It features four bedrooms, four bathrooms, three terraces and a recent past as the New York home of David Bowie – and it could have been yours for a mortgage repayment of just over €50,000 a month. Five years after the singer’s death, and less than a month after going on the market, Bowie’s apartment in the city has sold for $16.8 million, or about €14.2 million.

The 470sq m (5,090sq ft) residence is in the SoHo/Nolita area of Manhattan, at 285 Lafayette Street. The singer bought the property for $3.81 million in 1999 and lived there with his wife Iman until his death, in 2016. The sale, handled by Corcoran Group, was the first time the apartment had come on the market since then.

The listing describes it as a "grand yet intimate condominium residence with three perfectly situated terraces. The interior was beautifully crafted by one of Europe's most renowned architect/designers. Direct elevator access to the apartment's entrance gallery leads to a 56 x 22 foot great room with three exposures and a western terrace. Eleven foot ceiling heights, a fireplace, adjacent library (w/bath), and open kitchen add to the space's character and function.

“The main bedroom suite measures over 1,000 sq ft and features a fireplace, dressing room, oversized bath and terrace. There are an additional three bedrooms, three baths, and a powder room.

“Originally built in 1886 and served as the Hawley & Hoops chocolate factory, 285 Lafayette Street was converted to a full-service condominium building in 1999.”

The real-estate agent estimates the mortgage repayments at about $60,350 (or about €51,150) a month, plus property taxes of $8,900 and maintenance and common charges of $7,802.

The listing describes the SoHo/Nolita area as an “architectural time capsule from the days when cast iron was all the rage”. In the 1960s artists began converting properties in the area into apartments and studios. “Today, high-end retail and restaurants occupy lower floors in what has become one of Manhattan’s most sought-after neighbourhoods. Nolita comprises the 16 blocks west of SoHo, over to the Bowery. The new hyper-specific portmanteau (for “North of Little Italy”) was bestowed in the 1990s to delineate its distinct, more-residential feel.”

David Bowie fan convention coming to NYC’s Terminal 5

Having debuted in Liverpool last month, the David Bowie World Fan Convention now comes to NYC's Terminal 5 on June 17 and 18, 2023, with a warm-up welcome party for VIP ticketholders happening one day prior (6/16). Guests and events TBA, but the Liverpool edition featured multiple Bowie collaborators telling their stories, live Bowie tribute sets, the Bowie Ball, and more. Tickets go on sale today (7/29) at 10 AM.

Via press release:

The next convention coincides with both the 40th Anniversary of the release of Bowie’s transformative album Let’s Dance and half-century since the release of the equally iconic, Aladdin Sane. Organizers are planning for both albums to get star treatment over the course of the weekend.

Hell’s Kitchen’s Terminal 5 venue has been confirmed as the setting for the next convention, utilising the innovative, multi-level and multi-environment venue for the convention’s range of talks, meet-and-greets, live performances and, of course, the showstopping Bowie Ball.

Limited VIP Tickets will afford fans the opportunity to visit key New York City locations linked to Bowie’s work and his life living there including Andy Warhol’s Factory, CBGB and Max’s Kansas City venues and Bowie’s apartment with more to be announced.

A specially-published #BowieCon23 map also puts attendees in charge of their own route around the city.

[...] Dave Pichilingi, Co-Founder of the David Bowie World Fan Convention, says: “Taking the David Bowie World Fan Convention to New York is to take the story to the heart of his story, with the recording of albums including those later-life classics, The Next Day and Blackstar, as well as Let’s Dance and Never Let Me Down all being rooted in the city. This year’s event proved the status of musicians, photographers, filmmakers, and other high-profile Bowie collaborators that this event can attract and New York will certainly be no different.”

A sell-out success in its first year, the convention, a collaboration between the Sound City music festival and the influential David Bowie Glamour fanzine, brought together an enviable list of participants, including (but not limited to) guitarist, Carlos Alomar and Young Americans vocalist, Robin Clark. Amongst their incredible stories, told to a packed room of hundreds, was the tale of their first meeting with Bowie in New York itself, the home-cooked dinner for the emaciated star that followed, and Bowie’s later return for the 'Fame' sessions with John Lennon in tow.

Celebrating the news that the convention is to visit his home city next time around, Alomar said: “The British are coming!!! The British are coming!!! Yes, indeed, they are. The David Bowie World Fan Convention 2023 is coming, and there’s no better way to celebrate the life and works of David Bowie than to get together in New York City, a place where David and I recorded so much great material and a place we both called home. This couldn’t be more appropriate or exciting. This thing just gets bigger …and better.”

Further, prestigious guests included bass player, Gail Ann Dorsey, Blackstar collaborator Donny McCaslin and the last surviving member of the Spiders from Mars, Woody Woodmansey. They joined fans, panel moderator and author, Nicholas Pegg, as well influential photographers, video makers and artists known-by and inspired-by Bowie in Liverpool for the three-day celebration of the legendary musician’s life and work.

The scenes witnessed in Liverpool did justice to the memory of the man everyone had gathered to celebrate, with bands including Rebel Heroes and The London Boys lining up for faithful live recreations of his most famous recorded work, while a carefully curated selection of performance artists made wild and wonderful interpretations come to life at the dress-up-and-dance Bowie Ball. Taking place at the ornate St George’s Hall in the center of Liverpool, the ball – which will return to the NYC event in 2023 – saw face-painted Aladdin Sanes, hair-streaked Let’s Dance-era Bowies, and more than one Ziggy Stardust in attendance.

I LOVE NEW YORK - Elegant New York It's probably surprising that I became a New Yorker, because I never even thought about it. - David Bowie

[Box]
In New York City, Bowery Street has been unofficially renamed David Bowery. It happened just during a snow storm. A certain enthusiast by nature and admirer of the musician, by vocation, dragged a ladder to the intersection of Bowery and Houston and, under the cover of a dense veil of snow, added David on a green sign - it turned out to be David Bowery. Whether the city authorities will heed the cry of the soul is not yet known, but the new name hung over the intersection for some time. Fans of David Bowie, who died of cancer a month ago, thus paid tribute to the memory of the legendary musician.
[/Box]

In early January, the last album of the famous musician David Bowie Blackstar was published. The album topped the American national chart, which has been compiled for decades by Billboard magazine. Throughout his half-century career, the British singer has striven for this. Ironically or according to the cruel laws of show business, but Bowie achieved his goal only after his death. Recall that he unexpectedly released Blackstar on January 8, the day he turned 69years. And on January 10, the musician passed away. It turned out that David had been battling liver cancer for the past year and a half. And lost...

Blackstar is not Bowie's only album to hit the US Billboard 20 hit parade today. The singer's Best of Bowie is in fourth place, and his legendary album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, released in 1972.

There's even more Bowmania on the UK National Chart. Blackstar is also in first place. In addition, nine discs by David Bowie recorded by him in previous years were included in the list of the 40 best albums of the week.

[box]
HERE IN NEW YORK I get a lot of people shouting Hey Bowie! It's okay, it suits me. Because in London everyone screams "Dave" and it makes me want to bash their fucking heads in. My name is David and I hate being called Dave. I think, by the way, that everyone is well aware of this.
[/box]

Of course, he was already favored by both critics and millions of fans around the world. Before the release of his last album, his records sold over 140 million copies. In the UK, nine of his albums went platinum, 11 gold and eight silver. In the US, Bowie has had five platinum and seven gold albums. At 19David was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Each of the films in which he starred has become a cult: "The Man Who Fell to Earth", "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence", "Labyrinth", "The Last Temptation of Christ", "Hunger", "The Prestige".

He was called the greatest innovator in art, a chameleon musician, a troublemaker. In fact, David Bowie became the first popular singer to take the risk of publicly declaring his unconventional sexual orientation. He did it on January 1972 years in an interview with Melody Maker magazine. Four years later, already in an interview with Playboy magazine, the musician clarified that he was bisexual. At the time, it could have ruined anyone's career, but he took the risk.

David Robert Jones (real name of the musician) was born on January 8, 1947 in Brixton. This is an area of London where not the most affluent people lived. His mother worked as an usher in a cinema. Father is in the personnel department of a charitable foundation. Already in elementary school, David attracted the attention of teachers. He was spoken of as a very gifted child. He showed an early interest in music. He listened to the records of American musicians of the 50s. Little Richard, Fats Domingo, Elvis Presley were his idols. David learned to play many instruments, from the ukulele to the piano. At the same time he studied fine arts and design.

One incident changed his life. David was 15 at the time. He started flirting with the girlfriend of his best friend George Underwood. He got angry and hit David with his fist. George wore a ring on his finger, and the blow fell just in the left eye. David had to leave school for four months because there was a real threat that he might go blind. He had several operations. As a result, he saw with the injured eye, but the perception of color was lost. From the outside, it seemed that David had different colored eyes. He used this effect frequently in his career.

Sitting at home, the teenager was carried away by the books of George Orwell and Jack Kerouac, which had a huge impact on his worldview. It was then that David decided to become famous at all costs, but, by his own admission, made years later, he did not know how. Therefore, he decided that the easiest path to fame was rock and roll.

By the age of 17, David had learned to play the saxophone and guitar, piano and harpsichord, harmonica and stylophone, electric guitar and synthesizer, and a number of other instruments. Even then, he changed musical styles, moved from group to group. Success came to him at 1969 with the release of the single Space Oddity. The song reached the top five UK hits.

So maybe the drugs didn't change my life in any way. Although they helped me to penetrate into the dark corners of consciousness.
[/box]

Bowie's 70s were marked by this song and the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars. In the late 70s, the musician recorded three albums that entered the history of rock music as the "Berlin Trilogy": Low (1977), Heroes (1977) and Lodger (1979). In the 80s, the world recognized another David Bowie. He recorded the incredibly successful commercial songs Ashes To Ashes, Let's Dance (a duet with Mick Jagger), Under Pressure (with Queen).

All this time there were legends about the musician's personal life, which he sometimes willingly warmed up. In an interview given to renowned journalist Jonathan Ross a few years ago, Bowie, when asked about his sexual relationships and preferences, answered briefly: "I on threw my leg over a lot" .

David met his first wife, model Angie Barnett, in 1969. She was a close friend of the journalist Mary Finnigan, with whom the aspiring musician rented an apartment in Beckenham. Mary was seven years older than her lodger. One day, a single mother raising two children was sunbathing in her garden and heard someone singing. These were lines from the song Space Oddity, which later became a super hit. She raised her head and shouted: “Who is singing this?” At the same moment, her new tenant's head popped out of the second floor window: "It's me — David!" Finnigan invited him to come down to her "for a cup of tea and hemp tea." David was next to her in a second.

Zoe, who grew up a long time ago and calls himself Duncan Jones (he preferred to take his father's real name), became a film director.

They became lovers. For the first three months, everything went great. Then Mary began to realize that David was cheating on her. And one of those with whom he played behind her back was Angie, her friend. Barnett claims that the initiative came from Bowie.

“One day he called me and said he was ill, and Angie remembers Mary gone somewhere, — „You not could come and take care of me?“ he asked I agreed. When he met me, did not look sick at all. He said that the mere thought of that I was going to treat him helped him recover. We are sat next to me. First they talked about music, then sexual freedom. I admitted to being bisexual. “I am too!” exclaimed David. In that the same evening we slept together.

In March 1970 they got married. In May 1971, their only son, Zoe, was born to them. February 19The couple divorced in the 80s. Barnett claims it was Bowie's fault. He forced the so-called "open marriage" on her. In other words, David was not going to be a faithful spouse, and she, out of jealousy and resentment, also cheated on him with everyone in a row.

[box]
I've reinvented myself so often that today I feel like I was originally a fat Korean.
[/box]

In various interviews and memoirs, Angie spoke a lot about her life together with Bowie. The most scandalous accusation that came from her lips against her ex-husband is the allegation that one day she returned home and found David in bed with ... Mick Jagger. According to Angie Barnett, they had sex.

She thinks that Bowie was terribly jealous of her for Jagger, and does not hide the fact that she slept with Mick. And once had sex with him in the presence of David. However, she did it with the consent of her husband. For them, this was not new. But then Jagger recorded his famous ballad Angie. Bowie decided that it was dedicated to Barnett. And got angry. After that, he seduced Mick's wife Bianca, and then Jagger himself. According to Angie, this story ended their marriage. "David hated me ," Barnett said in an interview after Bowie's death.

- Divorce was the best solution. But and here it is came from by me dishonestly. After all, I have not worked anywhere for 10 years , I was engaged only in him and his musicians. Traveled from them everywhere, ironing their suits, cooking, looking after the child. When we got divorced, I was a nobody, and he became a superstar. The court gave our son to him, and I did not even resist, she was so depressed ... David set Zoey against me. My boy since me not talking to of the divorce itself.

Indeed, Zoe, who grew up a long time ago and calls himself Duncan Jones (he preferred to take his father's real name), became a film director. After his parents divorced, he was close to David. I never met my mother.

After divorcing Barnett, Bowie continued to have affairs. Over the years, his mistresses were singer Tina Turner, actress Susan Sarandon, actress and singer Bette Midler, English aristocrat Sabrina Guinness, dancer Melissa Hurley and many others. Everything changed when he met supermodel Iman. "Imagine, had the same hairdresser with !" - Bowie later recalled with a laugh. The Somali beauty was nine years younger, but this did not interfere with their relationship, which developed very rapidly. In April 1992 they got married. They got married in Florence in the church of St. James. There are still hotels offering for an additional cost of rooms with "view of place where Bowie and Iman became spouses” . In August 2000, their daughter Alexandria Zahra was born. David affectionately called her Lexi.

[box]
Time really goes faster with every passing year. Life is really very short - as they warn about it from the very beginning. And it seems that there really is a god. Because if all the other statements are true, why shouldn't I believe this?
[/box]

After the birth of his daughter, Bowie completely changed his lifestyle. He became a homebody. I tried to spend as much time as possible with my family. In an interview with the British newspaper The Guardian in 2014, Iman stated:

“I fell in love with David Jones. Not in David Bowie. Bowie is a singer, showman. It's not people. Person is David Jones whom I met.”

In another interview (2010, Harper's Bazaar), Iman admitted: David is impossible to quarrel with. He is an Englishman until marrow. When a quarrel is brewing, he simply falls silent. I scream i. He will listen for a bit, and then will make me laugh. It's like a cabaret. I am here but I forget why I was angry.”

David Bowie was secretly cremated in New York. There were no friends or relatives. He wanted it that way. He asked not to make a fuss about his death. The place of burial is kept in the strictest confidence. The ceremony took place on January 14th. Apparently not by chance. Exactly January 14, 19At age 66, exactly 50 years before his cremation, David Jones became David Bowie.
