25 Best Christmas Stairway Decor Ideas

Sarah Bartholomew; Sarah Ligorria-Tramp for Emily Henderson

Regardless of your age, Christmas morning always manages to evoke an urge to wake up at the crack of dawn, rush down the stairs, and head straight to your well-dressed tree. While most people might be fixated on that pile of presents, however, discerning design enthusiasts will have eyes for whatever decorations are lining the staircase. Whether you’ve added some twinkling lights or some lush strands of garland, a festive flight of steps can take your holiday decorations to new heights—literally. Plus, depending on where your staircase is located, a simple, seasonal sprucing can double as a “wow” factor to your entryway, living room, or elsewhere in your house. To help spark inspiration, read on for our favorite Christmas stairway decor ideas to embrace this season. From maximalist masterpieces to pared-back arrangements, these ideas are so fetching that you’ll be compelled to stop and enjoy the view—yes, even on Christmas morning.

1

Add a Jingle

Janan Assaf Kissler

For a multisensory staircase, consider adding a few bells to the bottom of your garland-lined steps, as Janan Assaf Kissler did here. With any luck, yours will be filled with sweet chimes whenever you or your family members go up or down the stairwell. Music to our ears!

2

Repeat With RIbbons

Sarah Bartholomew

As far as Christmas staircase decor goes, you can never go wrong with ribbons. When Long Island–based designer Sarah Bartholomew dressed up this alluring flight of steps, she peppered the banister with red bows—drawing the eye upward in the process. The result? A setup that proves the only way to go is up.

3

Mix and Match

Pawel Kaminski

Offset a grandiose staircase with a simple strand of garland, which draws the eye upward. “Sticking with timeless, classic decorations is always a smart choice,” explains Rudy Saunders of Dorothy Draper & Company. “A fresh garland going up a stair banister feels traditionally Christmas, but here we added red cardinals dotted up the banister. This is unexpected, yet still authentic.” For a setup that appeals to all of the senses, Saunders recommends incorporating fresh Christmas trees, berries, and magnolia leaves.

4

Wow With Woodsy Touches

Shawna Underwood

A simple sprinkling of pine cones can be exactly what you need to transform your home’s interior into a winter wonderland. “Dress up softly draped faux garland with long velvet ribbon and fresh pine cones for a romantic holiday welcome,” designer Shawna Underwood recommends. Here, the pine cones are placed right next to plush ribbons, giving this flight of stairs a jolt of texture.

5

Style With Stockings

Sara Ligorria-Tramp

Don’t have a mantel on which to hang your stockings? No problem. Emily Henderson lined the stairs to this playroom with a sumptuous set of them. To keep this Christmas staircase aligned with the rest of the decor, Henderson opted for plush, white stockings that offer a warm, cozy feel.

6

Add Some Dimension

Leoma Harper

Calling all maximalists: Here’s your permission to create a statement-making staircase. Leoma Harper of Style the Clutter thought beyond the typical strand of garland and added some fun finishing touches. “When it comes to decorating the banisters for Christmas, I love layering, adding different textures and heights, using festive accents within the foliage to do this,” she shares. “I also have a little trick for the foliage and always start with faux garland as a base, followed by real foliage to pad it out—this creates a really nice full effect with less mess.”

7

Think Pink

Monika Hibbs

Just because red and green is a classic Christmas color palette doesn’t mean it has to be the status quo. Instead, shake things up by adding some pink to the mix, as Monika Hibbs did here. Pink ribbons and lush greenery offer plenty of contrast and create a welcome (and romantic) change of scenery.

8

Let Loose

JANIS NICOLAY

If tightly wound garland feels a tad...well, expected, give your staircase a more unusual take on the classics. Here, designer Gillian Segal gently draped a lush strand over the banister to create some nonchalant drama. And, when it’s paired with the eye-catching pendant, this setup deftly defies gravity.

9

Embrace Snail Mail

Inspired by Charm

Texts and video chats might be a great way to connect, but they don’t do your holiday decor any favors. For a staircase design that’s stylish and sentimental, consider adding Christmas cards with some clothespins. While Michale Wurm Jr. of Inspired by Charm used vintage postcards, you can also recreate this look with freshly delivered cards and letters.

17

Experiment With Greenery

Molly Culver

Sara Malek Barney of Bandd Design skipped the classic Fraser fir or pine and instead chose eucalyptus and wheat stalks for her garland. That, plus small flickers of gold, large, rust-colored feathers, cognac leather ribbon, and other natural elements give these stairs a fresh feel.

23 Great Staircase Decorating Ideas for Christmas

Incredible Christmas Staircase Decorating Idea (Tobi Fairley Interior Design)

In recent posts, we've covered how to decorate your kitchen and dining room for the holidays. Today, guests of the Design Museum will be able to see design options for a place that cannot be called the center of any room, but which looks very impressive if decorated correctly.

Most of us believe that the stairs are exclusively domestic purposes, and therefore not worth attention. But it also anticipates entering the living room or any other room.

And this Christmas, you can be sure that beautifully decorated flights of stairs charge the house with the holiday spirit no less than exquisitely decorated rooms.

A unique staircase decoration will make an impression by being a grand welcome to everyone entering your home at Christmas. Garlands, wreaths, mistletoe, gift socks - all of these can decorate the stairs without much difficulty.

It's only a week until Christmas and we've got 23 inspiring decor ideas to get you started now.

Decoration for the right side of the stairs

First of all, you need to decide on the general style of your home and think about how the decorations of the stairs will be combined with the theme of the festive decor of your home.

It makes no sense to use traditional red and green colors, big garlands and wreaths, if the whole house is decorated in a minimalist style, and yellow and blue tones are predominantly around the stairs.

The idea is to bring the Christmas spirit into the already existing palette and maybe expand it. A modern staircase will look great without the chic garlands.

For a rustic look, you can turn to natural materials such as burlap. If the room is Scandinavian in style, where the walls are a white monochrome surface, then you can think about a few handmade glass decorations that will add color, without compromising the cleanliness and conciseness.

If there are children in the house, they will be happy to hang large figurines of angels, bright stars and giant socks for gifts. Don't limit yourself to simple classic decor in red and green!

Time for Traditions

If you're going to stick with the traditional stairway decorations of green garlands and red decorations, then do it with pomp!

This holiday season's hit is metal décor elements that will easily fit into the overall design of the stairs, also use gold and silver details.

In fact, you can apply the classic approach by replacing the color scheme with golden: it will turn out very majestic and non-trivial. Elegant wreaths and decorations that complement the festive tree near the stairs will give the whole interior a more consistent and charming look.

Stair decoration does not end with the decoration of the railing with wreaths and garlands. Think of a flight or flights of stairs, nooks and crannies underneath, and style them to complete the overall look.

Santa figurines next to the stairs, a playful Christmas tree or beautifully wrapped gifts for the whole family stacked side by side - the choice of decorations is great.

Let's add a light

When decorating the stairs, you can't forget about lighting. This is an important aspect of interior decoration. LED garlands are the most acceptable option that does not require special investments and effort during installation, as well as original Christmas tree decorations.

Make sure that the central lighting does not suppress the brilliance of the string lights. Using gold and silver decorations along with light fixtures will give your home a dreamy and slightly surreal vibe.

Best Staircase Decoration Ideas for New Year and Christmas

If your house has a staircase, then decorating it for the New Year and Christmas is a great idea. In less than an hour, it can be turned into a real New Year's art object that will help create a pre-holiday atmosphere in the house and delight children. Especially if their rooms are on the top floor.

In this article, we have collected bright ideas for decorating the stairs for the New Year, which are definitely worthy to be brought to life in your home. Watch, choose, be inspired and create your own unique decor option.

To create a mood, the Christmas decoration of the stairs does not have to be complicated and pretentious. It is enough that it just be ... New Year's. For example, it can be ordinary bright tinsel, fixed on the railing in waves.

To make the decoration of the stairs even more themed for the New Year, you can simply buy an artificial Christmas tree garland. Such jewelry is now sold, without exaggeration, in every shopping center. Take advantage of the achievements of modern technology and the labor of Chinese workers so that decorating the stair railing for the New Year takes you a minimum of time, and at the same time pleases with the result.

Of course, the more magnificent the garland, the more beautiful the composition, as a rule, will be. But decorating the stairs with tinsel for the New Year is not necessarily a big expense. You can limit yourself to inexpensive garlands. The main thing is that the composition should be rhythmic, without prominent empty spaces.

But, regardless of the type of tinsel and composition, do not forget about the light. LED garlands are now inexpensive and can last a long time on batteries, even without being connected to the mains. And the effect of them is simply amazing.

Christmas decorations for the stair railing, tied in the form of a garland of real spruce branches - this is literally a decor filled with the spirit of the holiday. Not a single artificial garland can be compared with a natural one. And it's not just about the bright coniferous aroma, but also about tactile sensations and a rich and varied texture. But such decoration will cost much more. Therefore, it is considered an attribute of expensive private cottages and hotels.

You will either have to spend a significant amount of money on such a New Year's decoration of the stairs in the house, or allocate a lot of time to make it yourself. But if you decide to do this, you will definitely not be disappointed - a garland of living plants looks luxurious.

And it doesn't have to be spruce branches. You can use juniper brushes or cypress branches to decorate the stairs for the New Year in a country house. Such garlands look neat, modern and exceptionally beautiful. Yes, and it is easier to work with such coniferous plants - it is less likely that when knitting a garland you will cut all your hands.

Pine branches can also be used instead of spruce branches. The garlands of them are more fluffy and the needles do not crumble for a long time.

Or even use plain laurel:

Combined decorations of the stairs for Christmas from several varieties of plants are also good.

For example, a spruce garland can be diluted with red rowan or holly berries:

Or weave tree leaves into it:

Even pheasant feathers, with the right approach, can become a highlight of the New Year's decoration of the stairs, as in the photo:

You can even make a garland from a real assorted plants:

But this requires already confident knowledge of floristry and the ability to create flower arrangements. Therefore, if you are a beginner, then it is optimal to decorate the stairs in the house from no more than two, maximum three varieties of plants. Moreover, one of them, for example, spruce branches, should be the main, background, and the rest should be used for emphasis - berries, cones, flowers.

Not only tinsel, but also other traditional Christmas decorations can be used to decorate the stairs for the New Year with your own hands. And the first candidates for this, of course, are Christmas balls.

Red and yellow Christmas balls are a great choice for green garlands. These are the colors of joy, positive, energy that physically affect people. No wonder Coca-Cola chose fiery red as its corporate color, and McDonald's just the same combination of red and yellow. In addition, in many cultures these colors are associated with wealth and abundance.

Blue and white balls are also a very good way to decorate the stairs for the New Year, especially together with the "snowy" needles. But keep in mind that artificial snow in combination with cool colors will make the interior slightly cool. This decor looks great in a modern-style setting and is more popular with adults. To create a sense of celebration in children, it is better, after all, to use warm colors.

Another very bright and spectacular New Year's decoration of the stairs in a country house can be made from a large number of the most colorful Christmas balls. At the same time, try not to have a cluster of toys of the same color in any area, otherwise an ugly “blot” may turn out. And use different balls not only in color, but also in size and shape. The more diverse they are, the richer the decor will look.

In addition to balls, you can use other Christmas toys to decorate the stairs for the New Year in the house. As with balls, the more varied they are, the better. That being said, don't be afraid to fall into kitsch and make the garland too gaudy - the Christmas holidays, by their very nature, easily forgive this. But at the same time, as for balls, place the decor so that there are no obvious bald spots or color spots.

Ribbons, bows and other fabric decorations are almost a mandatory item of the program if you make your own Christmas decoration for the stairs. The fact is that purchased garlands have special invisible fasteners: hooks, ties, just strings. Homemade decor also needs to be fixed somehow, and here ribbons come to the rescue. Which, moreover, can become another design element of the railing.

In this case, it is better not to rely on a hidden fastening, but on a contrast. Ribbons and bows from them should be large and stand out in color against the background of the garland. You can even make them the main element of the decoration of the garland, if you put the ribbons on it in beautiful waves.

In addition to artificial Christmas decorations, you can also decorate a garland with natural materials that are now fashionable: large cones, fresh or dried citrus fruits. Of the latter, with a certain diligence and experience, you can make beautiful mini-serpentines from the zest.

Decorating the handrail of the stair railing with a New Year's garland is certainly beautiful, but such a solution is often criticized for being unsafe. Indeed, railings are not needed for beauty, they perform a very specific function. The garland does not interfere with the fence of the flight of stairs, but grabbing the handrail, if you stumble, will not work if it is closed with a garland.

This problem is solved in different ways. If the stairs have two railings, then by the New Year only one of them is hung. You can also fix the garland with a wave so that the handrail is almost completely open. Or, instead of a handrail, decorate the balusters of the stairs.

It is very easy to make such a New Year's decoration of the stairs in the house with your own hands - you can not weave anything, just make small bouquets from several branches of a coniferous tree, tie them with a satin ribbon and hang a small bunch of berries or Christmas balls:

In addition, this decor option looks neater and more mature than garlands. It is great for creating a festive atmosphere in a house without small children.

There are even simpler options for decorating stairs for the New Year. For example, you can simply braid the balusters with LED garlands, securing them with a thin cord or even transparent tape. It will take the whole process of decorating the railing in less than an hour, but it will all look fantastic. Especially if the staircase is white or very light - it will almost shine due to the reflected light.

And for lovers of more opulent decor, Christmas wreaths can be hung on the railing.

Another way to decorate a flight of stairs is to place the decor right on the steps. It can be lamps, gifts, various Christmas figurines or compositions in glass jars.

But such decorations are more suitable for outdoor stairs, which can also be decorated for the New Year. They usually have wide steps on which such decor can easily fit. But on the steps in the house, he can interfere.

Installing a Christmas tree near the stairs is not exactly a way to decorate it. It’s just that this place was traditionally chosen, because under the flight of stairs the tree does not bother anyone, even if it is quite large.

In addition, in large mansions, a twisted staircase is one of the main accents of the interior of the hall. Therefore, installing an elegant spruce next to it is quite a logical step. In this case, the rest of the decor of the stairs should be, as it were, a continuation of the spruce decor, and together they should form a single composition.

This technique is very often used by prestigious country clubs, expensive hotels, shopping centers. To the place he will be in a private house. But keep in mind that there should be a convenient approach to the Christmas tree for children, if you do not put a second one in the living room.

Staircase decoration is a great way to fill your home with Christmas atmosphere. For its decor, you can use both inexpensive Christmas tree tinsel and luxurious garlands of real fir branches strewn with Christmas balls and other toys.
