10 bathroom ideas with white tiles |
White bathroom tile ideas can be used to create a crisp, clean and timeless room scheme or they can serve as a neutral backdrop to boldly colored or patterned accents. They go with just about everything, make a room feel lighter and brighter and are less likely to date than a heavily decorated design.
White bathroom tiles come in a choice of materials including porcelain, ceramic, natural stone, cement and glass mosaic, and in many different shades, from warm to cool. They also come in a choice of finishes, from polished and semi-polished to imaginatively textured to matt and velvety smooth – all of which means bathroom ideas galore for your remodel.
Below, we show you our favorite white bathroom tile ideas so that you can get the look just right.
White bathroom tile ideas
Bathroom tile ideas' sizes vary, as do laying patterns, offering a surprising variety of choice, and making it perfectly possible to add character and interest to your room, however seemingly simple the white bathroom tile.
1. Add interest to white bathroom tile ideas with pattern
If you are looking to add interest to white bathroom ideas, simple square tiles are a clean, utilitarian classic – here they are given a contemporary update with the addition of modern pattern.
Danish brand Vipp has recently opened its fourth hotel destination, this one on the island of Lolland, a two-hour drive from Copenhagen. Its interior is designed by Julie Cloos Mølsgaard who has used white bathroom tile ideas from File Under Pop – each tile with a raised pattern and fixed in a balanced order – to add a note of quirky modern interest and character.
2. Use shape to introduce character
If you are looking for bathroom backsplash ideas with real interest, take note: interior designer Alison Henry teamed fittings from Drummonds with Statuario marble hexagon mosaics on the floor and walls to create a sense of elegance and charm.
As she explains, ‘I wanted to make the room feel light and bright, to play on the textures and to contrast the hexagon mosaics with the slabs of the same marble used on the vanity and bathtub surround. As there is both a window and a roof light in this room, there is lots of natural light which creates interesting shadows and movement on the marble. The mosaics make the room feel luxurious and yet quite relaxed, creating a spa-like look accentuated by the soft towels and decorative accessories.’
3. Make use of a layout pattern
(Image credit: D+D Home and Armelle Habib Photography)
White bathroom tile ideas can be given texture and interest with an intricate layout pattern. Here, Carrara marble brick tiles, laid in a herringbone pattern, add classic style and boost the sense of space in this slender room by continuing up the far wall.
The small format of the tile and the extra grout on the floor have the added benefit of reducing the slipperiness of the surface too. The traditional style Cheshire freestanding tub is by Victoria + Albert Baths , shown here in an interior design by D+D Home Australia – a wonderful example of how to create marble bathroom ideas without being too grand.
4. Mix white bathroom tile ideas with wood
Need shower tile ideas? In this serene design by Studio Gild , white subway bathroom tile is teamed with a wood vanity to introduce a touch of natural warmth. The brushed white oil finish of the timber not only highlights the beauty of the wood grain, it also echoes the cool tones of the room scheme.
Classic white marble bathroom floor tile ideas add another natural element and accentuate the mixed material approach.
5. Layer the whites
If you are looking for tile ideas for a small bathroom, all-white will, of course, enhance space visually – but needn't be dull.
‘White on white on white can create a layered effect that softens the monotone look and prevents a stark result, especially when combined in different formats and finishes,’ advises Louisa Morgan, creative director of Mandarin Stone .
Here, Albion white matte ceramic wall tile in a square format are teamed with polished porcelain floor tiles in a rectangular shape and honed stone cube mosaics to surround the bath.
6. Focus on the finish
The glossy crackle finish of these Architectonic ceramic field tiles in Pin Welt design from Waterworks add a subtle lift to simple white bathroom tile ideas. Their handmade beauty adds character to the all-white scheme, while their gleaming surface reflects light and accentuates the bright and elegant feel of the room – if you are searching gray bathroom tile ideas, this are a wonderfully light-reflecting option. They are teamed here with a Julia faucet in a polished nickel finish, also by Waterworks.
7. Use white bathroom tile ideas as a clean backdrop
‘Large format white tiles won’t compete with other designs, but will act as a wonderful base to build on,’ explains Grazzie Wilson, creative lead at Ca’Pietra . These Delicate porcelain tiles are shown here in 23x47inch (60x120cm) format and satin finish, used to create a fuss-free backdrop to a striking monochrome scheme.
‘From a practical point of view, large format porcelain tiles are low maintenance, easy to clean and will look as good tomorrow as they do today,’ she continues. ‘A large white tile makes a room feel lighter and brighter, opening up the space with fewer grout lines, and acting as a complementary tile for any other choices in the room – from patterns and prints to tiles with intricate detailing. ’
9. Combine white with warm-colored metal
Proof that white need not be flat comes in the shape of these handmade zellige wall tiles, their soft shades complemented by the mellow metal Pinna Paletta shower fittings by Kallista from West One Bathrooms .
‘The undulating tones of white with variations of cream and gold in the tiles soften and warm up the whole space, acting as a wonderful backdrop to the unlacquered brass fittings,’ says West One Bathrooms designer Kaitlin Reading.
9. Think in terms of texture
It can be tricky to find a wall tile to work well with a patterned encaustic floor tile. Plain white may feel clinical, while color or more pattern may just be too much. One solution – white tiles with texture, as shown here with an Aqata framed shower panel from Ripples , which features a reeded glass to accentuate the focus on tactile finishes.
An unusual format or pattern can add movement or theater, perhaps unexpected for a white tile. These Craze porcelain tiles from Ann Sacks at West One Bathrooms feature a glass-like glaze to create a crackle design inspired by ancient pots found in Mediterranean countries. A contrasting dark grout highlights the random shapes, while a matching grout would make the effect less dramatic – the choice is yours.
What goes with white tile in a bathroom?
White tile can be used to set off a striking focal point, such as a colored bath tub or vanity, or to make a fresh backdrop to bright accents, such as a patterned linen blind or colorful wallpaper. Combine them with some areas of painted wall in classic sea blue for a tranquil feel, or with black fittings to make a smart and monochrome Art Deco look. For an instant lift, add colorful towels and accessories.
Are white bathroom floor tiles a good idea?
Light and bright white floor tile usually works well in most bathrooms, but particularly so in smaller rooms, reflecting light to boost the sense of space. White porcelain tiles work particularly well, since they are durable, water resistant and easy to clean, but make sure to check that they have an anti-slip finish before purchase.

apartment with LAVANDOY

APARTMENT WITH LAVANDOY To please yourself - it's so right! Especially when the main tasks are solved, the tastes have formed, and you can first of all be guided in the choice by yourself. Here you can apply non-standard solutions, and play with color ... For a bright family couple of elegant age, an unusual interior is also needed, corresponding to their inner world, taste and hobbies. I must say that they seriously approached the work on the arrangement of an apartment with an area of about 70 m², which is supposed to come from a country house for some time. So, the customers approved the proposed lavender tones, and they immediately filled the combined space of the kitchen-living room. The kitchen set has acquired a non-standard color, which is supported by the upholstery of upholstered furniture and accessories. The abundance of plant motifs and stucco decor refer us to the European elegant style in this interior, and lavender is very useful here! And the noble shades of the parquet board perfectly set off the textiles, the shape of the lamps and the elegant decor of the furniture with gilding. Gold with patina is another strong theme of this interior. Entering the ensemble in the lobby, it passes through the entire interior, creating an atmosphere of refined luxury, elegant and in this case not boring at all. A competent backlight puts accents in the right places. The bedroom at first glance resembles the imperial chambers. An elegant carved headboard, gold with patina on the walls, the same technique in finishing cabinet furniture... However, it is worth noting that gold is present here in a more restrained version, not protruding, but rather emphasizing the taste of the one to whom this interior is addressed. The fur cover on the bed adds tenderness, and the glossy wardrobe doors seem to dissolve in space, giving way to the historical dominant. The bathroom is designed to the specified standards. The tone is set by the nautical theme, expressed in the main shades of finishes, as well as decor, which continues the European theme. There was no need to install a bath, instead a spacious shower cabin was equipped.

To understand whether a light tile is suitable for your interior, you need to weigh all the advantages and disadvantages of such a finish.
Pluses
- Visually enlarges the space, fills it with air, reflects light. Therefore, it is an ideal solution for small rooms where only a few square meters are available. In addition, in urban bathrooms, as a rule, there are no windows, so it is important to compensate for the lack of natural light.
- Universal in every sense. Snow-white finish is suitable for rooms of any size and shape, fits into all styles and goes equally well with different colors, textures, materials.
- Dirt is less noticeable. It is believed that such a surface is more easily soiled, but it is in the context of the bathroom that the rule works the other way around: limescale, soap film, traces of powder and detergents are usually light, so they will be less noticeable.
- This is the perfect base. It is not for nothing that the walls in art galleries are made light and monochromatic - the snow-white background does not distort the perception of other colors and emphasizes their depth. And if you want to quickly update the interior, it will be enough to add a few bright accents in the form of decor - and you won’t have to do repairs.
- Too simple and boring - the main argument of opponents of light ceramics. Indeed, if you lay out the walls and the floor with standard square snow-white tiles, you get a flat “hospital” interior. Avoiding this is easy: just add a couple of other shades to the palette, use several textures, play with the size, shape and method of laying tiles. And, of course, do not forget about accents.
- Boundaries are blurred in a monochrome space - some may feel uncomfortable in a total white interior, especially if the surfaces are lined with the same monochromatic material. To add volume to the space, the difference in textures, contrasting dark details and ornament will help. You can also lay a rug on the floor.
Shape
Classic shape - square or rectangle. The first one once went out of fashion as a relic of Soviet interiors, but in recent years it has begun to regain popularity. Matte snow-white or milky squares look stylish, and you can add graphics to the walls or floor with the help of black or colored grout.

The vertical layout looks interesting, especially if the parts are elongated or small in size. By the way, rectangular tiles can visually change the proportions of the room: horizontal laying will expand the space, and vertical laying will add height to the room. A separate subspecies of a rectangular shape is the “boar”, which is light convex bricks. This finish has long passed into the category of classics and looks best in white.

The hexagon also remains relevant. It can be combined with other shapes or finishing materials, and the so-called honeycombs look especially fashionable - small hexagonal tiles. It is suitable for a bathroom of any size, but it is better not to lay out all four walls from floor to ceiling with it so that it does not ripple in the eyes. The classic square mosaic also has a place to be, but so that the interior does not look old-fashioned, it is better to choose plain matte details.

There are three main formats
- Standard - 60x60 or 60x120 cm. Largest selection in stores, suitable for any size room.
- Small - squares or hexagons up to 1.5 cm on a side. Suitable for small and medium rooms, can be lost in a large room. Good for facing corners and other complex shapes.
- Large - slabs with a side of up to 3 m. In this format, as a rule, porcelain stoneware is sold, but ordinary tiles are also found. Contrary to the opinion that large details look only in large spaces, such plates can also be used in small rooms. In order not to draw attention to the size, it is better to choose seamless models that fit closely.

Combination with another finish does not have to be Kerami
There are several successful finish combinations for white bathroom tiles.
Paint
The most frequent companion. It must necessarily be moisture resistant, not be afraid of temperature changes, as well as exposure to steam. For painting, they usually give the upper part of the walls and relatively dry areas - for example, where the sink, toilet or storage system is located. This combination makes the interior more interesting and saves on building materials.
The surface can be painted in a rich color or in a more discreet pastel tone. In the first case, you get a juicy bright accent that will add color to the space, in the second - a more restrained design, close to monochrome.

Wood
Wood is good friends with snow-white ceramics. Natural wood is rarely used in the bathroom, because it is afraid of water and requires a high-quality protective coating. Much more often, designers resort to various imitations: from MDF panels to the same ceramics with a wood texture.
Depending on the overall style, wood and its imitation can be used in decoration, furniture or decorative elements.

Wallpaper
Moisture-resistant wallpaper in the bathroom is usually used accentuated. Most often, they allocate one wall or part of it, for example, behind the sink, at the door or in the storage area. A win-win combination: plain white tiles and multi-colored wallpapers with small or large contrasting ornaments.

Finally, let’s take a look at photos of several Russian projects in which designers approached the use of light-coloured tiles in completely different ways in the design of the bathroom.
1. Playing with textures
More and more bathroom designs are moving away from mono-finishing and using multiple materials, textures and colors. This project is a prime example of such a combination. Three main elements coexist in the room: deep gray-blue paint, figured light tiles, pronounced wood texture.
Moisture-resistant paint used in dry areas and on the upper part of the walls, below the perimeter there is a small white tile. Here, the authors of the project used an interesting trick: instead of laying out a fairly large area with the same hexagon, in some places it was diluted with a chevron. Due to the partial similarity of the forms, an original effect was obtained: the finish seems to stretch upwards, smoothly changing its appearance.
Otherwise, a large amount of white visually enlarges the space and balances the rather dark color of the paint. And the tree, due to its natural warm texture, adds coziness to the room. Complements its fittings under the precious metal.
- Mustard-colored wall panels, behind which communications are hidden (the toilet bowl is matched to them).
- Large slabs of porcelain stoneware covering the walls and floor of a spacious shower box.
- Small rectangular tiles in the basin area.
Despite the neutral color, the wall in the part of the bathroom where the washbasin is located turned out to be accented thanks to small tiles, vertical arrangement and contrasting grout. It is echoed by textured black details that unite all types of finishes.

3. Monochrome and neon proves that the monochrome range can also exist as an independent unit. It is not necessary to dilute it with other shades - you can work with lines, contrast and textures, and also add an unusual technique, as the authors of this project did.
Designers designed the combined bathroom completely in light colors: ceramics on the wall, installation, floor and ceiling, plumbing to match it. This abundance of snow-white is diluted with black, which adds volume to the space and creates dynamics, drawing lines and boundaries of planes.
The third color is also here - but it does not appear in the decoration or furniture facades. As a colorful accent, LED lighting with a neon purple tint is used, which is combined with accessories. As a result, the mood of the room changes literally at the click of a finger: a bright, almost sterile bathroom turns into a bright futuristic space, as soon as you change the lighting mode. This technique is also good because at any time you can change the color of the bulbs and create a completely different atmosphere in the bathroom.
Such tinted lighting is not the easiest to implement. To avoid the effect of a photo lab, you need to think over several different lighting scenarios and textures on which the light will fall. So, in this bathroom, designers used mirror and transparent glass surfaces that reflect light and make it voluminous. The decoration in this case is monophonic, without contrasting elements, as neutral as possible, since it performs the function of a blank canvas.
6At the same time, the interior does not seem empty and boring. This is achieved through several approaches.
- Contrasting dark grout that echoes black hardware and fine details.
- A combination of tiles of different shapes and sizes.
- Warm wood texture used for furniture fronts.
