Gazebos make a great backyard retreat at any time of day but they really come into their own at night when dressed up with lights. Gazebo lighting ideas can create an evening space that's perfect for entertaining, a special dinner or simply a stunning way to show off the backyard at night.

Gazebos look especially welcoming when the lights are switched on at dusk and it's time for them to take center stage in the night-time garden. A well-lit gazebo works as an architectural focal point at night, too. The freestanding, open structure is ideal for outdoor lighting ideas, especially if it features a domed roof that’s supported by pillars or columns as this creates opportunities for a combination of gazebo lighting ideas.

There are also temporary pop-up fabric gazebo structures that provide a useful space for socializing at night, can be positioned wherever you want them and can also be beautifully decorated with lights.

Gazebo lighting ideas

Which gazebo lighting style will you choose? From sparkling string lights and glowing festoons to vintage style chandeliers and modern built-in LED strip lights there's plenty of choice for your backyard lighting ideas.

1. Use pretty string lights for a magical vibe

If you're hosting a garden party the best place to start with lights is up high. Span strings of sparkling outdoor string lighting ideas above your entertaining space for maximum impact. Choose string lights if you're covering bigger areas as they're lightweight, come in connectable designs and are easy to work with as well as being affordable.

'String lights are such a great way to light up your gazebo,' says Lights4Fun 's creative manager Lucy Kirk. 'To create the ultimate display, use multiple sets of warm white connectable fairy lights so you can swag the fairy lights back and forth underneath the roof of your gazebo for the perfect fairy light canopy. This will create a cozy ambience throughout your space.'

Faux candles in lanterns are directional and superb for creating ambience when dotted around or grouped together in a gazebo for maximum effect. 'By using various lighting options, you create a designer look with romantic overtones while avoiding harsh lighting,' says interior designer Sanel Konyar of Interior Collection .

2. Go Regency-style formal with a chandelier

Chandeliers aren’t just for the dining room. They can be hung in a variety of outdoor locations to add a touch of luxury when the sun goes down. Make a bold statement and hang a chandelier from the roof of your gazebo, choosing a style of light that best complements the space.

Whether electric or solar-lit, an elegant chandelier over the table is one of those gazebo lighting ideas that help switch up the space for an al fresco dinner. A vintage-style chandelier with teardrop crystals adds glimmer and shine for a more formal vibe that helps to create a sense of occasion.

A vintage-style chandelier creates an air of elegance for your patio gazebo. If fitting the gazebo with dedicated electricity seems like too much hassle, remove all the wiring and sockets from an old chandelier and turn it into a battery-run chandelier by replacing the lights with faux tealights. Layer up the look with similar candles as part of the tablescaping.

3. Choose festoon lights for an old school feel

Festoon lights have a traditional feel with their big bulbs. The shapely glass globes come in warm whites or multi-colors. It's a look that's big right now, with festoon lights a firm favorite when it comes to garden parties. They are also one of the best gazebo lighting ideas, adding a subtle look that's not too harsh.

'Lights that are too bright for a gazebo can ruin the mood at night-time, which is where festoon lights come into play,' says Sam Richards of Gazeboshop . 'For pop-up gazebos, outdoor festoon lights can be attached along the frame and used to build a warm atmosphere, particularly when partnered with strip lights or lanterns. '

The latest styles of festoon lights combine energy efficient LEDs with more practical translucent plastic cases, designed to perfectly imitate the nostalgic look of the traditional version, while being virtually unbreakable.

4. Turn your gazebo into a backyard focal point

(Image credit: FOTOGRAFIA INC/Getty Images )

As well as lighting ideas for a gazebo within the space itself it's a great idea to light it up so it glows when seen from a distance too. Whether it's a hexagonal timber gazebo or a more stark modern style, it will look enchanting at night with the right lighting and become a real focal point in the backyard. This is a great example of using lighting to illuminate a specific feature.

Think about how best to light the gazebo with a wash of light picking out key elements around it, such as backlighting the planting and gently illuminating the steps. Use mirroring in the foreground to pick out these details then layer up the lighting effect in the gazebo. Letting your lights meet at a centered fixture will add pleasing symmetry to your space too.

Treat the outdoors like the indoors by using a combination of decorative lanterns and free-standing floor lamps to create a blended area that’s perfect for a relaxed atmosphere. Overhanging floor lamps add a real design element. Choose one that's height adjustable and preferably with dual effects so you can choose direct down-light or diffused up-light.

'Whether you have a permanent or pop-up gazebo, lighting your garden structure will allow you to make the most of your outdoor space at night,' says Reilly Gray of SUNS Lifestyle . 'Just like in your interiors, you will want to create a layered lighting scheme in your outdoor structure as well. This will help create ambience while ensuring there's enough lighting for socializing or relaxing. Freestanding lamps and lanterns that are solar-powered and rechargeable are great as they can be moved around easily, offering a lot more flexibility and the option of directional lighting. '

Lighting styles like this are ideal for a luxe fixed gazebo style for your terrace. Choose a style with flexible shutters in the roof and side screens. That way you can use it year round at night to make the most of your gazebo.

6. Fix up a gazebo cottagecore style

If you love the idea of a nostalgic fairy tale gazebo with vintage style prints and lots of freshly picked flowers you'll be wanting lighting ideas for a gazebo that match this cottagecore aesthetic. Your go-to choice should be paper lanterns to get the look.

Dressing up your gazebo with pretty paper lanterns is one of the easiest ways to create an entertaining space for a summer garden party.

Made of thin paper covering a wire framework, paper lanterns come in a range of designs, colors and sizes. Illuminated from the inside, they provide a soft glow that adds to the magic. It's best to use LED lights or battery powered bulbs with paper lanterns, as they don’t give off heat in the same way that incandescent bulbs do.

7. Try a gazebo with integrated glow

If you're looking for a stylish freestanding gazebo for your backyard hosting choose one with remote-controlled LED mood lighting strips around the perimeter of the roof. It's an automatic, hassle-free option that adds instant glow. The LED strips come in multi-colored or white options, and are easily adjusted with a remote control.

You can also set the lights to automatically change color periodically (great for parties!) or keep them one color. The lights are dimmable according to your desired brightness requirements and can be changed to set the mood for the occasion. Gazebo lighting like this requires an electricity socket for the lights to be activated.

8. Illuminate a gazebo with hanging lights

Outdoor hanging lights including garden lanterns and pendant lights come in a huge range of styles, finishes and colors so can be used in gazebos to create just about any vibe you like. They are great clustered together to form a statement look.

Some styles plug into an electricity supply, but if you’re unable to connect your outdoor lamps to a power source, it doesn’t mean you have to miss out. Instead, why not pick one of the many battery-powered pendant lamps? Another option is solar garden lighting ideas that automatically turn on at dusk and off at dawn as no power source is required.

First and foremost, the gazebo structure you are suspending the lighting from needs to be able to take the weight of the light fitting itself, especially if you're planning a look like this one where you hang multiple lights together. Then all you need to do is determine the best design to accentuate your gazebo's charms.

9. Pick a subtle and sophisticated look

(Image credit: Johner Images/Alamy Stock Photo)

If you're looking to decorate your outdoor dining space for a special al fresco meal often a few strands of string lights is all that's needed to give things a lift. Perhaps a discreet touch of sparkle rather than full-on spotlights is more your thing anyway.

String lights are one of the best lighting ideas for a gazebo if you want to generate a romantic, ethereal atmosphere. These tiny LED lights are best added to the gazebo by wrapping them around the overhead beams.

'Using string lights is one of the best ways to add a romantic and atmospheric feel to your night-time entertaining,' says interior designer Sanel Konyar. 'Choosing a solar light design makes them practical and economical, especially where electricity sources are limited.'

If you really want to elevate your look above every other gazebo on the block make sure you choose lighting ideas that create a real sense of occasion. And if you're going to do it, do it well.

If you're planning to install a chandelier in your gazebo that's wired into an electrical supply make sure you buy one that is suitable. Choose a chandelier made of weather resistant material, and safety approved for outdoor use.

Your outdoor chandelier should come with a sealed circuit to avoid moisture affecting the fittings. It should have a rubber coated switch and heavy duty cord. Once you've ticked off these you're ready to start hanging your chandelier.

Check the roof of your gazebo will carry the weight. Install a sturdy metal hook into the roof of your gazebo so the chandelier can be hung securely. Make sure each wire  is the same length so the chandelier hangs evenly. For chandeliers hung in the center of gazebos, the lowest point should be about seven feet from the ground to reduce the risk of taller guests bumping their heads!

How do you hang string lights on a gazebo?

'The most difficult part of hanging string lights is ensuring the wire is free of knots and that the lights are spaced evenly,' says Sam Richards of Gazeboshop. Here are his suggestions on the easiest way to hang a string of lights for successful gazebo lighting ideas:

  1. Measure the path the lights will follow along the structure of the gazebo and check you have enough.
  2. Choose a pattern that will mean your lights will be evenly spaced.
  3. Untangle your lights.
  4. Choose your hanging method of choice. You may use a staple gun to hang your lights, hooks or Blu-Tack. If you do choose to staple your lights, ensure the staple does not go through the wire!
  5. Start hanging from the furthest point and work your way in, this way you won't have spare lights left over at the end.
  6. Check your lights are secure and switch on!

How do you use lanterns to light a gazebo?

If you want to find out how to use lanterns to light a gazebo remember this simple fact: you can never have enough! Add them to your dining table, side tables and the floor to layer up a look and create a welcoming mood.

'Lanterns are a great addition to outdoor spaces and in particular for gazebos as they help to define the edges of the space, much as a wall light would do indoors,' says Juliette Thomas of Juliettes Interiors . 'Just because you’re not inside, it doesn’t mean you don’t need to accessorize your space.

'Cozy it up with lots of lanterns and decorative pieces to create a zoned space that feels both intimate and welcoming. Scatter lanterns around to light up areas such as the entrance to the gazebo, which need to be seen, or group them together to create a focal point.'

How to make beautiful garden gazebo lighting

A light and cozy gazebo can become the most favorite pastime for all family members. To use it at any time of the day, regardless of natural light, it is necessary to consider an artificial lighting scheme for building.

About what kind of lighting is better to use in the gazebo and what requirements for it must be observed, we will tell in this article.

What kind of lighting is there

General

General light is the foundation of any lighting system. It evenly floods the space, making it comfortable and safe in the dark. However, such light cannot always reach remote or hard-to-reach areas of the room. In addition, its intensity is often lacking in some areas: for example, where you like to read or do needlework.

Ceiling lights are usually used for general lighting. It can be chandeliers, pendants, overhead appliances or recessed lighting.

Single lamps are fixed in the central part of the gazebo ceiling. Embedded appliances are placed on the ceiling with a certain step: so that the lighting is uniform, without dark areas and intensity drops.

Local

Local or spot lighting is needed where general lighting alone is not enough. In the gazebo, this can be a dining area, a seating area, a barbecue area.

Usually spotlights give a directional light. The light flux from them is not scattered in the surrounding space, but is concentrated in a certain direction. For many models of fixtures, this direction can be changed at your discretion. With such devices, you can easily adjust the lighting to suit your needs.

Local lighting is organized using wall sconces, pendant lamps, spotlights, floor lamps. In gazebos with a barbecue area, you can also use built-in lamps with rotary light sources.

Decorative

This type of lighting performs only the function of decorating the space. Decorative light helps to create an atmosphere of comfort and tranquility in the gazebo and next to it. With its help, you can transform the place of rest for a family holiday, a romantic date or a party with friends.

A variety of garlands, light figures, LED strip, Chinese lanterns are used to organize decorative lighting. There are simply no strict rules here, everything that you and your loved ones will like is acceptable.

Choosing places for lamps in the gazebo

In order to create an effective and aesthetic lighting scheme for the gazebo, it is necessary to take into account the design and other features of the building itself.

Hangers must be selected taking into account the height of the ceiling in the gazebo: after installing the lamp from its lower edge to the floor, there must be a free space of at least 2.1 m high so that no one can accidentally touch it.

If pendant lamps are located above the table, then from their edge to the table top you need to maintain a distance of 80-90 cm.

As an alternative to classic lamps, the main source of light in the gazebo can be LED strip. It is fixed along the perimeter of the ceiling (for example, on a ceiling cornice or ceiling beams). Such lighting visually raises the roof of the building, giving the impression that it is floating in the air.

In a small gazebo, you can limit yourself to only general lighting, and for spacious rooms, at least 1-2 additional local lamps should be provided. It can be, for example, a wall sconce or floor lamp next to your favorite reading chair or a hanging lamp in the cooking area.

Decorative lamps can decorate both the facade of the gazebo and its interior design. An open building will look very elegant and festive if the space between its vertical supports is closed with a curtain garland. In a closed gazebo, you can place a pair of Chinese lanterns at the entrance or next to the fireplace. Classic garlands will look good fixed around the perimeter of the ceiling.

Specifications for lighting systems

Dust and moisture protection level

This indicator determines the possibility of using luminaires in open air conditions. The level of protection from negative environmental factors is indicated by the IP index. The higher it is, the more difficult operating conditions the lamps can withstand.

For outdoor gazebos, choose lighting devices with an IP index of at least 65. Even heavy rains and prolonged high humidity are not afraid of such lamps.

Ordinary room lamps can also be used in a closed gazebo, provided that the interior of the building is reliably protected from the negative effects of natural factors.

Lamp type

LED lamps are the best choice for illuminating the garden arbor. They have a good glow quality, do not heat up during operation, are economical and have a long service life. And LEDs can have a variety of shades of glow. Using colored bulbs, you can easily change the lighting scenarios in the gazebo for different situations and events. The disadvantage of diode light sources is their relatively high cost compared to other types of lamps.

In closed gazebos, both incandescent and fluorescent lamps can be used for lighting. They are cheaper than LED lamps, but they have serious drawbacks.

Incandescent lamps get hot during use and can easily start a fire, especially in wooden buildings. Fluorescent lamps contain mercury hazardous to human health. They must be handled very carefully, the slightest damage to the flask can lead to mercury vapor entering the air.

It is not recommended to use halogen bulbs to light the gazebo. They become hot during operation, and their flasks must not be touched and must be carefully protected from moisture. Any slight contamination or a drop of water on the glass can cause the flask to break when turned on.

Brightness and temperature of light

It is necessary to select lamps by power, taking into account the type of arbor. In open buildings, the light scatters more strongly, since it simply has nothing to reflect from, therefore, in such arbors, light sources of greater power should be used than in buildings of a closed type. Install 75 watt bulbs in the fixtures. They give light that is comfortable enough for the eyes, but if it seems too dim to you, replace the light sources with more powerful ones.

Light has not only different powers, but also different temperatures. This characteristic indicates the shade of the glow of different sources.

The temperature of the light is:

Different shades of glow affect the human psyche in different ways. For places of rest it is better to choose warm or neutral lamps. The former soothe and set up for a measured rest, the latter invigorate and energize. Cold light quickly tires, can irritate and even cause headaches for those who are under it for a long time.

High-quality garden gazebo lighting is one of the components of your comfortable outdoor recreation. When planning lighting scenarios, think about how you like to spend time in your gazebo. With this in mind, it will be easier for you to navigate the distribution of fixtures in the room.

Perhaps only one central chandelier will be enough for you for occasional gatherings with family members for evening tea. Or you may need full-fledged multi-level lighting if you not only meet friends in the gazebo, but also cook delicious dinners, read, and do needlework.

Summer gazebo lighting is a necessary attribute in landscape design of the suburban area. This building can have a light structure or be installed on a stable foundation, have various size and purpose, but the presence of light is required here. Consider the main types of lighting in the gazebo, the lamps and lamps used, as well as basic wiring diagrams.

lighting options

more comfortable with good lighting. Create lighting in the gazebo with your own hands quite easy if you follow the rules for choosing fixtures and take into account existing techniques in street lighting.

General

attention, because in this case the internal space of the structure is illuminated. Too bright or too dim light is equally unpleasant for the eyes, therefore, you need to spend time on the necessary calculations, including lamp power in the lamp.

The number and power of light sources depends on the type gazebos (open or closed), its dimensions and even the color of the interior. Also you need to take into account the type of ceiling: frosted glass hides a significant part Sveta.

You can use any chandelier, but only if sufficient degree of moisture protection of these devices. For street lamps there are increased safety requirements that must be taken into account when choosing.

Local

Fresh air and birdsong make you want to last longer stay in the garden, so many spend almost all day in the gazebo. it especially true for those who love to embroider, knit or do other things needlework, read, solve Crosswords. Therefore, it is necessary to organize local lighting, for which directional light fixtures with a swivel mechanism are ideal, changing the direction of the beam at any time.

The rules say that together with the local functional backlighting should also work for general lighting, since a bright accent spot, surrounded by darkness surrounding space, does not in the best way affect vision. However, each the case must be considered separately, since in a completely closed gazebo this requirement would be appropriate, but not at all on an open terrace.

Decorative

Magic images, original lighting effects, overall look gazebos in the evening and at night - all this is the task of decorative lighting country house. For him, it is recommended to install lamps in exactly the style in which the rest of the garden and park areas are made, including the lighting of the paths, facades and stairs.

backlights are:

Luminaires and lamps for arbor lighting

Luminaires can be of different shapes, sizes, and ways installation, and they also differ in the type of lamps. Consider the most popular types illumination of the territory of the suburban area.

LED lights are the most popular lighting fixtures, which include duralight, LED panels and ribbons. There are no more economical and durable devices, and what else is needed for garden lighting? In addition, LEDs perfectly tolerate temperature changes and resistant to moisture.

Luminaires for energy-saving lamps (fluorescent) also are in high demand, because they are five times Incandescent lamps are usually more economical, and the quality of light is one of the best! You can choose lamps with warm yellow light for general lighting, or with bright cold for accent lighting.

Halogen lamps do not contain mercury like the above CFLs, but the light output and color accuracy are the best, besides it is an ideal option for local illumination.

Incandescent lamps - yes, these old women have long since lost expensive for modern lighting sources, but in country lighting they are actively are used. Such a lamp works both in heat and in cold, gives a soft cozy light, and is cheaper than other analogues.

Solar-powered lamps

An important task when designing a lighting system in gazebo is the ease of installation of all appliances. That is why today everything more residents of country houses prefer to choose lamps on solar batteries. When they are located in territory should take into account the peculiarity of these devices to be charged from sunlight, so its direct presence is simply necessary.

There are three types of solar lamps the main groups are high street lamps, park and architectural models medium size, and small decorative lamps in the form of all kinds of animals. The main advantages of these models:

Complete autonomy. Their work is not dependent on the availability voltage in the network, only from the weather to some extent.

Mobility. Solar lights are easy to install and also simply dismantled for winter storage.

Security. No wires, no harmful radiation.

Of course, there are significant disadvantages. Yes, business hours of these lamps directly depends on the weather, on a cloudy day such a device will run fewer hours than in clear sunny weather. That is why the use solar-powered lamps in the winter season is unreasonably and inefficient.

Luminaire layouts

Luminaires layout depends on the purpose of lighting and selected fixtures. Consider the most popular lighting options in summerhouse:

Installation of a chandelier in the center of the ceiling. This is a classic trick to create excellent general lighting in this type of building. Need keep in mind that with this option there is no way to organize the backlight a specific zone, so it cannot be considered completely comfortable.

Combination of ceiling chandelier and wall lights. This option allows you to achieve maximum comfort, as you can manage lighting intensity. Most the optimal circuit with a two-gang switch for controlling various lighting groups.

Spotlights around the perimeter of the gazebo. In this manner uniform illumination of all areas of the gazebo is achieved. Point Models Fast mounted, have a small size, and LED models are also help save energy.

Concealed ceiling light. This is a popular way of lighting in gazebo, with which you can create a cozy atmosphere with a subdued light. Great option for relaxation however, insufficient for full lighting for reading or needlework, unless you use additional wall lights.

Wall sconces. These are small lamps designed for decorative lighting. It is advisable to use a sconce of the same style as other lighting fixtures in the area.

LED garlands. Hanging them on the ceiling and walls, you can completely replace them with traditional chandeliers, lamps and sconces. Many wrap garlands around the pillars of the gazebo, providing not only excellent visibility buildings in the dark, but also a great appearance.

Lighting planning tips

selected lighting fixtures. Now you need to implement their connection, and in order to do it right, use our tips.

Choose fixtures according to the design of the gazebo. For closed buildings, conventional lighting devices can be used to interiors, and for open gazebos, lamps with protection against moisture.

Follow wire selection and wiring guidelines for wooden structures. Since the conditions outside are quite aggressive (wind, precipitation), the wires must be protected with a non-combustible corrugated pipe, and connected between each other by soldering or terminal blocks.
