Tips for adding instant curb appeal to freshen up your front entry area. From plants to fabulous front porch decor, these awesome DIY ideas will make your home’s first impression the best impression!
Spring is in the air and as you set foot outside the house, you realized that your front porch is still in winter hangover mode. It’s time to get around to those small maintenance projects in order to make this additional “square footage” livable. Seasonal projects like staining the deck, organizing the garage, or power washing the exterior all enhance curb appeal.
A small front porch doesn’t mean you have to skimp on style though. I have gathered all of our favorite ways to freshen up a small front porch decor and enhance function with clever accessories, DIY upcycled items, plants, and other simple design ideas.
Here are some of our favorite small front porch decor ideas that show off your personal style!
1. Paint the Front Door A New Color
Choosing a new hue is fun whether choosing paint colors for your home or choosing paint color for your front door.
The most popular door paint colors:
- Black
- Dark Grey
- Dark Blue or Navy
- Pastels (Aqua, Yellow, Pale Pink)
- Warm Natural Stain
Looking for something more dazzling? Choose a door color that is opposite your house’s main shade on the color wheel.
Pro Tip: Paint colors often look much lighter or brighter/bolder outdoors than the sample on a paint card appears. Try a sample swatch and be prepared to go darker than your original choice.
2. Add a Fun Wreath
A new wreath is the most cost effective and space savvy way to decorate your front porch. Craft a custom hoop wreath for less than $35, even if you don’t think of yourself as crafty.
Searching for something a bit more elaborate? There are gorgeous, preassembled options right at your fingertips.

Design Tip: A 24-inch wreath is just the right size for a standard 36-inch wide front door. Hang it about 14 inches from the top of the door so that it’s centered.
3. Hanging Baskets
Source: The Painted ChandelierHang flower baskets to maximize square footage. Bringing plants up to eye level makes an instant impression and is an efficient use of space. One of my favorite ways to use a hanging basket is on a mailbox. It’s a super easy and fast way to brighten up a lowly mailbox.
4. Window Boxes
Source: Pretty Handy GirlEnjoy the sight of flowering blooms peeking through your windows inside with window boxes. Or plant herbs, hanging vines, or seasonal annuals. You can find the plans for these adorable window boxes from Pretty Handy Girl. Whether you choose a simple DIY palette design or something more elaborate, this architectural detail will enhance any structure.
5. Personalized House Numbers
Source: EtsyPersonalized house numbers add stylish charm to your front porch. Choose a color that has enough contrast with your home or mailbox to maximize visibility.
6. A Welcome Sign
Give your small porch decor a cozy but uncluttered vibe by focusing with just a few accessories. Choose one or two items that reflect your esthetic and build from there. Craft a DIY welcome sign to warmly greet visitors.
Feeling daunted by design tasks? If you’re wondering where to begin break the porch into imaginary zones. Use the front door as your centerpiece.
7. Hanging Wall
Don’t neglect your vertical space! A plant/herb wall like this pallet hanging wall from Jenna Burger Design is suitable for almost any size abode and works especially well for a small front porch. Repurpose a pallet or old fence gate for a creative DIY take, or purchase flush planters crafted specifically for the purpose.
8. Unexpected Finds Small Porch Decor Ideas
Source: The Honeycomb HomeThere’s no rule against showing off your favorite thrift hauls or affinity for antiques from the safety of your front porch, as long as it is well covered.
Use an old buffet as an outdoor serving station or as a handy place to stash package deliveries. Flank your door with a set of antique urns. A vintage sign or mirror make great conversation pieces. My friend, Roxanne, is flawless with her vintage porch decorating like using an old milk jug as a side table.
9. Play up Architectural Features
Source: Pottery BarnSome houses are blessed with columns, archways, or balanced steps that create height and symmetry to draw the eye. If, like me, you don’t have beautiful columns or a natural framework for your front porch, it’s easy to achieve the appearance with planters, window boxes, or shutters to add height.
Design tip: Highlight special features such as corbels, stonework and stucco with shades of white. Contrasting colors will especially make them pop.
10. Add a Unique Doormat
Rugs bring warmth and texture to a porch. Whether you have brick, tile, or concrete slab flooring, the right rug can anchor the space and pull your décor together.
Since our front door isn’t covered, I purchased a mat tailored specifically for outdoor use. I found this great neutral one for $16! I then layered an outdoor rug to better fit the scale of the door.

11. Curtains
Source: Saw Nails and PaintSaw Nails and Paint created a stunning summer seating area above with soothing colors natural textures. I especially love the outdoor curtain that provides privacy and a bit of protection. You can purchase outdoor curtains in a variety of fabrics and patterns.
12. Elevate your Outdoor Lighting
Cage LanternsModern lighting solutions are so fun and one of my favorite front porch decor ideas. Your front porch and entryway are quite similar in function and size. So, it only makes sense to draw inspiration for your porch light scheme from entryway lighting ideas.
Not all lighting choices have to be practical! A combination of lanterns, battery-operated candles, and votives placed strategically creates a warm welcome. Don’t leave your garden or walkway area in the dark either. Spotlights, spike lights and floodlights help to illuminate your landscaping feats.
13. Stencil the Floor
Source: BrePurposedTransform a bland cement porch into a visually dazzling work of art like BrePurposed did here. Stencil patterns are the perfect way to achieve the look of tile at a fraction of the cost. With an array of designs available for purchase, your porch makeover will be far from cookie cutter.
14. Rustic or Cottage Vibe
Source: Nearly NaturalAvoid getting lost in the details and overwhelming the porch with accessories. Streamline your focus and simplify your decor by choosing a theme. For a rustic aesthetic, think cozy blankets, stacked logs, a natural jute rug, and perhaps this fun wooden moose head or a set of antlers.
15. Small Porch Swing
Source: Mostly Lovely ThingsThis lovely modern porch swing from Mostly Lovely Things is ideal for small spaces! Front porches and swings go hand in hand. There are many modern styles and sizes available for retail, including single seat hammock style swings for tight spaces.
Fun fact: Placing outdoor furniture in a space has a psychologically welcoming affect. Whether your space is large enough for an outdoor farmhouse table, or only big enough for a swing, adding seating is guaranteed to make guests feel at home.
16. Colorful Greenery
The front porch is an outdoor space. Featuring fresh flowers and potted plants is a no brainer. Lush greenery enhances any area.
Easy Perennials for beginners:
- Ferns (annual in some areas)
- Hostas
- Succulents
- Bulbs like Irises, Tulips and Lilies
- Hydrangeas
- Boxwood
Pro Tip: I purchased self-watering planters a few years ago, and I love them. They are virtually maintenance free. Our concrete planters are a fun DIY to create custom planters without the hefty price tag.
17. Add a Pop of Color
Source: Daffodil Lane WreathBudget friendly ways to add color:
- Paint your house numbers or doorbell. Break the rules a little.
- A bold front porch rug.
- Spruce up flea market finds with an eye-pleasing color paint palette.
- Outdoor throw pillows are an affordable way to play with color year-round on the porch.
- Draw inspiration from your plants. If you want your accent colors to pop, play off what’s blooming in your garden.
18. Refresh your Walkway
A little maintenance can go a long way to freshening up a space. We pressure wash our concrete every-other-year. If your walkway area needs a bit more love than that, repair and paint the concrete walkway. We also built this super budget friendly walkway for my parents.

Small hallway - how to make it visually bigger? Tips for visual expansion
A small hallway is a problem for many apartments in Russia. In the article we will tell you how to equip this space functionally and at the same time stylishly. Read on for tips on how to make a small hallway look bigger. All the "chips" - from finishing materials and furniture to decorative elements.

Types of small hallways
Small hallways can be divided into two groups:
- Small but square
- Small yet narrow.
small hallway layout
Most of the tips in the article are universal and suitable for any hallway, but some will differ depending on the layout of the apartment.
It is more difficult to correctly organize the space in a small narrow hallway. It is necessary not only to visually expand the room, but also to equalize the proportions, to make the hallway more square.
There are several ways to expand the space in the hallway. Methods differ in terms of labor costs. Choose those for which you now have time and resources.
1. Finishing materials - relevant for those who have started a major renovation or are just planning an arrangement in a new apartment.
2. Furniture - suitable for those who are ready to change the headset in whole or in part.
3. Decor - minimum costs.
So, we have a task - to make a small hallway stylish and practical at the same time.
Finishing materials
1.
Monotone and minimalismIn a small room, you should not make bright walls and lay multi-colored tiles with patterns. Choose light colors for walls and floors - white, beige, gray. Light materials do not "steal" visual space, as it happens with dark finishes.
Refuse wallpaper with small patterns and stripes. On the one hand, vertical elements make the room taller, but solid striped wallpaper in small hallways does not work in your favor. The room becomes visually "cluttered".
If you don’t like white walls “without everything”, then it’s better to add bright details through the decor.
Don't forget the front door too. Match the front door to the color of the walls - white or beige. For a fresher look, choose a door with sophisticated modern textures. For example, with a concrete look finish.

2.
Lay the floor "across"This advice is relevant for narrow hallways. Lay laminate, parquet, or long tile across the long hallway. This simple technique will visually smooth out the imbalances of the room and make it more square.
Coating across walls and coating along
3. Vertical elements
Yes, we said that vertical striped wallpaper is a bad idea. However, you can add some vertical elements in order to stretch a small room towards the ceiling. This technique works best in small square hallways.
One of the popular and successful options is wooden slats on the walls.

Furniture in a small hallway
The hallway must be functional. We advise you to give preference to the practical component when arranging. The hallway "as in the picture" is, of course, stylish. But it is much more important to provide storage space for clothes and shoes.
Hallway furniture checklist:
1. Wardrobe for outerwear
2. Open hanger
3. Shoe box for storing shoes
4. Pouf or bench
5. Full length mirror
But what if the hallway is very small and it is simply impossible to fit all the furniture? There is only one answer - prioritize and choose wisely.
Small Hallway Furniture Tips:
1. Storage system in a small hallway
In such a system, there is immediately a place for shoes, and hangers, and shelves for things, and a pouffe.

2. Built-in wardrobe
Install a built-in wardrobe with mirrored panels. So you immediately solve the problem with the mirror, which does not need a separate place and with the storage of all things.

3.
Life hackFor a square hallway, choose cabinets and storage systems that are small in length, but deep. For a narrow one, on the contrary, a long, shallow cabinet.

4. Instead of a floor hanger - hooks
A bulky floor hanger or chest of drawers will “eat up” the space, which we already have little. Choose open storage systems that mount to the wall.

5. Use corners
In a small space, it is important to use every centimeter to good use. But often our corners “disappear”, they only accumulate dust. In a small hallway, a corner cabinet is especially appropriate. Yes, visually the space will no longer be so “free and clean”, but how many things can fit.

6. Cabinet with slatted doors
Is it possible to buy a wardrobe with mirrors? Choose cabinets with slatted fronts that don't make the space "blind". It's also a more budget-friendly option.
Rack cabinet in the hallway
7. Pouf or bench
The same principle as with cabinets. For narrow hallways - a narrow long bench against the wall, for a square one - not an elongated pouffe. Choose a functional bench and ottoman - opening, with shelves and drawers. So you can solve the problem with a separate shoe rack.

8. Interior doors
For a small hallway, several design options for doorways are suitable:
- Without internal door - arch or slopes along the perimeter
- Doors with glass inserts - more "air" in the room
- Sliding doors - do not steal space to open. Minus - rather big price
- Interior doors that match the front door - this way the space looks more organized and organic.

Mirrors and lighting
All interior details and light should work towards one goal - to make the space stylish and visually expand it. Our main assistants here: mirrors and lamps.
Do not overload a small hallway with a bunch of decor - figurines, candles, massive frames and paintings. All this can be implemented in the bedroom, living room, kitchen. In a small space, we try to make the space as clean as possible.
1. Full-length mirror
For the hallway, this is necessary - we want to see ourselves before going out into the street.
Options for placing a mirror in a small hallway:
- On the wall - but often there is no room for it
- On the cabinet - a great option
- On the front door - ideal for small hallways, where even a closet will not fit. A mirror on the front door both expands the space and adds air, and is ideal for looking at yourself just before exiting through the same door.
A small entrance hall with an open storage system on the wall, a bench and a mirror in the door is a complete and practical option.

Each series of our doors has an option of an internal panel with a mirror - from the most budgetary to premium doors.
2. Mirrors or mirrored wall stickers
A decor element that diversifies the plain interior of the hallway will add light and space.

3. Lighting
Light rooms look more spacious, so it is important to correctly set the light. You should not hang one small light bulb, thinking "it's still 2 meters here, that's enough." Our goal is to fill the space with air.
Main lighting
Do not hang one large chandelier, especially a long one. She "eats" the height of the room and reduces the space. Choose a few ceiling lights that are nearly flat and don't protrude from the surface.
Several sources of ceiling lighting in the hallway. Entrance door Ultimatum.
Additional light sources
Overloading the walls with lamps is not a good idea. They already have mirror stickers, storage systems, small paintings.
Buy an LED strip and fasten mirrors, shelves, paintings around the perimeter. It looks unusual and adds light without taking up space. You can install such tapes simply on free sections of the wall.

Putting thoughts together
The main advice was learned, the rules were sorted out. Now is the time to put them into practice. First of all, focus on the layout of your hallway and financial capabilities.
In the meantime, we will briefly list the main thing:
1. Between beauty and practicality, we choose the second. Living in a picture from Pinterest is not very convenient.
2. Floors and walls are plain and harmonize with each other. No small drawings on the wallpaper and flashy patterns on the tiles. We add variety with decor and, for example, an interesting texture of the front door.
3. In a narrow hallway we put the laminate across - we align the proportions
4. We try to fit all the necessary furniture - a wardrobe, a hanger, a shoe rack, a bench, a mirror. Doesn't fit separately? We mix a bench with a shoe rack, a mirror with an entrance door, hangers with shelves and drawers.
5. Remember the rule - for a narrow hallway, long and shallow furniture, for a square one - short and deep. We use corners - corner poufs, hangers, cabinets.
6. We put doors with mirrors, sliding or combined with the front door. Or even leave the opening without a door. It all depends on the layout. We do not recommend leaving a bathroom without a door.
7. We visually expand the space with mirrors and lighting: decor with a mirror and a full-length mirror, ceiling lights and diode strips. Nothing bulky or bulky.
That's all. Successful interior solutions and easy repairs!

Ideas for a small hallway: How to equip a small hallway in an apartment, photos, design ideas and solutions
Let's be realistic. To think that in our climate you can do without a specially organized hallway in an apartment is a utopian idea. If the hallway is very small or simply does not exist, and the front door opens directly into the living room or into the kitchen or bathroom, it is necessary to allocate and equip a place where you can remove, hang, put, put . ..
Even a small entrance hall in an apartment is a room of strategic importance. The cleanliness of the apartment and the duration of our preparations before going outside depend on its layout. And it is in the hallway that our house begins, here the guests get the first impression of it. How to equip a small hallway and make this patch overloaded with things comfortable, neat and pleasant in every way? We offer design ideas for a small hallway.
INT2architecture
Determine the minimum necessary for yourself
The only way to keep order in a small hallway in an apartment is to find comfortable places for at least the basic types of things.
Regardless of the layout and area at the entrance to the apartment, it is desirable to place:
• a hanger for outerwear, where at the same time it will be possible to attach two or three things of each family member;
• a corner where you can leave dirty wet shoes;
• shelf, box or basket for storing scarves, hats, gloves;
• hooks or a shelf for keys and other small items;
• pouffe, armchair or bench, where it is convenient to put on or take off shoes. Ideally, you should also have a table or console for packages and bags, because they rarely come into the house empty-handed. But if there is catastrophically little space, things will have to be put on a pouf or hung on a hook (provide it at the entrance).

In the photo: in some houses it is possible to leave dirty shoes in the vestibule in front of the apartment. There is also sometimes enough space for a banquette. Minus an item from the hallway necessary for furnishing.
Mark the boundaries
Coarse-bristle rubber-backed door carpet is an indispensable item in the interior of the hallway, especially in the autumn-winter period.
There is a similar rug in the hallway of almost every apartment, but most often it is too small. A guest comes in and stands rooted to the spot - afraid to stain the floor. To make it more convenient for both visitors and household members, lay a larger carpet in the hallway so that it is enough for three or four steps.
ARTTIM PRO
The idea from the photo: the first impulse is to unfold the rug along the door, as they publish on advertising photos in catalogs. But it is more correct and more practical to deploy it “across”, as shown in the photo.
In apartments where there is no entrance hall, the rug is doubly needed. Not only to retain dirt and moisture, but also to mark the boundaries of the entrance area. A good solution for a small hallway is to lay two carpets: a mat that separates the hallway from the studio, and a beautiful rubberized rug on top (as in the photo).

Wardrobe - also a surface
Many people think that a large closed wardrobe in which you can hide all things is a real salvation from the mess in a small hallway, and lament if there is not enough space for it. Meanwhile, this is far from an ideal option for small-sized rooms: you can’t hang wet clothes in such a closet, which means you need another hanger. And immediately the question is - where to find a wall for her?
von Moltke Innenarchitekten
In the photo: the same closet, closed, looks like a “wall”. The door rolls back and half blocks the passage (this is enough to get the right thing). Better than not having a closet at all

Tip: "Take" a seat near the room
Sometimes even a narrow wardrobe does not fit in a tiny standard hallway. What to do?
Check whether the main partition between the hallway and the room? If we are talking about a non-capital structure, the way out can be the “deepening” of the cabinet into the room: at the same time, its facades swing open into the hallway (example in the photo), but the cabinet does not take up space in it.
Architekturfotografie Bach
The idea from the photo: cabinets recessed into the next room (or niche) can be opened by pressing and move out like a pharmacy section. Access to content is from the side. The advantage of this solution is that the cabinet can be deepened by a meter and a half, but made narrow.
Olga Saakyan
A common idea for a small hallway is a small monolithic design that combines open and closed sections. This solution uses all the space from floor to ceiling for storage, which is a huge plus in a small hallway.
Many “ready-made” hallways have seating. True, if down jackets and jackets of all family members gather on a hanger, there may simply not be a place to sit. Here you can only put a heavy bag, which, however, also does not hurt.
Labodina Valentina
If even a monolithic hallway looks too bulky, think over the design of the storage system yourself and assemble it from shoe stands, hooks and shelves that are convenient for you.
Photo idea: An alternative to a factory hanger is a tiled wall.
Andrey Volkov
In apartments where there is no entrance hall, and you immediately find yourself in the living room, the entrance area is still marked with a hanger (example in the photo). True, she is unlikely to cope with the full load alone. Surely additional "capacity" will be required: a few hooks on the wall, a small wardrobe-column and other ideas for a small hallway.
NF interiors
For shoes
Boots and boots in which we come from the street are so dirty that you can't hide them in a shoe cabinet or in a closet. So they remain standing on the mat. If a large family lives in the apartment, the floor at the door to the hallway is often filled with shoes of various sizes. And this only adds fuel to the fire - the entrance hall of the apartment seems even smaller and cluttered.
Fighting the natural course of things is useless, but we can fix the situation and we know how to equip a small hallway. Clusters of "leaky" shoes will look tidier if they are placed in trays with low sides (they come in a variety of sizes and shapes). By the way, washing such pallets is not difficult at all. And so that the shoes do not stand in a dirty puddle, we offer a non-standard solution - fill the tray with pebbles brought from the sea.
PLANT Architect Inc.
Another hallway design option is to introduce multi-tiered shoe racks, perhaps they will take root in your apartment.
Innenausbau Binder GmbH
For accessories
Scarves, hats, gloves, mittens, umbrellas and other accessories take up much more space than we think, and terribly litter the scarce space. You need to find a convenient way to store them in a small hallway - do not go to the dressing room or bedroom for a hat. Hanging pockets, an extra row of hooks, special hangers for scarves - look for a convenient option for how to equip the hallway.
Ahre Fastighetsbyrå
By the way: Having a personalized accessory basket for each member of the family can help narrow down the search for what you need at some point.
CasaRosa
If you are planning to furnish a small entryway, make sure to provide space for bags. In addition to the door handle, which is always occupied by some kind of burden, you can make additional hooks.
Furnished by Anna
Seats
Some believe that a small hallway does not need seating. But it is this "excess" that can improve the design and make the interior of the entrance area truly comfortable.
If you want to kill two birds with one stone, choose seats that are comfortable to store various things inside. In the design of a small hallway, you can use ottomans with a hinged lid, good old chests and benches - it is convenient to put shoes under them.
Jessica De Kler
Small items
If there are no suitable surfaces in the hallway, hang at least a narrow shelf that takes up minimal space. Otherwise, keys, receipts, discount coupons will remain in bags, pockets and constantly get lost.
Maya Baklan
Unloading
While the owners of spacious hallways may well inspect once a season, the owners of mini-versions are forced to revise the contents of the hangers much more often, as they fill up. Try to leave on the hanger only those things that you wear every day, put the rest in the dressing room, closet or on the mezzanine.
If you are expecting guests, empty the hanger of your belongings as much as possible. In our apartment, in such cases, the “hallway branch” on the balcony begins to work.
