50 Living Room Carpet Ideas
Through These Eyes
Carpet in the living room may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's certainly not an automatic design no-no either. Rather than dismissing it entirely, sometimes, you just need to embrace it.
Aside from being a soft to place to stand, living room carpet can make a room feel cozier and more colorful. Have carpet in your own living room? Here's 50 ways to make it work.

We all know that one rug can look great on top of carpet, but so does two. Layering multiple rugs on top of carpet creates a multifaceted look full of texture that will take your living room up a notch.

Just as you can create a cohesive look with similar coloring in the carpet and the furniture and accessories that surround it, so can you create a cohesive look by mimicking the look of the carpet in other spaces as well—like the kitchen cabinets. This works well with open-concept areas.

Bringing texture into your living room doesn't have to mean covering it in wicker or velvet—it can also mean embracing it small ways, like choosing a more prominent weave or tuft in your carpet.

No matter how you style your living room and its carpet, don't forget some kind of contrasting color, even if you're going with a monochrome look. A dash of color in something as small as a picture frame or decorative bowl can help break up the space and keep it from looking too drab.

Think of your living room carpet like a blank canvas and your furniture like the paint it sits upon it. And though your canvas shouldn't be covered in stuff before paint is added, a little pattern never hurt anyone. Try out a carpet with a small pattern and see for yourself.

An additional stylish look for your carpeted living room is tying in furniture that's slightly darker than your carpet and pairing it with a rich accent color. The room will feel coordinated, but not too matchy-matchy.

Sometimes, a neutral carpet is the best one in your living room, especially if your decor style is more maximalist. Keeping things simple will help keep things from becoming chaotic.

For a living room with a timeless feeling, pair your lightly-colored carpet with off-white walls and black accents. Eye-catching black is further highlighted by the cream tones of the space, showing why contrast can be your home decor's best friend.

For a stellar color combo, go for gold and gray. Gray carpet gets a reputation for being boring, but it's the perfect blank slate when it comes to pops of bold and classy gold.

You don't have to cover up your carpet—either with furniture or rugs. A simple look can look just as good as more maximalist one. For the best effect, make sure all your furniture and decor coordinates well with the carpet, since there won't be much of it.

Don't have the time (or headspace) to pick perfectly complementary colors for your carpet and living room furniture? There's an easier way—make them all the same color. Using different shades of the same color will provide a coordinated look with minimal effort.

You can bring in more than one color into your carpet without a bold pattern or colorblocking. Instead, look for carpet with multicolored tufts, which provide a subtle touch of color.

For a subtlety luxe look, pair plush carpet with a few touches of velvet, like in a throw pillow or ottoman. The richness of the carpet will easily complement the lushness of the velvet accents.

It is supremely important for your flooring to harmonize with your interior decoration. And in this living room, the carpet not only compliments the design but also adds character and value to the room.
Carpet these days is not as common for flooring in living rooms as you might think. We crunched some numbers and based on hundreds of thousands of living rooms, found that only 13.6% of living rooms have carpet.
With the growing popularity of hardwood, laminate, and the many new types of flooring hitting the market such as many types of stone flooring, carpeting is simply not all that popular.
Moreover, area rugs in living rooms provide the benefits of carpet yet give you options and let you have the coveted hardwood or laminate.
Nevertheless, 13.6% of living rooms is still a big number and so we figured many people do want carpet in their living rooms. Accordingly, we put together this gallery so that you can get ideas for your own home.

When in doubt go for carpets in a lighter hue!
You can never go wrong with choosing carpets in white, beige, and cream as these are some of the shades that go well with literally all kinds of living rooms, especially if it is a swanky one.

Should you get carpet for your living room?
If it’s your thing, sure. It’s not a problem; in fact, there are some big benefits such as:
- Soft: Other floors are hard, which isn’t so nice, especially if you like sitting on the floor.
- Warmer: If you like being barefoot in your home, the carpet is much nicer on bare feet.
- Noise canceling: This is a big benefit, especially if you watch television or listen to music or have noisy kids.
- Great for kids/Bad for kids (see below): I have young kids… read my comments about kids and carpeting below.
But like most things for the home, there are some disadvantages such as:
- Gets dirty and is hard to clean: You need to spend a lot of time cleaning it and at various intervals, you need to steam clean it.
- Can get stained: This is a big problem, although there are stain-resistant options. Nevertheless, eventually, dirt won’t come out.
- Gets dated: Think 1970’s. That crazy shag carpet was great then, it’s terrible now.
- Must be replaced eventually: Carpeting doesn’t last nearly as long as a quality hardwood or tile and so you must pay for replacement every several years.
Kids and carpeting in the living room
If you have young kids as we do, carpeted rooms are great because it’s soft and warm for them to play on. This is especially good when they’re learning to walk. I also much prefer sitting on carpet than wood when playing with them.
However, kids spill a lot and so you can expect to get some pretty horrendous stains on your carpet if you let them eat or drink in the living room. Sure, you can try to stop them from eating and drinking in the living room, but at some point, they’re going to make their way in there with that ketchup-filled hotdog or cup of grape juice.
One final reason it’s not so great for kids is when they get a bit older, such as 4 or 5 and they start playing with trains or Legos. The uneven surface is difficult for them to set up their scenes, cities, etc.
But isn’t the living room for adults?
The old school home had a formal living room and a separate family room. The family room is presumably where kids would play and the living room was “out-of-bounds”. Our home has this layout.
However, many homes today don’t have a separate family room and so the living room is the main sitting/entertainment room of the home. In this case, kids will be in there a lot.
That said, we have a separate family room for the kids, but they spend much time in the living room too. FYI, both our living room and family room has hardwood floor. We bought some kids’ mats to play on for the family room.
Which type of carpet should you get?
This is a mega topic on its own. Check out our massive carpet buying guide here. With respect to carpet color, beige is by far the most popular, followed by gray. We have a data-based carpet color chart here.
That said, if you have kids or plan on using your living room quite a bit, you definitely want a stain-resistant carpet. On the flip side, because it’s your living room, you want it to be nice.
Wool is the very best fiber, but it’s not stain-resistant. If a nice carpet is your focus, wool is your best option and since a living room can be a showpiece of a room, wool should be considered. Oh yeah, wool is also the most expensive which may force your hand to get synthetic.

Someone may consider carpets in the interior of the living room an outdated phenomenon, but this is not so - a lot of photos with stylish interiors prove the opposite. Soft carpets along with textiles, vases, figurines and paintings add softness, comfort and warmth to the room. So, how to choose the right carpet for the living room and not make a mistake with the material, shape and size?
Living room carpet can be completed with sofa cushions in color
Designers' opinion
For centuries, luxurious carpets on the floor have been a symbol of wealth. Of course, Persian hand-woven products are still designed to show the prosperity of the owners of the house to others, but now in most cases it is just an apartment decor, as well as an extra way to insulate a cold floor.
Stylish handmade carpet can organically fit into any interior
According to designers, carpets are still relevant today. Modern carpets have such a diverse design that when looking at them there will be no thought of old-fashioned or Soviet times. A variety of patterns and drawings can both complement the interior and act as an independent composition around which the design of the entire room is built.
Black and white rug fits perfectly into the interior of the living room
Types of materials
The first carpets were made from wool and silk, these natural materials are still used today, such products are much more expensive than synthetic counterparts. Products made of artificial materials are more popular due to brighter colors, easy care and more affordable prices.
Round carpet in the interior of the living room
Wool or silk
Woolen carpets in the interior of the living room are the most environmentally friendly option. Such products are very soft and really warm, and their pile is pleasant to the touch. Wool is also quite durable and strong, the coating of this material looks expensive and solid. If you have chosen a classic style for your living room, a traditional patterned wool rug is a great choice. Carpet panels can be layered on top of each other or used separately in different parts of the room.
Oriental wool carpet in the interior of the living room in a classic style
The color of wool carpets is usually muted or rather pale. The fact is that wool absorbs paint worse than synthetic fibers. In addition, the wool pile is prone to moths and mold, and also quickly accumulates dust and dirt.
Soft wool carpet makes the living room cozy
Important! In order for a natural product to last longer, it must be additionally treated with dirt-repellent and anti-moth agents.
Wool carpet will be the best addition to a classic living room
Silk is another popular material for making carpets. Such products are very beautiful and durable, and the pattern on them is worked out to the smallest detail. Silk carpets are very expensive and capricious to care for, however, they look really rich in the interior of the living room.
Silk carpet requires delicate care
Synthetics
Viscose is an excellent alternative to natural materials. In appearance, to the touch, viscose carpets resemble silk. Viscose fibers are obtained by processing cellulose, which is a natural raw material. Viscose is well dyed in any colors, the pattern is bright and resistant. Carpets made of this material have a light silk overflow. Unlike silk or wool, viscose pile does not fade over time.

With a limited budget, you should choose propylene products, such carpets are the most affordable in terms of cost. In addition, polypropylene products are no less colorful and bright, easy to wash and do not accumulate dust on themselves. However, such carpets have a significant drawback - a short service life. Polypropylene pile quickly tramples, and the coating itself loses its shape. In addition, propylene quickly electrifies, does not tolerate water, and also fades under the influence of ultraviolet radiation. Such carpeting is difficult to clean even with a good vacuum cleaner, and its service life does not exceed five years.

Acrylic looks like wool, but is moth-resistant, easy to care for and more affordable. Acrylic carpets fit perfectly into the interior of any living room due to the variety of shapes and colors. However, this material has a drawback: acrylic accumulates a static charge.
What to look for when choosing a carpet
Modern carpets differ not only in material, but also in the method of manufacture, size and shape. Carpets can take up space under a coffee table or be the size of an entire living room. However, these are not the only differences.
Manufacturing method
There are only two types of carpet production - handmade or factory. Factory-made products are certainly cheaper than those made by hand. Carpets produced at the factory are most often synthetic.
Handmade quality is very high, such carpets are valued all over the world and sometimes cost a fortune. Hand-woven fabrics are most often made of wool or silk. Such carpets are very expensive, however, their service life is calculated in decades.
Pile quality
This parameter is very important, it should be taken into account when choosing a carpet for the living room. The length of the pile varies from short (less than 5 mm) to medium (up to 1.5 cm) and long (from 1.5 mm). More practical in care, of course, short and medium pile. Long piles accumulate dirt and dust faster and are more difficult to clean, so long pile carpets should not be laid in a living room where many people often gather.
Dimensions
Large carpets (from 6 m2) are able to occupy the entire living room, uniting all areas and interior details into one whole. This design looks solid and complete. However, it should be borne in mind that the larger the carpet area, the more time is spent on cleaning.
Important! Large light carpet on the entire floor visually expands the space of the living room.
Average sizes vary from 3 to 6 m2, this option is considered the most optimal, because it fits easily into a living room of any size and style. With the help of such a carpet, you can highlight a specific area, for example, a soft corner. Carpets of medium size can be used for zoning the living room and as a color accent.
Small carpets less than 2 sq. m can hardly be considered a full coverage. They are used in the interior of the living room for decoration, being a color accent. Most often, small rugs are laid by the fireplace, sofa, window, or next to the bed.
Form
The shape of the carpet for the living room should be selected, taking into account the size of the room and the flooring itself. Very large rectangular canvases in the entire floor look more harmonious if they do not have elaborate and bright ornaments - this way the interior will not look tasteless. If you choose a long path, you can visually increase the length of the room.
Carpets can follow the shape of the furniture or room, so if you plan to rearrange in the future, after it they may not fit into the new interior. Cloths of a round, oval shape are most often used to highlight zones and to place accents. The pattern of the coating may overlap with wallpaper, textile elements or upholstery of upholstered furniture. How oval carpets look in the interior of the living room can be seen in the photo.
Round shapes will fit well into the interior, if the furniture and the outlines of the room are made without sharp lines, sharp corners. Such carpets are well combined with arches, columns, semicircular niches, furniture with smooth outlines of Art Deco. Options for using round carpets in the interior of the living room are presented in the photo below.
Color range
The choice of color for carpeting depends on the prevailing shades in the interior of the living room. If the upholstery of bright furniture is bright and with large patterns, the carpet should be more neutral in color and preferably solid. On a dark floor, light carpets look spectacular, while for lighter, neutral floors, it is better to choose brighter colors. Carpet and curtains look good in the same color and style.
If the interior of the living room is dominated by warm colors, then the color of the carpet should be kept in the same range. In a room made in darker colors, light carpets will look fresh and spectacular. The coloring and ornament of the carpet can be combined with any items in the living room: furniture, upholstery, curtains, paintings, bedspreads, pillows, wallpaper, figurines, vases, etc. The beige range of the interior can be diluted with rich chocolate or coffee color of carpets.
Important! Try not to match the color of the carpet to match the walls, it should be either darker or lighter.
If you decide to experiment and want to buy a bright carpet that does not match anything from the interior of the living room, you need to be very careful in choosing. Once you've chosen bright, beautifully patterned rugs to freshen up neutral hues in your living room, take a closer look. If everything is good for your taste, leave it as it is. If the choice seems not too good, complement the carpet with pillows or bedspreads of the same color.
Style selection
When choosing carpet for the floor, it is worth considering the style of the living room so that it is in place. What options can there be:
- Classical interiors look good with floral patterns, traditional baroque patterns, arabesques;
- If there is a lot of genuine antique furniture in the room, it is more appropriate to select carpets with faded, as if faded, shades;
- An aged carpet is well suited to any of the country style options;
- In modern style, the emphasis is on simplicity and minimalism, so it is better to choose a solid color product;
- An African-inspired floor covering in brown, sand or beige will perfectly fit into an ethnic-style living room;
- Coatings with unconstrained floral ornaments, as well as rugs, as if woven by hand, will fit into Provence.
How carpets look in the interior of the living room in various styles from classic to Provence can be seen in the photo below.
Carpeting can be stylish and trendy. In order for the carpet to fit perfectly into the interior of the living room, you need to choose the right size, shape and color. The choice of material should be approached from practical considerations. Combining aesthetics and practicality, you can complement the interior of the room with stylish decor, giving the living room a personality.

stylish and beautiful models. 80 photos of the best projects and advice on choosing a carpet
In modern times, carpets that used to decorate walls have long been a rarity in a person's home. However, floor models never lose their relevance, because without them a house or apartment will not be cozy and comfortable. That is why many, when re-arranging the living room, are interested in the question of which carpet is better to choose.
In the photo of living room carpets, you can find many different design options for such textiles. Everyone chooses depending on their own preferences and style of decoration of the room.
In our article, we will tell you in detail about carpets for the living room.
How to determine the right size and shape
The living room carpet should be purchased at the moment when all the furniture in the room has already been purchased and installed. And the first thing that needs to be determined in order to choose the ideal option is the size of the carpet.
In a situation where the room is not overloaded with furniture and all available has high legs, it is advisable to choose a larger carpet.
The ideal solution would be a canvas that will cover the entire space and will have drawings.
The more free space left uncovered by the carpet, the brighter it should be.
As for small carpets on the floor in a large living room, they will come in handy if zoning is necessary.
When two rooms are combined in one room, separating them with rugs is a good solution.
Also, with a large space in the living room, it will be important to decorate the floor with a round carpet.
If the room is small enough, use a carpet with a long soft pile in a light shade. It will not only create an atmosphere of comfort, but also help to make the space lighter, more spacious.
Carpets as a zoning technique
When deciding to zone the living room space with a carpet, you will need to skillfully arrange each zone. For example, wanting to focus on the separation of the dining area when located in the dining room, a table is placed on the carpet.
But it should be remembered that there must be a place on the carpet for chairs to this table.
In the event that a long narrow carpet is chosen as a furniture delimiter, it is laid between those items that are separated.
However, the carpet should not be placed too close to the furniture, it is best to leave a strip of about 10 cm free.
In order to make the separation of different furniture compositions in the large living room, the floor in the zones is covered with small rugs that match with each other.
It is best that the rugs in the interior of the living room have the same color, but their design is different. In the recreation area, a table and a couple of chairs are usually installed on such a rug.
If there is a sofa with chairs, then it is it that is installed on the rug, and the chairs are taken out of its edges.
Changing the space of the hall
The shape and size of the contemporary carpet in the living room directly affect the visual size of the room.
So with a very small space, you can expand it with the help of a voluminous large carpet without a pronounced pattern.
If you need to extend the living room, a large carpet will come to the rescue.
A small rug can help make a large area smaller and cozier. They usually repeat the outlines of unusual pieces of furniture.
This rug will be especially good if its color and pattern match the design of the upholstery of upholstered furniture. But with this choice, it turns out that with a change in furniture, the rug will remain irrelevant.
Carpet color features
Carpet color can perfectly complement and dilute many interior details.
For example, if you have very bright furniture, a rug with a calmer shade will do. It will make the combination calm and neatly cozy.
If the floor in the living room is very dark, cover it with a bright carpet with beautiful patterns.
