The most brilliant mirror ideas can brighten up minimalist spaces and tame maximalist rooms alike. It's all about choosing the perfect size, frame, shape and of course, much of the finished look will come from how you mirrors are displayed.

Modern buys will give off contemporary vibes while you can't beat an antique or vintage find from a flea market to add character to your living room, kitchen or bedroom space... A great way to enhance existing wall decor, not forgetting that mirrors come with many practical uses that go beyond checking out your (beautiful) reflection.

Mirror ideas to marvel at

Mirrors are both decorative and functional when it comes to interior design. They can help to bounce light around the room meaning that when well placed, mirrors can actually create the illusion of space in smaller settings. Not to mention if you've got any damage on the walls, it's nothing that you can't cover by hanging a mirror.

'A decorator’s secret weapon, mirrors are more than a practical object in which to check your own reflection,' says Belinda creative brand director,OKA .

'In the right hands, a beautiful mirror can be used to amplify light, add drama, create interesting reflections and frame views.'

1. Add brilliance to a hidden corner

(Image credit: John Lewis & Partners)

In a large living room space, you don't have to make your mirror the center of attention. Instead, move yours over into an otherwise hidden corner to add character. This will also encourage the eye to move across and better appreciate the rest of your interior design scheme.

Showing an appreciation of shapes and geometry, this Cade round mirror from John Lewis is styled with a diamond color blocked rug, square motif cushions and a gorgeous bulbous light fixture. And those green curtains are the perfect window treatment for a hotel feel.

2. Use multiple mirrors in a dark living room

If you've used a dark wall paint, you may have to work a little harder to allow light to come through. Don't be discouraged by deeper hues though – this can easily be remedied by lots of mirror ideas placed strategically around the room.

The combination of the black square-framed mirror and trio of round mini mirrors above the mantelpiece are the perfect antidote to dramatic paint shades.

'Mirrors have long been used by interior designers to subtly transform spaces through clever tricks of light and space,' says Andrew Tanner, design manager, Habitat .

'Placed adjacent or opposite windows, mirrors maximise luminosity, reflecting daylight around the room. Don’t be restricted to just one! Incorporating multiple designs balances a space, significantly brightening dark schemes and making intimate rooms appear larger.

3. Place your mirror near your windows

'To increase the amount of natural light cast around a room, simply place a mirror opposite or beside a window; no matter how gloomy the sky is outside, it will harness any available daylight. The bigger the mirror, the brighter and larger the space will feel,' says White.

4. Open up a green garden lounge with a round mirror

Bringing the outside in can be as easy as creating a green living room scheme. Sage green wall panels that look like your shed exterior is an excellent place to start and a forest green velvet sofa suits this space better than garden chairs we think you'd agree. And, this round mirror is the perfect touch to make this garden lounge go on forever.

Fresh lemons in a fruit bowl add a zesty feel, while foilage in a vase and framed floral art reinforce this greenhouse like atmosphere.

'Not merely functional, mirrors can be used as a decorative focal point in interiors, making a great alternative to wall art,' says Tanner.

'Round designs have been increasingly popular in the last few years, providing a contemporary look that has a softening effect on angular schemes. A key consideration when hanging a statement mirror is placement, make sure to take into account what will be reflected.'

5. Glam up your mantel with a gold framed mirror

Pink pampas, gold furniture, faux fur and a marble unit make this space fun and feminine – the perfect place to host. Make your mirror the star of the show by placing it center stage on your mantel.

'Over mantle mirrors make a great addition and look best when they are hung just above the mantle. Positioning a mirror too high means it could be reflecting the ceiling or a doorway which will ruin the effect.' says Debbie Leigh, design manager, ILIV .

Give it some company by styling the top of your fireplace as you would a 'shelfie' – display glass candles, ornaments and ceramic trinkets to show off your personality.

6. Use a full-length mirror horizontally

Traditionally standing tall, full-length mirrors are usually positioned in an upright, vertical position so you can see yourself in all your beauty, from head to toe. But, in this industrial boho living room by Dunelm, their Apartment Full Length Black Mirror has been flipped so that four (or more faces) can get a look in. Little kids will love to stand on the L-shaped sofa and pull faces at this reflective rectangular surface.

7. Place a mirror on a wallpapered wall

'Mirrors are a great way of reflecting light, colour, and pattern around the room to help brighten up any sized space. The right mirror placed in the perfect location can definitely change the atmosphere and feel of any home,' says Helen Ashmore, head of design at Laura Ashley .

'The beautiful Evie Mirror has a decorative clear glass frame, giving the illusion that the style is floating. This design feature means it works great over wallpaper, allowing the print to look as though it’s built into the design of the mirror, creating an even more stylish look.

'It is just right for brightening up any small space. Strategically place the Evie mirror in a smaller room with narrow windows or little natural lighting to bounce the restricted amount of light into another direction. The room will appear instantly larger than it actually is.'

8. Bring the outside in with a window-shaped mirror

A timeless design, black framed mirror ideas will never fall out of style. The curved top and rustic metal finish of this Brompton wall mirror by Cult Furniture will bring a touch of industrial chic to your modern living spaces.

To style, we'd hang it vertical on a wall, above your sofa, or for a laid-back look, prop it up and use a full length leaner mirror in your dressing room or bedroom.

Designed to look like a large window, the metal grid frame work is enchanting and gives the impression of space as it reflects and bounces light across the room.

9. Style a mirror in a shabby-chic maximalist scheme

Living rooms don't have to look coordinated: your space, your style after all! So don't feel inclined to match a three piece suite with a love chair if you don't want to.

Here a hodgepodge of motifs and materials creates a grannycore scheme that fashionable moms and those with eclectic interior style will love. Though the wallpaper pattern is different to the rug – familiar florals and themes we've seen before give this space an unusual cozyness.

Alongside a dusty pink fringed lampshade is a brass framed mirror idea that sits on top of a traditional fireplace. Its period look ties into the ornate detail of the hearth and the framed art on the wall.

10. Soften a cool living room with a rainbow mirror

Grey living rooms can often need a little 'something something' to make them stand out. Though this shade shan't go out of style for a while, mirror ideas are one way to make them stand out from the rest if you choose not to accent with color.

Child-friendly and cheerful, this rainbow arch-shaped mirror from Folk Furniture softens the cool grey shade of concrete paint. The Scandi-chic graphic cushions, on-trend greige sofa, tasselled throw and fluted detail footstool add interest and lots of texture.

The roaring twenties was all about, glitz, glamour, clinking glasses and having a good old time. So, in an era that was perfect for partying, you can be sure that the interiors were full of reflective surfaces and lots of marvellously metallic furniture.

The Art Deco-inspired Lyshia mirror by där lighting features a beautiful design with four squares surrounding the central round mirror.

Complete with foil detail, this striking decorative mirror that will add a warming touch to your living room. Alternatively, this'd look amazing in a teal bedroom too. Opt for a singular mirror or stack them as shown.

12. Choose a mirrored backsplash in the kitchen

You may be thinking: 'Why on earth would I include a mirror in my kitchen?' but it's actually a really functional tool. You don't want spinach in your teeth on a child-free date night after all, right?

This backsplash with a reflective finish is one genius way to go about adding mirror ideas in your kitchen without looking vain. It's also makes washing up more interesting if your basin is not directly in front of a window. Using the reflection, you can see if the kids are up to any mischief or talk to guests after dinner – even with your back turned.

Plus... prime position next to that gorgeous Morso modern fireplace idea ? Sign us up for drying duties!

13. Opt for mirrored furniture instead

If you're dealing with a small space where your walls are premium real estate, consider investing in mirrored furniture instead. Not just a glamorous fixture, they will have a secondary role of bouncing light around the room – giving the illusion of a larger space.

'In a bedroom, for instance, a mirror is the perfect piece of furniture to make the space feel lighter and more open – especially when placed above a mirrored chest of drawers. Reflect on that for a second,' says Olsson.

'It’s not just natural light that can be manipulated in this way, however; mirrors effectively emphasize the output from other light sources too. If you’re tasked with decorating a cavernous space or a dark corner, placing a mirror near a table lamp can make all the difference.'

A mirrored screen divider is also a great shout as a closet organization idea or pop-up dressing space for guests.

14. Go for a multi-purpose mirrored radiator

(Image credit: The Radiator Centre )

Life is full of little surprises, like dresses with pockets or finding dollars you didn't realize you had. So how about this 2-in-1 radiator and mirror idea that's great for cozying up with a cup of tea and book (or magazine) in your reading nook. Or, alternatively in the bedroom – especially during the colder months.

A full length mirror built into a stylish tubular radiator makes this Arcadia mirror radiator an asset in every room in your home.

15. Create a frameless display

Mirrors make the perfect addition to an on-trend gallery wall and can help give the appearance of a larger and lighter space – especially helpful if you're using a dark paint shade as the basis for your gallery wall.

This vintage-style room proves that aesthetic appeal and practicality can join hands to form a stylish yet functional gallery wall inspired space.

16. Lighten a dark hallway

Find a similar mirror at The French Bedroom Company

A dark hallway is always a good spot for a mirror as they make the ideal accessory to help when brightening a dark room. If you're a lover of vintage or period style, look for one with an ornate frame that will create a real impact on the decor of the hall. Here, a gold-framed mirror is matched with reflective wallpaper to add a brightening effect.

17. Create a display of mirror frames

For similar sunburst try eBay or Etsy

An accent wall devoted entirely to mirrors doesn't just brighten and enlarge a space visually; it also creates a visually striking focal point, and is effective at opening up a space.  This bedroom is the perfect example of one of our favorite mirror design ideas.

18. Mismatch mirrors for success

Source vintage mirrors from eBay or Etsy , or try Cox & Cox if you want to buy new

(Image credit: Ibens and Niels Ahlberg/inagency.dk)

We like this mirror idea if you have a collection of slightly mismatching, antique mirrors. The key to success? Don't position your mirrors too uniformly or too far apart, and avoid perfect symmetry – laying them out on the floor first can be the best way to get a feel of what works best where.

19. Position long mirrors horizontally

Mirror from Cuckcooland , for similar floral wall murals try Murals Wallpaper

Hanging mirrors horizontally on the narrowest wall of a room – at around head height – is ideal if you're trying to achieve the effect of a wider space. This design trick works particularly well if mirrors aren't perfectly aligned with furniture – an effect which also adds interest to a space.

Opt for a mirror with a slightly softer, rounded edge if you're designing a room with a Mid-century or vintage inspired feel.

20. Mix and match mirrors and pictures

Mirrors with softly rounded edges make the perfect addition to a Mid-century inspired space and are particularly desirable when designed as part of a picture-led  wall.

We love the brightening effect of pairing a mirror with this teal green wallpaper from Farrow & Ball .

If you're working with a warm-toned metal mirror, for example something that's copper or gold, consider this mirror idea and pair it with similarly sunny yellow and orange shades.

In addition to making a space more welcoming, research suggests this combination of warm, sunny tones has the ability to enhance the mood of a room.

22. Create a minimalist feature with a frameless mirror

Find a similar large scale, frameless mirror at Rough Old Glass

If you're looking for mirrors that will create a unique feature, but don't want to sacrifice your distinctly minimalist style, consider going frameless. In a luxury bathroom with a more sophisticated feel, antiqued glass is perfect for adding character.

23. Choose vintage frames for a rustic finish

Check out eBay or Etsy for similar vintage mirrors

Opting for vintage frames effectively complements the laid-back feel of minimalist or rustic living room schemes, adding subtle interest to a space and further enhancing the light and bright feel synonymous with this interior style.

24. Maximize the light-enhancing properties

If your priority is to design a space that feels larger and lighter than it really is, you need a large, round mirror in your life. Position it so that it can been seen on entry to a space effectively draws the eye and creates the feel of a larger and lighter space.

Opt for a model with a slim frame if you're a fan of understated, minimalist interiors and position above a similarly elegant console table for a hallway that feels spacious and welcoming to guests.

25. Create a focal point above the fireplace with mirrors

Positioning a statement mirror (or collection of mirrors) above a fireplace draws the eye, creating a focal point within a space and is one of our favorite mirror design ideas. The taller the mirror – or collection of mirrors – the greater the impression of a high ceiling in the room.

Styling a grey stone fireplace with antiqued silver mirrors and other glass accessories creates a strikingly subtle finish. The odd well-placed, house plant is a welcome addition to an otherwise cool toned, silvery-grey living room scheme.

If your interiors taste is more traditional, opt for this understated mirror idea as part of your scheme. Pairing a white frame with a white scheme is a particularly subtle approach that will effectively open up a small space.

Pair with an unfitted, freestanding unit and open shelving to create the perfect, welcoming separate mudroom or small foyer.

27. Source antique mirror-doors for a boho feel

DIY your own version of this mirror by sourcing a reclaimed door or shutter and mounting on a mirror

Stylishly complementing a boho inspired space, we love the idea of sourcing antique mirror-doors, which can be propped in a corner to enlarge a space. You could also DIY your own version of this mirror by sourcing a reclaimed door or shutter and mounting on a mirror.

If you fancy a DIY project, revamp an existing piece of furniture to give it a vintage look.

28.

Lean a large, antique-style mirror against a wall

If you're designing a space with a laid back, unfitted feel, leaning a large, antique-style mirror against a wall can be an effective way to display mirrors. It will expand the space instantly plus give a traditional vibe to any room.

29. Display a collection of small, ornate mirrors

Using a large, frameless mirror as a base, we love the idea of creating a display using a collection of small, ornate mirrors, as well as prints and other ornaments. This technique creates a stunningly intricate focal point, which is enhanced by the reflection from the large mirror.

30. Channel brightly decorated ceramic frames

Using ceramic plates to create a stylish wall display has been a popular trend over the past couple of years. With this trend mind, we like the idea of channeling the look with a display of patterned ceramic mirrors.

31. Get showy with a window mirror in the hallway

Brilliant in larger rooms and hallways, a window mirror is the best of both worlds: practical, so you can quickly check your lippy before you head out for the day, but also beautiful. Choose from wooden and metal versions for a stand-out piece with an industrial edge – and they work well as part of a collection of pieces, as you can see in this homeowner's maximalist abode.

32. Bring a luxury vibe into a bathroom

Lucky enough to have a couples bathroom? Make it count by placing two mirrors next to each other so you and your significant other can get ready in the morning – with no space-related arguments! Only one sink to share? The multiple mirror effect still works elsewhere in the house: try hanging two or three identical mirrors in a line in your hallway or dining room.

Psst – this interior designer's home has plenty of other decorating ideas to steal, too.

There are so many creative designs out there that it'd be rude not to experiment with something a bit more 'out there'. If you're looking for an investment piece, push the boat out and go for an unusual mirror like this retro bubble design. Hexagonal, octagonal, diamond, square: the mirror design world's your oyster if you're willing to have a look around.

34. Go A-list with a bespoke dressing room mirror

Whether you've got a walk-in closet or just want to spruce up an existing wardrobe, you can't beat bespoke mirror ideas for their made-to-measure fit.

'When designing a dressing room, it’s important to think about lighting and light-reflecting surfaces to make a windowless or smaller room come to life, making it a beautiful place to spend time in,' says Philipp Nagel, Director of Neatsmith .

'Including warm recessed LEDs, bespoke mirrored door designs and decorative glass finishes helps to maximize light and a sense of space within a walk-in wardrobe or dressing room.

How can I incorporate mirrors into my home?

'70’s inspired interiors are back with a bang and as we move towards the party season consider adding some much needed celebratory glam into your home with gleaming mirrored furniture,' says Nadia McCowan-Hill, resident style advisor, Wayfair .

'This retro revival brings a grown-up luxe touch to your interior style and has more to it than aesthetics alone. Mirrored side tables and cabinets are great for those smaller spaces as they bounce light around the room.'

'Pair them with bright vases, filled with rich winter blooms that can be wonderfully reflected in the mirrored surface. '

'Refresh this trend with a contemporary twist by opting for clean designs set in brass frames, or go for something more decorative with ornate furniture with a bevelled finish.'

How do you display mirrors?

'Hanging a mirror just a few inches above the mantle keeps it at a useable height and helps to reflect decorative items stood in front of it. Soft furnishings are the perfect way to add country style comfort to a room without having to completely redecorate.' says Leigh.

No house is complete without gallery wall ideas nowadays, whether that's in the bedroom, living room, hallway or every single room. One of the most game-changing wall decor ideas around, displaying artwork, photographs, and prints together in unison is the perfect way to add interest to a bland or basic-looking space.

These ideas for gallery walls will inspire you to fill any blank canvas, big or small, with life. And, by injecting a little of your personality into your living room ideas, you'll see your entire decor scheme come together in harmony.

The most exciting thing about this project is that no gallery wall is the same and that you can get as creative as you'd like, even (if not especially) if you're on a budget, or a total novice when it comes to getting crafty.

If you're in a rental and worried about the damage caused to walls – relax. Because we've nailed it with nail-free methods to make a gallery. From shelves to peg rails and adhesive ideas that peel off without defacing your foundations, we've got your walls covered... literally.

1. Add a tasteful selection to the dining room

Want to serve up some style alongside your tasty dishes? You need a gallery wall idea. It's the perfect way to start the conversation when you're hosting a dinner party or want to create a dynamic atmosphere at mealtime.

This is one way to add big energy to a small dining room idea and maximize the snug space you have. As food for thought, why not create a culinary theme? Lemons are great for a Tuscan-inspired scheme, or you can pay homage to Andy Warhol by popping a Campbell's soup print on the wall to relish all the retro vibes.

2. Go for abstract art

Art doesn't have to be perfect portraits of recognizable scenes or people. So if you prefer organic lines and shapes or 'proper art' is too 'neat', go about your gallery wall by introducing brush strokes and paint splatters for a fun and unfussy look.

We love the way the line art on the walls, scatter cushions and statement rug are all different, but work well together. You might also be surprised to know that all of these items are available from Habitat so you can create a designer scheme by heading online or shopping in your local Sainsbury's supermarket.

In similar fashion, art isn't all about paint or pattern either. So make sure your guests get the message with some textual prints. This is such a fun way to inject some interior personality and you can be candid with cheeky words, or cultured with film or book quotes.

Oliver Bonas is where it's at for only the eclectic executions and we love what they've done with this modern fireplace idea. If you want to know how to decorate a  mantel like a pro, we've got some inspiration to fire up the creativity.

4. Build a gallery wall with ceramics

Hanging plates is an elegant way to introduce color, pattern, and texture to your scheme, so why hide away your beautiful tableware in a cupboard? Hang them using these cheap plate hangers we found on Amazon (from Hillman) .

Alternatively, if you don't want to go down this route, line them up on shelves instead for an easily updatable display. This shelving idea obviously works if you already have an existing ledge, but if you want a quick and easy introduction to DIY, learn how to put up a shelf.

'A gallery wall is something that instantly adds style and character to your home, but all that hanging can be a time-consuming job,' says Johanna Constantinou, brand and communications director at Tapi .

'Instead, why not hang up a shelf or ledge and add your favorite prints, photos or accessories to it? This is a great way of adding your own personality to your home. Just remember when you move out to fill in any holes if needed.'

5. Overhaul your hallway

Check out this gallery wall by Homesense which uses Succulent-printed plates and a biophilic display in the hallway.

If you've invested in a console table for your entryway – push this against the wall and display framed art on top for an 'off-the-wall' idea, as one way to decorate a console table and add extra dimension.

6. Mix artwork and paintings for a unique gallery wall

All prints, Desenio

If you have a collection of much-loved art, family photos or favorite postcards, grouping them together in a gallery wall creates an authentic and bespoke display.

If symmetry is your thing, measure them carefully before hanging to get even spacing. Alternatively, for a more laid-back approach, arrange your pieces on the floor prior to picking up your hammer.

Desenio has a fab service on their website which helps you plan the layout of your gallery wall and choose frames and prints to suit your space. So with the power of technology, you can bring your living room wall ideas to life, before you decide how to hang pictures.

7. Make it dark and eclectic

This artist's eclectic gallery wall transformed a dull and standard-looking canvas into one full of character and moody charm.

Proving that mixed media will add depth and create a statement, especially if you're searching for dramatic ideas for black living rooms.

8. Add reflective elements

This idea for the hallway pops because of the gorgeous reflective elements present in this cool, mini-gallery space. Modern, bold, and such a great way to add character to a property. By choosing the best wallpapers and a bold mirror, you too can achieve this look quite easily.

Want to be the greatest of them all? Learn how to hang a mirror with ease.

9. Use fairy lights to display your photos

Brighten up an area in your home for a party or just for a fun change by using festoon and string lights. These living room wall lighting ideas from Lights4Fun are a great way to add a glow to dark wall space, and with options to clip on photos, and postcards, it’s easy to update this pretty feature with a new display – snap up some mini wooden pegs , or mini metal alligator clips  – both available on Amazon.

Now you don't have to be David Bailey to take photos. So if you want a regular change-up of your photographs, why not treat yourself to an instant camera while you're on Amazon. Retro decor has had a resurgence, so that's one way to shake up your gallery wall ideas (like a Polaroid picture).

10. Layer up prints on a picture ledge

Practical and inexpensive, this type of shelving is a great base for creating your very own striking art displays.

Use a single shelf or group two or more together, then dress with vases, pictures, books or candlesticks. The beauty of this look is that you can change your arrangement as the mood takes you.

Learning how to install a floating shelf is super a simple DIY project and when you're not using it for a gallery wall idea, it's a great storage space for other items. Create a similar look to the one pictured with Sydney 36" W X 6" D floating shelves from Wayfair .

11. Create a living wall

Houseplants are back on trend, and not only do they look good, but the best indoor plants can also do wonders for your health and well-being, too.

Take full advantage of the benefits of houseplants by adding some living, breathing greenery instantly gives a fresh feeling to any space and provides a vibrant splash of color, especially in this green on green living room idea.

No excuses if you're not green-fingered either. You can either learn how to how to care for houseplants (spoiler: remember to water them) or fake the look with faux foliage.

12. Add texture and interest with exotic finds

Texture isn’t just for soft furnishings – as this scheme shows. Smooth walls can look great punctuated with tactile objects displayed as a gallery wall, particularly if you're working with a white canvas.

Experiment with everything from quirky hats or feather placemats to African baskets or woven discs; grouped over a piece of furniture, they make a unique statement. Anthropologie is the OG for fringed baskets and rattan wall hangings and we've spotted the small banana fiber and raffia palm decor on their site, but be quick before they sell out.

13. Create a quirky display for children's rooms

(Image credit: Hurn and Hurn )

Keep your little ones engaged by hanging fun items in their bedrooms for them to look at, touch and feel. As a cute nursery idea, add furry animal heads for a quirky take on a gallery wall, or turn toys into art by nestling them in wall-hung baskets or on shelves.

Shop these animal heads and hooks from Fiona Walker available at Hurn & Hurn

14. Enhance space with a mirror gallery wall

For similar mirrors, try Rough Old Glass or Cult Furniture

A classic interior design trick for making a small room look bigger is to use mirrors as art. They bounce light around a room and give the impression of more space. Hang a single large one as a statement piece or mass several different shaped mirror ideas together for extra interest.

15. Go for a classic look with peg rails

Originally used for hanging chairs, Shaker-style peg rails are no longer just great kitchen storage ideas and are often found in kitchens for their effortless and classic look. As they can easily blend into most decorative schemes, they make a good addition to almost anywhere in the house.

Choose natural wood or a painted finish and adorn with anything from coats, bags, scarfs and hats to tools, ornaments or a string of fairy lights.

For a similar peg rail, try painting this wood wall mount 6-peg coat rack from the iDesign store on Amazon . Create a cohesive look by using a complimentary shade or make a statement with a bold hue. Try Annie Sloan or Frenchic for a chalky finish or go super sleek with a signature Farrow and Ball color.

16. Get creative with lighting

(Image credit: Curiousa & CCuriousa & Curiousurious)

For a really quirky take on a gallery wall, introduce some interesting wall lights.

These wall lights from Curiousa & Curiousa make a bold statement but their resemblance to wall plates keeps the overall look from being too wacky – we love the idea of working them into a Mid-century modern inspired space.

Incorporating a gallery wall into your room design is the easiest way to break up an all-white scheme, creating a space with greater depth and interest. Plus, white really is the perfect blank canvas to display your art on.

We love the pairing of this white living room with bold bright accents in the sculptures on the walls. Love this space? Take a tour of the rest of the gorgeous Georgian home, it's owned by interior writer, author, and content creator, Lisa Dawson so you know it's going to be impeccable.

17. Pick a neutral color scheme for your gallery wall

(Image credit: Iben and Niels Ahlberg/inagency.dk)

If you want to create a gallery wall that has a more cohesive look, pick a clear color scheme. We love the look of this neutral gallery wall, the colors are simple but there are plenty of different textures and materials thrown in to add interest. This gallery wall idea would work particularly well in a smaller space, say a hallway or a landing, because the limited, neutral color scheme won't overwhelm the space.

Find similar rustic frames on Wayfair , Etsy or eBay . Don't be afraid to mix and match frames for a chintzy aesthetic. This beautiful Cophenagen apartment is full of vintage finds.

18. Keep it chic and cohesive

These clear glass frames from Cox and Cox work brilliantly together as although they are different shapes and mostly different sizes, they are still all in unity with the same dainty frame color and material. This would be perfect as a boho bedroom idea, lounge or even awkward corridor setting, especially if you choose botanical pictures or abstract scenes for the photo itself.

If you're stateside, these JuxYes hanging picture frames on Amazon are a budget-friendly dupe, so you can design your gallery wall ideas wherever you are in the world.

19. Let it flow

Boxy and artistic cushions veritably draws this gallery's design features down from the wall and onto the bed for a thoughtful finish. Even the paint color for the living room has been considered, as sage green complements and runs through some of the designs.

Serena & Lily have some of the best scatter cushions with classic designs that'll blend into the rest of your scheme.

20. Make a small gallery wall pop with paint

Want a quick way to make a picture wall really stand out? This gallery wall idea will transform a room in just a couple of hours: simply use paint to create a colored wall panel idea as a backdrop to give your favorite artwork some added impact.

It takes nothing more than some leftover paint, a roller, and masking tape, and is the perfect way to freshen up a room in an afternoon. Just create your 'frame' using masking tape and a ruler and then get painting. Leave it to dry, remove the tape and then hang your gallery wall.

21. Match colors within artwork to create a cohesive feel

Picking artwork with a common color theme will create a cohesive look. This doesn't just work for a picture wall – choosing pieces for your wall, whether pictures or other artistic displays with similar colors will help knit the scheme together. Magenta pink will always make the boys (and girls) wink...

22. Go supersize with posters

Bump up your gallery wall even in a small living room space by maxing out on the size of your prints and frames. Lessen the wall space between the frames for a heightened visual impact and then keep your color scheme simple, so that the hues and other design details flow seamlessly with the rest of the room.

We love the way that Ikea have put together this indigo blue living room idea, with one of their best sofas to create a cozy aesthetic.

23. Make a hat gallery wall

'Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home)' is a song sung by Motown legend Marvin Gaye, but now the lyric speaks true in our interior schemes.

Hats always seem to be the hardest accessory to properly store, so hang them in a pleasing way. Then whenever you want to wear a hat, they're within easy reach. Just be sure to replace the hat when you're done wearing it. Hang them with nails or hooks, or find a wall fixture designed just for hanging your hats and see how this is one of the most affordable gallery wall ideas going.

H&M always seems to have cool head accessories, so if you don't have any floppy sunhats, head to Hennes & Mauritz for some Swedish style.

24. Show off favorite photos and memories

While selecting a mix of art and prints, don't forget to add your own personal spin with your own photos. Showcase family members, favorite vacation photos, or even your favorite Instagram grid photos. Interior decorator Kylie M  created this gallery wall using  Mixtiles in her breakfast nook.

Mixtiles (available on Amazon) make it easy and affordable to print out your favorite photos into framed pieces of various sizing. Even better: the photos use a reusable adhesive, so you can rearrange frames around as you please, with no worry of damaging walls.

25. Create a collage

Walls covered with aesthetic, mood board type images have taken over social media, especially TikTok in the form of less than perfect collages. You can gather from magazines and print your own images, or head straight to sites like Etsy or other independent creators who have created prints ready for the mass, like Tezza , who offer various kits around different aesthetics.

IZOOMI also have a gorgeous peach and teal collage kit on Amazon which is perfect for even the fussiest adolescents looking for cool teenage girl bedroom ideas.

26. Play with texture

A gallery wall isn't just paintings and art prints. It's an amalgamation of pieces that work together cohesively. Sprinkle in different mediums like tapestries or mixed media work for texture, interest, and dimension.

27. Try a floor-to-ceiling gallery wall

(Image credit: Laura Mitchell Interior Design)

While many gallery walls are placed above a focal point like a sofa or a sideboard, why not dedicated an entire wall to your gallery. We're talking about a display that spreads itself from floor to ceiling. Try the idea out on a smaller wall, like on a stairway landing or room dividing wall, or go full force and cover an empty wall from top to bottom with curated sorts.

You can keep uniform frames and color palettes complimentary for a polished look (like Laura Mitchell Interior Design ) has done, or mix and match for a design as varied as the items you love to collect.

28.

Use the power of three

It works in writing and it sure makes a statement when hanging a gallery wall too. Choose three core colors that run through each piece of art or framed photograph and you'll create a cool, coherent look.

Nod to colors present in the surrounding space for bonus decor points. This red, white, and black trio work well to create a designer feel in this bedroom.

29. Create a view

Your gallery wall should be full of what brings you joy and while this design feature will ignite happiness wherever it may be in your home, consider building yours out at the foot of your bed or in front of a lounging area to create the perfect view for all times of day. Include small and simple drawings that will make you feel good about your space on all the levels.

This modern living room bends all the rules with OSB plywood flooring and a graffiti print to create an edgy and industrial atmosphere.

'A top tip when using dark colors on the walls is to keep a sense of light and space by hanging eye-catching art works in elaborate frames.' says Elaine Penhaul, interiors expert and founder of award-winning, national home staging company, Lemon and Lime Interiors

'If you’re feeling unsure about taking the plunge and re-decorating, a great way to create this look is by using dramatic print rugs or oversized art pieces.'

What should be included in a gallery wall?

There are no rules or dos and don'ts with a gallery wall, but it is the perfect space to show off your favorite things. Be that art and vintage photo frames, maps or other trinkets, – who'd have thought their righteous home would be on the wall? Co-founder and seasoned art expert, Elinor Olisa Barikor, seasoned art expert and co-founder of DegreeArt.com shares her thoughts and tips on how to introduce art into your home and into your gallery walls.

She says, 'The most important thing to consider when you start collecting art for your home is if the artwork makes you happy! You can bring your interiors to life by adding everything from paintings, to limited edition prints, to hand finished and artist-designed accessories,'

'Once you start collecting, it is hard to stop and you’ll find yourself discovering new places in your home to display works that you never knew existed - from wall art created by a recent graduate, to sculpture placed on your mantlepiece or even a new cushion designed by an artist – art doesn’t need to be confined to a particular spot on your wall, incorporating art into your home really does create a homely, curated, happy space for you and your family.

Are gallery walls a thing?

Yes, 100 per cent they're still en vogue, and you shouldn't just think of them as a stylish scheme while you're living in your home, as they can also help to sell it too.

'Art can be the guiding framework of a room, assisting the overall layout for placing furniture and maximizing the space available. It more than just an aesthetic – it’s about understanding people’s behaviors and evoking an emotion in the potential buyer – that’s what sells.' says Penhaul.

'Larger more painterly pieces give proportion and scale to a room, while smaller framed images and prints pull together to form an interesting gallery wall. This can lengthen the room in either direction, drawing the eye to a cluster of exciting images.'

What are the dos and don'ts of a gallery wall?

'When choosing art, you could consider a range of details, including your home décor, hobbies and interests, and any memories you want to capture,' says Amy Harrison, brand influencer and relationship manager, Castle Fine Art .

'You could also think about how you want the art to make you feel: do you want to remember fast-paced nights in the city, or feel tranquil in your living space?'

'If you're feeling overwhelmed by the choice available, it may be time to talk to an art consultant. As it's their job to have their finger on the pulse, they are best placed to talk you through the different finishes and styles, and help you to discover emerging contemporary artists or international, diverse, and indigenous artists whose work may not be in the limelight.'

Gallery wall ideas and tips from the experts

Catharina Björkman, Scandi lifestyle expert at Contura says, 'If your art or frames are not working in a particular space or room, simply move them around to see if they would be better placed in a different location.'

'It can take time for items to look at home in a new spot, so resist the urge to switch them straight back if you are unsure at first. If you have a gallery wall, switching around your prints, adding more, or even taking some away is an inexpensive way to completely refresh your wall – it will bring you joy each time you see it in all its glory. '

For example, you could try a classic living room corner idea or experiment with other ideas for living room layouts that differ from the norm.

How to hang children's drawings in the living room, should the posters be the same size and what is the advantage of composing from photos on the shelf - we tell you how to decorate the interior with pictures

Many home owners and apartments would like to turn one of the walls in the living room or dining room into a real art gallery. But because of the fear of hanging something wrong, they are often limited to one lonely frame. Posters, oil and watercolor paintings, children's drawings, clippings from vintage magazines - the choice of images is huge. How to combine them into a harmonious and stylish composition, we tell today.

1. Determining the correct arrangement of pictures

Before hanging pictures or posters, you need to determine the height and size of the composition. You should not place objects too high - otherwise they will be uncomfortable to look at. Stand opposite places where a picture, photograph or panel will eventually hang. Mark the level where the naturally thrown glance rests (not raising and not lowering the head). From the bottom edge of the canvas, mentally step back 2–3 cm . It is this part of the image that should be at the marked level. If the ceilings are low, then you need to retreat 6-7 cm from the bottom edge of the blade.

As for the size of the composition, be guided by the parameters of the sofa, table, bed, over which it is located. The optimal width of a picture or group of images is 75–90% of the width of the furniture.

2. Betting on symmetry

The simplest solution is to decorate the wall with one picture. But with a whole series of images, things are somewhat more complicated. If you want to get a spectacular result with minimal effort, bet on symmetrical hanging of pictures. Mentally draw a line in the center of the wall and place one or two frames vertically on it. On both sides of them at the same distance, hang the rest of the objects. It's impossible to go wrong here.

3. We have pictures of the same size

If you have several rectangular or square pictures of the same size, you are lucky. Harmoniously arranging such a composition will not be difficult. Pictures of the same size can be placed in one row at an equal distance from each other. But much more interesting when they hang at different levels. Such compositions look especially stylish with thematic cards or photographs.

4. Select the central object

For a more harmonious composition of posters or photos, choose the largest image as the centerpiece. Hang it on the side or in the center of the group. Place a few smaller paintings around. To balance the composition, use a baguette or frames of the same thickness or similar design.

5. Placing the round element

The easiest way is to beautifully hang a group of rectangular and square elements. What about, for example, a stylish mirror, round frame or other non-standard object? The easiest way is to place it in the center of the composition and surround it with smaller images. Keep in mind that in this case you cannot use frames of the same or larger size than the central element.

6. Think outside the box

Try to create something unconventional and unusual, experiment with the size and shape of the composition. Use a combination of photographs, drawings, art objects and souvenirs. Place them in the shape of a triangle, cloud or heart - let the decorative composition set the mood for the entire interior.

7. Arranging paintings on a shelf

If you don't want to spoil the wall decoration with extra holes, but you want to create a stylish composition of paintings and posters, use a long narrow shelf for this purpose, or maybe several. Arrange the largest works first - they will become the basis. Place smaller frames or small decorative items in front of them. Make sure that the images are of different sizes and do not cover each other.

8. Decorate the wall along the stairs

There are several ways to hang pictures along the stairway. The easiest is to place several images of different sizes parallel to the floor line. However, in this case, there is a chance that one of the lower corners of the composition will remain empty. To avoid this, start hanging the frames from the top point - slightly lowering each next picture.
