You may be moving into a new place or thinking about redoing your current one. When the furniture is in place, window treatments are next up. Many people prefer curtains to frame their windows but they don’t want to invest the time or money into putting up a rod to hang them from.

Hanging curtains on a rod can be cumbersome and a little too permanent for someone who likes to change their décor on a regular basis. That being said, there are several creative ways that you can grace your window with curtains without having to use a traditional curtain rod.

Check out some of the following ideas and see how you can include them in your next makeover.

1 – Hooks

There are a number of hooks you can use to hang your curtains. First, you can check out the self-adhesive curtain hooks that you can find where the curtain rods are sold. You will have to take your time with this project and carefully measure the distance between the grommets that are on the curtains.

Once they are in place you just have to place each eyelet ring on your curtains right on the hooks.

2 – Drawer Pulls

You can find antique-looking drawer pulls in the kitchen section of the hardware store that can be used just like a hook. Find a drawer pull that is just the right size for the eyelet hole in the curtain so it can slip right on.

You can find an assortment of styles – modern, country, abstract – as well as a myriad of colors. You should be able to screw the drawer pull right into the wall just as you would on a cabinet or desk drawer.

3 – Rope

This option is perfect if you have a country décor and need to hang curtains with a western or country pattern. The first thing you need to do before selecting your rope is to measure the width of the curtains you will be hanging. If you have two panels you only have to measure the width of one then double it.

Find a sturdy rope that will easily fit through the top opening of the curtain. If you are buying your rope in a craft store, a fabric store, or hardware warehouse, once you have the right width you can ask for it to be cut the length that you need it.

Make sure to get several extra inches on both sides. You will have to screw in a hook that can support the rope. You can wrap the rope around the hook to secure it and let it hang down.

If it’s a wide area you are covering you may need to place a hook in the middle of the wall to hold the curtain or nail the curtain to the wall so it won’t fall. You can use a small but sturdy nail or tack to hold the middle up.

4 – Tree Branches

Using a tree branch to hang your curtains is a nice way to add a touch of nature to your décor. While the tree branch doesn’t have to be shaped perfectly, just make sure that it is strong enough to hold your curtains. If the curtains are made from a heavy material you will need a branch that is nice and sturdy.

Once you find a tree branch you would like to use, break off or saw off any small twigs or branches on it. Once the branch is free of any extra growth you will want to get it even smoother by running sandpaper over it.

In order to hang your curtain you either need to a bracket on each side where you will be hanging the branch, or cut two pieces of the branch and them to each side so the branch can rest on these pieces.

5 – Sports Equipment

If you have an athletic décor, there are several pieces of equipment you can use to replace traditional curtain rods. Baseball bats, hockey sticks, golf clubs, and even an oar to a boat are interesting candidates. Look for equipment that the curtain can slide over.

You can add a finial at the end so that the curtain doesn’t slide off when opened or closed. Some ideas include baseballs when using bats and pucks when using hockey sticks.

Golf balls would work perfectly with golf clubs and there are a number of ocean-related options when using a boat oar.

6 – Nails

If you want to keep things nice and simple and you have a simple curtain made out of a lighter material you can just use nails. Look for nails that are long enough so you can drape the curtain directly over each one.

Make a straight line of the nails using a ruler to make sure the line is straight. You can then hang your curtain in a straight line or create a ripple effect letting the curtain hang in between nails.

7 – Copper Pipes

Copper pipes can give a simple touch of elegance to a modern décor. You will find these pipes in any home décor store and while you are there you will need to pick up brackets to hold the pipes in place.

You might also want to check out something like a vintage-looking doorknob or drawer pull you can add to each end to finish the look off and keep the curtain in place.

8 – Upholstery Tacks

If you are renting a place and don’t want to drill any holes in the wall you can hang your curtains directly on the wall with upholstery tacks. You would not be able to pull the curtains open but you could get materials to use to tie back the curtains and use tacks to attach those to the wall as well.

There are so many inexpensive materials you can find at your local dollar store that would make this easy and inexpensive to put together.

9 – Command Hooks

There are a number of different styles and sizes of the easy-to-use Command Hooks. These hooks were created so you can hang any size picture or decorative items on your wall without making a single mark. The instructions are on each package and they are easy to use.

Once you want to remove the item from your wall it comes off without a hitch (or a hole!). These would work if you want to hang your curtains an don’t want to use a traditional curtain rod.

You can use a number of them to hold curtains that are lightweight or a little heavier.

10 – Wire

A moderate to heavy gauge wire could also be used in lieu of a curtain rod. It is another quick, easy, and inexpensive way to hang your window coverings. You will need brackets or something on each side of the wall to wrap the excess wire around.

You also want to find some tie-backs if you want to pull each side of the curtain back to let some light in.

11 – Yardstick

Using a yardstick as a curtain rod would be a great way to decorate a man-cave or the bedroom of your favorite handyman. This would be simple to put into place and you could even use measuring tape as tie-backs for your curtain.

12 – Plastic Animals

A very creative crafter online took a couple of plastic elephants from a dollar store and was able to turn them into curtain holders. She sprayed them gold, cut them in half and mounted them on the wall.

Then she took each end of the curtains and draped them over raised elephant trunks. You could even use several of them across the wall and create a draped effect.

If you’re looking for easy, inexpensive ways to hang curtains without drilling holes into your wall, there are lots of options. While most of the time, I’m okay with skirting around a landlord’s rules and will happily drill holes to hang art and curtains, every now and then you meet a landlord who’s such a stickler, you wouldn’t even dare bring a drill into the apartment. If you find yourself in such a situation, these damage-free ideas for hanging curtains will help you keep your privacy—and your security deposit.

Use Temporary Command Hooks

If you love the look of a real curtain rod—or have a penchant for decorative finials—then a simple tension rod probably won’t work for you. Instead, use a trick we often employ on photo shoots when we don’t want to drill holes in our studio walls: pick up some Command hooks. They attach everything from picture frames to small shelves to the wall, yet one tug on the strip’s tab instantly releases the hold. Command sells metal hooks designed specifically to hold curtain rods, and the brushed nickel finish works with a wide variety of curtains. If you have a different style hook in mind, you can try MacGyvering your own by gluing two Command strips together and using them to hang up any decorative hook you like.

Hang Curtains With Tension Rods

If you have traditional paned windows with frames, tension rods that stretch from one side of the frame to the other are a subtle and sophisticated way to hang curtains. When hanging sheer, lightweight curtains pair them with a thin curtain rod (no bigger than 7/16 inch) for a delicate style. Depending on the look you’re going for (and how much privacy you need), position the rod at the top of the window for maximum coverage, or place it lower for a country-curtain style.

Order Custom Compression Shades

If you plan to stay in your rental for several years and don’t mind spending a little more to get custom-cut blinds, there are several companies that offer blinds with a compression system (i.e. a drill-free installation). Check out RediShade’s selection of Artisan Custom Shades These fabric pull-down shades come in 7 different degrees of light filtering, from translucent to blackout, to make both sunlight-lovers and vampires happy. Be sure to choose an option that uses a “Simple Fit” compression system, rather than an adhesive strip, which can harm the paint at the top of the window frame. Or, check out their accordion shades.

Make a Faux Roman Shade

By sewing a custom-sized curtain panel with pockets at the top and bottom for tension rods, you can create faux Roman shades. If you know how to sew a straight line, making this shade is a breeze, and DIY-ing it lets you customize the color and pattern of the window treatment. When it’s time to move out, you can pack up the rods and curtain and take them along to your next place.

Buy Twist & Fit Curtain Rods

Using the same concept as an ordinary tension rod, twist and fit curtain rods are secured across the window. Their design gives the impression of a hook and a separate rod, when in fact, it’s all one piece. I like the Maytex option above, in the dark oil-rubbed bronze finish, but metallic options are also available.

Suspend Curtain Rods from the Ceiling

If it’s dry, crumbly plaster or a cinderblock wall that’s preventing you from drilling holes, consider hanging your curtain rod from the ceiling instead. If you have high-set windows, like those in the home above from Elle Decoration featured on My Domaine, suspending curtains from the ceiling will look natural. If you have particularly low windows, a tension rod may still be your best bet (see above). Take a look at Umbra’s ceiling-mount bracket, which comes in nickel or dark espresso finishes.

At the same time, do not forget that curtains and curtains perform not only a decorative function. Their direct practical purpose is to regulate the amount of light entering the room. There are a lot of options for attaching curtains, and almost every one of them involves the presence of a cornice. nine0003

What to do if there is simply no place for a cornice, or until you have found a cornice that would ideally suit the design of the room, but there is a great desire to “dress” the windows, thereby isolating yourself from the external hustle and bustle of the big city? Let's find the answer together, how to hang curtains, if there is only imagination and a desire to decorate your home, but there is absolutely no opportunity to use a cornice. You will be helped by exclusive tips and recommendations on how to manage in interior design without a cornice. nine0003

Curtains that are attached without the use of a cornice are easy to hang, remove, and the attachment does not interfere with washing and ironing.

Even if you do not use a curtain rod to hang curtains, we will need some tools and materials, namely:

Picture 1. In the case when the window frame is divided into separate glazed areas, you can do without the cornice, just covering each glass individually with curtains. Creative thinking sometimes offers the most unexpected solutions to the tasks set. nine0003

The case with curtains is no exception. Therefore, when you see someone wearing a coat on the windows, don't be surprised - this is not an attempt to dry an old thing, but a creative solution for curtaining windows. Coats are not the best option, but light shirts made of thin chintz in a small flower may well replace curtains on windows in utility rooms or verandas. Satin or lace ribbons, ornately tied on the sleeves, will help to give such “curtains” elegance. Often, window frames have a complex pattern and are divided into separately glazed sections. nine0003

In these cases it is possible to cover each such glass individually with curtains (Fig. 1). Curtains can be attached to a fishing line or a strong thread stretched between small carnations. In turn, nails must be hammered along the edges of the curtained section of the frame. Curtains can be attached both to the upper part - then the lower one will fall freely - or to both at the same time, which will ensure a tighter fit of the curtain to the window. Roman blinds. No wonder, because you can choose the density of the curtains and colors, they are light, fit snugly against the window, well protected from direct sunlight, and also do not require laborious fastening of bulky cornices. Of course, this type of curtain is not universal, it is not suitable for every interior. nine0003

At the same time, very often it is Roman blinds that become a saving straw when it is simply not possible to fix the cornice. You can hang the curtains on ordinary hooks for outerwear, which are usually used in hallways. loops to curtains - can be hung as in fig. 2. Of course, any hooks will not work for such a cornice, and you will have to look for accessories of an interesting design, which will serve not only as a reliable fastener for curtains, but also as an interesting addition to the interior of the room.Curtains can be hung on a textile fastener, or simply Velcro. she received the name for the reliability of the adhesion of the layers of which it consists. nine0003

The textile fastener consists of two parts: a fleecy part and a layer with small hooks. The fleecy part of the Velcro must be fixed on the wall above the window (you can fix it directly on it, or you can attach the Velcro to a wooden plank, and then attach the plank to the wall with screws using at least three attachment points) (Fig. 3.) This method of attachment contributes to the most dense fitting the curtains to the window. This method of fastening the curtains in the bedroom is especially justified, where the curtains not only perform a decorative function, but also must effectively cope with the function of darkening the room, preventing the penetration of sunlight in the early morning. This method of fastening has another advantage - ease of maintenance of curtains: they are easy to hang and also easy to remove, and the fastening does not interfere with either washing or ironing such curtains. nine0003
