Living room wallpaper ideas to refresh your lounge space

When it comes to decorating our spaces, wallpaper is an easy and effective way to add colour, pattern and even texture. The right living room wallpaper ideas can completely change the feel of the room, making it a simple but striking update.

These days there's a style to suit every home, so there's something out there whatever type of living room ideas you're aiming for. So whether you're a minimalist, maximalist, or pretty much any kind of 'ist', there's sure to be a design perfect for you and your lounge.

Wallpapering your walls, wall, or even half a wall is no longer the time consuming, fiddly job it used to be. And with more and more brands supplying both wallpaper and paint in complimenting shades, giving your living room a fresh make-over is a job that can easily be taken on yourself.

Living room wallpaper ideas

It's now easier than ever to transform your living space in just an afternoon using living room wallpaper ideas, so all you have to do is to choose your favourite look.

1. Wallpaper above the dado rail

If you've fallen for a patterned paper but don't want it to dominate your space, reconsider where to wallpaper. Stick to covering only above the dado rail, keeping the rail itself and the lower portion painted in a complementary tone.

This is also a great technique for small living room ideas as the pattern won't overwhelm by covering from the floor to the ceiling.

2. Enhance a retro room

Mid-century living rooms are having a serious moment right now - who among us hasn't picked up some retro furniture? Enhance the feel of the era by choosing a vibrantly coloured print for your living room wallpaper ideas. Yellows, especially, echo this time period, and helpfully boost light levels.

3. Use a photorealistic mural

A surprisingly simple living room idea is to opt for adding photorealistic mural wallpaper. You can plump for whatever design appeals to you, but by choosing a design which echoes the nature outside you'll help blur the indoor-outdoor boundaries. This will make the room seem larger, brighter and feel altogether more calming.

4. Reflect your flooring

Work your wallpaper in tandem with living room flooring ideas for a considered finish. Choose a design which reflects some sense of your flooring, perhaps the colour, pattern or texture. As well as opening up the room, this will add a cool design element to a simple project.

5. Wallpaper the lower half of your walls

Keep your bank account a little happier by looking to budget living room ideas for your wallpaper. Papering only the lower half of the room is a great way to save on costs and you'll need a lot less material to work with. This is also a useful trick if you only have a small amount of a discontinued wallpaper available.

6. Choose a classic floral print

Once seen as fussy and dated, or solely for country living room ideas, florals are back in the lime light and back on our walls.

'Floral living room wallpaper ideas wrap your walls in nature and tend to incorporate a number of colours,' notes Melanie Adams, Global Manager, WallpaperDirect . 'This can be a great way to really imbed your colour palette into the space to make it feel cohesive yet natural.'

7. Pair blues and greens

'The old adage may go 'blue and green should never be seen', but we disagree! Mix just about any blues with green (plus their sophisticated love child, teal) and you've got yourself an effortlessly harmonious blend that's vibrant yet calm and soothing at the same time.

A lot of Arts and Crafts styles of living room wallpaper ideas will have this combo, adding a neat nod to a stylish tradition.

8. Co-ordinate with your paint

Choosing wallpaper doesn't mean that living room paint ideas aren't also an option too. The two can actually work beautifully together, especially if you have any kind of panelling on your walls, but you want to pair your paper with the right shade.

'When pairing a wallpaper with paint it's important to match the paint with a hue used in the wallpaper,' advises Zoe Hopgood, Designer, Graham & Brown .

9. Try a terrazzo print

Terrazzo is going nowhere as a trend, seen on floors and tiles alike. This cool pattern also works really well on wallpaper, giving the illusion of texture and adding just the right amount of pattern.

The design comes in any manner of colourways, so choose for pebbles to be in a tone that's complementary to, without overwhelming, the rest of the space.

10. Match with your window dressings

For a totally cohesive look, why not match your wallpaper with your living room curtain ideas? It's the ideal way to extend your chosen wallpaper design over window dressings and ensure there is no break in the pattern.

Many brands and designers will produce wallpaper, fabrics and accessories in the same print, so it's easy to keep to a matching look. If opting for full length curtains is a little too much pattern for your taste, try going for a couple of cushion covers in a matching print to your wallpaper, so the design is echoed more subtly around the room.

11. Amp up a rustic scheme

(Image credit: Future PLC/ Dan Duchars)

Use living room wallpaper ideas to add character to a decor scheme, such as in rustic living room ideas. Use a striking design to enhance the natural elements of your living room, such as woodland scene to add character to a cottage living room with exposed wooden beams and low ceilings.

Choosing a wallpaper design around your existing decor will create a subtle yet stylish approaching to decorating.

12. Invite texture to walls

(Image credit: Future PLC/ Joanna Henderson)

Where you're looking to add interest to wall surfaces but not wanting fully-on pattern, seek an alternative design that emulates the look of a distressed surface. By doing so your walls will ooze character and interest without overpowering the scheme by layering too much pattern.

13. Team turquoise with teak

If you have a fair amount of wooden furniture in your living room, from sideboards to dressers, coffee tables, side tables and perhaps even a hardwood floor too, it might be in serious need of some colour to lift the scheme. Punchy turquoise living room wallpaper ideas will bring vibrancy and life to your room, without becoming too bright and garish.

14. Zone a larger space

(Image credit: Future PLC/ David Giles)

Use living room feature wall ideas to help zone a larger space. Use wallpaper to define areas, such as a reading nook, home office, or bar area. With open-plan spaces so commonly used, this is a useful way to visually break up these larger areas.

15. Make art from wallpaper

(Image credit: Future PLC/ Tim Young)

Make a statement of a wallpaper by framing it. This creative idea allows you to use a wallpaper in your living space, in a more imaginative way. It's great for not only adding a quirky touch to the decor, it's also great if on a budget. Only one roll will be required to cover a smaller section of wall.

16. Smarten up with pinstripes

(Image credit: Future PLC/ Simon Bevan)

Create a tailored, designer look in your living room with pinstripes – they look just as smart on your walls as they do on suits. Choose soft greys or pastels so the scheme doesn’t feel overly masculine, however.

17. Clad a chimney breast in wallpaper

(Image credit: Future PLC/ Simon Scarboro)

Embrace architectural details that lend a sense of charm to the space. Cover either side of living room fireplace ideas with wallpaper to create a focal point in your space, and without having to commit to a full revamp of your room.

18. Welcome in nature

(Image credit: Future PLC/ Spike Powell)

Embrace the great outdoors and cover your wall in botanical beauties. Foliage, birds and florals are all traditional ways of dressing walls and will instantly make a space feel smarter. As classic as this is, it can stick work with modern living room ideas. Simply choose a design with a crisp white or dramatically dark background (rather than old school pastels) , depending on your aesthetic.

19. Proceed with painterly pattern

(Image credit: Future PLC/ Adrian Briscoe)

Introduce brushstroke-style patterns in bold colours. Drawing on the work of French painters Bonnard, Monet and Seurat,  painterly wallpaper pays homage to artistic spirit.

Impressionist-style living room wallpaper ideas effortlessly showcase the graduated, ombre-effect that we have all come to know and love.

20. Wallpaper furniture

(Image credit: Future PLC/ Dominic Blackmore)

Who says wallpaper needs to go on your walls? Make a striking statement in your living room by wallpapering a key piece of furniture, such as a sideboard. This is also a fantastic way to upcycle an old item that might otherwise end up at the tip. Go for wood or brick-effect wallpaper for an on-trend trompe l’oeil look.

What type of wallpaper is best for a living room?

It can be tricky to know where to start when choosing a wallpaper for your living room, but choosing a design that you love and excites you is a good place to start. You might also want to consider the size of your room and also its positioning.

'When choosing your living room wallpaper ideas it’s important to note whether the room is north or south facing,' advises Zoe from Graham & Brown. 'If the room faces south then it will get a lot of sunlight, allowing the use of the cooler colours in the spectrum, however a north facing room will need warmer colours to make the space feel cosy. Using a patterned wallpaper creates a focal point for the room – try pulling colours from it using accessories to create a cohesive interior style.'

Also think about how you want to feel in when you're in your living room and how it is being used. Is it a place to entertain? To relax? To multi-task as a home office? Once you know how the space will be used, you can start to think about whether you want a more invigorating, colourful design or a calming, muted one.

Where do I put wallpaper in a living room?

Before you start wallpapering away, make sure you consider where a pattern or design will enhance the space and what sort of statement you want the room to make.

'Many living rooms tend to have an existing focal point, such as a fireplace or entertainment system and so it’s not always recommended to have a conflicting feature wall,' notes Melanie Adams, Global Manager, WallpaperDirect. 'Consider using living room wallpaper ideas on all four walls that complements the focal point for a more visually relaxing result.’

Whatever wall you choose to cover, be confident in your choice and remember, it can always be repapered or painted if you change your mind.

Living Room Wallpaper - 31 Living Room Wallpaper Ideas

One of the simplest ways to change up your living room is with wallpaper, whether you want a calming vibe using soft neutrals or a real hit of colour and pattern, and there are so many designs to choose from.

When it comes to living room wallpaper, murals are so popular right now and really express your personality – you can even design your own. Wallpaper can also be used to highlight a particular architectural feature such as a chimney breast or alcoves – and think about the fifth wall aka the ceiling, to really make an impact.

'When choosing wallpaper, consider the size of a room. Smaller scale patterns work well in big rooms, but can overwhelm smaller spaces,' explains David Harris, Design Director at Andrew Martin. 'Larger scale patterns work well in most rooms but think about lighting, as this can affect the look of wallpaper and make a colour appear lighter or darker.'

To make larger living rooms appear more intimate, opt for darker, more dramatic tones such as purple or navy, or for a compact lounge, lighter hues such as grey will create the illusion of space.

Importantly, think about the style of your home too, as this will affect your living room wallpaper design. 'Traditional patterns often suit period homes better, whilst kitsch patterns can add a sense of fun,' explains David Harris. 'Don’t be afraid to combine different patterns. Mix classic designs such as stripes or florals with exotic styles such as ikats and kilims. Avoid making the space look too busy by choosing patterns in colours that complement each other. '

So on that note, get some inspiration for the main room in your home with these living room wallpaper ideas.

Wallpaper for the hall (50 photos), which wallpaper to choose for the living room - Interior ideas

Wallpaper is a quick and relatively inexpensive way to update your living room interior. Thanks to a wide variety of shades, patterns and textures, they can be used to transform a room, visually expand it, as well as make it cozy and stylish. In order not to get lost among the huge assortment presented in hardware stores, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the types of wallpaper, find out the pros and cons of each material, read the recommendations and see photos of the best examples of living room design using them.

Types of wallpaper for the hall, their advantages and disadvantages

Paper wallpaper

This is the most affordable type of wallpaper. Due to their low cost, they can be used for finishing rented apartments, dormitories, or simply replaced every two to three years with new ones. Depending on the type of paper used, there are matte and glossy products.

Thin one-layer wallpapers are also called simplex, and two-layer wallpapers, consisting of a dense substrate and a decorative front side, are called duplex. The latter are more resistant to getting wet, so they do not tear during gluing and better hide the unevenness of the walls.

The advantages of paper wallpapers are low price, environmental friendliness (they pass air and microparticles of water vapor well), a large selection of patterns and colors. Among the shortcomings, it is worth noting fragility, susceptibility to mechanical damage, fading in the sun, and also the fact that, while collecting dust, they are not amenable to wet cleaning.

Walls must be perfectly level for wallpapering.

Vinyl wallpaper

Such wallpapers are made by applying artificial material - polyvinyl chloride - to a paper or fabric base. It can be smooth, hard, foamed or embossed (silkscreen). The resistance of PVC to moisture makes this material an optimal base for painting, and its low weight and mechanical strength make it easy to attach it to walls. The high price is justified by a long service life - from 10 to 20 years, and in addition - the ability to repaint (up to 5 times).

Vinyl wallcoverings are resistant to moisture, sufficiently elastic and durable, able to hide minor wall irregularities. Volumetric drawings and beautiful texture make them a very aesthetic type of finish. The disadvantages of vinyl wallpaper include the unpleasant smell of plastic (which should disappear over time) and the fact that they do not let air and steam through the walls, do not allow them to "breathe".

Textile wallpaper

The use of fabrics for wall decoration in the hall is not cheap, but their delightful appearance is worth it. Linen, satin, silk, velvet, with an amazing patterned weave - they make the interior truly luxurious.

Fabric wallpapers require very careful care - they should be covered from UV radiation and moisture, carefully cleaned. The environmental friendliness of such a finish depends on the material chosen, but in general, textiles pass air well.

Glass fiber

They are produced by weaving from the finest glass threads. The result is a very durable translucent canvas with a relief pattern. Such wallpapers are firmly fixed with starch paste on top of the plaster and can be re-painted.

The advantages of glass wallcoverings include environmental friendliness (they contain only natural materials such as quartz sand, limestone, soda, clay), fire safety (glass fiber melting point +600°C), durability (up to 30 years of operation).

The disadvantages are - a relatively large weight and poor choice of textures.

Liquid wallpaper

They can also be attributed to decorative plasters, because liquid wallpaper is, in fact, an acrylic solution with the addition of natural fibers (cellulose, sawdust, cotton, silk) and pigment.

This type of finish allows you to hide the original irregularities, create an interesting texture, paint the walls with a color gradient. Liquid wallpaper is easy to apply and remove, has a beautiful relief, evens out the surface of the walls. Glitter, small pebbles can be added to the composition of the mixture.

The disadvantages of finishing with liquid wallpaper include low moisture resistance.

It's all about style!

A huge number of varieties of wallpaper allows you to find the perfect solution for any style of interior. Read on for tips on some of them!

Contemporary living room wallpaper

Art Nouveau suggests a discreet design in monochrome colors. For a living room in this style, plain or wallpaper with a soft graphic pattern (diamonds, circles, lines, abstractions), imitation of polished marble, metal are suitable. An interesting addition that creates a visual perspective can be photo wallpapers.

Classic living room wallpaper

Light wallpapers with golden or silver floral ornaments, repeating the texture of expensive fabrics (satin, brocade, velvet), natural sandstone, mahogany, soft leather, will harmoniously look in the classic interior of the hall.

Wallpaper for the living room in Provence style

For a living room design in the Provence style, it is better to choose matte pastel wallpaper with a small floral print. You can not glue them with a solid canvas, but frame them with plain inserts that repeat the color of the patterns.

Nordic living room wallpaper

The main motif of the Scandinavian style - snow-covered rocks and transparent blue fjords - should be reflected in the decoration of the walls. Wallpaper can be white, light blue, gray, with abstract patterns.

Photo wallpapers depicting a winter mountain landscape or a waterfall will also help visually expand the living room.

Country living room wallpaper

This style is characterized primarily by natural materials. Imitation of masonry, wooden boards or logs, hay, straw are the basic options for country music.

Wallpaper with floral patterns, plaid, pets, birds, butterflies, pastoral scenes will help create a relaxed rustic atmosphere. Photo inserts should also remind you of life outside the city: a lot of sun, sky, green trees, endless fields and horses.

Colors

White wallpaper

White wallpaper in the hall is an elegant, unobtrusive backdrop for brighter decor and furniture. They are always appropriate, visually expand the space and give it a soft glow.

Gray wallpaper

A neutral palette ranging from silver to graphite, perfect for both monochromatic designs and toned down bright accents. Living room in gray will always look modern and sophisticated.

Wallpaper in pastel colors

Soft, sun-bleached, bleached colors create a very soothing atmosphere. Light blue, lilac, sand, beige, pink, greenish - they all blend perfectly with each other.

Living room with such wallpaper will visually appear more spacious.

Brown wallpaper

Shades of brown are ideal for a cozy home environment. The color of coffee and chocolate is in perfect harmony with the soft glow of yellow, the festive purity of white, the spring vivacity of green, and the heavenly elevation of turquoise.

Yellow wallpaper

In yellow tones, it makes sense to decorate the walls of the hall, the windows of which face the northwest side. Banana, lemon, orange wallpapers will fill the living room with warmth and light, and give the inhabitants a good mood.

Living room wallpaper combination

So that the living room does not get bored with monotony, it is worth using different elements for wall decoration. A successful combination of plain and patterned wallpapers will help to beautifully zone the space, increase the height of the ceilings, expand or narrow certain areas, highlight dark corners.

Using this technique, you should be guided by the shade combination table. The most harmonious look is a uniform base and patterns repeating in color on a lighter background. Glitter prints reflect light and grab attention; lines visually stretch the room; large elements fill the void of too large halls.

Wallpaper in the hall can also be combined with paint, decorative plaster, ceramic tiles, brick or stone masonry, wood veneer, cork and plastic panels. Carved wooden frames, stucco molding (or its imitation from polyurethane), plasterboard niches will help to highlight the most interesting areas.

Wallpaper for a small living room / hall in Khrushchev

The main task of designing a small living room in Khrushchev is to make the room seem more spacious. To do this, the wallpaper should be light, plain, with a small, neat pattern and vertical accents. You can add depth with the help of photo inserts and optical 3D effects.

If the wallpaper contains reflective elements (sequins, silk patterns, fluorescent coatings), it is necessary to provide good lighting - and they will give the room an extra shine.

It is better to refuse large images, three-dimensional relief and bright contrasts on the walls in a small room.

Nuances when choosing materials

The living room in the house is a common room and is designed for free time for all members of the cell of society. Therefore, interior design should be both practical and festive. When choosing wallpaper, be guided by the style of the interior, the furniture you plan to install, the color of its upholstery.

Planning ahead

In addition, the main points that require special attention are the following:

Living room size

This is the indicator that is taken into account first. There is an explanation for this: there are no strict restrictions for a spacious room, but finishing materials in dark colors are not suitable for a small room. Choose light and airy options for interior decoration, so the room will visually look more spacious. It is better to choose a canvas for the walls in the living room of a milky color, with shades of pink or gold. A drawing depicting large shapes is suitable for a large room, and with a small ornament - for a small one.

We take into account the dimensions of the room

Ceiling height

If it is high, it is better to paste over the walls in a horizontal strip. If the ceiling is low, prints with wide stripes in the vertical direction will do. They visually increase the height of the ceiling.

Illumination

If the room is warm and the windows face south, choose a canvas for walls with contrasting cold shades, such as gray, blue, green. If the living room is located on the north side, warm, soft colors are suitable: beige, golden, cream.

Clothes for walls: types

Wallpaper is a popular finishing building material that is used in the living room interior. All of them are conditionally divided into the following types:0005

Paper

This is a mediocre option for wall decoration, as the base is thin and deforms and breaks when glued. In addition, with their help it is impossible to hide the imperfections of the surface that is pasted over. But, if the walls are even, without cracks and roughness, and you really liked the pattern on the canvases, feel free to stick them, despite the short service life, because they are inexpensive.

Paper wallpaper - popular choice

Non-woven

They have a pronounced structure and high density, due to which they are more durable. They are not afraid of moisture and direct sunlight. Non-woven samples are produced for painting, so they can always be repainted in any color. The interior of the living room will be updated, especially if it is the novelty of the season.

Stylish and affordable non-woven wallpaper

Vinyl

Their base is paper and the surface is vinyl. Easy to clean when dirty. When gluing, the gaps in the joints are minimal, and it seems that the wall and the material covering them are a monolithic surface.

Fabric

Considered the most sophisticated. Their basis is paper and non-woven, and the surface of the front part is made of linen, velor, silk. Other fabrics may also be used. With such wallpaper, the interior is simply magnificent. But, there are drawbacks, for example, the price is impractical: pollution is difficult to remove, dust accumulates quickly.

Color range

If the floor in the room is dark and the furniture is decorated in saturated colors, light colors will do, which will add lightness to the interior. It is known that the height of the room is visually reduced if the floor has a dark color. Therefore, choose models with stripes and vertical ornaments.

Choosing models with stripes

When decorating living rooms with light-colored floors, there are no such restrictions. You can choose any wallpaper: light, dark, plain or with a pattern. But it is better to glue only on one side if they are dark.

The room will be brighter if the surface of the pasted materials is shiny. This wall covering is called silkscreen (satin). The reflection from them will be brighter if their surface has the effect of gilding, silvering. In a small living room, one shiny wall is enough, otherwise the room will look cramped.

Single wall silver effect

If it's hard to choose, buy a neutral color. They are universal, the interior can always be changed by changing textiles, accessories, lighting. With bright wallpaper on the walls it will be more difficult: you have to re-paste them.

Unusual wallpaper

Currently, the choice of wallpaper is huge. Among them are many species familiar to us. But there are some unusual ones. For example, if you want to decorate the interior of the living room in an eco-style, you can take bamboo or cork wallpaper for pasting the walls. They hide all the bumps on the walls well. But only one wall is pasted over with them, otherwise your room will look like a bamboo grove.

Cork wallpaper

The interior of the living room is considered fashionable if its walls are finished with stone or brick. But this does not mean that the walls are actually lined with these materials. For this, there are textured ones, which are almost impossible to distinguish from a real wall.

Lilac living room design

  • Lilac, fuchsia looks especially beautiful.
  • Blue and green: when combined, these colors look very sophisticated.
  • Vibrant shades. In this case, it is better to give preference to blue.
  • Gray never goes out of style. So, when using neutral shades, you can create a great background and focus on pieces of furniture. Gray color is elegant, restrained. It goes well with decorative wooden surfaces and bright contrasting interior items.

Prints and Designs

There are countless different prints and textures. Therefore, sometimes it is very difficult to choose the right pattern among hundreds of others. The following prints are popular:

Large drawing

Whether it be peas or flowers, palm trees or butterflies. Such a print will allow you to focus on the area of \u200b\u200bthe living room that, in your opinion, should attract the most attention. Interestingly, in many cases you don’t even need to decorate the living room with anything else, because beautiful and impeccably matched wallpaper with a large pattern perfectly copes with this purpose.

Just choose skirting boards, curtains and flooring in the right color. It is preferable to use plain interior items, as too much decorative workload will make the interior design too pompous and ridiculous.

Large pattern for maximum coverage

Oriental pattern

Many architects and designers have been captivated by the Asian flair. Therefore, you can find a large number of high-quality wallpapers with an oriental pattern. True, keep in mind: by choosing wallpaper on an Asian theme, you will oblige yourself to select special textiles and furniture in the same style so that the room looks harmonious.

Floral design

Wallpapers with natural prints are very popular these days. So, images can imitate bamboo, reeds and even the tropics. There are both bright and calm drawings in different shades. If you choose a bright print, such as a bright green top of a palm tree, then this wallpaper should be placed on only one wall, and the rest should be left more calm.

Thus, you will focus on a certain area of the living room and at the same time do not overload it with unnecessary decorations. By the way, floral print wallpapers are very easy to combine with other finishing materials, which should also be taken into account when choosing them.

Emphasis on a certain area

Flowers

Print with the image of flowers does not lose its popularity. You can still find wallpaper with a small provincial pattern with daisies. However, now fashion trends are undergoing changes: large flowers are popular, as well as rich contrasting shades. Interior design with variations of these patterns will allow you to create a visual focal point in the room.

Flowers for bright contrast

Geometric pattern

Also remains relevant. As with flowers, prints with a larger pattern should be chosen. In order to visually increase the free space, paste over the walls with wallpaper in light colors, which depict geometric prints. A vertical strip, for example, will visually increase the height of the room. However, do not choose solid colors that can make the room too boring.

Wall mural

Nowadays, photo wallpapers are becoming more and more relevant, on which anything can be depicted. You can order photo wallpapers with your own portrait or a picture from space orbit, but remember that in this case it is better to refuse impulsive decisions. Of course, it is important that the wallpaper has a beautiful and high-quality image. However, it is even more important that it fits organically into the design of the living room.

Combined wallpaper

Combining different types is one of the best options in a modern living room interior. This is the time to experiment. Use several options at the same time, just do not forget to place accents. Options with vertical and horizontal stripes, borders will help make the interior of the living room stylish.

Combining several types of wallpaper

Combining several types of wallpaper not only looks elegant, but also allows you to correct layout flaws. For example, your living room performs both sleeping and working functions at once. In order to divide the room into appropriate zones, you can paste over the walls of the workspace with brighter canvases. The combination will allow you to visually increase the size of the room, as well as fill the empty space, draw attention to the most significant area.

Filling in the empty space

In order for the wallpaper to produce the desired effect and not oversaturate the living room, no more than two walls are singled out, combining different textures. In a narrow living room, it is better to paste over short walls in bright colors. Longer walls, on the contrary, are in soothing shades. If desired, you can focus on the recreation area or active area. To do this, it is not necessary to purchase contrasting wallpapers, you can simply choose a coating with a different texture.

The main thing is not to overdo it with contrasts
