging pictures. No matter what your style is, there's a plan on this list that's perfect for your preferences and your budget.

For instance, while there are plenty of farmhouse decor ideas, you can certainly find tons of modern inspiration here as well. One of the greatest parts about stair decorations is how a few simple additions can go a long way. Just adding a few paintings or other adornments can completely transform your staircase. Of course, you could go big and completely change the wallpaper (try removable wallpaper for a less permanent fix) or paint color for a bigger difference that will make a major impact. It's all up to you how you decide to implement these creative staircase ideas.

How to decorate a staircase in a house, decorating a street staircase, how to decorate a wall along a staircase

In design projects, decoration is thought out in advance. Serial production systems are carried out in the basic version, so the decor will decorate the simplicity of lines, make the models more expressive, not like others.

Decoration of the elements of the march

Figured balusters and supporting pillars in the fences are decorated with carvings and artistic forging. The laconic design of the combined stand made of wood and metal does not overload the stairs, looks stylish and modern.

Screen railings made of glass already attract attention with their airiness, ability to reflect light. They can be decorated with tinting, decorated with drawings that repeat the lines of interior design.

An unusual handrail, for example, snail-shaped or carved in the shape of a flower, can also be a highlight.

Decorating the risers also has an unexpected effect. Registration by milling, carving visually facilitates a closed march.

Decor - finishing

We decorate the surrounding space

Additional lighting on the stairs is installed for the safety of movement. But various lamps do a good job with the role of decoration:

Luminaires should not be too bright to avoid blinding. You need to mount them so that all steps are evenly lit.

Beautiful panels and paintings decorate the wall along the stairs. To make this technique work as a decoration, select images of different sizes, think over the scheme of their placement, for example, alternating horizontal and vertical panels or using contrasting colors. The frame should repeat the style of the march elements. Use for it the same materials from which doors, window openings, mirror framing, furniture are made.

Family photos and household items look appropriate in country-style houses - painted clay dishes, wooden spoons hung on the wall near the wooden stairs.

Platforms for rotating structures are decorated with natural flowers and figurines. Make a composition of flowering plants in bright flowerpots. For the march in the house, select shade-loving plants that do not require frequent watering. Forged stairs on the street can be decorated with trellises for climbing vines.

To design the staircase system, they use such a technique as wall cladding with a fabric that contrasts in color or texture. Wallpapers look spectacular.

Stairs can be decorated with additional drawers, lockers, which serve as a place to store things and a stand for decor.

ideas for everyday and festive decoration

The presence of a staircase in the interior of a two-story house improves the aesthetic quality and functionality of the space in which it is located. The structure is not only an important structural element connecting two floors, but also a decorative element of the interior. Modern in-house buildings are represented not only by traditional mid-flight structures, but also, depending on the method of fastening the steps, they can acquire a very different configuration.

In addition to the shape and material of manufacture, its appearance is influenced by decor, which can be used for a festive event or be an integral part of the staircase and the space around it. How to decorate a staircase in a kindergarten, arrange it for a holiday or create an interesting everyday home decor will be described in this article.

Choosing locations

with winder steps

The material of manufacture and location in space can be different, and is selected taking into account the area of the room, the stylistic direction of the interior and operational features.

Based on the configuration and area of the space, the structure should be selected as follows:

  1. In the corridor, a U-shaped or L-shaped mid-flight structure with a turntable or winder steps is a rational choice. Usually these are wooden structures, the design of which is combined with the color scheme of the room;

U-shaped

  1. In a spacious hall, you can install a straight wide . For a classic interior, wooden structures can be used;

Spacious

  1. When placed in the living room, it is recommended to give preference to structures located along one of the walls . In this case, it is possible to functionally use the space under the march, in which you can place household appliances, paintings and photos, or organize a recreation area, study or extra bed;

Straight

  1. When located in the kitchen, it is desirable that its design has transparent railings so that it appears lighter . The space below it can be closed in the form of a pantry, or have built-in lockers. Alternatively, under the stairs with a sufficient height, you can arrange a working area of the kitchen;

in the kitchen

  1. In a small utility room, the pull-out design can be used to save space.

Foldable

Design

Enclosure

Depending on the location - in the kitchen, hallway, bedroom or living room, its design, material and decor must be in harmony with the design of the space and its color scheme.

Marching classic

For a classic interior in the Empire style, a straight structure made of dark wood is suitable. In the luxurious monumental style of "Baroque" decorative, having a smooth angle of rotation, marble or stone steps, rounded railings and carved forged railings will look harmonious.

Carved

In a modern loft-type interior, which is especially popular lately, an open staircase with one stringer will be appropriate. Railings can be made of steel, and tempered glass fencing.

Modern

For a minimalist interior, you can use the fastening of steps on the bolts, which will create the illusion of weightlessness of the structure. To achieve a more spectacular perception, such a staircase may not have railings. Screw types look no less expressive in the interior, which can have both a classic look and an ultra-modern one.

How to decorate the hallway space with stairs

Bookcase

A spacious entrance hall or hall in a country house is the first room a person enters from the street. The first impression of the house is created precisely from the perception of this space, so its design should be approached with all responsibility. The staircase in the hallway must also be framed and decorated with great care.

in a spacious hall of a country house

The entrance hall is the connecting link between the rooms on the first floor, and the structure connects the rooms vertically.

Therefore, when designing a hallway, the following must be taken into account:

  1. The color scheme must be the same, or have harmoniously combined shades;

Despite the large construction area, the construction looks light and unobtrusive in the interior of the living room

  1. The staircase is a logical continuation of the hallway. That is, in color and material, it should be combined with the material for decorating doorways, with frames for mirrors, decorative frames for paintings and photos, with furniture material;

Harmonious design

  1. It is important to observe not only the combination of design and furniture in the hallway in terms of style, but also their configuration. Helical, spiral, with smooth curves, should be complemented by furniture of similar shapes. For example, a round pouffe will complement the screw variety, and a classic square or rectangular one will complement the traditional marching design;

The configuration follows the shape of a decorative vase

  1. Hallway lighting or lighting should also match its style. In an interior with a modern design, LED step lighting and spotlights on the ceiling are suitable. In a spacious baroque hall, a multi-level chandelier would be appropriate on the ceiling.

Decorative lighting

The hall where the stairs are located can be decorated with mirrors, tall houseplants, poufs, a table with a flower vase and furniture for storing clothes.

Mirror surfaces

In a small hallway, the staircase must be safe and functional first of all.

Rational use

So that the space of the corridor with the stairs does not look dark and cramped, you can use the following design techniques:

  1. A large mirror on the wall will visually expand a narrow space and make it brighter;

Even a small mirror can enlarge the space in the hallway

  1. Under the building you can organize illuminated decorative niches that can also serve a practical function. In a niche, you can install shelves for small things, mirrors, put decorative vases or figurines, place paintings or photographs;

Decorative niches in the design of the staircase

  1. Space can be made in the form of a capacious rack;

Large Shelves

  1. Stairs should be made of light-coloured material and have adequate artificial lighting. The illumination of the steps is carried out using LEDs or lamps mounted in the risers.

Free wall along the stairs - how to decorate?

Design option

In order to harmoniously design a free wall along the stairs, it is necessary to take into account the overall color scheme of the hallway space, and the combination of decorative elements with it. You can highlight a free wall with a contrasting color or make it the backdrop for decorative elements.

Decorative panel on a free wall

To decorate a wall, you can use the following:

  1. Color or black-and-white photographs or paintings placed on the wall are a classic design option. It is recommended to use not one large image, but several small or medium ones in the form of a collage. Frames may vary in shape and size, but they must have the same style solution, like the images in the photo;
  1. Niches and shelves can be placed on a free wall if it is wide enough. The location of niches is recommended on the wall along the flight of stairs, and shelves - in the corners of the turntables. Niches can be decorated with lighting, figurines, vases or flower pots, and decorative plates or baskets with climbing plants can be placed on the shelves;

Statues in decorative niches repeat the decorative elements in the design of the hall

  1. The painting itself will make the structure a decorative element of the space. You can use contrasting colors in the design of the steps against the background of a plain wall, or play on its contrast with the material. White color can be combined with bright accents or contrasting black;

Painting

  1. The wall can be decorated with various finishing materials - photo wallpaper, decorative plaster, interior paint, artificial stone;

Wall mural on a free wall

  1. Lighting also plays an important role in the design of the wall. You can use designer lamps of an unusual shape and manner of execution;

Fence lighting

  1. Do not forget about the decorative elements made by one's own hands - these can be all kinds of crafts, panels, a collection of painted wall plates and other decorative compositions placed on a neutral background of the wall.

Creative way to decorate the fence

Decorate the stairs

Decorative inscriptions

When decorating, you can use various techniques, which will be discussed below. The main thing when decorating is not to deprive it of its basic qualities - safety and functionality.

Choice of colors

Decorating with bright ornaments

The color palette should be chosen at the stage when designing steps is being developed. Traditionally, the choice is determined by the main material of construction and the surrounding interior. However, non-standard solutions are possible, allowing you to get an unexpected effect when decorating a classic, unremarkable design.

Decorative appearance

You can use the most common trick - playing with contrast. Decorating is done using two opposite shades. This may be the use of light and dark tones belonging to the same color, or achromatic black and white.

Black and white decoration

Painting the riser white is a classic solution in contrast with the dark tread, on the surface of which dirt will not be so noticeable. The opposite performance will look more impressive. Another effective option is to use bright colors against a neutral background.

Unusual design

Contrast can be achieved by using different colors of the metal elements of the stairs and shades typical of different types of natural wood.

In a minimalist interior, colored contrasting details will be out of place. At most, we can recommend a combination of black and white - or a monochrome staircase.

bright colors

Important! For safety reasons, the steps should not visually merge into one surface.

To create a positive mood, you can use rainbow-colored steps in the interior. The planes of the risers, or the edges of the treads for the entire length of the march, can be painted in the colors of the rainbow.

Painting steps

Using decorative stickers

Fun decorative stickers

When decorating stairs, you can use stickers or patterns. Such decoration can be made in the form of ready-made vinyl stickers, self-adhesive film, wallpaper, paint and stencils. Work can be done by hand. The instruction is given below.

Free wall decoration

A self-adhesive decorative film pasted on the surface of the riser is the easiest way to change the look of an indoor staircase. This material is sold in the form of ready-made stickers or roll material.

Decoration of risers with decorative stickers

To place the sticker, it is enough to remove the protective paper layer from the adhesive backing and apply the products to the selected surface. When using rolled material, you will need to show creative thinking and imagination in order to cut out the necessary image using a stencil.

It is possible to cut out a fragment according to the size of the riser and paste over it completely. It should be noted that the price of self-adhesive film is quite low.

Self-adhesive sticker for free wall decoration

Important! The surface on which the self-adhesive film is to be applied must be clean and free of grease.

The stickers can be used to decorate risers, treads and adjacent walls.

Self-adhesive film options

Wallpaper is an alternative to self-adhesive film. The risers can be pasted over with wallpaper that is used in the design of the walls of the hallway, or you can use others that are combined with them in a pattern, style and material.

If the walls of the hallway are covered with non-woven or vinyl wallpaper, then paper wallpaper on the pillowcases will only spoil the overall picture.

Wallpapering the risers

An equally interesting solution would be to paint the risers and treads with paint and stencils. The image must match the style of the interior. These can be classic ornaments, or provocative inscriptions in a modern design in the form of stamps or graffiti.

Decorating the risers with a themed film

Stencils can be purchased ready-made, made to order or made by yourself using ordinary cardboard.

Additional stair decoration

Stair cladding

In addition to the traditional ways of decorating steps and staircase structures, there are extraordinary solutions. We are talking about additional decorative elements in the form of overhead rugs on the steps.

In addition to the decorative effect, this solution allows you to achieve a practical solution to some of the features of the operation of the stairs.

Options for designing steps using textiles

It should be noted that such elements can be made in the form of individual overlays for each individual step or in the form of a track fixed on the entire march.

Decorative walkway in the design of the flight of stairs

The use of such a decor allows you to achieve the following effect:

  1. Thanks to the insulation of the structure of the stairs, it becomes comfortable to move without shoes;

Stair treads

  1. Stairs run silently during operation;

Winder treads can be designed with separate pads

  1. Maximum comfort is achieved through pleasant tactile sensations;

Neutral tint of treads

  1. Provides a high decorative effect of the stair structure and creates a cozy space atmosphere;

Carpet in the design of a marble staircase

  1. The safety of the operation of the stairs is ensured due to the anti-slip properties of the material.

These pads can be purchased off-the-shelf or made from old carpet or carpet scraps. When using a solid canvas, it is fixed with special holders. Depending on the color and material of the coating, you can create a luxurious, solemn or warm and cozy atmosphere.

You can make your own multi-colored treads

A cheaper and more practical option is to use silicone or vinyl treads, which are attached with an adhesive backing. These overlays can have different shapes and colors.

Decoration of railings and balusters

Decoration of stairs with delicate textiles and flowers to create a romantic atmosphere

Enclosing structures of typical stairs are made in the form of simple balusters and handrails, but even the most concise design can be transformed by some decorative techniques:

  1. For decorating handrails, as well as for steps, illumination in the form of spotlights fixed on support posts or LED strip can be used;

Decoration of stairs with LED garland

  1. A traditional attribute of the New Year and Christmas holidays - a garland, can also become an everyday decoration of a staircase structure. This will create a permanent feeling of celebration. You can use flower wreaths, ribbons, bells and decorative figurines;

Tinsel Garland

  1. Another option is to paint the railings and balusters with paint. For wooden balusters, tinting and varnishing are recommended. Metal stairs can be painted in accordance with the color scheme of the interior;
  2. A special decorative effect can be achieved by using tempered glass or forged railings in the wooden structure of the stairs. Tempered glass can be transparent, tinted or decorated with a pattern. Forged fragments can be painted;

Decorative tempered glass steps

  1. You can decorate the railing with textiles. This requires the use of light floating materials, which will give the fences an elegant look and solemnity. The fabric can be combined with a flower garland or flower bouquets. It is possible to use colored ribbons;

The design of the staircase railing with natural fabric in combination with living plants looks elegant and harmonious

  1. Decorative paper products provide a bright and eye-catching way to decorate a staircase.
