There is no single answer to these questions, it all depends on your desire, imagination and your financial capabilities. You, of course, can seek professional advice from specialists, and they will be able to choose the appropriate option from the catalog or develop an individual design, choose material and color.

The tabletop looks like this: a slab of wood, chipboard, MDF or stone, 3-4 centimeters thick, lying on the pedestals. The shape of the tabletop can be oval, rectangular, asymmetrical, round and with all sorts of bends. The color of the countertop, first of all, depends on the material from which it is made.

Stone countertops

Countertops are made of natural and artificial stone. There is a huge selection of both these days. The consultant will help you choose the right stone for your interior, because each material has its own appearance.

Countertops made of natural stones

A countertop made of natural stone (granite or marble) is not only eternal and practical, but also emphasizes a sense of sophistication and solidity in the interior. It will certainly complement the beauty of your headset and will be the center of attention in your kitchen. Whatever the color of the countertop, it will always be pleasing to the eye because of the various inclusions, textures, patterns and shades. And every time you look at it, you will plunge into a sea of positive emotions and impressions. Countertops for the kitchen can be made of granite, marble, onyx. They are made from a single sheet or in the form of a decorative mosaic or panel. The unique natural pattern of marble or granite is suitable for the implementation of any design idea, because it is as if nature itself has touched these stones with its painted brushes.

The price of countertops made of natural stone is much higher than the price of countertops made of other materials. It depends on the size of the countertop and, of course, on the stone itself, and only after preliminary measurement and selection of the stone can the cost be determined. Be that as it may, you will save money, as countertops made of natural stone are reliable and durable. For many years, a natural stone countertop will delight its owners without changing its original appearance and performance.

Granite is a symbol of strength and durability.

For countertops in the kitchen, experts recommend granite. Such countertops can be matched to any style of interior due to the variety of patterns and colors. Granite countertops are practical and reliable in operation, as they are made from the strongest natural stone, resistant to various liquids, fats and oils. It does not leave traces of wine, tea, fat, as well as cutting objects. In addition, such countertops are not exposed to water, steam and do not dry out at high temperatures, thereby retaining their original appearance for many years. To finish the interior in the kitchen, a window sill made of the same material as the countertop will help you.

Marble is a symbol of beauty and harmony.

Marble is a miracle of nature that brings a sense of peace and comfort to your home for ages. The marble countertop is distinguished by the highest strength and unsurpassed beauty. It has all the qualities and properties to make the user satisfied. The greatness of marble is that it combines an abundance of vibrant colors, unusual shapes and impeccable technical data. Just like granite, marble is resistant to humidity, temperature extremes, lends itself well to polishing, in general, has high performance characteristics. If you love extravagant designs and natural materials, then marble countertops are for you.

Onyx is a symbol of ancient elegance.

Onyx is one of the oldest semi-precious stones that is often mentioned in the Bible. There are several meanings of this word. For example, translated from Arabic, "onyx" means sadness and sorrow. Translated from Greek, "onyx" means claw, nail. The history of this stone is rich and beautiful.

Onyx has several types, each of them has its own purpose and color layers. So, for example, one of the types of onyx is considered more affordable and inexpensive - it is calcite (marble) onyx. As in ancient times, and now, marble onyx, because of its beauty and easy processing, is widely used in the manufacture of countertops. This rock is hard enough to have a mirror finish when polished. Onyx has a very diverse and magnificent coloring. The shades of this stone are green, red, yellow and white. If you carefully consider such a stone, then through the variety of plane-parallel layers and the splendor of its colors, you can see interesting drawings.

Cons of natural stones

The main disadvantage of stone products is their high cost. It should also be noted that it is almost impossible to carry out any restoration work with a stone countertop at home.

Advantages of natural stones

Countertops made of natural stones have the advantage of aesthetic appeal. You can also note the unique strength of products made from such materials and, of course, a rich range of colors. Such countertops are not damaged by a knife, they do not leave stains and scratches. It is for this reason that in the kitchen and in the dining room, countertops made of natural stones are very practical and convenient.

What is a shaker kitchen?

Inspired by the Shakers, a religious sect known for their craftsmanship and high-quality homespun furniture (among other things), contemporary Shaker-style kitchens tend to be simple, functional, and livable, making them a popular option for those looking to create a design. a kitchen that will stand the test of time.

Shakers have traditionally eschewed practices such as tiling and ornamentation on the grounds that they were "deceptive", instead focusing their efforts on creating a kitchen that was honest in both design and appearance.

“The shaker kitchen is very versatile,” says Graham Smith, senior designer at Second Nature Kitchens . “He achieves so much and gives the impression that this is a laid-back look that will look fresh in the coming years.” It can be worn up or down, really traditional or with a modern twist.”

It is this versatility that makes Shaker style kitchens equally suited to period homes and more modern spaces.

The design, perceived quality and durability of Shaker kitchens have traditionally been influenced by a number of factors. Of course, furniture plays a very important role in the design of the kitchen, and you will be able to recognize the similarities in the design of Shaker furniture, including:

With such an engaging spirit of thoughtful, quality craftsmanship and simplicity of style, it's no surprise that Shaker style kitchens have become a mainstay of modern kitchens.

Design, however, is rarely precise: the clean lines of the style create a timeless backdrop for 21st century appliances, smart kitchen storage and distinctive accessories. While features such as side panels and glass are not strictly Shaker features, they can be a great addition to new kitchens.

How to Design a Shaker Kitchen

When it comes to designing a Shaker kitchen, think about simplifying. In practice, this can mean:

Real tree
Plain, unadorned freestanding natural wood furniture, either left natural or painted, with paneled sectional doors is a staple of the Shaker look.

Individual modules
Purchasing individual modules allows you to freely change the layout in the future. If this is not practical for your kitchen, then there are many manufacturers who produce beautiful built-in cookers.

Kitchen island
Where space allows, a central kitchen island or a chest of drawers to display your treasures will give the impression of a freestanding kitchen that is synonymous with Shaker kitchens.

Browse our smart kitchen island ideas for inspiration and check out these freestanding kitchens.

Painted cabinets
Painting Shaker kitchen cabinets is a great way to update an existing kitchen and give it a personal touch. Ideal colors are cream, muted green, pale blue-gray or pink, but even navy blue and red work well as accent colors, perhaps in just one bright subject.

Pair two different colors or natural and dyed finishes for a more distinctive look, but don't go overboard: keep the walls neutral when painting apartments, and vice versa. Also, "avoid using templates unless they are naive and natural," says Helen Parker, creative director of deVOL.

12 Shaker Kitchen Ideas to Inspire You

So, once you've sorted out the practical elements of your Shaker kitchen, you can start getting into decorating it by picking out cabinet design ideas, selecting storage spaces, and adding personality to make their space. Here are some great Shaker style kitchens to inspire you.

1. Choose used furniture for your kitchen Shaker

Visit flea markets looking for old chairs to paint. The typical Shaker chair is upright with three horizontal uprights and a woven fabric seat, but any rustic style chair would look good, like the Windsor design.

"Using old chairs and a table will make a room feel more believable and less contrived," says Helen Parker. If there is room for a main table, a table with a wooden top and painted legs is the perfect finishing touch.

Remember that you can always give old furniture new life with a coat of paint. Check out our furniture painting guide for step by step instructions.

2. Mix and match Shaker kitchen cabinets

Combining cabinets in different colors or materials will be a big kitchen trend for the coming year. In this DeVOL kitchen, the kitchen island is finished in Printer’s Black and the cabinetry is finished in Damask. If you're unlucky with an island, another frequent iteration of the look involves using a darker color for lower kitchen cabinets and a lighter shade for shelves and wall cabinets. Think creamy, neutral colors for upper cabinets and darker, more dramatic colors for lower cabinets.

3. Do the same with countertops.

You can also add interest to your Shaker kitchen by using a variety of countertop materials. Traditional Shaker kitchens have always had wood countertops, but more modern materials such as granite or quartz are often more practical and durable and give the kitchen a contemporary feel. So get the best of both worlds by combining them - it will be especially good if you want to have an island.

4. Be bold with vibrant Shaker kitchen cabinets

There's no doubt that Shaker-style kitchens, mostly neutral color palettes, are a big part of their staying power, but we're starting to see slightly bolder colors emerge. cream or grey. We love that this kitchen pairs pale mint cabinetry with marble countertops and gold accessories to keep it from looking too trendy.

Convinced that a bolder kitchen is for you? Take a look at these inspiring colorful kitchen ideas.

5. Or embrace the dark side with inky hues

If, like us, you're obsessed with dark and atmospheric interiors, turn to Shaker's style palette of muted deep blues, deep greens and inky blacks when decorating your kitchen. If this look is too Tim Burton for you, try pairing darker cabinets with lighter countertops such as quartz or light wood, chrome knobs and knobs will also give an uplifting look.

Find more black kitchens in our design gallery.

6. Add shaker-style storage racks.

Make sure you break up solid cabinet blocks with open shelves. To do this, you can choose glass cabinets or a few wall shelves to store only the most beautiful glassware and china.

Check out our kitchen storage ideas for more space-saving solutions.

7. Add interest to your shaker kitchen with wall tiles

By nature, Shaker's style is very simple, and while we love its understated, timeless design, that means you need to find ways to add flair to your kitchen. Tiling is a great way to do this, whether it's a funky backsplash or an entire wall of colored tiles, as shown below. For similar tiles, try these crackled glaze tiles from Tiles Direct (opens in a new tab).

Find out how to choose the best kitchen tiles in our guide. Do you want to make a wall of tiles with your own hands? Check out our step by step guide to wall tiling.

8. Choose the Right Floor for Shaker Kitchens

If you love the traditional rustic cottage vibe of your Shaker kitchen, stone flooring is your best bet. If you want a really rustic look, you can opt for a reclaimed stone floor, it's a bit more expensive but the finish will be more authentic. If you're trying to stay on a tighter budget, opt for new stone tile to look similar.

See our natural stone floor tile selection guide for more information.

For a modern, cleaner take on the Shaker style, choose bare planks or herringbone floors. We love how the intricate pattern blends with the simple shaker style. If hardwood flooring is a little out of your budget, we say fake until you get it done with herringbone vinyl.

9. Give your Shaker kitchen a modern touch

Shaker's style may be very traditional, but that doesn't mean it can't be fully adapted to work in a contemporary space. The sage green furniture paired with the quartz countertop made this kitchen look modern. And then there are the smaller details, such as ultra-modern lighting, stylish houseplants, and Crittall-style doors. Love it!

Tips for choosing metal doors and windows can be found in our practical guide.

10. Mix old and new furniture design in a shaker style

If you like the practicality of a modern kitchen but still want a little vintage charm in your space, add some old furniture.
