Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)FAQ

Can You Combine Mid-Century Modern With The Rustic Style?

Combining two opposing design styles isn’t necessarily a good thing. The idea behind mid-century modern is about metropolitan life. With rustic designs, it’s about country farmhouse living. Combining them would be too much of a style contrast.

What Are My Options If I Don't Want Wood Ceiling Beams?

Aluminum ceiling beans are safe and easy to install. The beams are made for peaks, valleys, screens, and rafters. Another great thing about aluminum rathers is that they’re fireproof.

What Are The Best Reclaimed Materials For A Rustic Living Room?

Texture and material are the most important elements to consider when using reclaimed materials. For rustic living rooms, use vintage items from old barns like a wooden double sliding door or antique hitching post. Chicken wire also makes for excellent decor.

What Kind Of Carpet Is Good For A Rustic Living Room?

Instead of carpet, use an area rug. A large modern farmhouse area rug would complement your wood floors. For added safety, you could use an area rug that was made with fireproof materials.

Can I Use A Rustic Chandelier With Real Candles?

A candelabra is a chandelier with real candles. Before the advent of electricity, candelabras were used in living rooms and dining rooms. Be aware that candelabras are a fire hazard. Do not leave a candelabra unattended.

Rustic Living Room Conclusion

Rustic living room ideas are massive. Warm wood, fireplace surround, or dark wood are a few features of the interior style. Living room design is meant to stimulate your indoor spaces. When in doubt, follow your personality like you would with any other space.

41 Best Rustic Living Room Ideas

To quote Game of Thrones, winter is coming.... Or rather, it’s already here. It may be time, then, to rethink your interior and maybe gear it toward more rustic sensibilities. Naturally, it’s the perfect look for those spending time at their ski retreat in the mountains or their cabin by the lake, but it also works well in city homes. The beauty of a rustic space is that it doesn’t have to feel too buttoned-up: In fact, the more reclaimed wood and patina, the better. For those unfamiliar with the style, though, it can seem a daunting task, one that could easily veer into lumberjack territory. Here, we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite rustic living rooms for some seriously chic winter inspo to help you get started.

1

Wood Works

Courtesy of Purple Cherry Architects

Materials matter, and the more attention you can pay to the detail of your wood grain, stone, and metals, the better. This living room by Purple Cherry Architects lets these elements shine, with an exposed wood ceiling and a towering stone fireplace.

2

Window Walls

Photography by Virginia Macdonald

Rustic living rooms can often feel very dark and moody, so we’d recommend juxtaposing that with a lighter elements. The best way to bring that sensibility, of course, is plenty of windows to let the sunshine in. Interior designer Anne Hepfer added this look to her cottage in Ontario, Canada: “I loved the look of a modern, Belgian-inspired feel with black windows, clear white oak floors, and a neutral palette,” she says. “Keep it simple and clean so that you don’t distract from the natural beauty outside.”

3

Get Modern

Gaelle Le Boulicaut

Just because you want to go cozy doesn’t mean you need to rely on taxidermy and rough-hewn surfaces. Take a cue from designer Tobias Petri, who created this minimal Alpine retreat for his family using materials found on-site. “We used larch wood from the nearby mountains, concrete, and the [found] stone. That’s it. Nothing else,” Petri says. “No fancy materials. No fancy tiles. Simple and local.”

4

Add a Pop of Color

Photography by Andrew Giammarco

Traditional rustic is often thought of as being rife with earth tones, so change up the formula a bit by adding a bright red, green, or yellow, like in this space by Hattie Sparks. “We went with a darker paint to envelop the homeowners and provide a contrast to the greenery outside,” says Hattie Collins, the firm’s owner. “And we kept the windows bright and open to help the room feel even more connected with nature.”

5

Patterns Please

Photography by Michael J Lee

We love a rustic look that takes liberties with the genre’s traditional formula, like this space by interior designer Robin Gannon, which plays with color, pattern, and greenery. “We accented the reclaimed beams with beautiful natural grasscloth wallcovering, woven shades, reupholstered blue mohair Womb chairs, an antique rug— and of course, the antler chandelier gives the space a modern rustic touch,” she says.

6

Enjoy the View

Suzanna Scott Photography

Sometimes less really is more. Regan Baker Design gave this living room a clean, bright, straightforward look so the jaw-dropping views can take center stage. “We kept the color palette simple with earthy highlights so the eye doesn’t have to adjust,” she says. “And we sourced loungy sectional and swivel chair that face both into the room and out to enjoy the view.”

7

Old School

Courtesy of Liz Caan

If you’re lucky enough to live in a home with historic details, then your living room’s interiors should frame and complement these old-school aspects rather than competing with them. “The white-painted wooden slats allow you to see the beautiful stone fireplace and actually appreciate the original details, like the hay feeder and the stall door from this carriage house,” says Liz Caan, who designed this rustic space.

8

Soaring Ceilings

Courtesy of the Wiseman Group

One of the best ways to make a statement in a rustic living room is with a bold, sky-high ceiling made with reclaimed wood. We love this space by the Wiseman Group, which features a jaw-dropping upper section. “As in nature, the timbers in this mountain retreat start low and reach high to create a wooded canopy above,” says James Hunter, the firm’s design director.

9

Soft and Light

Claudia Casbarian for Julie Soefer Photography

Rustic isn’t a one-look-fits-all sensibility, so there’s room for those with more traditional tastes to get into the aesthetic as well. This space by Chandos Interiors, for instance, pairs subdued blue hues with an all-white backdrop for a lighter look. “The organic textures and reclaimed ceiling beams really make the transitional style work—giving it a little patina so those modern touches don’t feel too cold,” says founder Chandos Dodson Epley.

10

Get Outdoorsy

Photography by Mali Azima

If you’re the type who spends a lot of time exploring nature, then a rustic living room is a great space to bring in some of that sensibility. Take this space as an example, which GordonDunning designed for someone who loved fly fishing and hunting. “We wanted to create a space that felt rustic—but with a layer of sophistication,” say cofounders Cate Dunning and Lathem Gordon. “The house gives us royal hunting lodge vibes, and we’re all about it!”

11

Just Beachy

Photography by Alice Gao

Not all rustic living rooms have to be situated in a cabin in the woods or a man cave in the mountains. This particular space by Noor Property Group is on the water, so it immediately conjures up beachy vibes. “My intention was to create an airy and minimal space that felt calm and clean,” says principal Amalia Graziani. “I heavily emphasized natural materials and rough fabrics but kept a pared-down palette so the water views and surrounding nature remained the focal point.”

12

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Haris Kenjar

Heirloom or antique furniture that has a bit of a worn feel, or reclaimed materials like recycled wood, feel right at home in a rustic living room. “Source things that reflect the colors and textures found in your natural environment,” says Sean Anderson of this living space from his moody Memphis bungalow. “Seek out items with a patina, things that had a life before you found them.”

13

California Dreamin’

Read McKendree

This space by Workshop APD masterfully balances an exposed wood ceiling with warm, beachy hues for the ultimate rustic California retreat. Perfect for a staycation, or for those who aren’t overly fond of the tried-and-true antler chandelier.

14

Sleepaway Camp

Courtesy of Bruce Fox

In Wisconsin, interior designer Bruce Fox transformed a Boy Scout camp into a generational family compound. “The room is populated with many different styles of furniture from wicker to midcentury, giving it a laid-back yet sophisticated feel, allowing our client to relax and live a ‘less complicated’ life while at camp,” he says.

15

La Dolce Vita

Richard Powers

You don’t have to go for a woodsy vibe to get the rustic look—the rolling hills of Puglia can work just as well (if not better). This living space by James Thurstan Waterworth combines a stone fireplace with iron sconces to create the perfect Call Me by Your Name aesthetic.

16

Add Cozy Layers

Photography by Stephanie Russio

As the winter months approach, you’ll want to curl up somewhere comfy, so creating a rustic living space that feels warm and inviting should be top of mind. This particular space—a Tahoe, California, retreat designed by Marea Clark Interiors—brings exactly that energy. “Our goal was to speak to the mountain setting and incorporate wood and other natural materials but make it suitable for all seasons with a sophisticated palette,” says Clark.

17

Try a Modern Touch

Courtesy of Tom Stringer

Sometimes, marrying a modern sensibility with a traditional rustic living room can yield the best results. Here, Tom Stringer Design Partners added a few subtle accents to keep the space from adhering too closely to the rustic playbook. “I always make sure to add a touch of modernity to the room, whether it’s a clean-lined cocktail table, modern lamps, or contemporary art,” says Stringer.
“Rustic is nice, but if not balanced properly, it can become overbearing.”

18

Opt for Moody Hues

Stephen Kent Johnson

This home in Stamford, Connecticut, brings the drama without being overbearing. Interior designer Ryan Lawson added a rug from Marrakech and a sculptural table by Egg Collective to create a rustic vibe that still feels contemporary.

interior, furniture and wallpaper in country style

Country style - the embodiment of tranquility, comfort and naturalness in the interior. In the article I will consider its features, what mistakes are made during creation. I will provide unique design ideas. I'll tell you about the combination of colors, decor, furniture and materials that will harmoniously fit into the creation of such a living room (hall) or kitchen-living room.

Features of country style in the interior of the living room

Country has many branches with a bias towards a certain nationality. But frosted walls, a fireplace with a wood finish, a sideboard with colorful dishes on display are a clear sign of a rustic-style home. At the peak of popularity, its distinctive features were formed in the form of:

  • natural colors;

    Natural colors

  • modesty. When arranging, only natural materials are used, the ceiling and walls are painted in one color;

    Modesty and uniform color

  • painting utensils. Sometimes a sideboard with dishes made of copper, wood or ceramics is placed in the living room. It is decorated with a hand pattern, the dishes attract with their simplicity;

    Painting tableware

  • handmade. Decor and handmade furniture emphasize the colorful style.

    Patchwork furniture

Rustic furniture made of metal is allowed, but under certain conditions. Furniture should be wrought iron, copper, iron or brass. There should be no reflective and shiny objects.

Lighting should create a relaxing atmosphere. It is necessary to exclude neon lamps, and purchase a lamp with low heat dissipation or fluorescent light bulbs. A forged brass chandelier with swirls is suitable as a central light source. If there is no fireplace, candles with candlesticks will replace it.

A fireplace is a great solution for a rustic-style room.

In the budget version, the walls in the living room are not painted, they are covered with classic checkered or striped wallpaper.

Solid or warm tones should be preferred.

Stylized stone or wood wallpaper will complement the interior with comfort. Wallpaper with a large print and 3D visualization will help hide repair defects. The room will seem lively.

Color solutions and materials for decorating the hall

Do not use bright colors, the exceptions are light green, yellow, crimson. A room with the addition of a bright hue should maintain color balance. The color palette is not used in excess, and is used when designing large rooms. Excessive presence of bright decor will smooth furniture in light colors.

It is better to give preference to light colors

Walls

No plastic panels, partitions, lining the walls of the frames. It is recommended to use natural wood. The walls initially can not be leveled and decorated with a stone finish. Wallpaper is replaced with plaster with careless application to the walls, wood paneling, you can paint the walls. Complement the walls with aged wood, lacquered shelves, landscape paintings. Advice. Contrasting wallpapers are glued to one of the walls, and bright furniture is placed in the opposite direction. This will balance the psycho-emotional state of a person.

This style is characterized by a combination of wood and stone

Floor

Excessive use of wood in the style breaks the harmony. When the ceiling and walls are already mixed with wood, the floor is covered with tiles, vinyl imitation, high pile carpets. In such a living room there are no flooded floors, linoleum or carpet.

High pile carpets fit perfectly

Ceiling

Rustic style suitable for furnishing country houses. The spacious living room is predisposed to finishing the ceiling with massive wood. The beams will fill the top of the room. The effect of a tree embedded in the walls is created, then the ceiling is excluded from the design of the room. In apartment or private houses, streams are painted in pastel colors, covered with wood slats.

Rustic living room decor

Handmade items, knitwear, furniture will complete and complement the rustic style. They will create a careless mess and comfort.

Knitted items

Furniture

Furniture upholstery must be made of natural leather and fabrics without a pattern. You can choose furniture on your own, focusing on straight lines, and the natural quality of the headset. Massive, rough and polished furniture will betray natural style. Armchairs and a sofa can be wicker. Then they are covered with decorated textiles. The headset is placed throughout the room, chairs are placed next to the window or coffee table. A sideboard with colorful dishes is placed next to the exit from the living room or between the windows, it is better to put a bookcase in the dark part of the room.

Leather furniture can be complemented with textile pillows and skins

Accessories and lighting

Knitted grandmother's plaid, handmade pillows, handmade tablecloths complete the look. Among the accessories to be preferred:

Lighting in warm colors will not irritate.

Bulbs must not be neon.

The more candles the better. Wall lamps will replace table legs, provide more space for other decor items.

Common mistakes in interior design

Inept mixing of more than 3 colors breaks the harmony of the style. Then you need to avoid mixing and the presence of bright colors. Preference should be given to warm shades of wood, stone. A palette of olive, sand, lavender colors will do.

Vibrant colors require contrast balance.

Bright decorative elements attract the eye, they are placed throughout the living room.

Space zoning should be distributed as a percentage, where most of the space is occupied by massive furniture, carpets.

The combination of many zones in the living room breaks the country style. An excess of furniture or accessories is unacceptable.

It is not necessary to combine a large number of zones in the living room

Switches and sockets are better to hide, disguise, and install at the time of the start of the repair. Windows, made in a different country style, are covered with light textiles. A frame with many windows will fit perfectly into the rustic style. Lighting with neon bulbs can be corrected with knitted shades.

It is better to use conventional low power lamps.

Sometimes, with a large space, they put a stretch ceiling, or make it multi-tiered.

In country style, there is either a ceiling, and it is made entirely of wood, or it does not exist at all, but this space is filled with massive beams.

Ideas

Realizing the idea of country in the room, the owners of houses are guided by the trend of modernity, spiritual preferences, national traits, listen to the advice of the designer.

Rustic style in the living room defuses the atmosphere. The atmosphere of comfort is created with the help of upholstered furniture, warm lighting, harmoniously filled space. You can design the design yourself, but it will take more time. Then time-worn things made of wood, worn stone will complement the originality of the living room.

Living room interior in warm colors: interior solutions 0 Comments

A room intended for rest and reception of guests should be bright and comfortable. This means that it would be better if there were a living room in warm colors. When developing its design, it is worth studying the main nuances and important aspects of its creation, and getting acquainted with the finished works of designers. The choice, of course, depends on the preferences of the owners, the size of the room and the required functionality.

Highlights in the interior design of the living room

Upholstered furniture should not be placed around the perimeter of the room. This is not relevant in modern trends. In addition, you can not clutter up the space with objects that will not leave room for functional areas.

It is better to choose the central group, other items will be placed around it. Most often it is a TV and a sofa, maybe a fireplace.

Furniture that should be present in the living room:

  • armchairs;
  • sofa;
  • shelves and racks for books;
  • coffee table.

For a large room, you can put a chest of drawers, cabinets and bar counters, a computer desk. If the room is cramped, then it is better to choose transformers. This furniture is functional and saves space.
