Is it possible to paint our way to a more sunnier outlook? Perhaps—especially with some of the most iconic rooms in history as our guide.

For centuries, world leaders, cultural cognoscenti, and designers alike have turned to the color yellow to enliven rooms, thanks to its glow as a backdrop for candlelight and its power to re-create the atmosphere of sunnier climes inside. Today, the color—with its mood-altering qualities and just a tinge of nostalgia—feels as fresh, relevant, and necessary as ever as we're spending more time at home than we have for decades.

The hue has a surprising range in tone, depending on the amount of black or white mixed in, and shade, based on the whether the yellow skews more orange or green. And its brightening potential is just as potent for a living room color scheme as it is in a dining room, entry hall, bedroom, or kitchen.

Find your ideal shade of yellow right here, from pale butter and bold citrus to more unexpected colors like warm ochre and mustard.

Sir John Soane's Limoncello Drawing Room in London

Swathed in yellow from head to toe, walls to upholstery, the drawing room in the home of architect Sir John Soane (now a museum) was intended to re-create the golden sunshine of Rome or Pompeii. Although the saturated shade would not have been altogether shocking during the Regency period, its monochromatic application reads as surprisingly modern. Today, the color is known as Soanian yellow.

Sister Parish's Yellow Oval Room at the White House

Located on the south side of the second floor of the White House and overlooking the South Lawn and the Ellipse, the Yellow Oval Room may be the most well-known yellow room in America.

The earliest description of the room, which dates to the John Adams administration, mentions yellow wallpaper with gilded stars. Two administrations later, Dolly Madison outfitted it in yellow damask in 1809. This image shows the room during the administration of President John F. Kennedy decorated by Sister Parish and Stephane Boudin.

Yellow living room ideas are a timeless favorite. Hotter shades are perfect for warming up a cool space illuminated by northern light and pastel shades of yellow can be perfect for hot, sunny rooms.

Yellow living room paint ideas can range from deep and earthy to just-off-white. Whichever yellow you choose, your room will feel welcoming by day, and cocooning by night.

Decorating with yellow is the perfect color to pair with contrasting and complementary shades, and it can work in both contemporary and period living room ideas .

Yellow living room ideas

From bright lemon accents to very on-trend color pairings, we gathered some stunning examples of yellow living room ideas, and asked the experts for their tips on bringing a little sunshine into your living space.

1. Choose sunflower yellow

(Image credit: Future / Davide Lovatti)

If bold and bright is your style, opt for a vibrant sunflower yellow.

The shade may conjure summery notions, but it also makes for a cozy, warming environment in the winter too. In this room, it brings a vibrant update to a period property, contrasted with white ceilings and a fireplace, and tons of texture in the silver velvet sofas and rug.

'Note the gloss finish on the walls,' adds Homes & Gardens Editor in Chief Lucy Searle. 'This is an increasingly popular interiors trend that designers are adopting to reflect light and give a high-end finish. But a warning – your walls need to be perfectly finished or this effect will only highlight lumps and bumps.'

2. Get on trend with yellow and gray

Both yellow and gray were named as Pantone’s Colors of the Year for 2021 and are excellent paint colors to pair together.

'For a modern look, balance yellows with something cool like a pale gray or an off white,’ recommends Kathryn Lloyd, Crown Color Specialist. ‘Try teaming this with natural woods and materials like wicker and bamboo as these will blend in well with the contrasting tones.

‘Versatile, sophisticated and subtle, gray living room ideas have become very popular,’ says Chrissie Harper, Customer Experience Manager at California Shutters .

'Not only does it make a room feel warm and inviting, compared to more traditional shades of white, but it also complements bolder accent colors such as vibrant yellows.’

3. Go earthy with yellow ochre

Living room color schemes can also benefit from delving into yellow’s earthier tones, by mixing in a little brown for a yellow ochre.

As demonstrated in this living room, the shade works especially well when used as a wall paint alongside natural textures. In this case, a mixture of light and dark brown woods.

4. Introduce yellow pops to a monochrome scheme

Yellow need not cover your walls to make an impact in a living room. It can have a transformative effect, even when used in small doses in neutral living room ideas or in a largely monochrome scheme, like in this example above.

‘If you wanted to inject a little playfulness to a room without having to commit to big decorating decisions, you can also do it subtly with accessories, cushions, throws or even an accent piece of furniture,’ say Jenna Choate and Mariana Ugarte, Co-Founders of Interior Fox .

‘Work with accessories with different textures, shapes and sizes to bring the space to life, while adding various points of interest throughout the home.’

5. Pair yellow with blue

As we’ve all been longing for the great outdoors a little more than usual, blue living rooms have become increasingly popular.

Pairing blue with yellow makes for a vibrant, mood-boosting scheme. In this room, blue walls are contrasted with sunshine yellow accents, with the combination kept light with the use of white in between them.

6. Add pizazz with a yellow sofa

After the walls and the floor, the next biggest chance you have to inject color into a living room is through your sofa choice.

‘Our must-have Turmeric fabric adds real depth and pizazz when used on a larger piece, like a 3-seater or corner sofa. But it can equally create calmness and warmth when paired with neutrals, as shown in the white living room above,’ says Dani Burroughs, Head of Product at Snug .

7. Go tonal and fade to cream

For a more traditional approach to yellow living room color scheming, pair yellow with a soft cream.

Doing so will create a room that feels welcoming and warm, without feeling too bold. Introduce mid-greens for extra warmth, or blues to cool the space down a little.

8. Add a patterned wallpaper

(Image credit: Kit Kemp for Andrew Martin, Wychwood Provencal Yellow Wallpaper, £60, Cushion in Psycho Sprig Tropical Yellow Fabric)

If you want to take a yellow living room scheme down a notch, but still want to create impact, one way to do so is with a gently patterned wallpaper. Yellow is teamed with black or white, for example, as in the space above by Kit Kemp for Andrew Martin .

‘We’ve noted an increase in yellow. It is becoming a very popular choice this year as homeowners look for ways to add a cheerful color palette to their homes. For a more muted look, introduce delicate patterned wallpaper or for a bolder scheme, paint the ceiling for an unexpected pop of color,' Nina Tarnowski, Founder & Designer for Woodchip & Magnolia .

If you are looking to experiment with yellow or want a quick living room refresh, the best way to do so is always with accessories.

Changing or layering your flooring will have the biggest impact on the room, with a yellow rug the obvious option, and a perfect addition to a neutral scheme.

'Statement flooring within living rooms is being seen more and more. Make the look work by keeping the rest of your room relatively neutral and applying clever splashes of tonal accent color,' says Jenna Kane, Product Development at Kersaint Cobb .

10. Pair yellow with natural textures

(Image credit: Future / Emma Lee / Sally Denning)

This peachy-colored living room has been given a contemporary flourish with pops of primary colors, including a zingy yellow on the bobbin-legged table.

Matched with strong natural textures, such as the weave of the armchair, the room feels pleasingly like a modern Shaker space.

11. Choose yellow velvet for a sumptuous feel

Velvet is a sumptuous fabric, and in gold it is reminiscent of furniture seen in the most lavish palaces in Europe.

Clad armchairs with it in your own living room and the result will be just as luxe. The important thing is to be restrained with the decor in the rest of the space so that the bling doesn't over-power.

Is yellow a good color for a living room?

Yes, yellow is a great color for a living room: warm, welcoming and space-enhancing all in one go, it is hard to go wrong with this inviting color.

'Give your living room a refreshing update with yellow. Its mood-boosting hue has wonderful benefits and works well in any area of the home, but especially the living area. From sunshine yellow, sumptuous turmeric to a soft pastel, there is a color to suit all,' says Nina Tarnowski, Founder & Designer for Woodchip & Magnolia.

How do you decorate a light yellow living room?

A light yellow living room is best decorated with neutrals and naturals so that the space feels calm, sunny and interesting.

'For a calming effect, opt for lighter tones offset by natural finishes,' say interior designers Jenna Choate and Mariana Ugarte, Co-Founders of Interior Fox.

This means introducing whites or creams on woodwork and ceilings, and on furniture, too, then introducing pale woods and natural textures such as bamboo and wicker, basketwork and sisal with which to accessorize and dress the space.

Basic shades of yellow

Many people think of yellow as chicken, sunflower or sun. Of course, in this case, yellow is perceived as a spectrally pure color with all its inherent brightness.

But, in fact, it is more multifaceted and varied. Its main shades are:

  • Sand yellow.
  • Light yellow.
  • Straw.
  • Bright yellow.
  • Orange yellow.
  • Lemon yellow.
  • Electric yellow.

The variety of yellow is provided either by lightening the tone by adding white to it, or by mixing in a color, such as green, as a result of which a lemon tint is formed.

Yellow properties

The main features that are inherent in yellow are: nine0003

Its ability to brighten up an interior that has insufficient lighting levels.

Warm yellows that have a rich hue and are formed by adding orange to visually reduce the space. This must be taken into account if you want to make bright warm shades of yellow walls.

As opposed to a warm undertone, yellow walls in an interior will enhance the space, but only if they have a cool undertone.

What style suits this color

Due to the versatility of this tone, it can be used in almost any style direction.

This is how bright yellow walls match the style:

  • Boho.
  • Hi-tech.
  • Modern.
  • Light yellow walls will suit;
  • Classic.
  • Swiss chalet.
  • Classical English.
  • Country.
  • Ethno. nine0011

How to decorate yellow walls correctly?

When choosing this color for wall decoration, it should be remembered that each interior in its own way will need one or another level of contrast and overall color palette.

If yellow is chosen for the walls, then the interior will be perceived as yellow, as in this case it will become the basis for everything else. A careful choice of shade is important here, since it will be difficult to fix it. nine0003

Light yellow, cool tone is best spread over the entire surface. It will be an excellent substrate for blue, lilac and green flowers.

A room with bright yellow walls looks heavier. Therefore, it is advisable not to apply this color on the entire surface of the walls. It can be diluted with white. This is the best option that is suitable for any style.

Also in modern interiors, such as loft or hi-tech, you can use light gray and gray in combination with yellow on the walls. nine0003

It is worth considering that black in combination with yellow looks quite gloomy, so you should avoid such options for decorating the room.

In which rooms yellow is appropriate

In living rooms, you can use yellow in a wide variety of tones, from light, almost pastel, to brightly saturated.

But in bedrooms, you should still prefer shades of straw and pastel shades of yellow, both warm and cold. This will contribute to the formation of a comfortable, in terms of rest, space. nine0003

The use of yellow in the kitchen will make eating comfortable. The secret lies in the fact that the light reflected from the yellow makes any dish more appetizing due to the play of the light of the refracted and reflected rays.

The only advice that can be given is to use yellow either in the backsplash area or on the rest of the walls in the kitchen.

This room with yellow walls is best combined with a kitchen set in a contrasting shade. For example, blue or green. Moreover, they can be taken in the most pastel colors, which will create a fairly comfortable interior. nine0003

If a backsplash made of yellow tiles is used, then the countertop and fronts of kitchen cabinets should be in contrast with it.

How to realize yellow on the walls?

In order to make the walls of the desired shade, you can paint them. Moreover, the variety of colors that currently exist on the construction market will allow you to create not only any tone, but also give a certain texture.

Venetian plaster can be used to create a specific pattern on yellow walls. With it, you can achieve any texture that will imitate natural stones. nine0003

You can also use yellow wall paper. This is the easiest way to achieve the desired effect. Since you can choose a specific texture, the absence or presence of patterns. In this case, you can create spaces that are completely different in their style.

With the help of wallpaper, the yellow walls in the nursery can be played up in such a way that they create the desired color effect. To do this, you can choose either wallpaper companions, or the desired pattern.

nine0003

Only by looking at all the many photos that show yellow walls in the interior, one can definitely say this color is suitable for the realization of a certain space and how best to apply it.

Grey-yellow living room interior, 45 photos

A practical choice for a family with children or a youth apartment for one person is a gray-yellow living room. This is a non-marking, creative and optimistic combination that has been used in interior design for more than half a century - from the cultural revolution of the 60s to the present day. nine0003

Gray-yellow tandem is available in classic and traditional living rooms, as well as in modern loft , minimalist , modern , Scandinavian and eclectic 9. 5 interiors.

This demand is largely due to the leading positions of gray, which itself has become a favorite color of Western and Russian designers.

It cannot be said that the yellow in this pair is a random fellow traveler who uses the stardom of his companion. He also fell in love with professionals for his amazing ability to fill the space with energy, warmth and light. Together, gray and yellow are harmonious - like a sun-drenched street and shadows, a gloomy sky and rays breaking through cotton clouds. nine0003

GRAY-YELLOW LIVING ROOM: DESIGN BASICS

Starting planning the future design, first of all, evaluate the real area of the living room and its location relative to the cardinal points, that is, which side the windows face - north or south.

In a small living room, it is better to take a light gray tone as a base, and give an accent role to yellow. Maximum - make an accent wall of a not too bright yellow hue. nine0003

In a spacious room or a room connected to the kitchen, you can experiment with several shades of gray, including dark charcoal gray. Complemented by large and varied small yellow decor, the interior is lively and voluminous.

The photo shows examples of gray-yellow living rooms with a small area.

And this is a photo of spacious living rooms and combined kitchen-living rooms in gray-yellow tones.

If the living room windows face a sunny south side, use less yellow, otherwise the atmosphere will be stuffy. And the shade of yellow here needs a special one, containing a refreshing green undertone. There are several greenish-yellow shades - from pale to bright. They look like a cross between yellow and green and are perceived as slightly cool, as opposed to pure yellow, which has a warm "temperature". nine0003

In the northern living room on the dimly lit side, yellow can be used without restrictions, but, of course, within reason. With good lighting, yellow surfaces will “burn” brightly, which visually compensates for the lack of light and heat in the room.

Yellow-orange tones are also relevant for northern rooms. They need to be combined with warm gray shades - for example, with gray-beige.

Professionals advise to take shades of the same intensity - bright yellow and rich gray or pale yellow and the same light gray. It happens that light gray becomes the background for flashy yellow, and dark gray is diluted with pale yellow accessories, but from the point of view of “academic” design, this is a mistake. nine0003

SECONDARY AND ACCENT COLORS FOR LIVING GREY-YELLOW BASE

The gray-yellow color pair is open to collaboration with other neutral and bright colors. The third color can be used:

  • white;
  • black;
  • brown;
  • blue;
  • green;
  • purple;
  • red.
  • nine0024

White is a universal thinner for all contrast combinations. It lightens the atmosphere, creates a feeling of spaciousness and fullness of fresh air.

Black helps to organize the space, brings dynamics, depth and some drama.

Brown is a natural natural color that goes with just about anything. In a gray-yellow interior, he takes a conservative position and works with gray to create a calm, respectable atmosphere. nine0003

Combinations of gray and yellow with blue and green are perfect for a southern living room where cool accents are required.

The combination of gray and yellow with purple looks bohemian and glamorous. This colorful trio is eye-catching, memorable and inspiring.

Here's a creative design move - a large red detail has been added to the gray-yellow interior. It looks good, if only it would be desirable to duplicate the color of fire in at least one more place - for example, put a vase of red glass on a coffee table. nine0003

HOW TO INTRODUCE A GRAY-YELLOW COLOR COMBINATION IN THE LIVING ROOM

Once you have decided on the basic shades and auxiliary colors, plan each component of the interior: finishing of the main surfaces (walls, floor, ceiling), lighting, furniture, textiles and decor.

    1. MAIN SURFACES (WALLS, FLOOR, CEILING)

The safest option is to make all walls light gray. If you want a large bright spot, decorate one wall behind the sofa in yellow. nine0003

The photo shows examples of grey-yellow wallpaper with white added - these are also suitable for decorating the living room walls in your case.

Yellow walls are a risky option, as the color of the sun can optically bring surfaces closer, which reduces space. And for a small living room, this effect is undesirable.

But there is an alternative way to decorate the walls - make the bottom third in white or gray, and the top two thirds in yellow. Then the optical properties of yellow will be neutralized. nine0003

Or decorate the walls in yellow in fragments, as in this photo.

On the floor in grey-yellow living rooms, wood of various shades and coatings imitating wood texture look good.

It is better to order a white ceiling, because the yellow canvas itself will become the center of attention. If you want to make a yellow ceiling, give up a lot of decor in sunny colors.

In addition to the yellow ceiling, this living room also has an accent wall. A risky move, so the situation is diluted to the maximum with white. nine0003

    2. LIGHTING

Those who are going to use dark gray tones in the interior should think about high-quality multi-level lighting. Large charcoal surfaces should not be left unlit - for example, hang a couple of sconces on a dark gray wall, place table lamps next to it, or lay spotlights along the ceiling.

    3. FURNITURE

Furnishings are usually selected according to the alternation principle. Following this logic, you should choose yellow furniture for gray walls, and gray furniture for yellow walls. nine0003

But some experts consider such an alternation of gray and yellow to be a mistake, since the contrast of large details provokes sharp mood swings. Allegedly, looking at a large yellow sofa, a person will feel an emotional upsurge, and when looking at a gray wall - a decline.

There is some truth in this, so emotionally unstable people should go the way of monochrome design. At the same time, the walls are made neutral gray, the furniture is also selected gray, slightly different in tone from the wallpaper, and yellow is introduced into the accents. Another option is to put a gray sofa with a yellow print against a neutral wall - for example, with flowers in sunny colors. Thus, you will combine gray and yellow in furniture design, but there will not be a sharp contrast. nine0003

A good addition to the interior of the living room in gray-yellow tones will be wooden furniture - a chest of drawers, a coffee table, a chair, a rocking chair or a small bookcase.

    4. TEXTILES

Curtains are also often selected by alternating: yellow for gray walls and gray for yellow wallpaper. For small rooms, a monochrome option is safer - gray walls and silver curtains. Although gray curtains with a yellow pattern are also possible.

In the northern living room, you should choose a neutral, light, transparent material with silver threads or matte without shine. nine0003

    5. DECOR

Continuing the theme of wood, we advise you to take a closer look at wickerwork - such eco-decor will make your living room cozier and warmer.

For a modest living room, choose more transparent details: glass vases, chairs or a coffee table made of colorless plastic. Visually, they look light and airy and do not clutter up the space.

    5 GREY-YELLOW LIVING IDEAS:

Once you've got everything planned out, review your notes and try to find some original finishing touch. We hope that our selection will inspire you to search for your unusual idea. nine0003

    1. SILVER AND SHINY SURFACES

Elegant gray color goes well with silver decor - it can be one large element, as in the first photo, or a vase, as in the second example.

Please note that in the second interior, the combination of gray with stone-look electric fireplace looks original. In general, any shiny surfaces and details work well with gray - fabrics with a glossy sheen, metallic furniture fittings, etc. nine0003

    2. MIRROR WALL

Mirrors are a designer's favorite tool that helps visually expand the space through the play of reflections. But you must admit, if the wall in this living room were monolithic-mirror, without rails, then the effect would be too powerful, given the rather large area of the room. So the option with slats is more successful.

    3. MIRROR CEILING

The mirror ceiling (or part of the ceiling) also plays an optical role in expanding the boundaries. It makes the same inspiring impression as a ceiling with an imitation of the starry sky. nine0003

    4. COMBINATION OF YELLOW WITH BRONZE

In traditional and modern eclectic interiors with classic elements, yellow is successfully combined with bronze. Such bronze details give solidity and carry a feeling of comfort.

    5. FOAM WALLPAPERS WITH RELIEF

Foam rubber wallpapers have high sound and heat insulation characteristics, are resistant to mechanical damage and will last up to 12 years. Cleaning them is easy - just walk with a regular vacuum cleaner. nine0003

The disadvantage is the low air permeability, that is, the room pasted over with such wallpaper will need to be ventilated more often. But what a relief texture - I really want to touch it.
