Porches front doors

Here’s why front porches have doors on some Charleston homes

Valentine's Day is coming up quick, y'all, and you know what that means!

It means that soon store shelves will be filled with heart-shaped candy from chocolates to jelly beans and everything in between, that you can only get around this time of year. Of course, while this might sound like the definition of a "good problem," sometimes having too many options can be a bit overwhelming.

That's why we decided to poll The Potluck, It's a Southern Thing's subscription membership program, to find out which classic Valentine's Day candy they think is the best, and we were a little surprised by what did (and didn't) come up on top.

By the way, if you're looking for some Conversation Hearts with a few familiar Southern sayings to give to your sweetheart, we've got you covered.

You can see the results below, and you find out more about joining The Potluck here.

#5) Conversation hearts

Getty

While those adorable, pastel hearts may come to mind first when asked about classic Valentine's Day candy, that doesn't mean conversation hearts are going to come in first place in our ranking -- not even close. In fact, the classic candies came in dead last by a long shot. It could have something to do with their chalky consistency...or maybe it's their chalky flavor? It's one of the two.

#4) Cinnamon Hearts

Amazon

If you've ever had a handful of these -- and haven't we all -- you know that you either love 'em or hate 'em. Unfortunately for cinnamon imperial hearts, it seems members of The Potluck fall into the latter category. It's weird because it's almost like some folks don't want to have the overwhelming flavor (and heat) of cinnamon stuck in their mouth, not to mention their teeth, for a whole day.

#3) Chocolate samplers

Getty

Chocolate samplers are another candy that we seem to associate with this specific holiday. They're probably the safest option over all because there's bound to be at least one sweet treat among the mix that your sweetheart likes, whether it be dark chocolate, coconut filled or those little orange crème ones that taste way better than they sound. Just make sure it comes in a heart-shaped boxed or it doesn't count.

#2) Hershey's Hugs and Kisses

Amazon

It makes sense that candies called hugs and kisses would go over well on a day dedicated to love, so we're not too surprised to see these bite-size Hershey's chocolates come up close to the top spot of our ranking. Can you get these tiny, aluminum-foil wrapped sweets year-round? Okay, yes, but do they somehow seem to taste better during the month of February? Absolutely.

#1) Reese's Peanut Butter Hearts

Reese's Valentine's Day HeartsAmazon

We can't say this one caught us too much by surprise. Is it ever really a fair fight when Reese's peanut butter and chocolate are combined into an adorable on-theme shape, like say, a heart? While those chocolate samplers, conversation hearts and Hershey's kisses may be the candies we often think of first in regards to Feb. 14, this is proof it's the Reese's we go for first (and the one we're least likely to share even if it is Valentine's Day.

Lighting Ideas

When it comes to the front porch, lighting is critical. You don’t want to overlook this vital part of the decor. If you want to add a modern vibe to your porch, your lighting must reflect that. Modern Planters

If going modern, you want to make sure that the plants also speak to your modern vibe. Opt for large planters with tropicals or even moody colors. Don’t Forget the Ceiling

Adding a finished touch to the ceiling on a covered porch is a new and modern element, but it totally completes the space. Just because your front porch is outside doesn’t mean it doesn’t need a lovely ceiling.

Dark and Moody

When it comes to making a modern front porch, you should really start with your door. The front door’s color will set the whole tone for your front porch. Here are some quick do’s and don’t’s for choosing a color for your front door.

Do’s Don’t’s
  • Stick with the Classics
Use a neutral hue such as brown, black, or gray for a look that will withstand the test of time. Even deep reds and navy blues are classic front door colors that act as neutrals. If your style changes or you alter your home’s exterior later, neutral hues will adapt with you.
  • Be Afraid of Color
Some people are nervous about using bold and bright colors for their doors, but why not experiment? A yellow or lime green makes a bold statement on your front door. If brights are too daunting, try a dark version of a color, such as dark green, burgundy, or wine red.
  • Purchase the Right Paint
It’s essential to use the proper paint to prevent peeling and fading since your door will be exposed to outside elements. Latex exterior paints provide weather-resistant coverage. If your door is metal, look for one with built-in rust protection.
  • Neglect Your Screen Door
If your front door features a storm door or screen door, you can paint its frame a contrasting hue for another punch of color.
  • Make it Monochrome
If you have a smaller house, this tip is for you. Visually expand your home by painting the door, trim, window frames, and exterior the same color. A monochromatic color scheme also provides a neutral backdrop for accessories to stand out, such as the planters and sconces.

  • Ignore the Trim
Your front door trim is also ideal for painting. White is classic, but another option is to make the door pop with contrasting trim. Rich brown tones, for example, can warm up a cool-colored door. Dark trim stops a white or neutral door from fading into the surrounding color of a house.

Frequently Asked QuestionsFAQ

How can I make my front porch look modern yet also expensive?

Try using a darker hue with contrasting colors to make your front porch look expensive. This will also give your house an air of luxury without breaking the bank. Place tall planters on each side of the front door, using a nice contrasting color for the pots.

What is the best modern flooring for a porch?

If you want your porch to have a modern vibe, the floor needs to be modern and trendy right now; masonry floors of brick, stone, or tile are all popular choices. They're water-resistant, but it's essential to know that the weight of these materials can require additional support when used for elevated porches. Poured or stamped concrete is another option.

Can I use indoor lighting on my front porch?

While there are so many beautiful interior lights on the market, you may be tempted to use a stunning chandelier or pendant on your front porch, but you should not use an indoor light fixture outdoors in wet locations. They aren't sealed against moisture and will stop working during the first heavy rain. Moreover, they aren't corrosion resistant and could become an electrocution hazard if the parts that cover the electrical connections deteriorate. Don't despair, though — exterior lighting has come a long way, and there are so many beautiful options for exterior lighting now. Related: 40 Best Landscape Lighting Ideas

What is a fun way to add character while staying modern?

If you want to add some fun character and keep with the modern look, play up your accessories like light fixtures. You can also add in personalization to your porch with modern decor signs and family name signs. Stick with a monochromatic look, which will help you maintain a modern look.

Unusual entrances of Irkutsk: how residents decorate their "front doors"

What associations do you have when you hear the word “entrance”? We are sure that most of them are not the most rosy. Because in some houses they have a completely unsightly appearance - dirty, with scribbled walls and falling off plaster. But there are also very unusual entrances in Irkutsk, it is a pleasure to visit them! And the residents themselves made them so, investing their work, love and desire to live clean. nine0004

For a new book - to the landing

Yes, here, in the third entrance of house No. 21b in the Pervomaisky microdistrict, a real fairy tale reigns. And it happened many years ago, when before the New Year, to the delight of everyone, snowflakes and confetti appeared on the walls.

- Then the neighbors began to thank me for the beauty, and I had nothing to do with it, - says Svetlana Prokopenko, the eldest in the entrance. - The holiday was made for us by female students who wanted to share their mood. nine0004

Residents share their crafts.Photo: Yulia PYKHALOVA

The residents liked the experiment, and they began to "create" themselves. On each floor, a thematic corner has appeared, to which those responsible are assigned.

So, on the first floor there is a stand with up-to-date information, a calendar, photos from subbotniks and even the text of neighborly etiquette, on the second - a local history corner with photographs of Irkutsk, then - an exposition of drawings. And on the fourth one you can take a volume of Pushkin or Dostoevsky to read - this is an access library! And the fifth floor is dedicated to the history of the Great Patriotic War. nine0004

Of course, Svetlana Prokopenko would like to mention all those who worked hard to create comfort here, but the article is not enough to list all the residents! And each of them deserves special attention, because with their friendship and diligence they turned the most ordinary entrance of a five-story building into a space that does not leave anyone who crossed its threshold indifferent.

Children's drawings on the walls

This entrance to Griboedova 2 is cozy like a family. There are flowers everywhere, and children's drawings hang on the walls. This tradition has been around for many years, and is carefully preserved by Victoria Yushina, a resident of the apartment on the 4th floor.

No, this is not a corridor of a kindergarten... It's an entrance! Photo: Yulia PYKHALOVA

- Once upon a time, the residents said that they wanted us to have not just an entrance, but a cozy front, - says 80-year-old Viktoria Vladimirovna . - The first pictures were drawn by the boys Sasha and Seryozha together with their father and hung on a string ...

The windows are decorated for Christmas. Photo: Yulia PYKHALOVA

Now they themselves have grown children, and the tradition is alive. They come to bring drawings, decorate the entrance for the holidays, especially for Christmas. They treat each other with pies.

- I am glad that almost all residents help, everyone has their own duties. Someone waters the flowers, someone is responsible for the land. We do everything together, - shares Victoria Vladimirovna.

Surprisingly, in the neighborhood - on Griboedova, 3 - there is also an amazing entrance, where the real keeper of the hearth, Vanda Ivanovna Slyusar, lives. Thanks to her efforts, everything here is clean, comfortable and beautiful. nine0004

New Year's mood

In fact, it is very simple to create it.

- On the eve of the New Year, my family and I decided to raise the morale of the neighbors, so to speak, and just make it beautiful around, - says Tatyana Marchenko, a resident of house No. 236/1 on Baikalskaya Street. - And they announced in our general chat a competition for the best door decoration. nine0004

Any apartment could participate. Neighbors, but responded from seven apartments, showed ingenuity. Everyone decorated their front door with their children.

- All the "works" were original, it was not easy to choose one winner, so everyone was presented with gifts - sweets, sledges, eco-bags, - adds Tatyana. - A small holiday was arranged right on the playground.

- Neighbors in these block sections are very friendly, - says Vera Yaschenko, foreman of the site of the management company that services this house. All decisions are made collectively. They themselves look after the order, they really want it to be clean and beautiful.
