Maybe too challenging on some levels?

The game is cute and the puzzles are different. Sadly I am stuck on one of them and there is no way to get past it. Other than a picture hint there is no other help in solving it. I guess I will have to wait until someone else solves it and see if they share the solution.

Feels like you’re helping… until you get stuck

I spent a fun hour or two playing this Tidy Up game and really enjoyed it. While you’re not actually cleaning anything; you’re introduced (sort of) to a mysterious character and their cluttered (but very cute) home.
Then you click on a section of clutter, play a little puzzle game, and POOF that section is now clean!
When you’re done with the whole room, you find out who you’ve helped, and in turn help yourself. It’s a pleasant little game. Soothing. And weirdly, it really does make me feel like I’m being helpful- and it might even make me want to tidy up a section of my own house.
Ugh - then came the third home, 2nd or 3rd puzzle. It’s supposed to be an upside down L shape and there is seriously no way to solve it. I’ve tried everything.
Now I’m just frustrated and there are no other hints besides a little picture of the finished puzzle.

Sadly, I’m about ready to tidy up my screen by removing this game and waving $4 goodbye.

Just finished all of it!

Unfortunately I can't reply to the person saying they're stuck on a certain puzzle, but I just finished all of them, so I can at least confirm that it's not impossible.

I thought it was really fun! Maybe I'll get the "boyfriend" DLC.

What Does 'Sparking Joy' Mean? Marie Kondo's Method Explained

Marie Kondo has made a name for herself internationally thanks to her famous KonMari method.

For those unfamiliar, the KonMari method is made up of her core principles approaching tidying and decluttering your home. These teachings are featured in her global bestselling books The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up, Spark Joy, and Netflix series Tidying Up with Marie Kondo.

Kondo's latest project Sparking Joy with Marie Kondo is out on Netflix on August 31. This will see her applying these principles to help people who struggle to balance work and home life.

The most elementary of the rules that make up the method is the idea that you must only keep and make space for items that "spark joy."

Newsweek spoke to two KonMari consultants to find out what "sparking joy" means and how you know when you feel it.

What Is 'Sparking Joy'?

In the first episode of 'Tidying Up with Marie Kondo', speaking via her translator, Kondo explains: "The ultimate goal of tidying is really to learn to cherish everything that you have."

When decluttering, Kondo encourages putting all of your items in one place so you are confronted with just how many you have, and then keeping only those that spark joy.

She describes this in the show as feeling like your "cells are rising."

"You feel it when you hold a puppy, or when you wear your favorite outfit," she continues. "It's a warm and positive feeling."

Speaking to Newsweek, KonMari Consultant at Spark Joy London Katrina Hassan explained that it's a unique and personal experience.

"The concept of 'spark joy' is at times, a difficult concept to understand. What sparks joy for one person doesn't necessarily spark joy for another," she said.

"Joy is a very personal feeling. My clients keep items because simply having them and observing them in their home is a source of happiness. They also keep items because of their practicality. Therefore, people have their own joy criteria or 'joy spectrum' when considering all of the items that fill their home."

For some this can manifest as a feeling of peace, comfort, nostalgia or excitement. Often when people working with Hassan experience this feeling they begin to tell her that item's story.

The feeling can be different too depending on the item, according to KonMari Consultant at The Organised Home & Life, Mimi Bogelund.

"The spark you feel when choosing your favorite sweater, dress or coat that you always look and feel your best in, is different from choosing your battered yet totally dependable, much used and loved Le Creuset pot," Bogelund said.

"Something can spark joy because of what it allows you to do – say a laptop that earns you a living, a screwdriver that helps you fix things and so on."

Ignoring practical considerations like how much you paid for something and listening only to your feelings can be difficult for many in the beginning, but as Kondo explains "your sensitivity to joy will be honed through the tidying process."

Hassan called the uncertainty over whether something sparks joy the "tidying wall," and suggested putting these items aside and returning to them later.

You can also try comparing similar items that have sparked joy with those you are unsure about.

In the KonMari method, tidying always begins with clothes. Bogelund agrees that these are a good place start and find what sparks joy for you.

"Don't overthink it and keep in mind there isn't a right or wrong way to learn, just keep on practicing. Think about how something makes you feel. You could also ask yourself further questions to help you before it's instinctive.

"When did you last wear it? Does it fit well and is it comfortable? Can you wear it without giving it a further thought or are you constantly adjusting it? Is it easy to get dressed wearing this? How many do you have of this? Would you buy it again?"

What Do I Do If Something Doesn't Spark Joy?

If an item doesn't spark joy for you, then according to the KonMari method it's time to say goodbye.

When you do this, you must thank or express gratitude to the items you won't be keeping.

If you struggle with decluttering, doing this can help bring some closure.

"It's just a small moment to show gratitude for having enough, for something that has 'given good service', for something that has taught me not to buy on impulse or on sale," Bogelund said.

She recommended having an "exit plan" to make the process as easy as possible and trying to dispose of things sustainably by recycling, donating or selling unwanted items and only discarding as a last resort.

"Plan to get it out of your home on the same day if possible and allocate time on the day to deliver it or have a collection arranged."

About the Author

MARIE KONDO TOKIMEKU SPARK JOY TRANSLATION

When You Hear Aha! The moment you think Oprah Winfrey. Yas, the queen screams Ilana Glazer. So what comes to mind when you think of a spark of joy? It's easy, especially these days: Marie Kondo.

The two-word phrase associated with the garbage disposal guru is said to be the English translation of the Japanese word tokimeku, which Kondo uses in her famous guidebook Jinsei ga Tokimeku Katazuke no Mahō (Life-Changing Cleaning Magic) and also in her new show Netflix Tidying Up. However, contrary to what many of us believe, tokimeku is more than a search for joy, starting from the fact that it is not a literal translation.

But first, here's the necessary context.

This last month has been an explosion of what we call Condo Kraze. Since that fateful day when Netflix released Kondo, the spark of joy quickly rose to the top of the headlines and became the most-spoken phrase in our office. But when one of our commentators mentioned that the phrase "spark of joy" is not the most accurate translation of the word "tokimeku", I wanted to know the whole history of this Japanese word. Could a phrase with such significant decision-making power have such a direct meaning?

Google translator's quick response led me to a surprising discovery - he said that tokimeku, or ときめく, has three definitions: flutter, throb, or heartbeat. I needed to cross-reference to more reliable sources (sorry, Google), so I fled to the New York Public Library for just that. I stumbled across Kenkyushi's Japanese-English Dictionary and skimmed through thousands of paper-thin pages, finally reaching the verb tokimeku, as well as its noun counterpart, tokimeki.

Tokimeku has two definitions:

  1. enjoy [be] in great prosperity; be successful; prosper; prosper; prosper; have one day; to be strong; be influential; be in power.
  2. ripple; heartbeat; pulsate; pulse; beat fast.

The second definition matched what I found earlier, which convinced me that I was on the right track, but I still had no idea where the spark of joy came from. So the only way to find out is to go back to where it originated in Life-Changing Cleaning Magic and ask the professional translator of the book, Cathy Hirano, who essentially brought a spark of joy to life.

Going back to clarifying the Japanese term, Hirano said that tokimeku is another way of saying how your heart beats - for example, when it dances while waiting for something or when you are in love with someone - hence the descriptions of heartbeat, pulsation and pulse. While translating the book, Hirano asked various Japanese speakers what they thought of Kondo's use of tokimeku at home. Although the natives mentioned that they don't usually use the Japanese word in this context, they understood what Kondo meant. And that was enough for Hirano to start experimenting with what the word might mean in English.

With this new sense of freedom, she sat down and wrote down the various possible meanings that have survived to this day:

  • Does this bring you joy?
  • Does this bring you joy?
  • Does it cause joy?
  • Does it cause joy?
  • Do you enjoy it?
  • Do you enjoy it?
  • Do you experience a thrill of pleasure when you touch him?
  • Do you feel a thrill of joy when you touch him?
  • Does it speak to your heart?
  • Will it beautify your world?
  • Does that get you high?
  • Does it make you happy?

According to Hirano, after reading her book, a “spark of joy” really spoke to me, because there is an element of sudden flutter in your heart or a feeling of inspiration if you are expecting something. It was very powerful for me, but I knew I didn't want to use it all the time, because in English, if you use a strong phrase too often, it becomes overwhelming.

If you look at the book Tidying Magic, which will change your life, you will notice that Hirano has chosen to include all of the above examples in her book. However, there was no doubt that this spark of joy left readers, especially when it was chosen as the English title of the book. The second book of Kondo.

Although a spark of joy is not a literal definition, Seigo Nakao, professor emeritus of Japanese studies at the University of Auckland, agrees that the English meaning represents tokimeku in an accurate light. When we buy new things, we feel an overwhelming sense of love and happiness, which is why I think a "spark of joy" accompanies many situations, Nakao said. A Japanese speaker also mentioned that tokimeku means my heart is beating fast and usually refers to being in love, but in a broader sense, it can happen when you see your favorite things around you.

Although tokimeku is understood as when your heart is beating, the situation in which it happens may depend on the person experiencing it. Translator and writer Mari Iida, who translated Clean Up with Kondo, says that it's a personal experience for the individual, and that's what Kondo wants for her clients when they're trying to understand how an object makes them feel.

"I think it's just that it's such a personal experience for you, and I think it's very much about what Mari actually makes you do when you go through her method," Iida said. It's an intangible feeling and it's hard to put into words. I'd like to think that's why Cathy chose the word "joy" to really help us understand what Marie was trying to make us experience.
