Shakira has come a long way from her modest childhood in Colombia. With homes in the Bahamas and Uruguay, the star has built up an impressive portfolio over the years. The Barcelona home she shared with footballer Gerard Piqué before their split in June 2022—and at the centre of allegations of tax fraud against the singer—is now up for sale. More of that later but for now, click or scroll on to retrace Shakira's road to fame and step inside some of the amazing homes she has picked up along the way…

Where does Shakira live?

Following her split from Piqué in 2022 and their subsequent custody agreement, Shakira confirmed she and the couple’s two sons, Milan and Sasha, will move back to Miami, where her entire family are based. Although the singer is currently still in Barcelona, she may choose to move back into her Miami Beach mansion in the coming months. She has several other luxury properties at her disposal around the world, but the star wasn’t born into such palatial surroundings…

Where is Shakira from?

Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born on 2 February 1977, in the small town of Barranquilla, Colombia. With a Lebanese father, William Mebarak Chadid, and a Columbian mother, Nidia Ripoll, the star has nine half-siblings from her dad's previous marriage. When she was just seven years old, Shakira's father's jewellery business went bankrupt and the family were plunged into poverty.

Shakira's childhood

Sony Music Columbia

Shakira showed promise from very early on. At the age of four, the budding star would entertain herself by writing poems, and penned her first song at just eight years old. After signing her first record deal at 13, Shakira released her first album Magia in 1991 and her second, Peligro in 1993. When neither was successful, she decided to take a break from singing to act in the Latin soap opera El Oasis

Shakira resumed her music career in 1995 and released two more albums, Pies descalzos and then ¿Dónde están los ladrones? in 1998. Both included hit singles but the star still wanted to break into the American music industry. In 2001 her fifth album Unplugged won the Grammy Award for Best Latin pop album, but it was her next record Laundry Service that really kick-started her international career. Her first English language album sold more than 13 million copies worldwide. With her career finally setting off, it was time for the songstress to invest in some serious real estate.

In 2000, a year before her hit single 'Whenever, Wherever' hit the charts, Shakira started dating Antonio de la Rúa, the son of the former Argentine president Fernando de la Rúa. The couple often stayed on their sprawling farm in a small fishing village in Uruguay. It is not known when the singer snapped up the property or how much she paid but we do know that in 2008 she holed up there to begin work on a new album.

Set on over 12 acres of land, the home was up for rent until recently, giving us a sneak peek inside. With seven bedrooms, four in the main home and two in the guest house, plus one in a single third building, there's also room for four staff to sleep. The star described the farm as "idyllic and very romantic" in an interview, perfect for inspiring her writing process.

Inside, the main house has a cinema, a work office and a gym. It was also reported that Shakira built a recording studio within the grounds, so she could work on her music. The tiny village has seen several other famous names holidaying in the area, including Rolling Stones guitarist, Ronnie Wood.

Outside, the home boasts a heated pool surrounded by decking, a lake with boats, a sauna and a tennis court, as well as having perimeter surveillance to keep the star safe. The perfect spot for penning an album. Shakira is also a fan of keeping fit and could spend her days swimming and playing tennis at the farm.

Pictured here in December 2009, the couple eventually went their separate ways in August 2010. Having owned several properties together, there was huge disagreement over who owned what. Just after the split, Antonio tried to sue the singer in a $100 million (£82m) lawsuit for what he felt he was owed after acting as her business manager, despite it not being a written agreement.

Shakira's first Florida mansion

As soon as she hit the big time in 2001, Shakira started building her luxury property portfolio. In June of that year, she snapped up this Mediterranean-style estate located in the prestigious gated community on Florida's La Gorce Island for a reported $1.1 million (£900k). Home to big-name stars such as Cher, Matt Damon and Billy Joel, Shakira would have been a wonderful addition to the local celebrity roster of residents.

Spread over 2,700 square feet, it was the perfect home for the star, who would now be spending much more time stateside working on becoming the next huge crossover Latin artist. With stunning detail inside, the arched doorway leads through to the main double-height living space with built-in shelving and a feature staircase leading to the upper floor.

Outside, the garden may be on the smaller side, but boasts a swimming pool surrounded by decking and lush foliage. The super-private home would have been perfect for the popstar but sitting on less than half an acre of land, Shakira was looking for more and decided to sell up in 2005 for $1.8 million (£1.5m), making quite the profit. Although maybe the star should have kept hold of the property as an investment piece—it’s currently estimated to be worth $5.5 million (£4.5m).

In September 2001, not long after her first Miami Beach purchase, Shakira snapped up this stunning home in the same area. Spanning over 8,000 square feet, the prestigious home was bought by the singer for just shy of $3.4 million (£2.8m). A slight upgrade from her first purchase!

Shakira made sure to renovate the mansion over the 12 years that she was based there and reportedly made a number of upgrades including hardwood floors imported from Spain, a new front door, updated landscaping and brand-new lighting systems for inside and out.

In 2013, Shakira decided to put it up for rent at a huge $45,000 (£37k) a month. She then listed it for sale the same year for nearly $13 million (£10m), upping the price in 2015 to $13.9 million (£11.4m) and again in February 2021 to $15.9 million (£13m) but failed to sell. It was just as well though, as it presents a great option for the star and her boys in the coming year.

Fast forward to 2011 and rather than buying another mega-mansion, Shakira made a bold real estate bet on purchasing a share in a private island in the Bahamas. The singer pooled together with Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters and Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz to buy the retreat for a reported $15 million (£12.4m), with plans to build luxury hotels, condos and golf courses, turning it into the ultimate artists' retreat.

Shakira met her ex-partner, Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué, on the set of her Waka Waka video in 2010. In 2015 the couple splashed out a reported $5.9 million (£4.9m) on a mansion in Barcelona. Spread over 1,500 square feet, the home boasts seven bedrooms, two kitchens, a swimming pool with a waterfall, a gym and a whole host of other amenities.

Described as one of the best properties in the city, the house is set over three floors and was renovated by the couple before they had their first child in January 2013. With stunning sea views, the focal point is a large, bright and airy living room, which has featured in many of Shakira’s posts over the years, giving us an insight into the couple’s luxury contemporary style.

In happier days, the family would hang out at the villa making use of the amenities provided, including a games room and a private cinema. It hasn’t been plain sailing for the star, however, who has suffered her fair share of bad luck. In June 2018, the mansion was targeted by burglars. With the couple away, Piqué's parents were sleeping upstairs when the home was raided, with the criminals coming away with expensive watches and jewellery.

The same year Shakira was charged with tax evasion by the Spanish authorities. Accused of failing to pay around $16.4 million (£13.6m) in taxes between 2012 and 2014, the singer had listed her official residence as the Bahamas but spent most of her time in Spain, according to a report by Forbes. Under Spanish law, anyone living in the country for more than six months a year must pay taxes.

The singer has denied any wrongdoing but reportedly paid up when the court found Spain to be her main residence. The singer appealed the ruling, but it was dismissed in May 2022. The case looks set to go on though, as despite Shakira’s legal team continuing to defend her innocence, a Spanish prosecutor is now seeking an eight-year prison sentence and a fine of more than $23.5 million (£19.3m) according to Reuters. So, while there is no official court date yet, a high-stakes trial is likely to take place.

Towards the end of 2019, when Shakira and Gerard Piqué were still a couple, they invested in a new build villa in one of their favourite holiday spots, the island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea. Overlooking the Sea of Akamas, the contemporary villa is near Paphos, on the so-called island of Aphrodite.

Located opposite a brand new five-star hotel, Shakira and her family had been frequent visitors to the island over the years and so it was no surprise when they decided to stump up the cash and buy their own piece of paradise here. As well as a quiet retreat, the new holiday home allowed them to enjoy two kilometres of beachfront, a spa and fine dining options in the swanky restaurants and bars nearby.

With prices starting at $2.3 million (£1.9m), the holiday spot is the largest seafront resort in Cyprus. The palatial spread also features gardens overlooking the sea, with the pool providing stunning sunset views come evening. The question is what will happen to this property—and others owned by the family—now that Shakira and Piqué have split…

Since the couple confirmed their separation in June last year, the pair have reached a custody agreement for their sons, which allows Shakira to relocate with them to Miami, giving Piqué ten days a month with his boys, according to the Daily Mail. Given that the couple were not married, it would be assumed they have equal stakes in their shared properties and should be able to divide their assets in an amicable manner.

Piqué's new love in the house

Relations took a sad turn for the worse recently when footage emerged apparently showing Piqué’s new girlfriend Clara Chia Marti, 23, in the family home in Barcelona almost a year before his split from Shakira. According to the Daily Mail, the PR student appears to be in the background of a Zoom interview Piqué did there with US video live-streaming service, Twitch. The footballer currently lives with Marti in another apartment he owns in the city.

Moving plans stalled

@shakira / Instagram

Meanwhile, plans to sell the Barcelona home where they brought up their sons for a reported approximate $14. 6 million (£12m), may have to be put on hold. According to The Sun, the singer is delaying her move to Miami for five months due to her father’s ill health and his inability to fly. Shakira’s dad suffered a nasty fall last year and she has been supporting him with his recovery as seen here.

Home is where the heart is

@shakira / Instagram

One thing is clear, with Shakira’s immense wealth and a vast collection of homes—and an island—the songstress will have the means to establish a comfortable new life for herself and her boys in Miami, or wherever she chooses when the time is right. We wish her well and look forward to her picking up the trail of her impressive property journey so far…

When Shakira and Gerard Pique split up, the Colombian singer continued to live in their former home and it was the footballer who moved out.

This living arrangement brought with it some problems, though, since the property was next door to that of Pique's parents.

Shakira celebrates her song with a house party

Shakira had planned to move to Miami, but is still in Barcelona for now and was living next door to her ex's parents when she launched her new hit, the 'BZRP Music Sessions #53' in which she criticised Pique throughout the song.

In the days following the track's release, several conflicts between Shakira and her former in-laws, especially Pique's mother Montserrat Bernabeu, have been brought up.

Shakira builds a wall to block off Pique's parents

Now, it seems that the music artist is constructing a wall to properly separate the two properties, as the two houses, despite being independent, are connected in some areas.

TV cameras spotted a cement mixer working in the vicinity of her home, as Shakira is putting up a wall to make the two properties more independent.

Shakira's battles with her in-laws

This follows several other conflicts that have taken place over the past week. One of them involved a black witch mannequin that was placed on the terrace of her home, looking directly at her former in-laws, with Pique's mother reportedly asking for it to be removed.

There is also the fact that Shakira's new song has been playing loudly inside her property, so loud that it can be heard next door.

"I think it is so that the in-laws can hear it", the 'Fiesta' show on the Telecinco said, and that could be the case, since the houses are very close and with the windows open it would be heard without any problems.

Then, a video from 2012 has become viral again, in which Shakira criticises the style advice of Montserrat Bernabeu, Pique's mother, after she suggested Shakira should cut her hair short.

"Mother-in-law, I'm never going to listen to your style advice again!" Shakira stated in that video.

Where singer Shakira and Barcelona defender Gerard Pique live

Singer Shakira and Barcelona defender Gerard Pique have been happy together for more than 10 years. The celebrity couple has two sons. However, despite the strong union, the lovers are in no hurry to officially register their relationship. Fans of a bright performer and a famous football player are often interested in what their housing looks like. It is known that the couple has a mansion in Barcelona and a house in Miami.

The singer and the athlete started dating in 2010. The couple confirmed their stormy romance only a year later. In 2013, Shakira delighted fans with the news of a new addition to the family. The artist gave birth to a son. The couple's second child was born in 2015. The children of Shakira and Gerard were born in the city of Barcelona.

Before the birth of the singer's first child, some publications reported that the brilliant couple had bought a new house for themselves. The decision to buy this property was influenced by its location. The mansion is located near the stadium where the football player trained. Initially, the building had a fairly standard appearance and did not make much of an impression.

The adjacent area is fenced with a high fence, which fits perfectly into the landscape of the area. Thanks to him, the star couple manages to reliably hide their private lives from outsiders.

The celebrity mansion is located on a hill, so from the windows of the house you can admire a wonderful view of the surroundings. Since the original appearance of the building did not suit Shakira and Gerard, they decided to overhaul and rebuild the house.

If earlier the building looked like a medieval fortress, now it looks like a villa in Hollywood.

Near the mansion there is a spacious terrace where orange trees grow.

The building has a spacious living room, library, kitchen, bedrooms, games room. There are also 2 garages on the property. The purchase and arrangement of the house cost the beloved almost 6 million dollars.

The library has a comfortable reading area with a marble-topped table and comfortable chairs. This area is illuminated by 3 pendant lights. In addition to bookcases, there is a piano in the room.

The singer also has a luxurious villa in Miami, where she lived before starting a relationship with a football player. Exotic palm trees and plants grow on the territory of the villa. Near the house there is a large swimming pool with comfortable seating areas.

The area of the villa is approximately 2000 sq.m. The building itself was built in the 1950s. The artist bought this property in 2001 and made some changes to the building. An additional wing was added to the mansion. Specialists from a well-known architectural bureau helped the singer decorate the interior of the villa.

The house has a spacious living room-kitchen, a cinema, 6 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, a games room and a gym with modern fitness equipment. The interior of many rooms is decorated in a minimalist style. The conciseness inherent in this style is diluted with the help of various decor items and art objects.

Living room and kitchen are shared space. Thanks to panoramic windows, a lot of natural light enters the room. The room has several cozy seating areas with soft white sofas. Near the upholstered furniture there are coffee tables with glass tops, which are decorated with orchids.

The dining area has a long table for 10 people. Near the table are chairs with soft backs and seats. A pedestal is installed along the wall, the tabletop of which is decorated with large table lamps. The dining area is illuminated by spotlights.

In the kitchen, an important place is given to a stylish set, the upper cabinets of which are made in white. The facades of the lower cabinets are made of wood. Near the headset there is a table with a glossy surface. One of the sides of the table acts as a bar counter. Near the table are high chairs on metal legs.

This house is currently empty as Shakira enjoys her life in Spain. The actress is building a successful career and is raising children. In her social networks, the singer often shares family photos with fans.

The singer is in a relationship with Gerard Pique and they have two children. The singer has her own villa in Miami and a joint mansion with her husband in his hometown - Barcelona.

House in Barcelona

A loving couple originally purchased a house in Barcelona, where their children were born. The house was chosen in a good location, because the stadium where Gerard Piqué trains is located nearby. It looked like a stone fortress and had a fairly simple appearance. But, Shakira, together with Pique, decided to improve its appearance and interior before moving there.

The outside of the house is finished in pale pink. Orange trees grow on the terrace of the house. On the territory there is a swimming pool and two garages. The house has several bedrooms, a billiard room, and a library. The living room is made in beige and gray shades in a classic style. The bedroom of the spouses is made in white. The cost of the mansion in Barcelona was 5.8 million dollars.

Villa in Miami

Before getting married and moving to live in Spain, the singer lived in her own villa located in Miami. The villa was acquired by Shakira in 2001 and is now selling for $15 million. A villa was purchased for 4 thousand dollars, but the singer did a major overhaul there after the acquisition and before the sale. The house has two floors and it was built in 1950 years.
