The white house california

Inside A $25 Million California ‘White House’ – Robb Report

It would have made a perfect setting for the TV drama The West Wing, with Martin Sheen as President Jed Bartlet pacing the hallowed hallways. But this White House in the sleepy central California enclave of Hillsborough is actually a 2,800-mile drive from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and 372 miles from the NBC sound stages in Burbank where the much-loved political drama was filmed.

Dating back to 1878, the imposing neo-classical Georgian Colonial, with its towering pillars, grand entry and manicured grounds, was once owned by George Hearst, eldest son of media tycoon William Randolph Hearst. In 1930, the younger Hearst turned to the renowned Bay Area architect Julia Morgan to completely redesign the home after it had been badly damaged by fire.

Morgan, who was the first woman architect licensed in California, and the first female to be admitted to the famous l’École des Beaux-Arts architecture program in Paris, had gained notoriety for having designed the fabled Hearst Castle in San Simeon, California.

According to legend, George Hearst had dreams of welcoming US presidents to his new home, so he commissioned Morgan to create a mini replica of the White House. Sadly, no POTUS ever came—and Hearst sold the estate without ever spending a night there himself.

Since then, the home has had a multitude of high-profile owners. John Lennon and Yoko Ono reportedly came close to buying the estate in the early 1970s, only to back out at the last minute. “The home still ranks among the area’s finest legacy estates, and for it to have been designed by Julia Morgan adds so much to its stature,” listing broker Jennifer Gilson, of Golden Gate Sotheby’s International Realty, tells Robb Report.

Today, the home is owned by Shailesh Mehta, former Chairman and CEO of leading credit card issuer Providian Financial (which was sold in 2005 to Washington Mutual for a reported $6.5 billion). Records show he bought it in 1997 for $6.05 million and, according to Gilson, went on to invest millions on exterior renovations. He has now listed it for $25 million.

Unassuming security gates off Hillsborough’s tony El Cerrito Avenue open on to a long, snaking, paved driveway that leads to the home’s expansive motor court and towering, pillared entryway. “It’s such an imposing, stately facade that makes everyone who comes here feel like they’ve arrived at the actual White House,” says Sotheby’s Gilson.

It’s an impression that continues once you step inside and see the magnificent wood-paneled library-slash-“Oval Office” off to one side. With its impressive fireplace with black marble and carved wood surround, its custom bookcases and an imposing desk at one end, it’s a room fit for any president.

The entire main house sprawls over 22,300 square feet, of which the ground floor’s 6,600 square feet is set aside just for entertaining. “Typically homes of this age would have much more compartmentalized spaces, but Julia Morgan created a more open-plan look, with over-sized rooms like the impressive, full-width living room,” says Gilson. That also applies to the huge eat-in chef’s kitchen and vast family room, where French doors lead out to a large patio and the pool. On this level, there’s also a sumptuous Hollywood-style tiered movie theater, a wine room and gym.

Take the sweeping staircase, or elevator, up to the second floor to find 11 bedrooms and 10 full baths. The grand primary suite sits in the central semi-circular rear section of the home and has views of the pool. Restoring the Olympic-size pool and adjoining pool house were part of Mehta’s extensive renovations, as were the elegant grounds with that rose garden and stand of cherry blossom trees. In all, the grounds cover just under three acres.

Of course, if this “Western White House” doesn’t check all the right boxes, it may be worth a trip down the coast to San Clemente. Here, overlooking the crashing Pacific, is the real Western White House, the former home of President Richard Nixon that was listed, until recently, for $65 million.

La casa pacifica – a landmark on the coast - president richard m. Nixon’s western white house

La casa pacifica – a landmark on the coast – president richard m. Nixon’s western white house.
This oceanfront spanish colonial home is located at: 4100 calle isabella, san clemente, california and it features 9 bedrooms, 14 baths, 15,000 square feet of living space on a 5.45 acres land
The 5.5-acre california estate has a spanish colonial home and 450 feet of oceanfront
The spectacular oceanfront estate in san clemente, that was known as the western white house during president richard nixon’s administration is back on the market for $63.5 million.

La casa pacifica, originally known as the cotton estate, holds a prominent place in california history. Hamilton h. Cotton reserved san clemente’s finest oceanfront parcel for his own estate. His vision was to model his home after an andalusian-themed manor he had seen in san sebastian, spain. The cottons constructed their stately single-story residence on a gentle knoll, known as cotton’s point.

A two-story tower, white stucco walls, wrought-iron flourishes, and hand-painted tiles played an important role in defining the historic home’s overall character. In addition, acres of impeccably landscaped grounds complemented the seaside residence. Monterey cypress trees were brought in and planted in strategic locations across the oceanfront bluff in order to diffuse the late-day sun, add shade, and lend an imposing presence to the magnificent grounds that surrounded the landmark residence.

Map:

The cotton estate gained national prominence when, in 1927, it was featured in architectural digest. In 1970, the home would again appear in the magazine, this time featured as the cover photo and described as “the western white house,” highlighting the importance of its second owner, then-president richard m. Nixon.

La casa pacifica rests on one of southern california’s largest and most scenic sections of coastal residential real estate. It comprises two parcels totaling 5.45 acres, and the site features 450 lineal feet of beachfront. The entire compound sits behind private walls and fences. The property is mostly flat with a garden that gently slopes seaward. The natural elevation is ideally suited to maintain privacy and enhance the sweeping ocean, island, and sunset views. The beach is easily accessible from la casa pacifica’s private gate.

The primary design language is a romantic interpretation of spanish colonial revival architecture. The gleaming white structures provide a perfect canvas for the vibrant colors and textures of the gardens, paving and tile work. The period craftsmanship of la casa pacifica is superb—there are one-of-a-kind, hand-painted ceramic murals and tiles throughout the property, as well as original installations comprising patterned ceramic tiles characteristic of early california, spanish, and moorish designs.

Video:

Nixon purchased the home six months into his presidency in 1969 for $1.4 million. During his five turbulent years in office, la casa pacifica, as it’s known, hosted no fewer than 17 heads of state, including soviet leader leonid brezhnev and japanese premier eisaku satō, along with countless celebrities from john wayne to frank sinatra.

When nixon resigned in 1974, it was to la casa pacifica that he retreated, penning his memoirs in an office overlooking the ocean. (nixon wasn’t the only president who favored an oceanfront address; ronald reagan owned a property in the pacific palisades.) in 1980, nixon sold the home to his longtime political ally gavin s. Herbert, founder of the allergan pharmaceuticals giant.

Interestingly, the infamous 1977 frost/nixon interviews had originally been scheduled to take place in la casa pacifica, but radio signals from nearby coast guard navigational transmitters interfered with the production crew’s tv equipment. They were relocated to the home of a nixon supporter close by. The residence did, however, feature in director ron howard’s frost/nixon movie.

Built in 1927 in the spanish mission revival style for oil tycoon hamilton h. Cotton, the estate also has a 3,000-square-foot entertaining pavilion with a guest wing, a detached two-bedroom guest house, and multiple staff buildings where the secret service used to camp out. Other features of this high-walled compound include an oceanfront swimming pool, a lighted tennis court, a putting green, a greenhouse, and formal gardens.

La casa pacifica was first listed in april 2015 with an asking price of $75 million and was subsequently lowered to $69 million the following year. After being withdrawn from the market, it is now being offered for $63.5 million.

WASHINGTON, March 11 - RIA Novosti. The White House is helping resolve the bankrupt Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), California Gov. Gavin Newsom said. "For the past 48 hours, I've been in touch with White House and Treasury officials," Newsom said in a statement released by the governor's office. He stressed that officials are working "to stabilize the situation as soon as possible, protect jobs, savings and the entire investment ecosystem." California regulators have closed Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), the largest bank to fail in the US since the last financial crisis, according to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The FDIC transferred all insured deposits from the SVB to a separate entity it created, the Deposit Insurance National Bank of Santa Clara. US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen met with regulators on Friday and expressed confidence in their ability to handle the SVB situation.

The US Government will assist in the investigation of the Monterey Park shooting that killed ten people. This is stated in a written statement by the President of the United States, Joe Biden, distributed by the White House, reports TASS .

“This morning (Sunday — Gazeta.Ru) I instructed my Homeland Security Adviser to provide comprehensive federal support to local and state authorities who continue to take action and investigate this murder. While we wait for more information from law enforcement, I want to reassure the residents of Monterey Park and the surrounding area that we will support you in every way we can,” the message said.

He stressed that the authorities "do not yet know the motive for this senseless attack. "

Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna previously stated that police are looking for middle-aged Asian men in a California shooting case.

Prior to this, Biden expressed condolences in connection with the mass shooting in the city of Monterey Park.

On January 23, ABC News reported that intelligence agencies found the body of a man inside a truck where, according to police, there was a suspect in a mass shooting in Monterey Park, California.

The shooting occurred during the Chinese New Year celebration. Information about it began to arrive after 22:00 local time on January 21 (09:00 Moscow time on Sunday).
