Thanks in very large part to farmhouse style whisperer Joanna Gaines, the Fixer Upper aesthetic is no mere fad. In fact, "farmhouse style" has become synonymous with "classic." Rustic touches like well-worn antiques, reclaimed and repurposed treasures, and crisp white shiplap walls are showing up in homes all over the United States—including those that are nowhere near the country range. And while you can easily pull off farmhouse style in any room of the house, farmhouse kitchens—with their ruff-hewn open concept shelving, vibrant painted cabinetry, apron or skirt-fronted sinks, and collections galore—are by far the most coveted type of this interior style. So how do you get one of your own? Do you have to move to a wide-open space and make a farm-sized investment to pull off that charming kitchen of your own? Absolutely not. The beauty of the farmhouse aesthetic is that it's simple—you can start small with a few gallons of eye-catching paint and a well-loved vintage table and eventually work your way up to shiplapped backsplashes and exposed wood beams. Even better: It works well whether you live in a big-city condo, suburban track home, or small-town cabin—maybe too well. Explore our list of 34 farmhouse kitchen ideas to create the perfect kitchen that's filled with flair, function, and rustic vibes. Good luck getting party guests to hang out anywhere else after pulling together such a warm and welcoming space!

Pecky Cypress

Fans of reclaimed wood, here's a new kitchen trend you'll want to keep your eyes on: pecky cypress, seen here on the island and hood. This grainy type of wood is known for its long pocketing and striations. Orb lights also help soften a kitchen with lots of straight lines and sharp edges.

Exposed Shelving

Rustic wood looks even more lovely against crisp white walls and dishes. The owner of this northern California home used Douglas fir for the shelving and redwood for the farm table. Exposed shelving and hanging pots are classic features of a country kitchen.

Vintage Sink

This couple embraced the history of their 18th-century farmhouse by filling it with antiques, and in the kitchen, that translates to a vintage porcelain double farm sink and a display of gorgeous antique dishes. Other small touches, like the faded checkered rug and storage baskets under the sink, add to the rustic style.

Old Country Charm

A much-needed renovation replaced wallpaper and dark cabinets with an open, welcoming space that utilizes a mix of materials, from aged zinc on the countertops and hood to reclaimed wood on the island and walls. The owner of this 100-year-old Texas farmhouse has modern appliances hidden away inside the island, and the antique filing cabinet by the stove adds even more country charm.

Kitchen in a country house: 15 examples with photos

In the fresh air, the appetite wakes up more often! We have prepared for you a selection with the interiors of country kitchens that will inspire you to cook and, perhaps, to update your own home.

Since ancient times, in a Russian hut, the kitchen, unlike the corner with a table, was hidden behind a curtain or taken out to a separate small annex. Time flies, kitchen furniture and appliances are developing, and it makes no sense to hide such a space. However, in order to make the kitchen of your dreams in a country house, some details need to be considered in advance. About everything in order. nine0003

Kitchen by the window

A kitchen with a window will turn even routine cooking and washing dishes into meditation, however, you need to think about such a placement of the kitchen even at the stage of building a house: this will allow you to choose a view from the window not on the fence of the neighboring plot, but on an attractive landscape . So the kitchen windows in the house of the customer Gulya Galeeva overlook evergreen coniferous trees. To be more precise, this space is considered a breakfast area (there is a separate room for the kitchen with all the necessary professional equipment), and it is not difficult to imagine how pleasant it is to start your day here. nine0003

Such placement of the kitchen can predetermine the type of kitchen set. This happened in the project of Igor Kurkin: he intentionally did not make cabinets with glass facades in the kitchen (although initially the customers wanted this), so that nothing would distract from the view outside the window. Moreover, the designer painted the entire kitchen in the color of the walls, due to which the antique dark sideboard and dining group become an expressive element of the space.

Consider how often and how much you cook. Perhaps sometimes it is still worth paying tribute to traditions and isolating the kitchen. But the owners of this country house did not choose - they, despite the small size of the building, placed two kitchens here at once: one kitchen with a window is combined with a dining room (to keep the space light, neat shelves were used instead of wall cabinets), and the second is hidden in a room along neighborhood. If guests have gathered in the house, then in this room you can cook and not interfere with those gathered in the common area. And after changing dishes, you can remove dirty dishes there, where they will not remind you of themselves and spoil the relaxed atmosphere of the feast. Another nod to antiquity was the cast-iron stove, which is not only used for its intended purpose, but also divides the entire space into a living room and kitchen. And, of course, it is also better to think about such an attribute at the stage of designing a house. nine0003

House designed by MK-Interio in the suburbs of St. Petersburg. Dining and kitchen area. The stove was installed by the builder. Dining chairs, Thonet; lamp, Penta; tablecloth and decorative items on the shelves - from the store "Items"; slate on the floor.

Kitchen with island

Around the island in the kitchen (both outside the city and in a city apartment) all life can spin. He is able to simultaneously unite the entire space and divide it into zones. At the same time, despite the size, the island may seem almost invisible. For example, a country house designed by the A61 architectural bureau and the YY design bureau is minimalistic both inside and out, simple textures and shapes are designed not to distract from nature. The island also corresponds to the idea: the severity of its lines is emphasized by a stone countertop and immediately smoothed out by a wooden finish. The extractor hood gives it out (consider this if you are going to place a hob on the island). nine0003

But decorator Katya Gulyuk decided to focus on the kitchen in her country house. Decorated with tiles (which is not only beautiful, but also practical), it contrasts with the woodwork of the house and sets the mood. And in this case, of course, the island becomes the main element of space.

The kitchen in the client Natalya Yunina's country house is another example of how an island doesn't have to be a boring hulk. The whole interior was conceived during the autumn period, which coincided not only with the calendar, but also with the mood of the owner of the house, so materials and textures were chosen in accordance with two criteria - the ability to age beautifully and “tactility”. The kitchen is no exception: noble wooden facades are complemented by an island with two levels of countertops, which from the side of the dining area looks more like a piano or the stern of a ship. nine0003

House on the edge of the forest, 490 m². The kitchen is made according to the sketches of the designer in the workshop of Dmitry Olenichev. Island and bar stools, Marchetti Mobilificio d'Arte SpA; pendant lights and switches, Aldo Bernardi; faceted bowl, Ceramum.

Classic fronts

If you want to feel like the owner of an estate or at least a family nest in a country house, then a kitchen with classic fronts is just for you. A wooden set will create an atmosphere of a space that has long been inhabited, in which its own history was probably created. Both Marina Gaskova’s client, who dreamed of recreating the atmosphere of his childhood home, and Alexey Dunaev’s customer, aspired to this, and she immediately said that she wanted “a comfortable modern building that looks like it has been standing here for a long time. ” nine0003

And decorator Natela Mankaeva in the project of a house near Moscow in the style of a French chateau in the interior of the kitchen did not limit herself to furniture with panels. The relief of the facades is highlighted with fine golden painting, and the sofa, which also becomes a prominent detail of the kitchen, is a wooden reproduction of stone benches at the Novokuznetskaya metro station.

But if there is already a lot of wood in the house, then you can paint the facades in a calm neutral tone. Gray is often preferred: the designers of the A3 studio complemented such a kitchen with a wood-like countertop and an antique sideboard, and Elena Semenova brought warmth with the help of brass details.

Steel facades

Conversely, those who want to add a modern spirit or even futuristic motifs to a wooden country house should take note of the kitchen with steel-effect facades. Metal is good because it takes on the shades of objects and reflects light and space around. But it is worth remembering that, despite their brutal appearance, they, just like on any other surfaces, can have offensive scratches, so be sure to make sure that the facades are vandal-resistant before ordering. nine0003

A house in the Moscow region designed by Olga Maleva. Kitchen. Kitchen set, Awelt, with steel facades; lamps, Barbara Barry; cutting board and stool, Zara Home; ceramic vases Baena, Moon-stores.

Minimalist kitchens

And if you don't want to pay too much attention to the kitchen, you can disguise it. Designer Anna Hom, although she painted the facades in a contrasting black color throughout the space, the kitchen does not catch the eye, on the contrary, it acts as a backdrop for the flowing island that is in front of it. And in the project by Snegiri Architects, the kitchen merges with wall panels and doors, so you can only notice it if you look closely. nine0003
