Garden drawing competition
Garden BirdWatch Drawing Competition | BTO
Love birds? Love drawing? This summer project gives families a great reason to watch garden birds together, and the chance to win a pair of compact binoculars for the best garden bird drawing! Garden BirdWatch is a scientific project that monitors birds in gardens, but it’s also a fun activity for families to do together. The project involves watching, counting, drawing and writing, and is open to children aged 5-11.
First prize: Opticron Savanna 8x23 compact binoculars (RRP £89)Watching, counting, drawing and writing for families with children aged 5-11
The bird survey
1. Make a list of your garden birds each week
You can choose a set time to watch your birds, or do it any time, but try to spend the same amount of time each week. You can also count the maximum number of each species you see together. See below for instructions, a log sheet, and a bird ID guide.
Parents: you can talk about what birds you expect to see. Why do you think you see more of some kinds of birds? What foods do they like to eat?
2. Register for GBW and input your sightings on our website
Parents: you'll need to register for a GBW account on our website. These records will go into the important Garden BirdWatch national database, so you’ll be helping with scientific research!
GBW is an ongoing project, so if you like it you can continue helping with our research by carrying on after the end of the summer.
Runner-up prizes: Gardman Paint Your Own feedersThe drawing competition
1. At the end of August, draw a picture of one of your garden birds
Look at your counts and choose the bird you saw most often, or the bird with the highest counts (but it's ok if you just pick your favourite!)
You could also make your counts part of the picture, or draw your and your family birdwatching.
If you love writing, write a sentence alongside your picture telling us what you saw and why you enjoyed it.
2. Share your picture with us by Sunday 6 September 2020
Parents, send the picture to us on Twitter with the hashtag #SummerGardenBirdWatch, or email gbw [at] bto.org with the subject Summer Garden BirdWatch Competition. Please include the child's first name and age, the full name of the Garden BirdWatch account holder, and permission to publish the drawing and child's name and age. You can, optionally, also include photos of your family birdwatching together.
Our favourite drawing will be published on our website and will win a pair of Opticron Savanna compact binoculars (RRP £89). Ten runners-up will receive a Gardman Paint Your Own Feeder, a wooden feeder you can decorate with non-toxic paint and hang in the garden.

Young Botanical Artist Competition 2022: Call for Entries
30/6/2022
There's a NEW Botanical Artist Competition for Young Botanical Artists - and this is about the Call for Entries. The Young Botanical Artist Competition 2022 is being sponsored by Dr Shirley Sherwood in collaboration with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
We believe there is significant talent among the 16-25 age group with a wealth of exciting work to be uncovered. This is a crucial moment to engage with the ever-growing genre of botanical art – the scientific capacity of botanical paintings and drawings to document plants and fungi is particularly vital in contemporary society as we work to preserve our planet’s biodiversity.
[ UPDATE: The Deadline for Entries has been extended to 30 April 2023 - see my UPDATE post UPDATE: Young Botanical Artist Competition - deadline extended ]
Summary of who/what/how to enter
Below is a summary of the "need to know" facts about the competition for those interested in entering. This covers:
- Details of who can enter and what they can enter
- Selection and judging
- Prizes
PLUS Resources on this website
There are a few very relevant matters which are missing at the moment (eg entry form) - but I'm sure this will be fixed quickly.
Who can enter?
The competition is open to budding botanical artists aged 16-25.
There's no definition as to the date for defining that age but, in competitions of this sort, it's conventional for the deadline for entries to be the date limiting age.
What can you enter?
You can enter artwork which is
- two dimensional only (eg drawing, painting, print)
- with a fixed size of either A4, A3 or A2 (Here's a handy tool for identifying these A sizes in terms of metric measurements)
- representative and in a botanical art style
- about trees, leaves and anything that exists in between.
Can I enter a piece that is off-theme?
No. Whatever your artwork is, it must have some connection with trees.
It could depict something as large as the entire tree or as small as a leaf bud. You could also choose the fruit, a decaying leaf, a branch, the moss-coated trunk or any other element that inspires you, provided it relates to trees.
If the judges don't see any relation to the theme of the competition, your piece will not be considered.
Also, make sure to do some background research on your chosen tree- it may not be classified as one!
Young Botanical Artists FAQs
Media
There is no criteria or limits re. media - except that photography is not allowed.
Can I use digital media?
Yes. You can use any form of artistic media, with the exception of photography. All that we ask is that it's in a representational botanical art style.
Young Botanical Artists FAQs
Deadline for entries
[UPDATE] You need to submit entries by 30 April 2023 at the latest.
(PREVIOUSLY the deadline was 30 November 2022).
The convention with art competitions is that means up until midnight on the date identified unless another time is specified.
Digital entries (file details)
It's very clear the competition expects entries to be digital - but it currently says nothing about the format and size of the digital image e.g. resolution, pixel size and file size.
Entry Form
The Notice of the Competition includes a large ENTER NOW button - but I'm having trouble locating:
- Terms and Conditions
- Privacy Policy / Data Protection statement
I'll update this blog post when this has been fixed.
How will the artwork be selected?
There are two usual elements to selection:
- who does the judging
- the criteria they use for making a selection.
In this instance there is also a third - two age based categories for the final selections.
Age-based selection
Selection of artwork from digital image submissions by 10 artists will be created for each of two age groups:
- 16-18 and
- 19-25)
So that's 20 artists in total who will be shortlisted.
UPDATE: Artists who turned 26 between November 30th 2022 (our original competition deadline) and April 30th 2023 are still eligible to apply.
Who are the Judges?
Artwork submitted to this competition will be judged by a panel of esteemed judges including:
- revered contemporary botanical artists
- Kew’s gallery curators and program leaders.
Winning entries will be announced on 30th June 2023.
What is the criteria for selection?
The judges will be looking for botanical artworks that represent their subject creatively, but with scientific accuracy.

The Prize
Prize Money
Winners will receive prize money as follows:
- Overall Winner (1 per category): £750
- Highly Commended (2 per category): £250
A People’s Choice Artist will also be chosen during the course of exhibition by visitors.
These artists will also receive an art supplies bundle worth £100, supported by Seawhite of Brighton.
Will I make profit from sales if my work is printed on to merchandise?
No. All profits from merchandise produced by Kew in collaboration with the YBA competition, and using artworks submitted to that competition, will go to the Kew Gardens charity. We will contact all winners whose work will be produced in merchandise to gain authorisation prior to any production. Should anyone wish to buy the shortlisted artworks displayed in the Shirley Sherwood Gallery, the proceeds will of course go entirely to the artist.

Young Botanical Artist 2022 Exhibition
There is to be an Exhibition of all the 20 selected artworks - from OCTOBER 2023 onwards - at the Shirley Sherwood Gallery. (Changed from April 2023)
I assume this will be in Gallery 6 which is where the botanical art exhibitions from Shirley Sherwood's collection are normally held.
Shortlisted artists will also receive a complementary family day pass to Kew Gardens and the gallery space for the purpose of seeing the exhibition
Some of the winning artworks will be reproduced in merchandise available for sale at The Shirley Sherwood Gallery shop and in online retail outlets. (Typically this takes the forms of cards and prints and sometimes other items)
I can't see anything as to licensing arrangements. However while the former must be covered, it's unlikely that there will be any financial reward for the artists whose artwork is chosen for reproduction.
