The most important thing for a cordless vacuum cleaner or any other vacuum cleaner is its ability to clean a wide variety of surfaces. For this reason, we subject all models to a rigorous set of tests.

We test every cleaner on carpet and hard floors to see how well they pick up dust (a mixture of carpet freshener powder, baking powder and talcum powder). We're starting low power testing, which will also deliver the longest battery life (and manufacturer-specified battery life). If a vacuum cleaner performs well at low power, this suggests that it is most likely suitable to replace a bulky corded vacuum cleaner. Increasing the power level shortens battery life and reduces cleaning time.

We put some dirt right next to the baseboard to see how close the vacuum cleaner can get to the edge, usually where dust collects in your home. We also test how well each vacuum cleaner can handle pet hair, as this is a common requirement for vacuum cleaners in most homes.

We look at ease of use and how well balanced each vacuum cleaner is; after all, these are the models you need to carry around with you. It's important to be able to reach different parts of your home, which is why we test how easy it is to lift the vacuum cleaner to clean high places and how easy it is to clean stairs.

We test battery life to find out how long each vacuum cleaner can run at different power settings. Finally, we check the quality and range of accessories and nozzles, and measure the noise level of each vacuum cleaner.

Vax ONEPWR Blade 4 Pet review on offer: it looks a lot like Dyson, cleans a lot like Dyson, and costs a lot less than Dyson. .. a longer guide to the best cordless vacuum cleaners. Where before we had the choice between Dyson, Dyson or Dyson, now it's time to go hands-free as hordes of wireless models with unpronounceable names arrive from overseas but mostly from mainland China.

This is good because it gives us more choice. That said, with prices often in excess of £400 for an average decent wireless model, you can be forgiven if you think anything below, say, £260 should be avoided like el plago. But you're wrong, because there are amazing cordless vacuum cleaners out there that don't cost a lot - like this pet model from Carpet Crackerjack, Vax.

This writer has been using the Vax ONEPWR Blade 4 Pet for a couple of months and for a high price of 259£.99 performed exceptionally well. By the way, if you don't have pets, the standard Blade 4 (without the optional motorized pet tool) is even cheaper at £219.99.

So what's so great about this cordless vacuum cleaner? Let me tell you.

Vax ONEPWR Blade 4 Pet review:

design While not quite up to Dyson's general standards, the Blade 4 Pet is durable and looks like it can take quite a few hits and scratches. While most cordless vacuum cleaners have the motor housing and dust boxes in a vertical position, the ONEPWR Blade 4 Pet’s is oriented horizontally. This will make it easier to remove the trash can by simply squeezing the two clips together. The downside is that it doesn't look as streamlined and feels a bit clunky in handheld mode.

At 3.1kg, this model is a bit heavier than some, but you only really notice it when cleaning above head height. Luckily, its weight isn't much of a concern when used on the floor, though the sharp angle of the handle means it's not as comfortable in the hand as, say, the comfort benchmark ROIDMI RS60.

At only 22 cm wide, the Blade 4 Pet antimicrobial brush is about 3 cm behind the Dyson V11 test, so it will probably take a few more back and forth strokes to cover the same surface area.

In terms of power, this model uses a brushless motor for long-term reliability and a rechargeable Vax ONEPWR lithium-ion battery that can be hot-swapped with other ONEPWR devices. It has two levels of suction as well as a means to include a motorized brush head for carpets or rugs.

It also comes with an LED headlight (or Dust Tracker) to light up darker corners of the home and a cheap but fun wall-mounted charging bay for those who can bother drilling holes in the wall.

Vax ONEPWR Blade 4 Pet review:

performance For a cordless vacuum cleaner that costs less than £260, this is an exceptional performer. While the lowest suction level is ideal for light cleaning of hard floors, it is useless for cleaning anything larger than small corn flakes. But switch it to a higher level and the suction increases five times, sucking up virtually all detritus - including rice, oats, corn flakes and shredded paper - from hard floors with unrivaled ease. You should reasonably expect around 45 minutes to run in this configuration.

For carpets and rugs, the high setting with motorized brush on is even more effective - you also get the benefit of a headlight in this mode. In our test of the mat in full mode (i.e. high power mode with motorized brush) vacuumed the mat in the same way as the Dyson V11, although the battery did drain in about 10 minutes. It may sound terrible, but the truth is that almost all modern cordless vacuum cleaners run out of power very quickly when used at full power - the Dyson V11 only manages about five minutes more, yet it costs almost three times as much as the Vax. Remember that in the real world, 10 minutes of vacuuming is usually enough to cover a couple of carpeted rooms and possibly more.

If something gets really hairy - like a dog bed, sofa or car seat - this model gives you an extra miniature motorized pet tool that really makes an impression, removing virtually all signs of a dog and cat life.

The 0.60 liter dust box is the average size for a cordless handle, and the three-stage filtration system does a great job of minimizing dust and musty carpet smell. But while the removable bin is a breeze to pull out and easy enough to empty, it's a little awkward to put back in again.

The Vax Blade 4 Pet's main drawback compared to the Dysons is that it's far less fun to use as a portable device. Yes, the crevice tool is very handy for cleaning in tight spaces, but the motor and dustbin unit feels a bit bulky and heavy in the hand.

Vax ONEPWR Blade 4 Pet review: Verdict

In high mode, the Vax ONEPWR Blade 4 Pet sucks and is also best in class. However, carpeting will drain the battery very quickly, and a narrower-than-average brush head will increase brushing time. But if you're looking for an extremely efficient cordless vacuum cleaner that costs a lot less than most of the competition, consider adding it to the list.
