Susie Watson's interior design dos and don'ts masterclass
The founder of the company that bears her name, Susie Watson creates unique fabric designs, handmade furniture, pottery and home accessories, while also running a design service offering her uniquely English take on interiors to homeowners across the country.
We asked her for some of her decorating dos and don'ts at Christmas – from how to introduce color and what lighting to use, to how to bring a quintessential country-style touch to your festive scheme. Read on for her wonderful interior design tips, and get more Christmas decorating ideas in our dedicated feature.
1. How to decorate for the holidays
Here, Susie Watson advises what to do (and what to avoid) when decorating for Christmas.
- Try new textures and patterns. The warmth and vibrancy of kilim cushions and rugs are the perfect choice for this time of year.
- Layer your lighting. This includes wall lights and table lamps; try to bring additional comfort with colorful and textured shades.
- Blend old with new. A considered and inviting room manages to make even the newest item look like it’s been there forever.
- Consider fragrance. Gently spiced candles and a real tree are at the heart of that unforgettable festive scent we all want in our homes at Christmas.
And here are the elements Susie says you should avoid...
- Don't leave the table bare. A simple tablecloth creates the ideal backdrop for cosy suppers throughout the winter.
- Don't rule out faux flowers. Artificial blooms are attractive, more realistic nowadays and give you flexibility to mix and match varieties throughout the year.
- Don't become beholden to trends. Christmas is uniquely personal and bringing out the decorations year on year is part of its charm.
- Avoid bold, deep colors. They can be particularly striking in darker seasons, when we lose so much natural light.

2. How to successfully mix new and old
Susie is a big fan of combining classic heirloom pieces with new additions. Here's her advice on how to make it work in your home.
- Create a sense of belonging. When buying new, think about going for something that is slightly aged-looking with natural character so it blends seamlessly.
- Invest in classic looks. The special pieces that will be loved and last a lifetime.
- Embrace different finishes to give a room character. It’s a myth that everything has to perfectly match.
- Start a tradition. A festive napkin, serving dish or decoration with a family history adds something special when brought out at Christmas.
And according to Susie, here's what not to do when mixing old with new pieces...
- Don't pay attention to trends or fads. Everything is cyclical anyway and will come back around – always choose what you love and forget about what’s in fashion.
- Don't be afraid to bid. Get to know your local auction house – you’ll often find interesting, unusual pieces that will surprise you.
- Don't save something for best. It’s sad to keep your nicest things tucked away in cupboards – dust off your china and enjoy using it everyday.
3. How to introduce countryside touches
Here's how to get a country-style look to your scheme, according to Suzie.
- Select natural fabrics. Choose cotton, linen and wool to connect with the natural world.
- Consider the wall color and fabrics together. Like painting a picture, you begin with a color wash – a paint or patterned wallpaper – and build from there.
- Take in the view. Create a harmonious scheme with colors and patterns that will accentuate scenes beyond windows and doors
....and here's what to avoid to ensure you add successful countryside touches to your scheme...
- Don't crowd your windows. Avoid layering fussy drapes and blinds.
- Don't pick colors that are artificial or garish. Instead go for earthy shades that have links to nature.
- Don't be cushion-shy. Find a hero piece with a countryside theme, then add others in complementing linens, silks and velvets.
- Don't use cold white light. It can often look somewhat clinical – for a cozier feel go for 2700 kelvin bulbs.

Transforming a rented house into a gorgeous home
When I moved to a rented house, I desperately wanted it to feel like a home. I loved Susie Watson designs so when Claire, from the Marlow shop, arrived at our house with exquisite fabric samples, cushions, carpets and bead spreads, I was delighted. Claire listened to my ideas and deftly identified the colour palates and designs to perfectly suit every room of our family home. I am so grateful to her gentleness, vision and skill, and I am so excited with the amazingly beautiful results.

Home Making The Susie Watson Way
Over the last year I have had a number of orders from Susie Watson, the quality is outstanding and practical (We have a dog and grandchildren) each item is like a little gem and as all the colours work so well together I am able to build my collection over time. The overall look is so relaxed and inviting. I can honestly say my home looks more loved and welcoming with each addition. If you are looking to create your forever home I can thoroughly recommend Susie Watson Designs.

Handmade an excuse for poor quality.
Susie Watson Designs cannot sadly guarantee a perfect piece of furniture, this is taken from their own words. They hide behind a handmade ethos when you raise a complaint even when part of my new table is missing a section of the wooden carving detail in a very visible location.
I have sadly had to complain about one of their small side tables which was delivered today which cost £355 plus postage at £35. My complaint was to be met with this response from their head office below, copied and pasted from their email in reply.
————————————————-
“Hi Brian,
Thank you for your email!
Having looked at the photographs, the item does not look damaged - all of our furniture are unique pieces, carved by hand, and therefore not any one piece is the same – this does mean they can have slight quirks that we feel add character! Our furniture is not machine made, but in fact uses traditional methods going back hundreds of years - I have attached a copy of our Furniture Information guide which is also available in store and on our Website, which helps to explain the nature of our products.
I therefore can never send one that is 100% perfection, unfortunately this is not possible!
You are of course within your rights to return this item for a full refund, should you wish to.
Many thanks,
Charlotte”
——————————————
This statement that they cannot guarantee a perfect piece of furniture is rather worrying considering they classify themselves as a furniture shop on this review site and potential future customers should be made aware of this fact. Both Neptune, Oka and NKUKU who all sell furniture in a similar price bracket can achieve a high standard whilst making things of a hand made nature. The table I ordered is a fairly basic design but I liked it’s simplicity. I have asked for a replacement to be sent or a discount refunded to reflect the seconds quality. My offer to keep the table with an appropriate discount is because they cannot guarantee a perfect replacement and the replacement may therefore be of an even worse quality. I will update my review accordingly following their response to this request. I’m giving Susie Watson Designs every opportunity to put things right and show a decent level of customer service and acknowledge the issue without unnecessary excuses or further aggravation to me the customer.
I wish I could add photographs to my trustpilot review to demonstrate to your readers what I’m supposed to accept as it’s really quite bad, what they think is acceptable I’m sure any reasonable person would take issue with the quality of the goods supplied.
My advice in the meantime from my experience is to avoid purchasing furniture from Susie Watson Designs. It is clear they have factory production issues from the amount of seconds furniture shown for sale on their website. What constitutes a seconds or even a slight seconds (both terms being used on their website) at Susie Watson Designs? My table was sold at full price hence I was expecting it to be of a satisfactory or perfect quality, what’s been delivered any reasonable person would think is very much of a seconds quality. If you look up seconds on their website you’re met with this statement, Why Seconds? : It's often hard to spot why our seconds furniture is labelled seconds. These pieces are beautiful and fully functional. It’s astonishing then that my table with a missing section of wood carving which is easy to spot is classed as acceptable to then be charged at full price.
Sales order SO308069
I hope I can update this review with a positive outcome demonstrating that Susie Watson Designs have listened to the customer complaint and acted accordingly to resolve the issue by replacing the item or offering a discount refund to reflect the seconds condition of the table. The level of poor reviews on Trustpilot about Susie Watson Designs as a company is deeply worrying to read.
—————————————
Update, 19.10.22 Susie Watson Designs are not willing to assist me only to the extent of now saying by email that I can drive to their warehouse in Swindon and go through their stock of tables to try and find one in a decent condition and not broken. They will not refund the postage I have paid of £35 nor offer to cover my petrol for the 100 mile round trip journey to this warehouse. This is how this rogue company treat their customers who have spent a lot of money. It’s simply awful to treat people this way. Susie Watson Designs will happily take your money in exchange for Shoddy goods made at the lowest possible cost in India for maximin profit of its owner!

Fabulous shopping experience
We had a short break in Harrogate and visited the fabulous Susie Watson showroom wanting to buy a throw. The staff were so friendly and so very helpful in showing us the selection of throws along with cushions to complement our choice . Now home we love our new throw and planning a further trip to add to our recent purchase. Can't recommend the staff enough and the beautiful quality of the throw

Credit where it's due
I originally posted a negative review because my delivery was messed about. When the delivery was eventually made one of the pieces-Gustavian bench-was broken. The delivery men, never the less, left it in case we needed somewhere to sit. I contacted Charlotte at Susie Watson and she arranged for a delivery 4 days later to take away the broken bench and replace it. After a bad start credit where it's due in sorting out a problem and I am thrilled with the look of my new kitchen.

Thank you so much for your updated review and for awarding us 5 stars for our reaction to your initial delivery issue.
We are so pleased that your kitchen is now completed with a Susie Watson bench, dining table and dining chairs.
We look forward to helping you again in the future.

Had a wonderful mooch about 'Susie Watson Designs' whilst on our staycation in Salcombe. What a beautiful little store, the Lady within was so friendly and we had a lovely gabble about all things interiors.
Treated myself to four unashamedly feminine cushions, and a few other delightful little bits & bobs to take back to South Kensington; much needed info on the design service, for two guest bedrooms desperately in need of a spruce.
Many thanks!

'Hand-made' excuse to exclude SW from faulty cushion and bad customer service
I too, have fallen victim to their 'hande-made' excuse to exclude themselves for a faulty item. A cushion with a pompom trim has a very visible gap on one side, like one is missing. It's at the trim join, so clearly it has been cut too short. Was told, as it was hand-made each one is different. This isn't 'different', it's an excuse for poor quality control and bad customer service, as further emails are ignored.
Date of experience: August 23, 2021
Thank you for your review, we are very sorry to hear you are disappointed with your cushion. As you are aware they are hand-made and little differences between cushions do happen, but we would like you to be thrilled with your item so we will email you direct to offer a solution.

Great products and great service
We just received delivery of a Gustaviam table from Susie Watson and we are very pleased with it. The workmanship is great - obviously a handmade product - and it is really robust.
Took us ages to chose a suitable table and relieved we made the right choice.
Harrogate store was very helpful when we visited and the online service is also excellent- both quick to respond to questions, pleasant and polite.

I spent weeks researching Roman Blinds on numerous websites, but only one stood out. We ordered blinds for nine windows from Susie Watson Designs and the service was faultless from initial discussion to receiving our blinds. The fabric designs are subtle and elegant, exactly what we wanted and the quality superb. I have even managed to convince my husband we need blinds for the windows we had planned to leave bare!

I ordered two chesterfield sofas in grey red check wool, they are stunning. Really elegant pieces and incredibly comfortable, the front legs are on wheels which makes them really easy to move for cleaning too. I am thrilled, the workmanship rally shows. I also own some china pieces and they are my absolute favourites, hand-painted perfection. I’ll be shopping again.

Expensive postage
Being a regular customer I was appalled that I can no longer click and collect from my local Susie Watson store. To make matters SW have increased their delivery charge to £15 for their fabric. This makes their expensive fabrics even more costly. I don’t need my fabric delivered on a roll so why not give customers the choice. Most stores offer free click and collect. Are you trying to chase your customers away by offering even less customer services, if so you are succeeding.
Date of experience: July 11, 2021
Hi Flora; we are really trying to sort this out. Our new fabric Warehouse means that most of our fabrics are now stored and sent out centrally. Lots of our fabrics, particularly our linens are sent on a roll to avoid creasing. We are going to start making it possible for smaller amounts of certain fabrics (non linens and under 3M) to be folded and sent (to save the postage cost of a roll). Please bear with us - we're working as hard as we can to fix this. Warmest wishes SWD Team.

Judging by some other recent reviews
Judging by some other recent reviews, I must be one of the lucky ones! Have ordered a couple of lampshades, cushions, a throw and a lamp base recently. Despite being processed in 3 separate transactions, all arrived promptly, well packaged and with clear communication. I am very pleased. Given the pricing of some top end items though, I’m not sure I would risk it!

I recently made my first purchase with…
I recently made my first purchase with Susie Watson Designs and my dog "Finley" was eagerly awaiting delivery of his new bed. Unfortunately when the dog bed arrived it was damaged and whilst this was disappointing the service I then received to resolve the issue was exceptional. After emailing customer services I got a response straight away (outside of what I would expect to be normal working hours). The employee apologised for my experience and said they would call the next day which they did. They made arrangements to collect the damaged product and replace it with a new one in the same day which was very efficient. Throughout the process the lady who helped me remained in constant communication and was extremely personal and helpful. My experience has resulted in one very happy dog and a returning customer. Exceptional service well done!

If you've ever watched This Is Us and cried ugly, you wouldn't be alone. Actress Susan Kelechi Watson, known for her on-screen talent as Beth Pearson and as Janet in Louis , is taking the world by storm with her brutal and versatile acting skills.
After an eventful 2020, fans are wondering if the actress is pregnant.

So Susan Kelechi Watson is pregnant?
Like many actresses, Susan keeps her personal life a secret, so her social media profiles have had little information other than promoting her future projects. While fans of This is Us Love all the content related to the show, those interested in Susan's personal life will have to be left on their toes.

ad Susan was previously engaged to actor Jaime Lincoln Smith, but in November 2020 she took to Instagram Stories candidly to announce that she had recently gotten married.
“And I thought that loneliness would be the only thing that would happen to me this year. #TwentyTwenty' she captioned the message. Currently, she is the only one who solves the gap problem.
The couple have only been engaged for a year, and Today, captured her now-deleted Instagram post from September 2019. The photo was of a beautiful sapphire engagement ring with "Forever Ever..." They will say their love / And they will know her love / For when they call her name / she will answer love / Without hesitation." ~ me. '
While this poem and the stunning ring certainly looked picturesque, it looks like Forever Ever wasn't on the cards this time.

The former couple don't have children, leaving fans wondering if Susan is still with someone new.
Unfortunately, the pregnancy seems to be all speculation and the actress has shown no signs of settling down anytime soon. While her character Beth on the show has kids, it looks like Susan has no plans to have them, at least not at the moment.
After all, with so many new projects and a new season of This is us , she doesn't have time!

What are Susan's upcoming projects?
While 2020 may not have brought much in the relationship department, Susan has been busy with new and exciting projects, including her first ever animated feature film! She first filmed an adaptation of the incredible Between the World and Me Roman Ta-Nehisi Coates for HBO Max during the pandemic, which premiered on November 21, 2020 as a TV special.
