A beautiful backyard pool can be as calming for your mind as it is refreshing for your body. Even the view of tranquil water, whether from inside your home or from your garden, patio, or porch, can soothe the soul.

From minimalist modern swimming pool designs to more formal, elaborate styles, the key to creating a sophisticated swimming pool is to complement the landscape rather than compete with it. This is true of almost any backyard design idea, from pergolas and gazebos to garden sheds. One of the best ways to nestle a pool into the landscape is to carefully choose plant materials surrounding it. Planning a pool in full sun? Consider surrounding with drought-tolerant plants and cool decking materials. For a cooler watering hole, lush up the landscape with plants that thrive in the shade.

Next, you'll want to think through how to furnish your pool deck. It's important to choose outdoor furniture that's comfortable, durable, and suitable to the style of your pool design. Of course, no pool would be complete without plush beach towels. And for a whimsical touch, embellish your pool with a charming outdoor fountain or a stylish garden ornament.

If you’re making plans for summer or simply dreaming of it on a dreary winter day, dive into these serene swimming pool designs for a luxurious escape.

22 In-Ground Pool Designs - Best Swimming Pool Design Ideas for Your Backyard

Mint Images

There’s no better way to beat the heat than a dip in a refreshing swimming pool. It’s even better when that swimming pool is in your own backyard. Today’s in-ground pools go way beyond the turquoise-lined rectangular shapes that quickly began to populate backyards following WWII. With built-in waterfalls, surrounding gardens, and organic shapes, your pool can be a beautiful element to add to your backyard landscape ideas. Plus, whether your home is a traditional Tudor, a rustic farmhouse, or even a glass-wrapped modern ranch, today’s options in patio and building materials allow your pool to easily complement the architecture and style of your house. Many pool and landscape plans also incorporate different gathering areas with unique dining and seating spots, lush patio plants, and interesting lighting, helping to establish your pool as the center point of all outdoor activity—both for daytime family fun and moodier nighttime gatherings.

While many of these pool designs require a lot of space, a large yard is no longer a make-or-break requirement for a backyard pool. Thanks to flexibility in shape and size, there are many swimming pool designs and plans that are just right for small yards. And, sure, a backyard swimming pool is an investment, but don’t count it out just for fear of cost. There are lots of swimming pool design ideas for all styles and budgets. (Tip: If you’re still not quite ready to commit to an in-ground pool, you can still get in on the backyard game with a low-commitment stock-tank pool.) Once your new, beautiful pool is installed and the water is flowing, you’ll be anxious to invite over your family and friends for a summer full of festive pools parties. Don’t forget the pool floats!

Exterior Design & Landscaping Worlds

We were contacted by a family named Pesek who lived near Memorial Drive on the West side of Houston. They lived in a stately home built in the late 1950's. Many years back, they had contracted a local pool company to install an old lagoon-style pool, which they had since grown tired of. When they initially called us, they wanted to know if we could build them an outdoor room at the far end of the swimming pool. We scheduled a free consultation at a time convenient to them, and we drove out to their residence to take a look at the property. After a quick survey of the back yard, rear of the home, and the swimming pool, we determined that building an outdoor room as an addition to their existing landscaping design would not bring them the results they expected. The pool was visibly dated with an early “70’s” look, which not only clashed with the late 50’s style of home architecture, but guaranteed an even greater clash with any modern-style outdoor room we constructed. Luckily for the Peseks, we offered an even better landscaping plan than the one they had hoped for. We proposed the construction of a new outdoor room and an entirely new swimming pool. Both of these new structures would be built around the classical geometry of proportional right angles. This would allow a very modern design to compliment an older home, because basic geometric patterns are universal in many architectural designs used throughout history. In this case, both the swimming pool and the outdoor rooms were designed as interrelated quadrilateral forms with proportional right angles that created the illusion of lengthened distance and a sense of Classical elegance. This proved a perfect complement to a house that had originally been built as a symbolic emblem of a simpler, more rugged and absolute era. Though reminiscent of classical design and complimentary to the conservative design of the home, the interior of the outdoor room was ultra-modern in its array of comfort and convenience. The Peseks felt this would be a great place to hold birthday parties for their child. With this new outdoor room, the Peseks could take the party outside at any time of day or night, and at any time of year. We also built the structure to be fully functional as an outdoor kitchen as well as an outdoor entertainment area. There was a smoker, a refrigerator, an ice maker, and a water heater—all intended to eliminate any need to return to the house once the party began. Seating and entertainment systems were also added to provide state of the art fun for adults and children alike. We installed a flat-screen plasma TV, and we wired it for cable. The swimming pool was built between the outdoor room and the rear entrance to the house. We got rid of the old lagoon-pool design which geometrically clashed with the right angles of the house and outdoor room. We then had a completely new pool built, in the shape of a rectangle, with a rather innovative coping design. We showcased the pool with a coping that rose perpendicular to the ground out of the stone patio surface. This reinforced our blend of contemporary look with classical right angles. We saved the client an enormous amount of money on travertine by setting the coping so that it does not overhang with the tile. Because the ground between the house and the outdoor room gradually dropped in grade, we used the natural slope of the ground to create another perpendicular right angle at the end of the pool. Here, we installed a waterfall which spilled over into a heated spa. Although the spa was fed from within itself, it was built to look as though water was coming from within the pool. The ultimate result of all of this is a new sense of visual “ebb and flow,” so to speak. When Mr. Pesek sits in his couch facing his house, the earth appears to rise up first into an illuminated pool which leads the way up the steps to his home. When he sits in his spa facing the other direction, the earth rises up like a doorway to his outdoor room, where he can comfortably relax in the water while he watches TV. Many homeowners know that there is nothing more relaxing on a summer day than diving into the backyard pool after a day at work, spending a couple of hours with the kids on the weekends and enjoying a game of pool or just lying on the lawn with a cold drink and a good book. Many people love to have a pool in their backyard, but having one seems impossible due to the small open space. What will work best in your small backyard? There are many ways to enjoy amazing time on the yard, and a pool is a good idea as it can be installed almost anywhere, just a little bit of imagination. What's more, you can do it at a minimal cost. Sounds great, doesn't it!

Swimming pools are one of the best ideas to save space and give your home an exotic look. They are limited in size, they can be customized with water features such as waterfalls, water jets, lighting, an attractive fence that can be installed to make the patio or backyard look welcoming and protected at the same time.

Planting ideas for small pools.

Small design ideas for small pools look intriguing despite their small size. If you haven't heard of this interior, you may be wondering what it is? This is a swimming pool or small pool, usually filled with cold water and often used after a sauna or hot tub. A typical small pool designed for relaxation, not swimming. You won't play volleyball or swim comfortably in a pool, but if you want to relax on a hot day and take a dip in cool water, this type of pool is a good option.

Pools and sun lounger ideas.

There is some confusion between the small pool and the hot tub, probably due to the small size. However, the main difference between a pool and a hot tub is the temperature of the water. Hot tubs, as we all know, are filled with hot water while submerged pools are filled with cold water. Sometimes both are designed and built together if the available space allows it and if the homeowner wants to use both hot and cold water.

Pros and cons of small pools.

The growing demand for plunge pools is leading to an increase in the number of creative and original small pools that are perfectly matched in small backyards and create a fantastic atmosphere. These pools offer a number of benefits and the biggest one is space saving as they don't take up much space. In terms of health benefits, immersion in cold water after a workout or after a sauna is practiced by many athletes, and the cooling effect of water has been valued since ancient times. Another important advantage of these pools is that they require less water due to their small size. This means you will have less water consumption and lower operating costs overall. In terms of design, the options are plentiful and vary in shape, size and style, so every homeowner will find the perfect pool for their small backyard. The low cost is advantageous as the small size does not require a significant investment. The classic plunge pool does not require a pool water heating system, another savings in maintenance costs.

Unique ideas for interesting pools - disadvantages.

On the other hand, this is the type of pool where the whole family can't enjoy pool games and activities together. In the small pool you can't swim or play water volleyball. Mounting the springboard is almost impossible.

Why choose a small pool - advantages.

There are many reasons why people choose a small pool, and each has a different motivation. They are very suitable for long and narrow areas and are a great way to use the available space in a small garden.

Small pool design, tropical interior.

A small pool can take up all the available space in the courtyard. Small diameter pools are certainly not suitable for entertainment, but they provide a refreshing cool down on a hot day or meeting place.
