What is the best cordless vacuum?
The best cordless stick vacuums are lightweight and maneuverable without sacrificing the cleaning power of a corded model. After years of tests, our favorite is the versatile Dyson V15 Detect, which offers top-tier cordless cleaning power and attractive ergonomics. We think it's worth the splurge at $750 -- but don't worry if that's beyond your budget, as there are plenty of other excellent options we can recommend that cost less.
To find them, we've spent countless hours testing out the top models from brands like Shark, Bissell, Dyson, Tineco and more at the CNET Home product testing lab in Louisville, Kentucky. Specifically, we run a rigorous slate of tests to determine each cleaner's capabilities when it comes to picking up a variety of messes on a variety of different floor types. Whether it's sucking fine particles like dust and sand out of thick, plushy carpets or collecting crumbs and pet hair off of hardwood floors, we take a complete look at how each vacuum performs in a controlled setting before recommending anything.
So which cordless vacs did the best in our tests? Glad you asked. Our top cordless vacuum picks are listed below -- and keep checking back, because we update this list periodically whenever new models make their way into our lab.

Dyson V15 Detect
Best cordless vacuum overall
Say hello to the best Dyson cordless vacuum, the $750 Dyson V15. As the company's flagship cordless vacuum, the V15 has a sky-high price to match. It's by far the most expensive machine in our test group. Like its predecessor the V11, the V15 ripped through our suite of vacuum cleaner tests with ruthless competence.
This cordless stick vacuum didn't just outperform competitors from other brands. The V15 demonstrated more suction power than the Dyson V11, the previous cordless vacuum champion. The V15 also achieved these cleaning performance results on our most difficult trial, sand.
It was able to remove 88.4% of test sand we placed on midpile carpeting. The V11 managed 71.6% on the same test. More impressively, the V15 pulled 95.3% of sand particles we dropped onto low-pile carpeting. That's a lot better than the 78.4% the V11 was able to muster here. The V15 is a great cordless vacuum for pet hair, too: No matter if it was vacuuming across hardwood, low-pile, or midpile carpeting, the V15 barely left a tuft in its wake.
A few other features help set the V15 Detect apart. One is the vacuum's Laser Slim Fluffy cleaner head. Designed for hard flooring, it shines a green laser out onto the floor ahead as you clean. Its purpose is to highlight dust and other small bits of debris otherwise hard to spot with the naked eye. The system does work and we observed plenty of dirt we'd normally miss. One drawback though is that the laser isn't visible under strong indoor lighting or sunlight.
Also interesting is a readout on the back of the vacuum. This report lists the ratio of dirt collected by particle size. Other than that, and a battery that's easier to remove, the D15's bagless vacuum design remains much the same. That's a good thing, since we found both models' dustbins easy to empty.
Bundled with the vacuum are seven different cleaning attachments, including the Laser Slim Fluffy. You also get a High Torque cleaner head, a Hair screw tool and crevice tool, just to name a few. All this adds up to why the Dyson V15 Detect is the best Dyson cordless vacuum, if spending lots of money is no barrier.

How we test cordless stick vacuums
Putting cordless vacuums through their paces isn't as complicated as testing a robot vacuum cleaner, but it still takes lots of time and careful effort to find the best cordless vacuum.
We hauled in 10 of the latest models from leading vacuum brands with high user ratings and reviews, and ran them through a series of tests designed to measure overall proficiency. We also tested cordless vacuums in a range of prices to see how much of a difference you can expect when you opt for a pricier model over a budget pick.
Testing cordless vacuums on different flooring
We run each vacuum in a straight line across three different surfaces (hardwood, low-pile carpet and midpile carpet). On all three test beds, the test area is 30.25 inches long.
The width of the test bed is proportional to the vacuum's nozzle width. We measure this width ourselves. We also use nozzle width, plus the flooring type, to calculate the soil density for each test, per International Electrotechnical Commission guidelines. The IEC is a global standards body responsible for managing testing procedures, among other things, for vacuum manufacturers.
Enlarge ImageWe test vacuums on three types of floor surfaces.
Tyler Lizenby/CNETTesting the cleaning ability of each cordless vacuum
We use three types of soil. To simulate small particle size, we use a mix of play sand and landscaping sand. To emulate larger dirt particles, we use uncooked black rice. To see how vacuums deal with pet hair, we use our mixture of clippings sourced to us through our local pet groomer.
We run tests in a straight line across all three floor types.
Brian Bennett/CNETWe perform three runs (at minimum) on each floor type. We also test suction power with sand and rice separately. That comes to at least 18 tests per vacuum. We weigh the vacuum's dust bin both before and after each run.

When choosing the best vacuums in various categories we considered other factors associated with each. We noted any vacuums with especially short battery life or a particularly heavy weight that might make them a less desirable option.
Cordless vacuum battery life and runtime
Most of the vacuums on our list feature a runtime of 40 minutes before needing another charge. The Dyson V15 was the exception with a full 60 minutes of runtime. In truth, it's a rare occasion that one would need more than 40 minutes of runtime for a single vacuuming session. Because of this, battery life was not weighted as heavily as other features.
Cordless vacuum weight, size and bin capacity
All of the cordless vacuums were between 4 and 6 pounds, but none were so heavy that it affected our recommendation. All of the vacuums on this list were also very similar in height and overall size. The Dyson models are both roughly 49 inches while the Tineco A11 is shorter at just 43 inches tall.
The Dysons and Tineco all have bin volumes of about 0.6 liters. Our budget pick, the Moosoo XL-618A, has double that capacity (1. 3 liters) so you'll need to empty the bin less often.
Cordless vacuum warranties
The standard warranty for cordless vacuums is a two-year limited warranty and each vacuum on this list meets that standard. In general, you should expect your cordless vacuum to last longer than two years but it's nice to have a backup plan in case something breaks within that time frame.
Other cordless vacuums we tested that didn't make the cut
Here's a list of the other cordless stick vacuums we tested besides the models we've recommended above.
- Hoover OnePwr Blade Max
- Hoover Linx
- Bissell Iconpet
- Onson D18E
Cordless vacuum FAQs
Which cordless vacuum has the most suction power?
Right now, based on our tests, the cordless vacuum with the best suction power is the Dyson V15 Detect. It removed the most sand, rice and pet hair out of all the stick vac cleaners we've evaluated so far. And it did so across multiple floor types.
Are pricey Dyson vacuums worth the money?
One company, in particular, saw this cordless trend coming. British company Dyson was the first to pioneer this field with a series of capable -- yet pricey -- Cyclone V series stick vacs designed with impressive suction and cleaning power to leave the competition in the dust. Rivals have since followed suit and now sell cordless vacuums of their own. Some manufacturers of cordless vacuum cleaners have even shamelessly cloned Dyson products. Others are distinctive new riffs on the cordless vacuum, with innovative dust-busting features all their own.
Despite the many knockoffs, Dyson vacs still perform at a higher level than other brands, in our experience. Perhaps it's the head start it's had in refining these smaller machines or the extensive research and development that goes into making them.
Dysons are pricey, but worth the money if you have it to spend. If not, there are plenty of cheaper cordless vacuums that will do the job and keep your home clean.
How long should a cordless vacuum last?
Each of the cordless vacuums on our list includes a two-year limited warranty but a quality model should last you significantly longer than that. That said, cordless vacuums do take a beating and you shouldn't expect any model to last much longer than five years if used regularly. This is certainly something to consider when selecting a model.
Having your vacuum serviced after the warranty has expired may not also be worth the money, depending on the particular issue. To suss out any potential lemons, we dig through buyer reviews on multiple retailers to see if any vacuum brands or models have consistent breakage issues, either with the motor or external parts.
Why you should trust us
Our team of CNET experts, editors and lab technicians has been testing vacuums in a smart home and testing warehouse located in Louisville, for over 10 years. In that time, we've refined our testing methods and assessments in a controlled environment to measure the proficiency of robot vacuums, full-sized models and cordless stick vacuums alike. For more check out this detailed article on how we test vacuums at CNET.

A good cordless vacuum is a helpful addition to any household cleaning arsenal. When you don't need to worry about staying in range of an outlet, it's easy to clean small, out-of-the-way areas not only inside your home but also in tighter spaces like car interiors. You also don't have to worry about a power cord getting snagged on a piece of furniture and bringing a frustrating pause to your cleaning session. However, despite recent strides in extending overall battery life, a cordless vacuum still can't offer the worry-free indefinite runtime of a corded vacuum. For many, however, this trade-off is worth the near-infinite range that these appliances have.
We've tested over 130 vacuum cleaners, and below are our recommendations for the best cordless vacuum cleaners to buy. We selected these picks based on their performance on different surface types and their feature set, battery life, and price. For more options, look at our lists of the best vacuums, our best cordless stick vacuums, and the best vacuums for high-pile carpet.

The Dyson V15 Detect is the best cordless vacuum we've tested. This vacuum has a 230AW suction motor, which is remarkably potent for a vacuum of this type and allows it to clear away a wide range of debris on different surfaces. Its onboard piezo sensor measures and counts debris being sucked into the vacuum so that you can keep an eye on allergen levels inside your home, while its surface detection system allows it to automatically raise its suction power on carpeted floors. This vacuum isn't too heavy and is fairly easy to maneuver in cluttered areas. Unfortunately, its strong suction force can cause it to get bogged down on thicker rugs.
If you're looking for a cordless vacuum that's even better suited for those with allergies, the Samsung Bespoke Jet is a solid option, as it comes with a charging rack that doubles as a self-emptying station; with the press of a button, debris is sucked from the vacuum's dustbin through an airtight seal into a dirtbag. However, the Samsung vacuum lacks Dyson's automatic power adjustment feature, and its twin roller floorhead is bulkier and makes it less maneuverable.

If you're shopping at an upper mid-range price point, the Miele Triflex HX1 is among the best cordless vacuums we've tested. This uniquely-designed cordless vacuum can be used as a stick, upright, or handheld vacuum, letting you quickly adapt to several different cleaning situations on the fly. It also feels well-built for a vacuum of this type, with a body made mainly from high-grade plastic. Unfortunately, it has a much smaller dirt compartment than the Dyson V15 Detect, and its max battery life of a little over 30 minutes doesn't give you nearly as much time to clean. If you're looking for a similarly-priced alternative with better battery performance, the Dyson V12 Detect Slim is a solid alternative, albeit with an even smaller dustbin and flimsier build quality.
Performance on bare surfaces is exceptional, and the vacuum does a good job of clearing away debris on carpeted floors without getting bogged down in plush rugs. Its surface detection system lets it adapt to the surface type that you're on, and it can even stop its brushroll automatically if it gets tangled in something.

The Samsung Jet 75 is a great option if you're looking at the affordable end of the scale. It feels a little less sturdy than the Miele Triflex HX1, but it does offer quite a bit of bang for the buck. Its 200AW suction motor is very powerful for a cordless vacuum in this price range, enabling it to easily clear away small and heavy debris on a range of surface types. The Complete variant of this vacuum comes with two batteries, each of which can provide over an hour of use, making it a much better fit for longer cleaning sessions than the Miele. Its five-stage filtration system is also highly effective in sealing allergens.
The Complete model with a self-emptying base station, which reduces hands-on maintenance requirements since you won't have to empty its dustbin yourself. Unfortunately, it lacks an automatic surface detection system, and if that's a feature you're looking for in a cordless vacuum, check out the Tineco PURE ONE S11. However, the Tineco falls short of the Samsung in debris pickup performance and feels flimsier.

The best budget cordless vacuum we've tested is the Wyze Cordless Vacuum. While its thin plasticky body feels less durable than the Samsung Jet 75, it's cheaper and still delivers strong overall debris pickup on most surfaces, though its weaker suction motor does mean it struggles more with lifting debris from deep cracks and crevices. It performs impressively well on carpets, is highly effective in dealing with pet hair, and does a good job on bare floors, though bulky material can get stuck at the entry to its dustbin. Unlike many other budget-friendly vacuums, it has a HEPA filter to trap fine particles as you clean, which is great if you suffer from allergies. It supplies a maximum of one hour of runtime in its most energy-efficient 'ECO' mode, though its runtime drops to a little over 10 minutes if you run it in its high-power 'TURBO' mode.
If you're looking for a budget-friendly cordless vacuum that struggles less with bulky debris, you could consider the Tineco PURE ONE X, which has a longer battery life and charges much faster. However, it doesn't perform as well on carpeted floors as the Wyze, has a smaller dustbin, and uses a non-removable battery, so you can't swap in a new pack if the current unit's performance degrades. If you prioritize build quality, the Samsung Jet 60 is better built than the Wyze but has a shorter battery life.

If you want a cordless vacuum with a higher capacity dustbin than most stick models, the Shark Vertex Pro Powered Lift-Away is a very good option. Compared to the similarly-priced Samsung Jet 75, it exchanges maneuverability for a larger internal dustbin that won't need emptying as often. Besides, it's still more maneuverable and easier to store than the average corded upright, like the Shark Rotator Lift-Away ADV. Its 'Lift-Away' design enables you to pick up and carry its canister body separately from its floorhead, making it easier to clean hard-to-reach areas like on top of shelves or behind couches and chairs. It has a solid range of attachments, including an upholstery tool that does a great job of cleaning pet hair on fabric surfaces and a fine-bristle dusting brush for cleaning delicate surfaces.
Performance is strong across the board, with good debris pickup on bare floors and high-pile carpet. While it does offer two different levels of surface adjustment, these settings only affect the speed of its brushrolls, not their height, so the vacuum can sometimes get stuck on dense shag-pile carpeting. Need a more portable cordless upright? The Hoover ONEPWR Evolve Pet is worth considering. However, it feels considerably less robust and offers terrible air filtration performance.

Notable Mentions
- Shark Vertex Pro Lightweight: The Shark Vertex Pro Lightweight is a cordless stick vacuum that represents a good alternative to the Miele Triflex HX1, thanks to its long battery life and flexible wand. However, it's notably heavier and doesn't perform as well on carpets. See our review
- JASHEN V16: The JASHEN V16 is a relatively affordable cordless stick vacuum with two swappable brushrolls: one for bare floors and one for carpets. Unfortunately, compared to the similarly-priced Wyze Cordless Vacuum, it struggles with bulky debris like cereal, which can clog the entry to its dirt compartment. See our review
- Samsung Jet 90 Complete: The Samsung Jet 90 Complete is a great alternative to the Dyson V15 Detect if you're looking for a slightly larger dirt compartment and broadly similar overall performance. It lacks the Dyson vacuum's dirt sensor and automatic power adjustment capability. See our review
- Samsung Jet 70: The Samsung Jet 70 has a lot in common with the cheaper Samsung Jet 60, as it uses the same 150AW motor and 1800 mAh battery but comes bundled with a more effective multi-surface floorhead. However, it has a less powerful motor than the only slightly pricier Samsung Jet 75, and it uses lower-capacity batteries, resulting in a shorter runtime. See our review

How to choose a cordless vacuum cleaner - a ranking of the best Bissell models for the home
When can a cordless vacuum cleaner come in handy?
Previously, battery-powered upright vacuum cleaners had less suction power than their corded counterparts. Now the situation has changed. Modern manufacturers from America and Europe have achieved comparable power and efficiency parameters for vacuum cleaners. Therefore, more and more often the question arises - which vacuum cleaner is better wired or wireless?
Each type of home vacuum cleaner, whether it works independently from the mains or can vacuum without wires, has its own strengths and weaknesses. Wired ones are more familiar, do not require charging, but are very bulky and not very maneuverable. Cordless vacuum cleaners are very mobile, light and manageable. They can reach into any corner and under furniture. They are easy to carry and easy to store. You have to pay for this with slightly less engine power, and hence suction power.
Due to slightly reduced power, wireless models were more often bought as an additional cleaning device for the house. Less often they were taken as the main instrument for a small studio or one-room apartment. Now a cordless vacuum cleaner shows high efficiency if:
- you live in a private house;
- you clean regularly because of the presence of small children at home;
- you or family members are allergic to dust, wool or other household allergens;
- there are animals at home;
- there is very little time left for cleaning, so using a conventional vacuum cleaner is labor-intensive and inconvenient.
Types of cordless vacuum cleaners
The main advantage of the battery vacuum cleaner is its mobile design. They are battery operated and do not use any wires. Models of vacuum cleaners differ from each other. There are 2 main types of wireless units: manual and vertical.
Manual
Have a compact size. Designed to solve local cleaning tasks. They can collect crumbs, remove dust from books and collect animal hair, and clean the upholstery of car seats. A full-scale cleaning of the floor with such a vacuum cleaner will not work, but this is not his task.
Hand-held units have low suction power and need to be recharged regularly. However, they are light in weight and do not burden the brush during cleaning. They are easy to carry to the place of cleaning or transported in a car.
Vertical
Such devices are just the main competitor to conventional vacuum cleaners. We will dwell on them in more detail.
The design of this appliance is somewhat similar to a mop. It has a long handle and a brush at the end. Main advantages:
- light weight: most models weigh about 5 kg;
- good maneuverability: the design is easy to control;
- small dimensions: the device has a vertical structure, takes up very little space, especially when compared with traditional corded vacuum cleaners with a bag;
- large set of functions: many models have a design that can be used in two versions: a full-fledged vacuum cleaner and a detachable hand unit. It is suitable for quick and easy cleaning of local dirt.
To obtain such characteristics of an upright vacuum cleaner, several indicators had to be sacrificed, which caused such shortcomings in some models: not all devices cope;
There are 2 opposing opinions about the use of upright vacuums: some users believe that cordless models are better for keeping order, but a full cleaning can only be done with a corded vacuum cleaner with high power. Others find that cordless vacuum cleaners can handle difficult cleaning tasks just fine. They are lighter and more maneuverable, they are more convenient to store.
Reality is somewhere between these opinions. If you live in a large house with carpets, carpet, laminate, or other floor coverings, you can't do without a powerful vacuum cleaner. There are already modern wireless models, for example, the BISSELL 2765N CrossWave Cordless Max cordless washing vacuum cleaner. It is able to work up to 30 minutes and clean up to 100m 2 . This is the size of a spacious apartment, townhouse or small house. At the same time, the vacuum cleaner has high power and, due to its universal brush, does an excellent job with both smooth floors and carpets. And its main advantage: it simultaneously washes, cleans and dries the surface. That is, you will spend 3 times less time on cleaning, and the efficiency will be maximum. Instead of a dust collector, this vacuum cleaner has a water filter. As a result of the work, dust is sucked in and driven through the water, where dust and debris settle, and the air is additionally cleaned through a fine air filter. With such a vacuum cleaner, you can easily clean the floor not only from dust, but also from wool, larger particles of dirt, immediately wash the floor and freshen the air.
If you have a small apartment, a simpler wireless machine will suffice, such as the BISSELL 2602D ICON pet for dry cleaning or the BISSELL 2582N CrossWave Cordless for dry and wet cleaning at the same time.
How to choose the best upright cordless vacuum cleaner?
Now let's talk about the important parameters by which you need to choose a good vacuum cleaner.
Modes and controls
In addition to dry cleaning, there are models of vacuum cleaners that allow you to do wet cleaning, for example, the BISSELL 2582N CrossWave Cordless cordless washing vacuum cleaner. It is one of the best cordless upright vacuum cleaners in the world. At the same time, it collects debris, by pressing 1 button on the handle it supplies water with detergent to the roller, washes the coating and immediately dries it. Cleaning has never been so fast.
To facilitate cleaning in dark corners or hard-to-reach areas, the nozzle is sometimes supplemented with LED lighting. With it, you can be sure of high-quality cleaning of the entire area of \u200b\u200bthe house.
Choose models that have at least 2 operating modes: classic and turbo. The first is used for cleaning smooth surfaces, the second - for carpets, because. suction power increases.
The control unit in cordless vacuum cleaners is usually located on the handle. This is convenient because you can switch with one hand. In simple models, everything works on buttons, and in complex and expensive vacuum cleaners, touch controls can be built in.
It would be an advantage if a self-cleaning function is provided.
The operating parameters and status of the vacuum cleaner are indicated by notifications on the display or indicators. The minimum required parameters for convenience in general:
- enable status;
- the level of fullness of the container and the need to clean it;
- the remaining charge of the vacuum cleaner;
- the need to replace the filter.
The vacuum cleaner is a complex electrical technique, so safety is important. Most vacuum cleaners have an auto-off function in case of overheating.
Equipment
Many vacuum cleaners are equipped with a removable unit. It is a detachable mini vacuum cleaner. In addition to it, devices can be equipped with:
- electric brush;
- turbo brush;
- narrow crevice nozzle for cleaning hard-to-reach places;
- furniture brush;
- parquet nozzle.
Most models come with a special wall mount that allows them to be hung on the wall. In this state, the vacuum cleaner is easy to recharge and takes up less space. However, its fixed position will be required and damage to the wall is possible.
Therefore, wireless models such as the BISSELL CrossWave series have been developed to be able to stand and charge on a dedicated mobile base anywhere.
To make storage more convenient, some models have a folding handle. This makes the vacuum cleaner more compact.
Dust collector and filters
All wireless gadgets have a cyclone container. It is technologically advanced and easy to use, easy to clean.
A special funnel is formed inside the container, in which particles of dust and dirt are filtered out. There can be several cameras operating on this principle, which improves filtering. Even small particles of debris do not pass through such a system. There is also a pre-motor filter that protects the vacuum cleaner motor from dirt getting into it. Also, sometimes an additional HEPA cleaning filter (hepa-filter) is installed, which traps the smallest particles of dirt.
We recommend considering models in which the container can be emptied without having to touch the dusty and dirty elements.
When choosing a vacuum cleaner for cleaning the house, you need to pay attention to the volume of the dust container (dust collector). It can hold 0.3-0.8L. Large storage facilities are convenient because they need to be cleaned less frequently. However, they increase the weight and dimensions of the device.
Power and noise
The most important issue that concerns users is the power of a cordless vacuum cleaner. In simple devices, it starts at 500 watts. In portable is 30-150 watts.
Low power results in the following benefits: energy is saved and battery consumption is reduced. But how does this affect performance?
Although these vacuum cleaners have little power, they do their job well. This is mainly achieved thanks to the special shape of the brush: rotating, it picks up the debris and directs it into the dust bag. A cordless vacuum cleaner can be just as efficient as a corded one. The noise level during operation is also about the same - 70-80 dB.
Battery
Built-in batteries are available in two types.
1. Nickel-cadmium - cheap, but have a "memory effect". To ensure that their capacity does not drop over time, such batteries must be discharged to a minimum each time and charged to 100% after cleaning.
2. Lithium Ion - more expensive, but their capacity and efficiency remain the same throughout their life.
Battery life depends on battery capacity. On average, the battery life is enough for 15-60 minutes of continuous battery life. The parameters often indicate the period of operation at a minimum load, so pay attention to these numbers. It usually takes 3-8 hours to charge the battery.
Output
If you need to choose a vacuum cleaner for cleaning an apartment, but light, compact and powerful, take a modern cordless vacuum cleaner. You can look in the direction of washing vacuum cleaners, but the usual model will do its job very well.
