Bedroom design 9 sq. m: advice from architects and designers

10/18/2019

4301 View , 0 Comments

Many Russian citizens live in small-sized Khrushchev houses or studio apartments, where there is little space left for a bedroom. If the question arose, how to choose the design of a small bedroom of 9 square meters. m and not overload the room, you need to think about several aspects at once, such as: a set of accessories, the dimensions and functionality of the bed, the style and color scheme of the room. With the right choice of all the elements, you get a comfortable space for rest and sleep.

Visual expansion of space

The first thing to think about is how to make the room visually more spacious. For this, a number of methods are used:

Vertical ornaments allow you to visually increase the height of the room. The monophonic, discreet design of the walls and the bed does not allow the interior to become overloaded. Pillows and bedspreads with assorted patterns, furniture with prints - all this should be discarded. If you want to use a motif, let it be a large print on the entire wall, a light vertical strip or 1-2 decorative pillow covers that can be changed at any time.

For the sake of comfort, you will have to abandon the pretentious atmosphere. In a small space, you need to try to keep minimalism. The less furniture the better. If possible, everything should be made built-in: a wardrobe with sliding compartment doors and up to the ceiling, drawers for linen in the bed frame, space for applying makeup on a wide windowsill. Then it will be possible to move freely around the room, the residents will not have a feeling of claustrophobia.

The best solution for small rooms is a floor-to-ceiling mirror. It is recommended to combine it with a storage system and hang it on the wardrobe doors. If you place it opposite the window, there will be 2 times more light in the room, and the space will visually expand by 1.5 times.

The design of a small bedroom does not have to be boring at all. You just need to refrain from buying motley decor, unnecessary figurines, round furniture that takes up a lot of useful space. Designers consider white or gray walls to be the best design option using contrasting and juicy textiles on the bed. This combination allows you to save a maximum of light, but does not allow the room to become cold.

How to choose and how to install a bed?

The optimal location of the bed is next to the window, but not parallel to the end wall, but perpendicular to it. That is, the headboard does not stick into the window sill, but is leaning against the adjacent wall. The advantages of this position:

The main thing is to follow the safety rules. The bed should not block the flow of hot air from the radiator. It is desirable that a distance of 80 cm be maintained between it and the battery. It is necessary not only for air circulation, but also for free access to the second half of the bed, as well as for washing windows without having to move furniture away.

Bedroom Adagio

The choice of bed should be given special attention. This is the main element in a small bedroom. First, you should choose a sleeping place, and only then, based on its dimensions and configuration, buy cabinets, dressing tables and more. If desired, cabinets and chests of drawers can be taken out into the corridor, changed to narrower and more compact ones, but a bed that is too narrow or uncomfortable will cause more problems.

The length of the bed, even in a small room, should not be less than 200 cm (except for the children's bedroom). The minimum width of a bed per person is 70 cm. Thus, a double bed is from 140 cm. But if the couple who plans to use the bedroom are not two ballet dancers, it is better to take options from 160 cm. As already mentioned, save space due to savings on the dimensions of the bed is not worth it. This will result in poor sleep quality and fatigue during the day.

Here's what you can opt out of:

Since there will be almost no space for clothes and household items in the bedroom after the installation of the bed, you need to think about how to place at least some items in the additional compartments of the bed. Pull-out trays should be discarded: they will be difficult to pull out due to close-fitting dressing and bedside tables. Instead, beds with lifting mechanisms are recommended, under which there are drawers for linen.

Additional storage space is also created by the headboard with shelves. The width of the structure is on average only 30 cm, and you can fit much more into it than two bedside tables on either side of the bed.

Storage tips

Designers and other interior specialists regularly talk about how to properly organize storage systems in a small bedroom. Sometimes they offer non-standard solutions.

So, the architect Nikita Morozov, the creator of the KM STUDIO bureau, recommends using lattices with suspensions, brackets and roof rails. They will turn an ordinary wall, which is often not used for anything other than paintings, into additional space for small things. You can hang clothes, keys, bags on the rails.

Also, experts advise looking for original storage places. If the outlines of the room are non-standard and there is a niche in the wall, you should use it for books, clothes or bed linen. When installing the screen on a radiator, you should look for models with side shelves. Even in some designs of flower pots, there may be a shelf for small things.

If possible, all cabinets should be made built-in. A good example is a TV wall with plain doors without handles. She has no open shelves, all wall elements are disguised as the color of the walls, and at first you might even think that the TV is simply built into a niche.

Is there a balcony from the bedroom? This is a great opportunity to organize a storage system. In a poorly insulated room, clothes will be stored without harm to the fabric, shoes can also be placed there. But it is best to insulate the balcony and use it not only for storage, but also for organizing an additional workplace or recreation point.

Convertible room

A small bedroom is often arranged in a small apartment. Rooms 9-10 sq. m are found in Khrushchev, the total area of which is 44-50 square meters. m. This space often needs to be equipped not for one owner, but for a married couple or even a family with children. Why waste space and use an entire room for only one function - sleep?

If there are many tenants in the apartment, it is recommended to make a transforming bedroom. At night, it will have a full-fledged sleeping place for one or two, if desired (if we talk about a nursery), even three, and during the day - space for study, work, home fitness.

To make the room more functional, you will have to abandon the standard double bed. Replacement options:
