how to make a vertical garden with your own hands

A phytowall or vertical gardens can be an unusual home greenhouse and add oxygen to your living space. You do not need to arrange flower pots around the room, choose the right planters and place. The green wall will replace the usual plants on the windowsills and shelves and become a bright accent in the interior. Eliott and Kelly Dunn, founders of DIY resource Dalla Vita, shared how to create such a garden with your own hands.

Wall preparation

For starters, you need to decide on a location. Vertical gardens can be placed not only indoors, but also outdoors - as a seasonal decoration of a recreation area in the local area. The scale of the work depends on the size of the allotted space.

The selected wall must be carefully prepared: the street wall must be cleaned of dirt, the wall in the house or apartment must be covered with a waterproof base. So it will be possible to protect the surface from the possible release of moisture.

For planting plants, you can take wooden boxes, containers for seedlings, or the most budgetary and easy-to-make felt pockets. It's easy to make them yourself. Then, using screws, the containers should be placed on the selected wall.

Choice of greens

Designers recommend choosing unpretentious plants that do not need direct sunlight. They are easier to take care of. Plants from the bromeliad and aroid families are suitable - satin or royal pothos, fern, agave, dracaena, as well as succulents.

Materials and tools

To create a phytowall you will need:

In the project, the Dalla Vita design team used four blocks with felt pockets. It is necessary to divide the planting into cells in order to evenly distribute the load and improve the fit of the future vertical garden to the wall. Each individual panel is attached to the surface with screws from all sides.

Foundation installation

To hang the panels, you will need a concrete drill and a puncher. Use them to make holes. Then, with a drill or a screwdriver, it is necessary to screw in the screws. For additional structural support, it is better to use fasteners with washers.

Landing

The next step is to create the green composition itself. Plants should be placed in felt pockets: fill the soil, plant seedlings, pour a little water. The size of the flowers also depends on the volume of the pockets, so the felt blank should be made in accordance with the desired scale of the plants.

A finished vertical garden needs to be looked after. It will take about a week to understand which plants have taken root and which should be replaced. The felt design will allow you to remove individual flowers and plant new ones without disturbing the whole composition.

Care for the phytowall is the same as for houseplants - water several times a week, periodically cut off the leaves, spray with water.
