7. Choose a herringbone wood kitchen flooring for an elegant look

Reuse reduces landfill while curbing the need to plunder the earth's resources. Salvage generally has not travelled very far, so it bears a comparatively tiny carbon footprint.'

'At the moment, we find customers are leaning towards larger tile sizes as often minimizing the number of grout joints is a priority,' comments Joshua Fernandez at Quorn Stone . 

'In terms of kitchen trends, we always advise customers to steer clear and go for a classic style in the kitchen area. Purchasing a stone flooring or porcelain floor is an investment for the home and one that often takes careful consideration – our advice is to always go neutral in your chosen floor covering for ground floor spaces and instead inject colour through paint colors and accessories. 'Try a classic diagonal checkerboard or a very defined and crisp geometric, so that the eye can catch the defining principle of the pattern with just one glance.'

Natural stone is arguably the best kitchen flooring. It should last forever and acquire a lovely patina over time, but it can be cold and unwelcoming underfoot, so ensure you couple it with underfloor heating and rugs. 

Wood planks are a timeless classic but can be expensive and need regular after-care, while tiled floors can be cold and unforgiving underfoot (underfloor heating will help). 

If you have an open plan kitchen living room, you may want to use contrasting floor materials to define zones, or else use the same floor throughout for a fluid, seamless space (a good option for small kitchen layouts).

What is the most durable kitchen flooring?

Again, natural stone is the most durable kitchen flooring, closely followed by porcelain tile – if you are trying to balance kitchen flooring costs, the latter will give you good durability at a lower price. 

All kitchen flooring ideas need to be tough, long-lasting and hardwearing, so consider comfort, durability and maintenance issues as well as pattern, finish and looks. 

It is always better to get your floor laid by a professional, whichever type of material you choose; they can advise on substrate, quantities and any special finishes or treatments that will extend the life of your kitchen flooring. 

Limestone, slate, granite, sandstone and travertine (a limestone/marble mix) come in many sizes, formats and finishes depending on the color and finish you want. Not all stones are equally durable though, so ensure your choice is sealed against splashes and stains.

What is the easiest kitchen flooring to keep clean?

Single sheet kitchen flooring ideas are easiest to keep clean – poured rubber, concrete and vinyl sheet are all really resilient to dirt, scratches, chips or stains. However, all can be damaged if not swept regularly, as constant treading in of small stones or grit can eventually mark the surface. A quick mop with a general cleaning solution will finish the task. 

Polished concrete will need resealing every three to nine months, but other than that you can treat it like any other durable floor and sweep and mop it to keep it clean.

Stone floors are tough, won't harbour dust and are easy to maintain with a quick vacuum and mop with a mild detergent, although pitted tiles and grout lines will attract dirt. 

Laminate is durable, but needs a good vacuuming (with a hard floor attachment) before being cleaned. Use a general floor cleaner diluted in warm water, but as you would with wood, make sure no pools of water sit on the floor as you clean – a damp wipe with the mop is perfect.

There are also a ton of more high-end luxury trends like marble and engineered wood. Take a look at how many options are available these days! It’s crazy.

Waterproof Vinyl Kitchen Flooring

This vinyl flooring is 100% waterproof. There are two options for waterproof vinyl floors: WPC vinyl and SPC vinyl. Both options are trendy right now, but SPC is slightly newer, and it’s growing faster.

WPC stands for wood plastic composite but is also commonly referred to as waterproof core. The core layer is completely waterproof. You’ll see WPC vinyl planks with prints mimicking the hottest wood trends including distressed and handscraped looks that can fool even a discerning eye.

Meanwhile, SPC is made from a stone-plastic composite core. It’s also entirely waterproof, but the core is more rigid. That’s why SPC is also called rigid core vinyl flooring. I hesitate to call this a trend because tile floors have been the kitchen flooring staple for years. Tile is known for being durable and easy to clean, perfect for kitchens.

But, with the surge in wood kitchen flooring, is tile on its way out?

Not at all! Tile is still as trendy in kitchens as ever before. However, the trending tile looks have truly evolved over the last 5-10 years.

With current flooring trends, I talk a lot about technology. Technology has given us the ability to achieve virtually any look with any type of flooring.

The wood-look tile kitchen flooring trend is super hot right now. Tile manufacturers are keeping up with the times and following the trends of contemporary wood and stone. This means you can have the sleek, current kitchen of your dreams with good ol’ dependable tile flooring.

Will the tile kitchen last in 2022 and beyond?

Absolutely! I predict that tile will never fully go out of style in the kitchen.

I just recommend following the current wood and stone flooring trends to get a tile look that will stay current for the lifetime of your floor.

Laminate was the original wood-look kitchen flooring. Before laminate took off, you didn’t see many kitchens with wood (or wood-look) floors.

Before laminate, kitchen floors were often tile, old-school vinyl, or even-older-school linoleum. Throwing an inexpensive wood-look option into the mix changed things.

If you ask me, I would say laminate flooring is responsible for many of the current kitchen flooring trends and other flooring trends, as well.

As technology improves, so does laminate flooring. You will see even more convincing wood looks and all of the current wood trends including handscraped wood looks, and distressed wood looks.

And! Now, there is even water-resistant laminate! Now this is flooring perfect for the kitchen!

Will the laminate kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

I don’t think so. Over the next couple of years, homeowners will probably continue to use laminate floors in their kitchens, and the wood-look will stay current. 

However, I predict that newer, more waterproof options will likely be trending in the kitchen and all around the house over the next decade. If waterproof laminate advances more, we might see a comeback.

Sticking with the wood kitchen flooring trend, engineered wood is a relatively new kid on the block. A step up in durability and perception from laminate, engineered wood is the only option (aside from solid hardwood, obviously) that is made from real wood.

Engineered wood features a thin veneer top layer of solid wood; however, the remaining base of the product is made up of artificial materials. This base could be composed of plywood or high-density fiberboard.

If you want real wood in your kitchen, engineered wood is the way to go. It’s less expensive than solid hardwood and the artificial base is more water-resistant than solid wood.  

Engineered wood is extremely durable and offers looks in just about every trending wood look. With no extra finishing or refinishing required, engineered wood is out-of-the-box ready and, often, super easy to install yourself. I think of it as the busy homeowner’s wood flooring.

I think so. It is the only option other than solid hardwood that looks exactly like the real deal. And people love the real deal. I believe engineered wood flooring will quickly become a kitchen staple.

Coastal style brings the beach to you. Don’t mistake this as a beach house only style though; mainlanders are adopting it as well.

Coastal style is light, airy, with plenty of beachy colors like white, gray, blue, and sandy tan. This pairs well with trending whitewashed kitchen floors or a beautiful blonde wood look.

The light and airy look, yes. But the whole coastal vibe? I wouldn’t count on it. I’d recommend choosing a blonde wood and steering away from the whitewashed super coastal look.

Whitewashed Wood (and Wood-Look) Kitchen Flooring

The whitewashed look is more of a west coast / California trend that is starting to spread across the country. Well, some parts.

As that relaxed, California vibe is spreading, so are the floors that come with it. And white-washed wood is at the top of the list.

In addition to the California, beachy look, whitewashed floors are also excellent for the now-trending farmhouse style homes (similar to the blonde wood looks we discussed earlier), particularly in the kitchen.

Now, when I saw “whitewashed”, I don’t mean a smooth, finished white floor. Whitewashed wood and wood-look floors typically show signs of wear with the darker colors peeking out from underneath. It fits right in with the aged and worn trends happening across all styles of flooring.

Whitewash will make your home look brighter, bigger, and more relaxed. It can give that “beachy” feel or also an upscale contemporary feel, depending on the rest of your decor.

Over on the east coast, homeowners are still turning their nose up at the whole west coast look and feel. If this trend lasts, it will be regional, at best. If you’re looking for a light wood look, I suggest going for a more versatile blonde look instead.

High color variation is trending in wood (and wood looks) as well as tile. Wood looks typically feature color variation between planks, whereas high variation in tile typically refers to the amount of color variation in each plank.

Homeowners love the natural, rustic look that higher color variation provides. In nature, stone and wood aren’t so uniform; there are all kinds of inconsistencies.

Now, with modern technology, you can achieve these more random, natural looks with laminate, vinyl, engineered wood, ceramic tile, you name it! This makes your kitchen floor more of a statement piece and tends to pair best with simple but contemporary decor.

Over the past few years, we’ve seen a huge resurgence in patterned floors. And it all started in the kitchen!

Unfortunately, when people hear the word “pattern” or the dreaded “parquet” (which, BTW, just means pattern), they imagine the horribly out of date 1970s parquet wood floors. 

The updated, trending parquet looks, however, are anything but dated. This year, you’ll see sleek, upscale, modern patterns in the kitchen and, really, throughout the home.

Some people may think chevron and herringbone are the same. Let’s clear up that misconception. While similar, they have their differences. 

Herringbone pattern floors create a contemporary zig-zag pattern by connecting two planks at a 90-degree angle. This makes your floor look pretty unique, and it’s easy to DIY, so it’s a popular trend with homeowners. 

Chevron floors require flooring to be angled and come together to a point. These floors also feature an arrow-like design, but the planks are angled and come together to a point. 

You can find a lot of products with these patterns already built-in, so you don’t have to put in all that effort during installation. I love it when you can take a shortcut, and no one’s ever going to notice. They’ll all be gushing over your dazzling floor without realizing how easy it was.

This trend isn’t likely to last forever, but it sure looks pretty while it’s here.

And, it will probably stay trendy in the kitchen the longest.

Hexagon tiles first gained popularity in the early 20th century, typically accompanied by subway wall tiles. They can provide a similar classic, vintage look to subway tile floors. They started as smaller, busier-looking tiles, but increasingly larger sizes have made them even more popular.

These days, you’ll see ultra-modern, almost futuristic looks. Imagine super clean, sharp lines, whites, blacks and grays, and very minimalist decor. Even metallics! That’s this new futuristic wave of hexagon kitchen floor tiles.

Sparingly. I do believe you’ll continue to see hexagon tile kitchen floors over the next decade. But, the bigger trend will continue to be larger tiles and planks. This is more of a niche market.

Trickling Pattern Kitchen Flooring

You’ve probably seen this trend on Pinterest. Trickling floor transitions are the hottest new craze and for a good reason. It looks super cool! 

Instead of transitioning to new flooring with a straight line, trickled flooring slowly blends two contrasting flooring types (like tile and planks) so they “trickle” into each other.

This pattern is often achieved with hexagons, but any tile shape will work to create a one-of-a-kind look as you transition from the kitchen to other rooms in your home. It’s the ultimate way to express your creativity.

Maybe! This bold design is not for everyone, but it does add a unique modern touch to any space. My guess is that the trickling floors trend will grow more in the coming years, but never become the go-to option for flooring.

That classic black and white checkered kitchen floor is making a big comeback! Retro and vintage black and white flooring has grown in popularity over the last few years.

Checkered kitchen floors are going to be super trendy in 2022. You’ll see a huge resurgence in everything from this time, including the vintage color accents and that quaint, cozy style.

This refreshed vintage look is a great way to update a smaller kitchen. In those days, most kitchens were half the size of the kitchens we have now and the style fit perfectly into that small, homey space.

Personally, I don’t think it would work so well with a huge open floor plan.

Not for long. I think this is a look that will be super popular with younger, millennial homeowners for several years to come. However, if you’re thinking about long-term resale value with a wealthier market, I would go with a wood look, instead.

Patchwork tiles are a fun new twist on the mosaic trend. Enjoy unique, intricate patterns with the ease of a mix and match design.

The patchwork tile floor trend has evolved from the current obsession with authenticity in design. Who wants a perfectly pristine floor when you can have the personality of a colorful patchwork?

This style leads to a busy-looking floor, that’s for sure. So we recommend you style the rest of your kitchen with neutral colors and simplified lines. With patchwork tiles, your floor does all the talking for you.

Wide Plank Kitchen Flooring

This is one trend you can expect to see every year in every style for the foreseeable future. Longer, wider planks make your kitchen look larger, more open, and less busy.

At this point, short, thin planks look pretty outdated. Going with smaller planks could significantly reduce your home’s resale value. And also, they just won’t look as good.

Now, I do think we’ll get to a point where enough is enough already and we will maintain these new traditional sizes. But, I recommend getting on board with the large plank trend!

Manufacturers are only trending towards even wider and longer planks. This trend will soon become a classic staple and will likely last the test of time.

As opposed to tiny subway tiles, this year you will see plenty of extra-large tiles. Large-format tiles have been trending for quite some time with manufacturers continuing to create larger and larger individual tiles.

Wonder why they’re so popular? Large-format tiles make your kitchen look bigger, especially if you choose a light color. Additionally, larger tiles = fewer grout lines. I hate grout anywhere in the house but especially in the kitchen.

Grout is the one thing that makes cleaning tile kind of a pain. It stains more easily than the tile and, because it’s sunken a bit from the tile, it’s harder to get in there and give it a good scrub.

Without a doubt! Large format tiles and wide planks are here to stay. In the kitchen, and across the home.

This year, texture will be more prevalent than ever before. In addition to wirebrushed and handscraped wood looks, you’ll also start to see more distressed looks in the kitchen.

Because handscraped floors look truly finished, they are trendy not just with younger homeowners but with more established homeowners, as well. Handscraped floors are almost guaranteed to amp up your home value.

You’ll see trendy handscraped wood looks in traditional wood, engineered wood, laminate, vinyl and tile. And, honestly, they’re all in! Each floor just has different advantages so it’s really up to you what you’re looking for.

This unique, individual, handcrafted look will absolutely stand the test of time. It looks expensive, and people love expensive things.

HANDSCRAPED WOOD

Homeowners are loving weathered wirebrushed looks. This trendy look adds character to your floor without looking unfinished.

Another bonus of wirebrushed floors? They hide dirt really well so you don’t have to clean your floors as often! And, if you’re anything like me, that is a huge selling point. Especially in the kitchen.

In 2020, wirebrushed floors were the leading trend in textured flooring. However, moving forward, I anticipate that handscraped and distressed looks will knock them out of the running pretty quickly.

While the wirebrushed floors are cool, if the trend towards imperfections and character continues, distressed and handscraped wood will likely have more to offer in both variety and character.

While I don’t think it will last forever in the entire home, I do think wirebrushed looks will always have a place in the kitchen. Especially with their ability to hide dirt.

However, if you want a seamless floor throughout your home, I would recommend going handscraped instead.

Distressed Wood (and Wood-Look) Kitchen Flooring

People love floors with character and it’s no secret that distressed floors have a whole lot of it!

With intentional scrapes, knotholes, and even burns, distressed floor textures are meant to give your floor character, like it’s much older than it actually is.

Setting the tone with a floor that looks almost historic instantly gives you an envy-inducing decor. Distressed floors make a great pairing with brick walls, fireplaces, stacked stone, farmhouse kitchens, basically every other hot interior design trend going at the moment.

Will the distressed kitchen flooring trend last in 2022 and beyond?

I do believe distressed looks will continue to be popular, particularly with younger generations. However, I don’t anticipate it will spread quite in the same way as handscraped and wirebrushed looks.

If you’re looking at long term resale value, I would choose handscraped looks.
