Small kitchen with backsplash

6 Stunning Small Kitchen Backsplash Ideas for a Spacious Look

In This Article

Small kitchens are common in Indian homes today and most of us can only dream of having a large space for whipping up meals. One of the ways you can make your kitchen look bigger is by installing a great backsplash. They serve the dual purposes of aesthetics and functionality. Check out our small kitchen backsplash ideas and get inspired!

Small Kitchen Backsplash #1: Glossy GrandeurTrendy and fun backsplash to make the kitchen look bigger

Glass panelling is an easy and foolproof method for creating the illusion of space. A glass panel as a backsplash for kitchen will make your space look bigger by reflecting plenty of light. This idea works well for both light or dark colours.

You can also amplify the effect by adding task lighting under the upper cabinets. This way your small kitchen backsplash adds sheen to your kitchen at night or gloomy days!

Shiny tiles add a touch of pizazz to this kitchen. You can also choose to use this for only a part of your backsplash if you feel it would look overwhelming.

Kitchen Backsplash #2: Elegant StriationsUse a striated backsplash to make the kitchen look bigger

Slim-cut tiles packed together in this small kitchen backsplash play up the length of this parallel kitchen. You can even choose bigger or smaller tile cuts — the idea is to trick the eye into making the kitchen feel longer than it is.

Backsplash Ideas for Small Kitchen #3: Neutral NuancesNeutrals ensure the best backsplash for small kitchen

If you are looking for kitchen backsplash ideas, go with neutrals. A neutral backsplash of a single colour is a pleasant addition for small kitchens. It takes the attention away from cramped or dingy spaces and gives the space a sophisticated effect.

However, make sure you choose easy-to-clean materials like quartz, Corian, ceramic or granite when using neutral colours.

Backsplash Ideas #4: Spillover StyleKitchen backsplash ideas that ensure continuity make the space look big

Most of the time, we restrict the backsplash to behind the hob and the preparation areas. If you want the best backsplash for small kitchen, extend the design beyond the cooking and prep areas. In the above space, the mosaic-tiled backsplash extends to the walls and makes its way to either side of the door. This gives the space continuity and makes the small kitchen appear large.

White is the perfect colour for a small kitchen

This backsplash is of the same colour as the dominant off-white hue in the rest of the space. This way the space looks roomy as ever!

Backsplash Ideas #5: Pretty PatternsUse quirky patterns for your backsplash

Patterns immediately enhance the decor of any space and the kitchen is no exception. Bold, tiled patterns work the best in open kitchens; they help delineate the kitchen without compromising on space.

Here, large patterns created with multiple tiles have a hypnotic effect in this small kitchen.

Backsplash Ideas #6: Breezy and AiryWe love this vibrant blue backsplash

Another way by which you can make your space look bigger is by installing a window and having it surrounded by a simple but smart backsplash. Not only does this look good, but the view in itself also gives depth to the small space. However, ensure that the window is not positioned in front of or opposite the hob.

Choose one of these backsplash ideas and make your comfy and compact space the cynosure of all eyes!

Best Kitchen Backsplash Ideas 2022

Designing a kitchen requires many decisions to be made, but one of the most fun is selecting the backsplash. In fact, this kitchen element—which covers a portion of or all of kitchen walls—is ripe for adding personality to the design to coordinate with cabinetry, lighting, appliances, and hardware.

Whether you envision a white kitchen, blue kitchen, or kitchen with other colors, you have many kitchen backsplash ideas to choose from. The most classic is traditional tile—like a subway design in larger or slender shapes—that covers the space between the countertops and upper cabinets. With more kitchens featuring open shelves or even no upper storage, many designers, including Waterworks cofounder and author Barbara Sallick, are getting more innovative with "tile envelopes" where the backsplash tile covers the entire wall surface, while others are even using wallpaper as a backsplash material.

Whether you have a small kitchen or a large one, a modern kitchen, or a cottage-style one, we've got over 30 kitchen backsplash ideas to inspire the material and design for your project. Whatever you select, it's sure to make your kitchen dazzle with style. Here, our favorite designer-inspired kitchen backsplash ideas for 2022.

1

Belgium Blue Stone Tiles

Annie Schlechter

Belgium Blue Stone tiles by Country Floors make a statement under a rustic wooden beam in this Michigan lake house designed by Amy Meier. The kitchen cabinets are bandsawn knotty white oak—“the knottier the better,” as Meier said— and the kitchen island is painted Salamander by Benjamin Moore, bookended by displays of splatterware and copperware sourced from all across Michigan. The stools are by Bicyclette.

2

Checkerboard Tile

ANNIE SCHLECHTER

At this Bronxville, New York, home designed by Carrier and Company, the kitchen’s chic checkerboard backsplash, fashioned out of glazed terra-cotta tile (Ann Sacks), energizes the space. Perimeter countertops, Caesarstone. Sink fixtures, Waterworks

3

Arched Windows

MALI AZIMA

For an airy twist on the backsplash, designer Melanie Turner and architect Yong Pak placed the range in this Atlanta home in front of windows with a graceful arch that echo the tiled arcs in the barrel-vaulted ceiling. Encaustic cement tiles (Mosaic House) infuse the kitchen with the spirit of a French bistro.

4

Hand-painted Wallpaper

THOMAS LOOF

Talk about bringing the outside in: At this Naples, Florida, home, designer Summer Thornton clad the kitchen backsplash with a hand-painted tropical wallpaper (de Gournay). To protect the wallpaper backsplash, Thornton covered it with a thin glass pane. The range is Lacanche; the leather stool upholstery is Moore & Giles.

5

Lively Pattern

Joshua McHugh

For a small dose of pattern, designer Philip Gorrivan clad the backsplash of this Connecticut colonial with colorful Moroccan tile (Exquisite Surfaces), a graphic contrast to the kitchen's rustic maple butcher block and honed granite counters.

6

Subway to the Ceiling

Thomas Loof

In the kitchen of this Connecticut home designed by Ashley Whittaker, a subway tile backsplash extends to the ceiling on the wall behind the range. A duo of disarming patterns (checkerboard flooring and a geo-floral seating fabric by Raoul) enlivens warm shades of white in counters, cabinetry, and subway tile. Counter stools, Palecek. Range, Viking. Pendant lighting, Charles Edwards

7

Black and White Chevron Tile

DOUGLAS FRIEDMAN

At his home in San Antonio, designer Todd Romano proves small kitchens are ideal for punchy pattern. Custom Talavera tiles are arranged in a graphic chevron pattern with glossy ebony cabinetry (Black, Fine Paints of Europe).

8

Mosaic Wainscoting

Zach & Buj

9

Glazed Moroccan Tile

Douglas Friedman

At this Dallas home designed by Meredith McBrearty, glazed Moroccan tile (Clé tile) infuse the modern kitchen with hand-crafted texture. Blown-glass pendants by MoMA alum Alison Berger turn over-island lighting into modern art while quilted leather stools (Studio Piet Boon) and leathered quartzite counters add warmth. Range, Wolf.

10

Rustic Painted Tile

Thomas Loof

At this Windsor, Florida, cottage, designer Alessandra Branca packed a powerful style punch with the blue-and-white Casa Branca tile backsplash, which stands in colorful contrast to a sleek, lacquered SieMatic island. The Palecek stools are covered in a Kravet fabric with Samuel & Sons trim. Fittings, Kohler. Pendants, Circa Lighting

11

Extra-Large Subway Tile

William Abranowicz

For her kitchen bar in Connecticut, Waterworks cofounder and author of The Perfect Kitchen Barbara Sallick clad the walls with 4-by-8-inch subway tiles, which she took all the way up to the ceiling. "I love the grid they create, I love the materials, and I love the scale of the larger-size tile," Sallick says.

12

Painted Mirror

Stephen Karlisch

At the 2020 Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas, designer Chad Dorsey wowed his stunning kitchen design that centered on a dramatic backsplash made of a Chinoiserie-painted antique mirror by artist James Mobley on Industry Glass. The painted glass is inset into a Cambria stone-clad cased opening.

13

Glossy Squares

Max Kim-Bee

This Nashville, Tennessee, kitchen designed by Richard Hallberg features a backsplash "wall" made of square Belgian tile with a hig-gloss glaze that extends up to the ceiling. Cabinetry paint color, Egret by Sherwin-Williams

15

Handmade Abstract Waves

Austin, Texas-based designer Mark Cravotta has predicted the resurgence of craftsmanship in kitchen design in 2021, and we couldn't be more excited about that. Backsplashes are ideal places to showcase craftsmanship and artisanry, as these handmade tiles illustrate.

Kitchen apron for a small kitchen

Kitchen apron is an important interior element in any kitchen. It performs two functions at once - practical and decorative. In terms of practicality, a kitchen apron in the kitchen protects the wall between the work surface and hanging cabinets from splashes of grease, dirt, moisture and soot. And with decorative - plays an important role in the design of the kitchen. After all, it can be made as an almost imperceptible detail, as well as a highlight of the entire interior that attracts attention.

When choosing an apron for a small kitchen, there are some nuances to consider, which we will discuss below. But, in general, there is not much difference whether you choose an apron for a large or small kitchen. And here and there the same materials are used, you only need to pay attention to the texture, pattern and color of the apron.

Kitchen apron can be made from different materials, but the most popular are ceramic tiles and tempered glass. Let's talk about these and other materials, and discuss the pros and cons of each of them.

Ceramic tile

Ceramic tile backsplash is one of the most popular and affordable options. The price of ceramic tiles ranges from very budgetary to very high, so everyone can choose an option for their pocket. A variety of shapes, colors and textures can satisfy almost everyone.

When choosing a ceramic tile for a backsplash, you should pay attention to its texture. From the point of view of practicality, it is best to choose a smooth tile without relief, with a matte surface. The slightest splashes and stains will be visible on glossy tiles, so it will be very tiring to care for such tiles. The same applies to tiles that are too embossed - it will be difficult to keep it clean.

When choosing ceramic tiles for a backsplash in a small kitchen, you should avoid large patterns, voluminous relief, and dark tones. Give preference to light tiles with a laconic design and a matte surface.

Advantages of ceramic tiles:

Cons:

Mirror tiles

Mirror tiles are a beautiful, effective, but very impractical solution. In terms of design, this is a great solution for a small kitchen. The mirror surface visually expands the space, which is very important for a small kitchen. Such a kitchen apron looks beautiful and unusual. But the impracticality of such a solution eliminates its advantages. The slightest spots and splashes will be visible on the mirror surface, so you will have to take care of such an apron every day.

Choose a mirrored apron if you rarely use the kitchen and cook little.

Glass

In recent years, tempered glass backsplash (skinali) has become very popular. And this is not surprising, since glass apron has a number of advantages over other materials. The main one is, perhaps, the ability to apply any image or color on the surface of the apron at the request of the customer. Thanks to this, skinali can organically fit into any interior from classic to high-tech.

Advantages of the glass backsplash:

Cons:

Mosaic

Mosaic backsplash is also quite a popular option for decorating the work surface. Mosaic can be made of different materials - ceramics, stone, glass, etc. All of them are durable and practical, however, the mosaic has a number of disadvantages. Due to the small size, the mosaic kitchen backsplash has a large number of tile joints that absorb moisture and dirt and, over time, require updating. Laying mosaics on walls is a rather troublesome business, but, unlike tiles, mosaics can not be laid on perfectly even walls.

Stone

Stone is not so common in kitchen decoration, mainly because of the high cost of this material. For the manufacture of a stone kitchen apron, granite or marble is used. This is a strong and durable material that is not afraid of moisture and high temperatures, but a stone apron is not suitable for every interior. Best of all, a stone kitchen apron looks in combination with the same stone countertop.

MDF or chipboard

Quite a budget solution, but not very practical. As a rule, an apron made of MDF or chipboard plates is selected to match the countertop or even made from the same material. Such a kitchen apron is easy to wash, but it is afraid of fire and moisture, it is easy to scratch it with a sharp object. If moisture gets on the ends of the panels or in the seams, it can be deformed.

Metal

Stainless steel is used for metal splashbacks. This is a strong and durable material, but a stainless steel apron will not be cheap. A metal backsplash is suitable for modern-style kitchens, such as high-tech or loft, and will go well with a stainless steel sink and stove. In classic interiors, a metal apron would not be appropriate.

Plastic

Plastic kitchen apron is one of the most budget options. Among its main advantages are unpretentiousness in care and low price. However, plastic is short-lived, afraid of fire, as well as rough mechanical influences, fades over time.

If we talk about the design of an apron for a small kitchen, you should pay attention to such details. Choose a light-colored apron with a smooth texture.

The drawing on the apron should be small, but if you choose a glass apron with photo printing, choose photos with a perspective that take your eyes inside the photo. This will help visually enlarge the small kitchen.

Vertical lines on the backsplash will make it visually taller, while horizontal lines will expand it.

Avoid large patterns, large relief and dark tones. A kitchen apron in dark colors not only visually reduces the kitchen, but is also very impractical.

When my clients purchased this charming 1940's home in the Seattle neighborhood of Wedgwood, they were amazed by how intact the original kitchen was. It was like a perfect time capsule. The color palette was avocado green and buttercream yellow. The highlights were an original retro built-in banquette and vintage oven! The challenge we faced (besides the awesome but dated finishes) was the closed floor plan typical in this era of homes and the lack of storage. So, we opened the kitchen to the adjacent dining and living room, bringing it up to speed with modern-day living. In opening it up, we also walled off a doorway that went from the kitchen to the hallway, but it was completely unnecessary and allowed us to gain an entire wall of cabinets that didn't exist previously. For the finishes, we kept it classic with mostly gray and white but brought in a little flare and interest with the herringbone backsplash and brushed brass finishes because who doesn't love a little gold? Also, we added color with the finishing details like the rug and countertop decor because those things are a great way to add interest and warmth to a space and can be easily changed when it's time for a fresh new look. --- Project designed by interior design studio Kimberlee Marie Interiors.
