Sometimes, browsing laundry room makeovers is the best way to get your remodel underway. After all, it's not easy to look at a busy, cluttered existing space and reimagine that 'before' as an 'after'.

So, we asked some of our favorite designers to provide remodeled laundry room before and afters so that we could show you what can be achieved using the right mix of laundry room ideas and advice.

Laundry room makeovers – before and after

Below, we showcase laundry room makeovers and utility room ideas that have become reality, with expert comment from the interior designers who created these stunning spaces. You’ll see old laundry rooms that are dated and cramped become light, airy and contemporary laundry room makeovers.

1. From dark and dingy to bold and eclectic

Before

The laundry room was dingy, and had the most under-used spatial arrangement you could think of,' says Kim Armstrong, principal designer and owner of Kim Armstrong Interior Design .  'The footprint of the original laundry room was terrible, and it had these furr-downs that closed the small space even more.'

After

'I was my own client on this project,' says Kim Armstrong, principal designer and owner of Kim Armstrong Interior Design.

'Every time I would walk into my small laundry room I would get frustrated because of the lack of laundry room organization and storage. Also, the room itself was so uninspiring and it didn’t make you feel good when you were using the space. So, when it came time to do this renovation I knew that I needed to come up with a floor plan that would better utilize the space and add a ton more storage. I also love color, and I love the pattern so I knew the final design had to incorporate both of those elements.'

'During the time, I was working on a couple of client projects and in my pile of fabric options, I had a sample of the Celerie Kemble Schumacher fabric, and I knew somehow I needed to use this in my laundry room.  I wanted to use this fabric in an impactful way, and that’s when I decided I would not only use it as my decorative roman shade, but I would make a sink skirt out of it as well. I wanted to keep the room playful, so I paired the cocoa Dalmatian dot wallpaper from Spoonflower with the fabric to give the room an element of fun.'

'I am very particular in how I do laundry, so incorporating the sink into this design plan was crucial to the usability of the space for me. I also rotated the washer and dryer so that it was away from the door to our powder bathroom, and in doing so it really opened up the traffic flow into the powder bathroom.'

2. A new build space is given life with pastel blue

Before

New builds have their upsides, but can be lacking in character which was the case with this space. Although the ceiling is low, there's a good sized window to the left which allows oodles of natural light.

After

'This laundry room makeover came together beautifully – we first picked out the geometric tile and loved the blue cabinetry and trim with it,' says Caroline Brackett, principal designer and owner at Caroline Brackett Studio of Design .  'It is a beautiful and functional laundry room. There is a lot going on and many design elements, but they work together very well. The wallpaper adds subtle pattern and interest to the space. It’s a lovely place to do laundry.'

3. From a dark kitchen to a light, airy and practical laundry room

Before

Originally a kitchen, the existing layout didn't allow space for a laundry room. The room was dark with wooden cabinetry and mid-toned wooden floorboards, so the overall feel was dated with little natural light.

After

'When designing this laundry/mudroom my goal was to marry an appealing style to functionality, as a laundry room with a multipurpose sink can truly change lives; now for this homeowner no cleaning task is too small, from bathing dogs to washing large size sports equipment,' says Alessia Zanchi Loffredo, owner and designer for the Chicago branch of reDesign home .

'The main scope of the renovation was a kitchen. In order to increase square footage for the kitchen and allow room for a walk-in-pantry I have flipped flopped the original kitchen layout including original mudroom and a portion of the garage. The new space planning allowed a large enough space connected to the garage to feature a mudroom and a laundry room that offers not only storage but also double washer and dryer and a custom oversized sink for multipurpose functionality,' continues Alessia.

4. A store room becomes a valuable laundry space

Before

Previously used as a store room, this space had the potential to become a really useful addition to the house. With a large window and not bad dimensions, it was a blank canvas.

After

'Laundry is chore-enough already, why not treat yourself to a functional yet stunning space to take on this mundane task,' says Heather K. Bernstein, owner and principal designer at HKB Interior Design . 'I wanted to treat this space as an extension of the kitchen or any other room with custom, thoughtful laundry room cabinet ideas. The fold away doors reveal the work horse machines behind, but when all closed up this is a beautiful space in and of its own. Cheers to never dreading doing laundry again.'

5. An dated laundry room is transformed into a modern space

Before

A tired laundry room that was in desperate need of modernizing, but it was a good size so had plenty of scope. The gray walls and ceiling made it feel closed in and the dated wooden cabinetry make the space feel dark and dingy.

After

'Small touches in a laundry room can make a big impact,' says Mel Bean, founder and principal designer at Mel Bean Interiors . 'The goal was to maximize the room so that it's both functional and visually appealing. We added color to the cabinetry, put up Clarence House Tibet wallpaper, gave it new flooring and put in a small island to elevate the space.'

6. Badly configured rooms remodelled to create a separate laundry room

After

The kitchen was original to the house, built in the 1940s, but very closed off. Amalia opened the wall between the kitchen and dining room, closed an exterior window and a door to the laundry room in order to give the homeowners more laundry room countertop space and laundry room closet ideas – all with a modest budget.

'The laundry room had too many openings (four doors and a window), so we actually closed the openings to create room for clever storage solutions, and added a colorful backsplash and wallpaper,' says Amalia Gal, founder and principal designer at Amalia Gal Interior Design .

How can I update my old laundry room?

There are so many beautiful ways to update an old laundry room.

If budget allows, considering updating your laundry room cabinet ideas. Cabinets are a natural part of a thoughtful laundry room design. They allow for all-important laundry room storage and good organization, while also closing the door on visible clutter, so are a great investment. If you need laundry room cabinetry but aren't planning a full renovation any time soon, a simple off-the-shelf kitchen wall cabinet is a more than adequate stand in. You can boost this with laundry room shelving ideas.

However, if you are after an instant update, look to the very best laundry room color ideas for inspiration. The advantage of painted cabinetry is the almost limitless choice of colors on offer, allowing you free rein to express yourself.

Color is important in all room schemes, and it’s only too easy to forget about color when it comes to laundry rooms, with the vast choice of timber and white schemes available.  Equally, a splash of color can be added by a backsplash in jewel-like colors, or concentrate on adding color with furniture such as stools or chairs.

How can I update my old laundry room?

If you can't rip out all the old fittings and start again the easiest, and least expensive, way to update an old laundry room is to repaint the walls and cabinetry. Look for painted kitchen cabinet ideas for inspiration and discover how to paint kitchen cabinets if you want to do this yourself. If you are painting a wall, ensure you choose paint finishes that can withstand increased levels of moisture, or consider paint finishes for a bathroom to ensure that, even with little ventilation, the room can stay looking good. Finally, look to replace the flooring and countertops. Again, investigating the best countertops for a kitchen will ensure that what you choose not only looks good but is durable.

Laundry in the hotel. Life according to the standard

Laundry in a hotel is a special world where the staff grows and decreases depending on the season, work is divided into urgent, daily and planned, and communication with the outside world is strictly subject to the standards of hotel service. At the same time, a strange thing, hospitality schools that have grown everywhere train maids, waiters, administrators, cooks, but not laundry operators. Nina Podelyakina, head of the laundry at the Swissôtel Resort Sochi 9, tells about her everyday life and work standards about how they get into hotel laundries0341 Camellia" in Sochi.

R: Nina, tell us how you got into the hotel business?

N: I will probably surprise you by saying that I am a director of small folk theaters by education. When the time came to decide on a profession, I wanted to work in a hotel, and additionally graduated from the service institute. In Yekaterinburg, where I lived, Hyatt opened in 2008 - a five-star hotel with 296 rooms. I started my work as a supervisor in the housekeeping service, translated into Russian - the head maid. nine0003

Soon I received an offer to head the laundry. Hyatt had a full-fledged laundry business. We processed all the linen and things of the guests ourselves. Mastering a new direction required serious efforts from me. Fortunately, I already knew chemistry and materials science at a decent level. But I had to study a lot on my own - I visited laundries, read everything I found. Hyatt, as an international chain hotel, had clear service standards. There were special instructions for everything related to the regulations for the acceptance and issuance of products, the quality of the service and the form of issuing things to guests. nine0003

R: Was previous experience on the new site helpful?

N: The work of the head maid helped a lot in planning the work of the laundry, as I knew from my own experience all the needs and specifics of the work of the housekeeping service: the peculiarities of storing and moving linen, preparing linen for rooms, which is important first of all, that in the second, and in what time intervals.

For example, when check-in is planned, the priority is the availability of direct linen, then guests can not ask for linen to be changed, but terry towels and bathrobes are being changed. There will be a departure, which means it is necessary to strengthen the washing and ironing section, while the number of orders for wet cleaning will be reduced. In the off-season, which we consider mid-autumn and mid-spring, there is a so-called deep cleaning - scheduled cleaning of mattress covers, bedspreads, pillows, curtains, etc.

As the head of the service, I trained the staff, distributed the scope of work. I prefer men in the washing area (it is more convenient for men to pull laundry) and women in the wet cleaning area (more delicate work, details are important, accuracy). At the same time, it was important for me that all my staff were interchangeable. I think that under my leadership at Hyatt, a very strong team has developed in the laundry. This is confirmed by the fact that even now, after my departure, 80% of the same composition of employees has been preserved in their laundry. nine0003

R: Why did you change jobs and move to Sochi?

N: I worked at Hyatt Ekaterinburg for six years. The year 2014 was approaching, and many of my acquaintances in the industry went to “make” the Olympics in Sochi. I also thought why not! My knowledge could be realized already at a new level. And I went from scratch to create a laundry service at the Bridge Resort hotel (Sochi) - a four-star hotel, huge, with 800 rooms.

It was an interesting project. Thanks to my knowledge and experience, I was actually given carte blanche to organize a laundry. I made the laundry for myself, I joined the project at the design stage. Unlike foreign chain hotels, where service standards are written in detail on paper, everything for Bridge Resort was created from scratch. I adapted the Hyatt standards for the new facility. Fewer stars does not mean a loss in quality, it is only a declaration of the range of services provided (number of linen changes, linen density, density and set of terry products, etc. ). Nobody canceled the high quality of washing. nine0003

I worked at the Bridge Resort for two years. During this time, we launched one laundry at full capacity and were preparing to launch the second one. I trained the staff myself, wrote manuals and instructions. After two years, all the work went like clockwork, and I was invited to the Swissôtel Resort Sochi Kamelia in Sochi. This is a 5 star hotel with 203 rooms and a large laundry room. The hotel completely closes its laundry needs during the season, it could even take third-party orders.

R: How is a hotel dry cleaning/laundry service different from commercial dry cleaners working with the public? nine0344

H: First of all, this is attention to the standards of receiving and issuing guests' belongings. As I said, everything is regulated. Things are picked up at a certain time. If you picked up before 9:00 in the morning, then before 18:00 you must return the completed order. Mandatory express service - cleaning in 2 hours. Things are issued on standard wooden hangers from the rooms. Forgotten things are returned in an envelope. Everything is written in the standards, right down to the results of ironing the arrows on the trousers, how many buttons to fasten on a shirt. In the dry cleaning-laundry at the hotel, a minor repair area is mandatory, and this is not an additional service, minor repairs are already included in the price. The operator must check the presence of all buttons, whether there are torn sections that need to be sewn up. Repair must be agreed with the client, he must know what is being done with his thing. nine0003

The hotel dry cleaning range also differs from the standard commercial dry cleaning range. For example, Yekaterinburg Hyatt is a business hotel. The main flow of customer orders is shirts. Swissôtel is positioned as a resort hotel for families, so we have a large flow of children's clothes, shorts, dresses, t-shirts. Typical contaminants we deal with are felt-tip pen, paints, juices, chocolate.

I prefer not to break technology. Before the washing stage, the laundry is necessarily sorted according to the degree of soiling. Heavily soiled laundry is washed separately, sometimes soaked in detergent solutions to better remove stains. There is no miracle if these simple actions are neglected, the laundry will either not be washed and will be sent for reprocessing, or the total consumption of detergents and the wear of the laundry will increase. nine0003

R. What kind of equipment and detergents do you prefer to work with?

N: Many manufacturers have successful models and technologies, so no one should be discounted. I prefer to take the best from everyone. Since the days of Hyatt, I have worked a lot on Electrolux equipment. Hyatt was one of the first in Russia to install a complete Lagoon wet cleaning kit. We processed urgent orders, delicate items, silk dresses, shirts on it. The set of wet cleaning programs hardwired into its memory is impressive. This is one of the first modifications in which the programs were very narrowly specialized. At Swissôtel, we also have Electrolux washing machines with a wet cleaning function. New generation programs have become more universal. The equipment park is regularly updated. nine0003

Electrolux experts helped us a lot with staff training. They sent their instructors, held seminars. The first wet cleaning instructor was Jean Perret, a Frenchman from the European office of Electrolux. And in the future, our communications with the manufacturer were built very productively. We could always ask for advice and get a detailed answer.

I am always open to testing new detergents. Of course, we have time-tested drugs that we are used to, but everything that we like is new, we take it into use. nine0003

R: How do you train staff?

N: Swissôtel has a core team of three people, with the rest being hired as capacity becomes available through the outsourced hotel service. Such an organization of work suggests that it is we, the main team, who perform the difficult work, in which you need to turn on your head. The new staff is trained with us and takes over their work area. I myself write trainings, teach by example, tell. This is a routine job that I need to do every season with the arrival of new people. I teach everything that I know and can do. During the season, the number of employees reaches 12 people. We enjoy attending seminars. I myself like to learn and try new things, learn about new technologies and implement them in my production. Of course, I write a technical justification to the management, but in principle they trust my opinion. nine0003

Laundry does not provide many career opportunities for ambitious employees, development is possible when implementing new projects, more difficult, interesting, large-scale tasks. And it depends on the person whether he will seek stability from work or create something new. Therefore, if you want to develop yourself and introduce new technologies, this is only your task.

R: How does the laundry interact with the maid service when buying linen for the hotel?

H: Laundry staff are well aware that we live and work with new linen for its entire life. Mistakes when buying batches of laundry will be a heavy burden on the laundry staff. At the same time, the management does not care about problems, it needs snow-white linen in the rooms. The quality of our work affects the reviews about the rest of the hotel. That is why we approach the choice of linen with special care.

Everywhere I worked, linen was purchased through testing at the laundry. In international chains, this is a generally accepted standard, and it is followed. At Bridge Resort, I introduced this practice myself. The laundry checks the laundry for density, appearance of the laundry after several washes, whiteness, whether it can or cannot be processed at high temperatures, whether dirt is easily removed from it, how ironing affects it (is it worth it), etc. All our comments are sent to the supplier who offers the solution. nine0003

R: What problems are currently being solved by laundry facilities in Sochi hotels?

H: Can't say we have any problems in the laundry. Everything is handled in working order. But colleagues turn for help regularly. For example, I was recently contacted by Azimuth for advice on laundry at a hotel that was under management. Due to very old equipment, the introduction of new technologies is limited, questions from the last century are on the agenda - how to remove rust, remove old pollution. nine0003

Laundry issues are highly dependent on management policy. If it understands the importance of the laundry to the hotel, then the site will be maintained, funded for refurbishment, training and development.

There are still plenty of such old laundries in the city of Sochi, and even those where they simply wash with soda and chlorine. New laundries, in their turn, cannot always consistently produce quality, meet deadlines, and have a minimum overwash percentage. I think that giving linen to a guest with unfinished work is to undermine your reputation, but many people think it will do. nine0003

In my opinion, hotels in Sochi, where there are more than 50 rooms and space allows, it is better to have their own laundry production, as commercial laundries still cannot keep the service at a sufficient level, especially in summer. By managing your laundry, you yourself control the quality, timely readiness of linen, costs. From our own experience, we realized that we ourselves work better.

Vladimir Agibalov, Electrolux specialist, comments:

For hotels, we offer two configuration options:

Basic kit - washing machine and dryer, in a special configuration, installed in a column. We offer it when the planned number of products entering processing does not exceed 70 products per shift.

This kit is purchased by hotels that already have laundry facilities, but wish to introduce a wet cleaning service for customers at the production site.
