New cordless vacuum

Best Cordless Vacuum of 2022

In this article:

Vacuuming isn't easy, and lugging a traditional corded vacuum between outlets makes it even harder than it has to be. Cordless vacuums, on the other hand, are lightweight and maneuverable -- without sacrificing the cleaning power of a corded model. Once you make the switch to cordless, it'll be hard to believe how you ever managed to get by without one. To help you find the best cordless vacuum for your needs and your budget, we've tested out 10 leading models from top brands including Dyson, Shark, Tineco, LG and Bissell. You can see our favorites of the bunch below.

Designed for both carpet and hardwood floors, these lightweight vacuums are easy to maneuver over various surfaces. They offer all the convenience of a handheld vacuum while maintaining the cleaning ability and powerful suction of a corded vacuum. The best cordless vacuums are also versatile: Most can handle different types of flooring, from a hardwood floor to a thick carpet, from a bare floor of linoleum to tile, both because they're easy to maneuver and because of their suction power.

When we tested vacuum cleaners, we put them through a rigorous series of floor-care tests on hardwood floor and other bare floor types, carpet and other surfaces. The process took over 150 hours to complete. It also consumed many pounds of sand and rice, plus hundreds of handfuls of pet hair. Based on that, we've determined that the products in this roundup are our picks for the best cordless vacuum for 2022. Keep checking back, because we update this best cordless vacuum list periodically.

Best cordless vacuums in 2022

How we test cordless vacuums

Putting cordless vacuums through their paces isn't as complicated as testing a robot vacuum cleaner, but it still takes lots of time and careful effort to find the best cordless vacuum.

We hauled in 10 of the latest models from leading vacuum brands with high user ratings and reviews, and ran them through a series of tests designed to measure overall proficiency. We also tested cordless vacuums in a range of prices to see how much of a difference you can expect when you opt for a pricier model over a budget pick.

Testing cordless vacuums on different flooring

We run each vacuum in a straight line across three different surfaces (hardwood, low-pile carpet and midpile carpet). On all three test beds, the test area is 30.25 inches long.

The width of the test bed is proportional to the vacuum's nozzle width. We measure this width ourselves. We also use nozzle width, plus the flooring type, to calculate the soil density for each test, per International Electrotechnical Commission guidelines. The IEC is a global standards body responsible for managing testing procedures, among other things, for vacuum manufacturers.

Testing the cleaning ability of each cordless vacuum

We use three types of soil. To simulate small particle size, we use a mix of play sand and landscaping sand. To emulate larger dirt particles, we use uncooked black rice. To see how vacuums deal with pet hair, we use our mixture of clippings sourced to us through our local pet groomer.

We run tests in a straight line across all three floor types.

Brian Bennett/CNET

We perform three runs (at minimum) on each floor type. We also test suction power with sand and rice separately. That comes to at least 18 tests per vacuum. We weigh the vacuum's dust bin both before and after each run.

Other considerations when choosing a cordless vacuum

When choosing the best vacuums in various categories we considered other factors associated with each. We noted any vacuums with especially short battery life or a particularly heavy weight that might make them a less desirable option.

Cordless vacuum battery life and runtime

Most of the vacuums on our list feature a runtime of 40 minutes before needing another charge. The Dyson V15 was the exception with a full 60 minutes of runtime. In truth, it's a rare occasion that one would need more than 40 minutes of runtime for a single vacuuming session. Because of this, battery life was not weighted as heavily as other features.

Cordless vacuum weight, size and bin capacity

All of the cordless vacuums were between 4 and 6 pounds, but none were so heavy that it affected our recommendation. All of the vacuums on this list were also very similar in height and overall size. The Dyson models are both roughly 49 inches while the Tineco A11 is shorter at just 43 inches tall.

The Dysons and Tineco all have bin volumes of about 0.6 liters. Our budget pick, the Moosoo XL-618A, has double that capacity (1. 3 liters) so you'll need to empty the bin less often.

Cordless vacuum warranties

The standard warranty for cordless vacuums is a two-year limited warranty and each vacuum on this list meets that standard. In general, you should expect your cordless vacuum to last longer than two years but it's nice to have a backup plan in case something breaks within that time frame.

Other cordless vacuums we tested that didn't make the cut

Here's a list of the other cordless stick vacuums we tested besides the models we've recommended above.

Cordless vacuum FAQs

Which cordless vacuum has the most suction power?

Right now, based on our tests, the cordless vacuum with the best suction power is the Dyson V15 Detect. It removed the most sand, rice and pet hair out of all the stick vac cleaners we've evaluated so far. And it did so across multiple floor types.

Are pricey Dyson vacuums worth the money?

One company, in particular, saw this cordless trend coming. British company Dyson was the first to pioneer this field with a series of capable -- yet pricey -- Cyclone V series stick vacs designed with impressive suction and cleaning power to leave the competition in the dust. Rivals have since followed suit and now sell cordless vacuums of their own. Some manufacturers of cordless vacuum cleaners have even shamelessly cloned Dyson products. Others are distinctive new riffs on the cordless vacuum, with innovative dust-busting features all their own.

Despite the many knockoffs, Dyson vacs still perform at a higher level than other brands, in our experience. Perhaps it's the head start it's had in refining these smaller machines or the extensive research and development that goes into making them.

Dysons are pricey, but worth the money if you have it to spend. If not, there are plenty of cheaper cordless vacuums that will do the job and keep your home clean.

How long should a cordless vacuum last?

Each of the cordless vacuums on our list includes a two-year limited warranty but a quality model should last you significantly longer than that. That said, cordless vacuums do take a beating and you shouldn't expect any model to last much longer than five years if used regularly. This is certainly something to consider when selecting a model.

Having your vacuum serviced after the warranty has expired may not also be worth the money, depending on the particular issue. To suss out any potential lemons, we dig through buyer reviews on multiple retailers to see if any vacuum brands or models have consistent breakage issues, either with the motor or external parts.

Why you should trust us

Our team of CNET experts, editors and lab technicians has been testing vacuums in a smart home and testing warehouse located in Louisville, Kentucky, for over 10 years. In that time, we've refined our testing methods and assessments in a controlled environment to measure the proficiency of robot vacuums, full-sized models and cordless stick vacuums alike. Roidmi R10 cordless vacuum cleaner review

TechRadar Verdict

The Roidmi R10 is an affordable lightweight cordless vacuum that cleans hard floors with ease. It’s stylish, and has won awards to prove it, and can be converted into a handheld cleaner too, but we were disappointed by its suction power on carpet and the battery life, as you’ll only get 10 minutes of cleaning on the highest power level.

TODAY'S BEST DEALS

Why you can trust TechRadar Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test.

Roidmi is a relatively new brand as it was founded in China in 2015 and it's fast becoming one worth considering alongside floorcare stalwarts Dyson and Miele, as it offers robot vacuums along with some of the best cordless vacuums that have high-end specs but more affordable price points.

The Roidmi R10, which was previously called the Roidmi S1E, is the brand’s lightest cordless vacuum cleaner, weighing in at just 2.4kg. Like other Roidmi vacuum cleaners, including the RS60, the handle curves around the main body - ensuring it’s comfortable to hold whether it’s used to clean the floor or suck cobwebs from up high.

Should I buy?

The floor cleaning head has a soft brush bar, so hard floors won’t be damaged during cleaning, while Roidmi says plastic teeth located in the cleaning head dislodge any pet or human hairs so they don’t get tangled around the brush bar.

It’s a good-looking cordless vacuum -  the six design awards it has won are testament to that but with just two power levels - many of the best vacuum cleaners have three - and a maximum suction of 90W, it’s not quite as powerful as other cordless vacuums we’ve tested.

The Roidmi R10 has a triple filtration system including a removable HEPA filter, which the brand says captures 99% of dust, hair, and allergens as small as 0.3microns in size, and a battery that will last up to 40 minutes between charges, depending on the power settings used.

Compared to other cordless vacuums, the Roidmi R10 is more wallet-friendly at $299 / £269 / AU$499 - but does this mean you’re compromising on its ability to clean?  We put it to the test to find out.

Roidmi R10 cordless vacuum cleaner price and availability

The Roidmi R10, which was originally known as the Roidmi S1E until it was re-branded at the start of 2021, is priced at $299 / £269 / AU$499, and is available worldwide from Amazon under its original name, and Harrods under the R10 moniker. In the UK it’s also available from Roidmi’s own website.

The Roidmi R10 is a versatile cordless vacuum cleaner that can also be converted into a handheld device by detaching the canister from the main wand and using one of the three tools it comes with including a motorized mattress brush.

Extremely lightweight - the Roidmi R10 weighs just 1.3kg in handheld mode and 2.4kg when the wand and cleaning head are connected,  it’s also one of the most compact cordless vacuums we’ve tested.

There’s a power button on the front of the handle and below this are five LEDs that indicate the battery level, while a button on the top allows you to switch between the two suction levels. The R10 ships with one cleaning head that has a soft brush bar so it can be used to clean both carpets and hard floors without causing any damage. As we’ve already mentioned, the cleaning head has a number of plastic teeth that sit adjacent to the brush bar to dislodge any pet or human hairs before they get tangled around it.

The dust canister has a 0.1-gallon / 0.4-liter capacity, while the HEPA filter can be removed and cleaned with the cleaning tool, although it’s not washable so will need to be replaced every three months. An extra HEPA filter is included in the box to soften the blow.

Performance

Quick and easy to assemble, the Roidmi R10 is a breeze to get going and, in our tests, performed best on hard floors - whipping away fine dust, cereal and rice in seconds on the most powerful setting. While it glided easily on both hard floors and carpets, we were left disappointed with its carpet-cleaning ability -  we found there was still dust left after one sweep on the most powerful setting, and we needed the crevice tool to remove all dust from the edges.

Converting the vacuum into handheld mode and back again was simple, thanks to the click-in design of the various components, which all feel well made and sturdy. The LED lights on the front go some way to identify when the battery needs charging, but we’d have liked to see the remaining run-time in minutes - a feature offered by some vacuums, such as the Dyson V15 Detect Absolute.

We found the R10 is a little fiddly to empty, as the wand and attachments need to be removed and the canister disconnected from the handle and main unit. However, once this has been done, a single button press opens the canister and ejects the dirt.

The vacuum was loud when used on the most powerful setting, with our decibel meter hitting 83db, which is equivalent to a truck traveling down the road at 40mph, making it one of the loudest cordless vacuums we’ve tested.

Battery life

We’ve mentioned already that the battery lasts up to 40 minutes between charges, but that’s on the lowest power setting; if the cleaner is used on the most powerful setting the battery life drops to just 10 minutes. The R10 also comes with a magnetic wall charger to make powering-up the vacuum easier.

Should I buy the Roidmi R10 cordless vacuum cleaner?

Buy it if...

 ou’re on a budget
At more than half the cost of similarly-spec cordless cleaners from the likes of Dyson and Miele, the Roidmi R10 represents great value for money and is ideal if you’re on a budget.

You want a lightweight vacuum
At just 1.3kg in handheld mode, and only 2.4kg when the wand and cleaning head are attached, this is one of the lightest cordless vacuums we’ve tested.

You have a smaller home
This cordless vacuum has one of the smaller capacities on the market as the dust canister that can only hold up to 0.1-gallon / 0.4-liter of debris, so is best suited to smaller homes.

Don't buy it if...

You don’t want a loud vacuum
As loud as a truck doing 40mph, the Roidmi R10 is one of the noisiest cordless vacuums we’ve tested and should if loud appliances irritate you.

You have a carpet-only home
The Roidmi R10 left us a little disappointed with its cleaning performance on carpets, so if your home only has soft floors, affordable cleaners from the likes of Shark or Hoover will prove a better choice for your home.

You want a clear battery level
Hate your vacuum cleaner running out of battery mid-clean? Then avoid this vacuum cleaner, as we found the LED lights on the front weren’t very accurate when it came to gauging how much run-time was left.

Automatic dust bin cleaning

When the vacuum cleaner is placed on the docking station, the contents of the dust bin are automatically sucked into the dust bag, after which the suction air flows through the 3-stage cleaning system. As a result, the air leaving the docking station is cleaned of the smallest dust particles. Debris and dust trapped in the dust bag are disinfected with a UV lamp installed inside the docking station. The UV lamp works for 2 hours after the vacuum cleaner is installed on the station, reducing the amount of bacteria in the dust bag inside.

After the cleaning process is completed, the vacuum cleaner located at the station starts recharging. And during the cleaning process in the docking station, there is a spare battery on charge, which extends the cleaning time to 120 minutes. Finally, the docking station is also a storage system, where there is a place for all the attachments.
