A beautiful backyard pool can be as calming for your mind as it is refreshing for your body. Even the view of tranquil water, whether from inside your home or from your garden, patio, or porch, can soothe the soul.

From minimalist modern swimming pool designs to more formal, elaborate styles, the key to creating a sophisticated swimming pool is to complement the landscape rather than compete with it. This is true of almost any backyard design idea, from pergolas and gazebos to garden sheds. One of the best ways to nestle a pool into the landscape is to carefully choose plant materials surrounding it. Planning a pool in full sun? Consider surrounding with drought-tolerant plants and cool decking materials. For a cooler watering hole, lush up the landscape with plants that thrive in the shade.

Next, you'll want to think through how to furnish your pool deck. It's important to choose outdoor furniture that's comfortable, durable, and suitable to the style of your pool design. Of course, no pool would be complete without plush beach towels. And for a whimsical touch, embellish your pool with a charming outdoor fountain or a stylish garden ornament.

If you’re making plans for summer or simply dreaming of it on a dreary winter day, dive into these serene swimming pool designs for a luxurious escape.

22 In-Ground Pool Designs - Best Swimming Pool Design Ideas for Your Backyard

Mint Images

There’s no better way to beat the heat than a dip in a refreshing swimming pool. It’s even better when that swimming pool is in your own backyard. Today’s in-ground pools go way beyond the turquoise-lined rectangular shapes that quickly began to populate backyards following WWII. With built-in waterfalls, surrounding gardens, and organic shapes, your pool can be a beautiful element to add to your backyard landscape ideas. Plus, whether your home is a traditional Tudor, a rustic farmhouse, or even a glass-wrapped modern ranch, today’s options in patio and building materials allow your pool to easily complement the architecture and style of your house. Many pool and landscape plans also incorporate different gathering areas with unique dining and seating spots, lush patio plants, and interesting lighting, helping to establish your pool as the center point of all outdoor activity—both for daytime family fun and moodier nighttime gatherings.

While many of these pool designs require a lot of space, a large yard is no longer a make-or-break requirement for a backyard pool. Thanks to flexibility in shape and size, there are many swimming pool designs and plans that are just right for small yards. And, sure, a backyard swimming pool is an investment, but don’t count it out just for fear of cost. There are lots of swimming pool design ideas for all styles and budgets. (Tip: If you’re still not quite ready to commit to an in-ground pool, you can still get in on the backyard game with a low-commitment stock-tank pool.) Once your new, beautiful pool is installed and the water is flowing, you’ll be anxious to invite over your family and friends for a summer full of festive pools parties. Don’t forget the pool floats!

Many owners of country houses install a swimming pool on their territory, as swimming is a fun and rewarding activity. Having your own pool allows you to refuse to buy a subscription, from daily trips to the sports complex, from uncomfortable neighborhood with other visitors.

Nowadays, many people can afford a pool in the yard, the size and type of which directly depend on the budget

Before installing the structure, you should determine the type of structure, its purpose, location and appearance. All of these factors are compared with the allocated budget - the more funds, the more options for choosing a pool.

Modern pools in the courtyard of the house - a great place for family recreation

Contents

  • Modern pools in the courtyard of the house - a great place for family recreation
  • Which pool is better to choose for a private house - types and types

The use of an outdoor pool is limited by weather conditions

A pool in the yard will require more thorough water treatment than the same facility in a closed and heated room

Large objects are expensive, and if the family is large, then the pool will have to be taken from capacity so that everyone can fit in there. You also need to consider that the pool may have a depth that makes it impossible for children to use it.

Which pool is better to choose for a private house - types and types

First you need to select the purpose of the object. In the yards of private houses, two types of pools are usually installed - children's or family. Children are suitable in their dimensions and depth only for children. The depth of such objects rarely exceeds 50 cm, the shape of the structure can be in the form of a slide or a fairy-tale castle. School pools, which also do not differ in great depth, can be attributed to the same category, but their capacity has been increased. The internal volume of such objects reaches 800 liters, which is enough to accommodate several children at the same time.

Small inflatable pool with play set heats up quickly, easy to change if needed

Rigid children's pools have a larger volume and are not afraid of accidental punctures

Family pools mean that adults will be there, although there are models that intended for joint bathing of a parent and a child - then the depth can reach 130 cm. Full-fledged objects for bathing adults have parameters of 10 meters in length and 5 meters in width. The volume will be more than 50,000 liters. If the depth is more than 150 cm, then such an object will be considered private, and the child will not be able to swim in it. Next, you need to determine the configuration of the object.

Swimming pools for the whole family differ from children's models in a more robust design

    Framed pool

Framed pools can be of any size. They are sold in a collapsible form, and are already mounted on the site itself. The kit includes a prefabricated frame, a metal shell, a waterproof coating and a layer of insulation. There are also water filtration systems, ladders for descending and exiting people, an awning to cover the structure.

Our wide range of framed pools ranges from small bowls for toddlers to large pools for families

    There are two design options:

    1. Objects with a bar frame form a closed circle when assembling the metal base supports. Such structures are always dismantled for the winter and serve for about 5 years.

Rod pools consist of a frame and a film attached to it

    2. Sheet-framed objects are assembled from plastic or metal shields. Similar designs serve more than 10 years.

Sheet frame tanks are multi-seasonal models that do not need to be dismantled for the winter

This is the best option for installation in the area near the house, as the largest objects can hold up to 55 tons of water, which is enough for a family.

Site preparation Substrate device Frame assembly

Ideally level ground is required for the installation of frame structures. Large objects are supplied with a substrate on which the structure is installed.

    Large inflatable pool

The most affordable is the inflatable pool. They are easy to install, dismantle or move from place to place. This is the easiest option for arranging a seasonal children's pool. The diameter reaches 6 meters, and the internal volume does not exceed 25,000 liters.

An inflatable pool can be installed in 15-45 minutes depending on the size

This pool can be placed anywhere and can be easily moved to another location if desired. Because of this, when the first layer is damaged, water enters the other, forming a multi-chamber effect. To install such an object, you need not only a flat surface, but also cleared of sharp objects.

Inflatable structures have a shallow depth, high sensitivity to punctures and various mechanical damage, as well as certain difficulties when draining. When installing such a pool in the yard, you need to be prepared for the fact that it will last no more than two to three years.

    Concrete pool

Concrete pools take the longest to install, as they will need to dig a foundation pit, moreover, with a margin. A monolithic concrete slab is poured into this pit. Next, it will be necessary to provide for the presence of a technical pit through which communications will be carried out. Interior decoration can be different, for example, from ceramic tiles or more affordable material.

Concrete pool requires significant investment, but it lasts for decades

The bowl of a concrete pool can be given any shape and depth

Such objects require significant financial investments, as well as significant reworking of the landscape. Therefore, the installation of a concrete object is usually carried out even at the stage of building the house itself and arranging the adjacent area, when the courtyard itself has not yet formed.

Such objects can have any capacity and depth, but it will be impossible to move the structure to another place.

    Swimming pond or natural pool

Natural swimming ponds differ from standard swimming pools in that they do not need to install expensive cleaning equipment, as the plants in the pond provide biological balance and the required level of cleanliness. But keep in mind that the temperature of natural water may not always be suitable for bathing adults, and even more so children. The swimming pond will still need to be cleaned from time to time, shoreline cuttings, and other maintenance procedures.

A natural pool is a large enough body of water that is not closed for the winter

It is doubly difficult to maintain a body of water if it combines an ornamental pond with a bathing area

To build such a facility on the site, some analysis is necessary. For the operation of a natural pool, both a deep-water area for swimming and a shallow area with soil and plants are needed, in which the water will be purified. For the full functioning of a natural type object, it will be necessary to install a deck, springboards, bridges and other devices.

    Other options

You can also name two more types of pools that can actually be used on the site near the house:

    Choosing a place to install

There are a few simple rules for choosing a place for a water pool. Free space should be with a margin. The site itself should be flat, and cleared of debris and sharp objects. You do not need to put the structure near plantings, buildings, near the fence or house.

Place the pool away from trees so that falling leaves do not pollute the water

The closer the object is to the water supply system, the better. No technical communications should take place on the site. No structures should be planned at the selected site, unless the site itself is collapsible.

A pool of any type can fit organically into the landscape design of a suburban area

    Design options

    There are several highlights here:

    1. The selected finishing materials must be moisture and frost resistant.
    2. For the shoreline, wood flooring, natural stone or ceramic tiles can be used.
    3. Pool lighting should be provided. It can be single color or multicolor.

For the arrangement of the object, light structural elements and materials with different colors should be used. It is better to refuse dark colors. The best option for finishing the interior of the pool is blue mosaic tiles. In some cases, the object may have a retractable roof.
