Canopy over the bed: types and functions
Maria Lavrentieva20.10.2020
12540
A bedroom is a place where a person rests and relaxes. Equipping the bedroom, you need to take care not only of functionality, but also of aesthetics. The bedroom should evoke only positive emotions so that a person can fall asleep with pleasant thoughts. One of the important elements of the bedroom interior is a canopy over the bed. With a canopy, it is easy to travel back in time and feel like a king or queen, at worst - a duke or duchess. In our article, we analyze the types of canopies and their functions.
The word "canopy" comes from the Latin "baldacinus" - "expensive silk fabric from Baldacco: Baghdad". It came to the Russian language under Peter I. ornate carvings, jewels, gilding. During the colonial period, when the goods of the Dutch and British East India Companies were popular, canopies made of printed cotton came into fashion: luxurious Indian chinets, and later - more budgetary French toile. Now these canopies or curtains for the bed can be seen in the halls of Versailles and some other French castles.
In ancient Rus', the use of a canopy is associated with religion. Canopies were called the word "canopy", it is located in churches, above the throne, behind the iconostasis. The inner part of the canopy was often painted in the form of a starry sky, sometimes a dove with golden rays (a symbol of the Holy Spirit) was depicted here. Similar canopies were installed over the sources of holy water, for example, in Suzdal monasteries, in the Trinity-Sergius Lavra.
Today canopies perform both aesthetic and utilitarian functions. Canopy beds are used in bedrooms of various styles, as well as in the rooms of newborn babies.
What is the canopy for
-
Performs the function of zoning - separates the bed from the rest of the room. This is especially true for apartments where one room is both a living room and a bedroom. Also, this option is suitable for young parents who have a crib in the bedroom. On the one hand, you will always be close to the baby, and on the other - complete privacy. If a four-poster bed is located in the bedroom-living room, of course, you won’t be able to hide from the noise in the midst of a fun party. But you can arrange friends on the couch, and everyone will feel comfortable.
- Protective function. In the presence of a canopy, the bed is better protected from insects, drafts, dust. With a canopy, a calm sleep without excess light is provided to you even during the day, but on condition that you choose the right fabric. The canopy will become an indispensable item for everyone who does not recognize air conditioners, and in the summer always sleeps with an open window. Mosquitoes will definitely not get to you at night, and dust will not settle on your skin.
- The canopy closes the bed from prying eyes. It is also relevant for common areas in which the bed is located. And it is also an indispensable accessory for a crib, especially if the baby wakes up from any rustle.
What are the canopies for the bed
There are several types of canopies depending on the type of their fastening.
-
Canopy on supporting supports - perhaps the most common and popular model. The design is attached to the legs or bed frame, beams are located on top, on which a canopy or curtain for the bed is hung. This option is best suited for large rooms. Depending on the height of the ceiling, you can leave the air space on top, or you can make supports close to the ceiling. After sleeping, you can leave the canopy in the same condition as at night, or it is interesting to drape it around the supporting supports of the bed.
- Canopy in the form of a tent or dome. This design is suspended from the ceiling above the bed, the fabric falls down at an angle. An important advantage of such a canopy model is that it is less bulky than a structure on supports, visually “eats up” less space. By the way, a tent is suitable not only for decorating a bed, but with its help you can decorate a children's corner: with soft pillows and toys. It is important that the canopy design reaches the floor. A child will be able to read a book or draw in such a tent-hut.
- The canopy on the eaves is attached to the ceiling, it can be placed above the bed, for example, in the form of a sail. The advantage of fastening is that additional structures are not required.
- Canopy-beam. Ideally, you need a special stand for it, but you can get by with a straight wall cornice. This canopy is laconic and simple, and at the same time perfectly completes the look of the room. The disadvantage of this option: the canopy completely loses its functional purpose and becomes an exclusively decorative element.
- Canopy cape. A bed with a high frame does not have to be hung with textiles from floor to ceiling. The symbolic canopy serves as the final decorative touch that softens the space of the bedroom. In order not to complicate your life, it is better to fix the canvas with the help of ribbons sewn to it. Such a canopy is mobile, it is easy to remove and move.
- Canopy tape. Another version of the symbolic and decorative canopy. The advantage of this option is that you don't need a lot of fabric to create this effect. As in the case of a canopy cape, it is better to fasten the structure - with ribbons or textile fasteners, which should be hidden under the folds of the fabric: the point is that the ribbon hovered over the bed without obvious signs of fastening.
-
The semi-circular canopy at the headboard has a rather decorative function, covers only a small part of the bed and is a continuation of the headboard.
Which fabrics are suitable for canopies
Canopies and bed curtains are made from different types of fabrics. Natural fabrics that collect less dust and “breathe” are best suited. Let's consider some of them.
- Canopies and curtains for the bed are made from different types of fabrics. Natural fabrics that collect less dust and “breathe” are best suited. Let's consider some of them.
- If the main function of your canopy is zoning, pay attention to delicate, airy, light fabrics. For an adult bedroom, tulle or a veil would be a suitable choice, for a child's bedroom - cotton and linen. The latter pass air well, give the opportunity to "breathe", but easily wrinkle.
- Batiste, satin and tulle will make your canopy more dense, opaque. Please note that you cannot completely curtain the bed with thick fabrics - this is unsafe, especially in children's bedrooms.
- Tapestry, jacquard, velvet will suit those who love a luxurious, royal, rich-looking interior style. But keep in mind that these are quite heavy fabrics, so the fastening must be appropriate. Velvet perfectly absorbs sound and light, but collects a lot of dust and wears out fairly quickly. It is distinguished by seasonality - this material is best used in winter, it is of little use for the warm season. The above fabrics are best used in spacious rooms.
-
Silk and satin will make your bedroom passionate and romantic at the same time. But these fabrics are very capricious, they quickly get dirty, puffs easily appear on them, spoiling the appearance.
Please note that the color scheme of the canopy and the structure to which it is attached must be in harmony with the overall palette of the bed and bedroom.
Which canopy color is best?
In recent years, the theme of environmental friendliness and closeness to nature has been very relevant in interior design. If these are close to you, then choose the color of textiles in natural, natural shades: beige, white, brown, coffee, etc. All these colors will be a little muted, but they will not bother the owners for many years.
It is also important to remember that the color of the canopy in the bedroom should be combined with the textile decoration of the room: bed linen, curtains, decorative pillows. If your bedroom is in the style of Provence or classic, then you can choose a canopy to match the rest of the bedroom textiles, in other cases, you can choose both opposite colors and those close in shade, but a few tones lighter or darker.
In which interiors canopies are used for bed
- Scandinavian minimalism, popular today, involves a small set of furniture. For a canopy in this style, a support or ceiling structure with a minimum number of elements is suitable. It is better to use translucent, light fabrics, the canopy should be light, cloudy, airy.
- Loft. Wood and metal are suitable for a canopy structure, the canopy frame itself can be deliberately rough. We recommend using plain, dense fabrics of “factory” colors: brick, black, brown, sand.
- Neoclassical style combines the luxury of jacquard, tapestry fabrics and the lightness of the second airy layer (tulle, veil). Patterned carved bed elements, tassels, weaving and fringe on fabrics, drapery will perfectly complement this style. A hipped or domed canopy in such an interior will make the bedroom atmosphere even more aristocratic.
- Provence. Light, pastel colors of fabrics combined with floral ornaments, smoothed corners, soft shapes are ideal for a newlyweds' bedroom.
- Light, airy, translucent fabrics are suitable for decorating a bedroom in an oriental style.
- Loved by many, the hygge style will ideally complement a light canopy in natural light colors or made of lace, sewn or macrame. By the way, since all adherents of the Danish style adore natural raw linen, you can safely bring this idea to life!
Remember, the choice of a canopy for decor must be approached with all responsibility. First, decide on its functionality, and only then try to correctly fit it into the environment. And do not forget that in the children's room, reliable fastening is especially important, while the fabric should be light and weightless. Then he will create a pleasant atmosphere and comfort.

We recently chose a nursery, noticed that almost all manufacturers recommend such options that something hangs over the child's bed, and sometimes these are quite voluminous cabinets. For a long time I had bookshelves that my father installed on the wall. And then somehow in the winter they collapsed, crushing the music center. Maybe, of course, I collected a lot of books on them, but here’s a fact for you. I can’t think that even half of them would fall on a sleeping child .. The shelves were Soviet, strong, and it wasn’t Ravshan that hung on the snot, but my father, who does everything honestly. But I look at repairs, people are not driven by this, they hang them.

I don't feel comfortable either when something is above the bed. We, here it was in a single room, fenced off a room for a child, and mirrors were hung on the wall to visually increase the space. One night, a mirror fell on the sleeping daughter. Everything worked out, the mirror did not break, but it hurt and frightened me very much. so I will never hang anything in the sleeping area on the wall again.

I don't hang. As a child, in a dream, a heavy carpet fell on me, I woke up from the fact that I was suffocating, it was difficult to get out of sleep. And before that, shelves hung there ... As I imagined ... Well, what for. I am also always surprised at the manufacturers, and even more so at those who buy this.

OOO..You are not alone. Once a shelf with books (attached by the father, to the conscience) collapsed on the desk. Usually in children's rooms, what hangs above the bed is not attached to the wall. This design is shaped like a "bridge" and is screwed to the cabinets that are on the sides of the bed. So it can't fall off. Here is an example of such a bridge: http://www.mebel-credit.ru/detskaya-mebel-adriatika/m-1975-most-nad-krovatyu-2-door-1-polka.htm

When we hung these shelves above the bed, and on the sides of the bed we have cabinets on both sides, so my husband, also fearing that God forbid they might fall off, made through holes from the cabinet to the hanging shelf and pulled them together with bolts. It turned out like a "P". The shelf, in addition to being fixed to the wall itself, is also reinforced on both sides with cabinets.

Oh, and we also have)) I also look at children's interiors and don't understand - why hang over the head? In a word, it’s also confused) and the sellers react this way - only those who don’t have children yet)) then they will also be perplexed)

You are not alone at all :), I am also against having something hanging over a sleeping child, so I never even consider such options. In our old apartment, a rack fell one night (it was from floor to ceiling and was attached to the wall ...) no one was hurt, but there was noise !! I don't understand how you can take risks for the sake of the harmony of the interior...

As a child, shelves hung over the headboard, but the walls were very thin... Once, one fastening came off, but not from the wall, but near the shelf itself... It was unpleasant when it became clear that could have been on the head. Now there is nothing above our heads and the child. Although, in the future, maybe, we will hang light shelves for soft toys

I will NEVER hang! There were 2 cases in my life. 1) Shelves that hung over the bed collapsed on my girlfriend, it was before my eyes, a terrible sight, if it crashed on a child like that - I don’t know what would happen. 2) In a rented apartment, shelves hung above the children's changing table, once foolishly we put an old hard drive on the top shelf and safely forgot about it. It fell off the shelf about a year later, and just when I was changing my son's clothes, next to his head, God ..., I got gray hair, it's good that it didn't hurt. For the youngest son, the diaper was moved away from these shelves.

Definitely not! And not only over the child's bed. In addition to the risk of falling, it is also terribly uncomfortable when something is hanging over your head)))

I also saw in my parents' apartments (mine and my husband's) how bookshelves fell down, very securely built into concrete walls by dads. Fortunately, in all cases they fell on the floor / sofas without hitting people. But it all looked terrible, especially at the thought that it could fall on people like that. ;-(( And large carpets also fell (fortunately, not entirely and not on people, but again, it was impressive). I had to hang a sconce over the children's beds, and more pictures, but only in the lightest frames without glass. But not in no shelves!!

I have never hung something like this and never will hang it over my bed. I have a rich imagination, as I imagine that a shelf or a wardrobe can fall on a sleeping child (or adult), I feel bad. A long time ago, a carpet hung over my bed, 1 more time a picture, a canvas without a frame. once this picture fell, although it seemed to be hanging securely, well, because was just a canvas, then they got off with just a fright, since then I don’t even hang pictures above the bed.

In modern children's rooms, the method of attaching shelves above the bed is absolutely safe, because the shelf is not attached to the wall, but hangs due to intersection ties, between cabinets, or on the 1st side if there is no cabinet, a support shield is placed.

I'm glad I'm not alone. I don’t like it either (it’s psychological, it seems to me, it “presses”) + according to Feng Shui, it’s kind of bad :) But the most priority is safety. They even refused to hang a shelf above the table, and it was not even planned to be above the bed - terribly ...
grusha C.B.
03/14/2011 13:14
It is psychologically pressing, rightly said. But modern designers love this business for some reason. And a lot of children's rooms are built according to this principle. They call it a "bridge" - it connects the cabinets / racks and then the whole composition looks better. It seemed to me that it was even very personal in appearance, but from the point of view of psychology and functionality - I refused this when designing a nursery. In her youth, she slept at a party under a bookshelf full of books. At night, the local cat amused itself by jumping on apartment furniture and accidentally throwing off everything that was there. As a result, I woke up at night in confusion from the fact that all the books from the shelf fell on me ... Well, my head was under the shelf and everything spilled out in the chest / stomach area. But there was little pleasant;)

I have already read above about modern methods of "hanging" shelves, but I can also tell a horror story. AT 90 years, Soviet bookshelves hung over my mother’s bed, once it was at NIGHT that they both collapsed, they didn’t hit by a miracle, no one even thought when they hung that they could fall ... They stood on top of each other just before (before they hung the wall), there was no load on the sag, it might have dried up, maybe it just ended unexpectedly. But there was a lot of roar and fear, as I remember right now. If now they make TYPE reliably, it might be worth a try, but even then...

and I hung it up and am very pleased, the shelves are not bulky, they don’t put pressure on my head, and because we don’t have enough space, the shelves are salvation, if you’re interested in the passport photo, folder repair password 6262

I don't hang, and I won't. And in general, this is not Feng Shui :-)

We have such children's furniture, BUT the shelves besides the walls are also screwed to the cabinets on both sides. Heavy things are not stored on these shelves. And it is very comfortable to sleep there, in the absence of a child, I myself am happy to settle down with him.

I don't hang anything over the beds. And in my youth, a flower in a pot fell on me, which stood on a shelf above the sofa in the kitchen. Since then I've been afraid of flowers on the walls :)

One gets the impression that something once hit everyone here ... And now no one hangs anything anywhere anymore. Why does everyone live in mansions, where there are so many storage places that children's fears calmly walk in their heads? A chandelier fell on me - moreover, when I passed under it. What now I do not groom under the chandeliers?? I hang shelves over the children's bed and sleep peacefully, because I myself controlled how they were attached. But everything is stored in their places, and not littered with rubbish

it's better not to take risks with children.... IMHO - it's better to hang these shelves over your bed, so at least you can give it to the head and precautions will increase

I didn't get hit. It fell nearby. Enough storage space. I wouldn't call it mansions))

Well, yes, if you choose - order in the house or a shelf on the head of a child, better, order, of course

They have been hanging for 2 years. See above how they strengthened it so that they would not fall.

No, I will never hang. Not even because I'm afraid that it's unsafe (with current technologies, it's all likely that it's really safe), but because of the psychological discomfort that you have "something" hanging over your head. At friends, some children were even afraid of hanging shelves at night.

I'm afraid and therefore I will never hang. Rather, it does not even concern the shelves, but there are more lockers. I don't even morally like these options

we also looked after the bedroom with hanging shelves at the head. then, as she imagined that something would be hanging over her head, she refused, despite saving space with such furniture. IMHO, security is more expensive. it is better to take a children's corner with shelves above the table than something will put pressure on the sleeping person above the bed, and also threaten to crumble

But I want such a child for my girls http://www.mebelclub.ru/children/ferretti-ferretti/ferretti-ferretti-16/ And now I doubt it. Although it is unlikely that the Italians would have created an unsafe design for children. Girls, what do you think?

Feretti were ordered from us many times, exactly similar options, there were no problems (pah, pah, pah), but the point here is not the Italians, but the walls on which everything will be attached, in the hands assemblers, in what you plan to load into these designs.
