Modern spare bedroom ideas

29 spare room ideas for every kind of house | House & Garden

Is there anything more quietly luxurious than having a spare room? Whether you choose to keep the spare room ready to accommodate overnight guests or transform the space into a multi-functional at-home office or gym, there are plenty of ways to make your spare room sing. As designer Rita Konig says, “when decorating houses, I find guest bedrooms are the most liberating to design. On one hand, there is less pressure for them to be fabulous; on the other, they don’t have to be something you will not tire of, so you can be more adventurous.”

When designing your spare room, it is important to take into consideration your lifestyle and home habits, as well as the physicality of the room. Indeed, there are all sorts of “spare” rooms: what is deemed an extra room in a city flat may simply be a small nook, for example, whereas larger houses may boast multiple well-appointed guest bedrooms, each complete with an en-suite bath. Should the spare room you’re decorating be on the diminutive side, see it as an opportunity to be bold with colour and pattern. For larger spare bedrooms, it is essential to make sure the space feels as much like a beautiful bedroom in which your overnight guests feel comfortable and at home.

When it comes to decorating a spare room, it is essential to treat it as your own, so that overnight guests can relax and feel at home – even if the room is multi-functional. What do you need in your own room, and how can you replicate that on a smaller scale for your guests? Are you bent on having black-out drapery? How about bookshelves? Do you like waking up to artwork or falling asleep in a room painted in calming colours? Should size be an issue in your spare room, consider installing beds with built-in storage, sectioning curtains for added privacy and open clothes storage such as hooks or hanging rails in lieu of bulky wardrobes.

We’ve put together a checklist for putting together a spare room, with each point sourced from our favourite designers and the House & Garden archive. Be inspired and remember to have fun with decorating your spare room.

‘Non-negotiables’ in a spare room

While all spare rooms are not created equal, there are a few key components to the ideal one…

Deep sleep-worthy beds

First things first, make sure the bed is comfortable. “Very few people sleep in their guest bed and so they have no idea how comfortable it is,” says designer Nina Campbell. “Everyone should spend one night in their own spare room.”

Comfortable seating

“A good armchair for guests to curl up in is a lovely idea if you have the space,” says ex-House & Garden decoration editor and designer Gabby Deeming.

Say adieu to bulky wardrobes

Hanging space is more useful to friends staying with you than a chest of drawers. Make sure there are plenty of coat hooks and if you don't have room for a wardrobe, consider a clothes rail. A clothes rail with a shelf, like the ‘Antwerp’ model from Swoon is ideal for folded items, shoes and bags. Alternatively, fill it with wicker baskets for a neater look.

Give guests a surface to ready (or write a thank-you note!)

“Every guest room needs a work surface of some kind, be it to use as a dressing table or a desk,” says Veere Grenney.

Great suitcase stowage is key

Somewhere for guests to easily access their bags can make a huge difference when it comes to short stays. Foldable luggage racks are best, as they can be hidden away when not in use.

Get playful with bins

“An attractive rubbish bin should be top of the list of practical accessories for a guest room,” adds Veere. “We often get ours custom-made to match the decor.” This wooden one can be painted to blend with the colour scheme.

Mirrors, mirrors on the wall…

The main ingredients for a successful guest room are echoed in the items that are required in your own bedroom. A good-size mirror is one of the fundamentals: choose one to match the style of the room.

Soft, warm lighting is key

A good bedside lamp is very important. A slim, unobtrusive floor lamp, which also functions as a bookstand, is a witty addition where there is little space for a table or bookshelf.

Perfect spare room bonuses

Now that you've equipped your spare room with the bare necessities, consider elevating the space with a few of these extra touches your guests will appreciate.

Carafes: a chic – and appreciated – touch

Make sure that there is a supply of water for your guests a carafe or water bottle is a must-have accessory for any spare room.

Let guests luxuriate in fluffy cotton

“A fluffy robe for guests to throw over their nightwear is a nice touch,” says ex-House & Garden locations editor Lavinia Bolton. A crisp, white dressing gown will add a sense of luxury to the most austere spare room.

Let guests be their own DJ

A sound system in a guest room is no longer a luxury. Choose a useful little digital radio that also streams music from an iPhone and acts as a charger, and is compact enough to fit into the smallest of spare rooms.

20 spare room ideas to inspire your space

1. Create a very country, cozy chill out zone

Woodburning stove. Check. Armchair you could get lost in. Check. Dark, moody, sophisticated color scheme. Check. This is a great look for a spare room and provides a perfect secluded spot for anyone who needs to have a breather, after a long day.

2. Choose a daybed that gives you options

Having a bed that can double up as a sofa, or that can actually be stacked is really useful. So you can buy one bed, but then stack a second (and third) on top, so that whenever you need extra sleep or seating space, it's right there, taking up no more space than a single bed.

In the above picture is a daybed, while below it's two Scandi-style singles, and then a sofa, and a day bed. So, whichever way you want to place them, a well selected bed can suit your bedroom design, or spare room design seamlessly.

Oh, and of course, it can become a double. ..

3. Revamp a guest bedroom with bright paint

While you may be reticent about going too bold with the bedroom color scheme in your own bedroom, having a spare room is a fantastic opportunity to be more daring with paint color and pattern. Paint a feature wall in a really out there color (something like Farrow and Ball's Vardo would do the trick) in a guest bedroom to make the space sing.

4. Turn a downstairs spare room into a bar lounge

SKY DOWN! I repeat, Sky down 😱 After watching the first episode of Shipwrecked last night, the Sky box decided it wasn’t going to connect to the Q Box any more (I have no idea what this means 🙄) and in the absence of Joe, we were stuffed. He’s not back until later tonight so we’re still an episode behind 😬 ANYWAY, who else is watching? Thoughts so far? We’re liking Liv and the seven foot blonde guy whose name we’ve already forgotten 😂🏝 . . Transform your spare room – particularly if it's downstairs, maybe in a garage conversion – and you could have an intimate cocktail bar in your own home! Pick characterful furniture, add a bar cart or wine rack, and you're ready to impress your guests.

If you can't be as extra as Lisa Dawson and actually build a full on bar in your spare room, check out our pick of the best bar carts and how to style them instead.

5.

Create a home office in your spare room

Spare bedrooms tend to be on the smaller side, but most will fit a desk and a chair, especially if you opt for a space-saving day bed rather than a full-sized double bed. Add a stylish lamp and you have your own writer's nook, or mini home office.

6. Use it as a sewing room

Good with the sewing machine? Those rolls of fabric, mannequins and sewing apparatus sure take up a lot of space. With the luxury of a spare room, you can create a craft studio. Mix and match storage units, storage boxes and baskets to create a tidy space.

7. Turn a spare space into a library

If you don't need a dedicated guest bedroom, how about investing in a home library instead? Create a dedicated book storage area with bespoke shelving or freestanding bookcases.

Bespoke library shelving by Neville Johnson is used in this spare room to create a perfect reading space.

8. Repurpose your spare room into a home gym

Whatever your workout of choice, your spare room is a good place to burn some calories if you build a home gym. Invest in the best home gym equipment, such as a treadmill or punch bag for relieving end of day stress. As Pottery Barn demonstrates here, a home gym needn’t lack style.

9. Turn your spare room into a playroom

If your children are young and the spare room is downstairs, making it into a playroom is a great idea. Swap out the bed for a cheaper sofa bed and put in plenty of toy storage to keep the space neat for your little ones to run wild, but in an organized fashion.

In busy households, a decent craft/homework station is one of the best spare room ideas around. Making it a dedicated spot to store gift wrap, cards and stationery, homework folders and pens. A gift wrapping station alone might sound extravagant, but it won't just come in useful at Christmas – think birthdays and other occasions too! If you aren't sold, then combine it with something more useful (like a homework desk) and it'll be very practical.

11. Reserve your spare bedroom for dressing

If you don’t have the square footage for a dressing table in your bedroom, reserve a space in your spare room to store your beauty essentials – and call it a dressing room. For more dressing room ideas, we have a whole feature to get you inspired.

12. Use the spare room for a walk-in wardrobe

What could be more indulgent than a bespoke walk-in wardrobe? If your own bedroom is severely lacking in storage space, you could create a walk-in wardrobe in the spare bedroom instead.

13. Go multi-purpose with a sofa bed

When overnight guests are few and far between, a great sofa bed really comes into its own, allowing you to reserve the spare room for use as an office or relaxation area, instead of a dedicated bedroom.

14. Create a snug in a downstairs room

On extra cold days, it has be best to heat one smaller downstairs bedroom than trying (and failing) to keep the whole house warm. Install a woodburning stove – perfect for small, snug room spaces – and curl up with a book or your favorite TV show.

15. Convert the spare room into a home cinema

Make staying in the new going out with a home cinema room.. All you really need is some good seating – think a sofa and some beanbags (see our pick of the best beanbags) – and a blank wall to project films onto. Plus an obligatory bar cart, or popcorn machine.

16. Create a comfortable retreat

Create the ultimate escape for your guests – or yourself – by giving your spare room a 5 star hotel-worthy makeover. Quality bedlinen is key. The White Company has everything you could possibly need in this department – their Brompton bed linen is a gorgeous choice.

17. Turn it into a laundry room

Even an upstairs spare room can be turned into a utility room. And while we might not advise storing food and drink up there, miles from the kitchen – impractical to say the least – it can be really useful as a laundry room. You'll need to look into plumbing costs for a cold water supply at the minimum, and for drainage, but it will mean that dirty washing stays upstairs and gets returned to bedrooms without ever cluttering up the downstairs of your home.

18. Or turn a spare room into a boot room

Having a boot room is one of the most practical spare room ideas, especially if you only have a small space to work with, and if it so happens to be located near your front (or back) door.

Much like the name implies, this will be a place to store shoes, wellies, dog beds, umbrellas, that sort of thing. If you have got the room you could always add a sink and double it up as a utility room.

19. Make your spare room a space for wellbeing

Into yoga? Need a quiet space? Why not decorate your spare room in soothing tones (think creams, warm browns, honey, terracotta), and make it into a yoga studio? All you need is a yoga app on your phone, a yoga mat and a decent room temperature.

A beautiful and cozy bedroom is the key to a good sleep and good mood in the morning. So the design of this room should be given special attention: choose the color scheme of the interior and suitable furniture, think over the lighting and the location of functional areas.

In this review with a selection of photos from 2016 and 2017 from the portfolio of the Fundament Group of Companies, we will talk about modern ideas in bedroom design, popular decorating techniques and design features of modern and classic interiors.

Modern color solutions in the design of bedrooms

The right color scheme will help make the bedroom cozy. The priority is neutral gray and beige shades, pure white, a calm palette with bright accents. And in order not to make a mistake in choosing a color solution, it is necessary to take into account the area and illumination of the room.

1. Beige

In the photo: Beige bedroom design

An elegant beige color scheme is often used in the design of bedrooms. The secret of its popularity is its versatility - the design in beige tones is suitable for both a modern bedroom and a classic interior. In addition, a warm palette of cream, coffee, chocolate and caramel hues pairs well with gold and silver accessories and is a guarantee of coziness, which is very important for a bedroom.

2. Shades of blue

In the photo: Blue accents in the interior of the bedroom in a modern style

Blue shades in the design of the bedroom create a peaceful atmosphere and add notes of spring freshness to the interior. And they look most advantageous in combination with golden accessories and cream textiles with mother-of-pearl shine.

3. White bedroom - fashionable interior trend

In the photo: White bedroom interior

White color is a recognized favorite in the design of the bedroom in 2017. It expands the space, causes a surge of energy and is ideal for the design of a bedroom with floor-to-ceiling windows, as in the photo of 2017. And in order for this color to reveal its full potential, the designers of the Fundament Group of Companies it is advised to use different shades of white for decorating one room: milky, snowy, linen, ivory.

4. Turquoise accents in an urban interior

Pictured: Turquoise accents in a loft-style bedroom

Juicy accents of turquoise color are what you need for the design of a modern bedroom. They harmonize well with all shades of gray and look advantageous against the background of finishes with the texture of concrete. And to add color to a minimalist interior, just pick up a couple of suitable turquoise accessories: Roman blinds or curtains, bed linen or decorative pillows.

5. Gray monochrome

In the photo: Minimalism in gray tones

The combination of several shades of gray in the design of the bedroom is a good solution when it comes to the interior in the style of minimalism. or high-tech. The main thing is to use as many textures as possible in the design of the room. And you can “collect” all shades of gray together in an original fresco, which is perfect for decorating the wall opposite the bed.

6. Blueberry blue

In the photo: Modern design of a minimalist bedroom

A blueberry painted niche in a minimalist bedroom design plays the role of an interior accent. It zones and complicates the space, and is also the perfect backdrop for a gray bed with an original upholstered headboard and table lamps with white textile shades.

Modern bedroom design ideas from portfolio photo

When creating a cozy, relaxing and stylish bedroom design, modern decorating ideas are indispensable. Wall murals, contrasting details, mirror panels, multi-level ceiling structures with sophisticated lighting - professional interior designers have a whole arsenal of interesting novelties in stock.

7. Accent wall with textured finish

Pictured: Beige Art Deco Bedroom Design

Textured plaster with sparkling mineral particles or designer wallpaper with complex relief will turn the accent wall at the head of the bed into an art object. And you can support such a non-trivial decor by adding art deco to the interior. a luxurious palace chandelier with crystal pendants and imitation candles.

8. Contrasting details in a bright bedroom

Photo: Modern luxury bedroom with art deco elements

A bright bedroom will be perceived in a completely different way if you add contrasting details to its design: engravings in black frames or table lamps with black lampshades. They will make the atmosphere more dynamic and modern, emphasize the symmetry of the interior and place the necessary accents.

9. Wallpaper in two colors

In the photo: Beige-brown bedroom project in art deco style

The combination of two-color wallpaper in the design of the bedroom is a fashionable decorating idea that makes it easy to highlight the central element in the interior or zone the space. And this technique works best if companion wallpapers are used, as in the photo: from the same collection and with the same pattern.

10. Mirror panels in a modern interpretation

In the photo: Dark bedroom with neon lighting and a mirror panel

The best way to complicate the interior, adjust the geometry of the space or create an optical illusion is to integrate a mirror panel into the bedroom design. For a classic room the option of square beveled tiles is suitable, and for a minimalist interior - a modern interpretation of mirrored triangles.

11. Tiered ceilings

In the photo: Interior of a beige bedroom 12 square meters. m

Multi-level ceiling design with LED lighting in the design of the bedroom 12 sq. m in the photo emphasizes the sleeping area and perfectly organizes the space. Together with the original chest of drawers, it forms an axis of symmetry, which is supported by paired mirror panels with spectacular sconces and lamps with crystal pendants.

12. Wall mural

In the photo: Bedroom interior with photo wallpapers and a workplace by the window

Wall mural is an interior bestseller, which is now experiencing a rebirth. Panorama of the metropolis, rural landscape, graffiti, macro images of flowers, water drops or cherry blossoms, as in the photo of the bedroom in 2016, can not only decorate the room, but also change its proportions. And you need to choose photo wallpapers taking into account the style and color palette of the interior.

13. High padded panel headboard

In the photo: An example of the use of textile panels

A high headboard made of soft panels covered with pleasant to the touch gray textiles is not just a design element that adds comfort to the bedroom, but the main vertical in the interior. Thanks to this headboard, the ceilings seem higher, and the space looks symmetrical and orderly.

14. Gradient wall painting

Pictured: Purple ceiling with futuristic lights

Gradient wall painting is a hit of 2016. A smooth transition from a rich color to a subtle shade brings to the interior design "highlight" and makes it exclusive. As a rule, the “stretching” of the color is done from the bottom up, but in the bedroom in the photo, the designers of the Fundamental Group of Companies made the brightest ceiling. And this decision justified itself by 100%!

Popular ways to light bedrooms

With the help of lighting in the bedroom, you can not only create a romantic mood or an atmosphere of relaxation, but also change the geometry of space, highlight accent details and visually lighten the interior.

15. Combination of LED contour and spot lighting

In the photo: Bedroom interior with LED lighting

Contour LED lighting transforms the high headboard of the bed, which is made up of light leather-covered modules, into the ceiling, into the central decorative element of the bedroom. And two rows of spotlights, embedded in zebrano veneer panels, emphasize this design and give it volume.

16. Color LEDs

In the photo: Bedroom design with colored LEDs

Hidden behind plastic diffusers, colored LEDs enliven the monochrome interior of a modern bedroom and bring the atmosphere of a nightclub into it. They transform the space and provide enough light to be used as a night light.

17. Pendants instead of table lamps

In the photo: Provence-style wooden wall in the interior of a modern bedroom

Replacing table lamps with stylish pendants is a popular decorating solution that is justified in every way. Ceiling lamps on long cords shine as brightly as table lamps, but look more original and complicate the interior. In addition, they do not take up space on bedside tables and fit perfectly into the design of small bedrooms up to 12 square meters. m.

18. Bed light

In the photo: Design of a purple bedroom in a modern style

LED strip is often used by interior designers for the design of large pieces of furniture. A massive wardrobe with LED lighting will look less bulky, and a large double bed will turn into a bed floating above the floor.

Boudoir area in modern bedroom design

A boudoir area with a dressing table and a mirror is an indispensable element of the matrimonial and girl's bedroom. It can be part of a furniture system or completely autonomous, the main thing is that its design matches the interior design, and its functionality matches the needs of the hostess.

19. Chest of drawers or dressing table? Both!

In the photo: Interior of a bedroom with a boudoir area

The dressing table in the design of the bedroom in the photo of 2017 is a continuation of the laconic chest of drawers in the TV area. Its drawers will fit all cosmetics, jewelry and accessories, and on the tabletop you can put a couple of family photos in beautiful frames and a magnifying mirror. Instead of a chair, the boudoir area in this room is equipped with a comfortable padded stool that slides easily under the table.

20. Hanging console with armchair: an eye-catching duo

In the photo: Design of a cozy bedroom with photo wallpaper

A hanging semi-circular dressing table and an upholstered chair upholstered in beige velvet match the style and color scheme of the bedroom. Therefore, in the interior they look very organic and do not overload the space.

21. Classic style boudoir area

Pictured: Classic bedroom with turquoise accents

An elegant dressing table with a mirror and a pouffe on curved legs go well with the white furniture and blue trim of the classic bedroom. Gold-plated patterns add extra value to this set, and a sconce that imitates a candlestick with a candle emphasizes the elegance of the furniture.

Workplace in the bedroom interior

In many apartments, the bedroom is a multifunctional room, where, in addition to the bed and wardrobe, there is also a workplace. It can be arranged near the window or in a free corner of the room, choosing the furniture that suits the design.

22. Art Deco mini office

Pictured: Art Deco Beige Bedroom

Featuring an elegant rounded table and a vintage armchair, this mini-study will make any Art Deco bedroom look great. or neoclassical. And so that the workplace can also be used as a boudoir zone, the designers of the Fundament Group of Companies placed next to the wall mirror in a silver frame.

23. Workplace by the window in a classic interior

In the photo: A workplace by the window in the bedroom

A workplace near the window can easily be turned into a compact office if you add high racks and floor cabinets to the window sill-tabletop. And so that this zone does not dominate the space, it is better to choose furniture to match the decoration of the bedroom.

24. Contemporary style office with wallpaper in two colors

In the photo: Gradient solution of the depth of the visual space using wallpapers of different shades

A laconic cognac-colored wooden table takes up very little space and is ideal for a modern bedroom interior. Despite its small size, it can easily fit all the necessary equipment. And in the "company" for such a table, it is best to fit an office chair with light leather upholstery.

Organization of a separate recreation area

Chaise lounges, armchairs, soft benches - any furniture that can provide the necessary comfort is suitable for the relaxation area in the bedroom. Also, when choosing, you need to take into account the style of the interior and the available free space.

25. Upholstered bench and floor lamp

In the photo: Relaxation area with a soft bench

A soft bench with a mountain of pillows and a stylish floor lamp located near the window is the best place for relaxation and reading. And if you push the thick chocolate-colored curtains, you can create a secluded corner where it's so nice to dream.

26. Stylish chaise longue

In the photo: Minimalist bedroom with a chaise longue

Modern design quilted chaise longue with metal frame and beige velvet upholstery is ideal for a comfortable stay. Its curved shape will allow you to relax all the muscles and enjoy a cozy interior.

27. Art deco vintage armchairs

In the photo: Creating a cozy seating area in the art deco bedroom

Vintage armchairs with silver brocade upholstery will look great in an art deco bedroom design. And if you complement them with an elegant coffee table, the harmony in the relaxation area will be absolute.

Arrangement of storage systems in the bedroom

Placing a storage system in the bedroom is relevant if the apartment does not have a separate dressing room. It can be made hidden or put on display - it all depends on the characteristics of the room and the wishes of the owners.

28. Corner wardrobe with mirror fronts

In the photo: Bedroom interior with a mirrored wardrobe

A spacious and comfortable corner wardrobe is a worthy alternative to a dressing room. It is suitable for a spacious room, and for the design of a bedroom of 12 square meters. m. And the most functional can rightfully be called a model with mirrored facades. Such furniture literally dissolves in space, changing its geometry and complicating the interior.

29. Wardrobe built into a niche with facades in the color of the finish

In the photo: Bedroom project with built-in wardrobe

The built-in wardrobe is the most ergonomic solution for the bedroom. It does not take up useful space, does not overload the interior, and is not inferior to traditional models in terms of capacity. And if you order sliding doors for such a cabinet in the color of the walls or interior doors, the furniture will become invisible.

30. Traditional wardrobes for a classic interior

In the photo: Bright bedroom in a classic style

A spacious bedroom is a suitable place for a traditional storage system, which can be represented as a single wardrobe or a furniture system with a large number of modules. For a modern interior, a laconic set without additional decor is suitable, and for a bedroom in a classic style, you can pick up paired wardrobes with panels and patina and complement them with a chest of drawers and a hanging shelf.

Using modern ideas from the arsenal of specialists of the Fundament Group of Companies in the design of the bedroom, you can create a truly stylish and cozy space where both body and soul will rest. And if you only have an image of the future interior and you don’t know how to implement it, professional designers help you make your dream come true.

Another interesting layout. The bay window can be designed as a separate office, separating it with blackout curtains, shelving, shelves and equipping it with a table and chair. Another option is a place to relax with a soft cabinet and pillows. Or you can make it a continuation of the space in a modern high-tech style - with suspended ceiling structures and monochrome walls.

Zoning a bedroom for a young girl

You can divide the room into several parts using curtains, color spots, transparent or plasterboard partitions (stationary or mobile).

The desktop is best placed next to a window. If possible, a little to the side of him. In the same part of the room, a rack or shelves for books and other items are installed. They visually fence off the rest of the territory.

A bed or sofa can be set off with a canopy or accent wall. It looks especially good in small or elongated rooms. If you want to save space, consider the option of a retractable podium bed.

A dressing table is another important place in a girl's personal space of any age. If you want to save square meters, combine it with your desktop. There are models with a built-in, folding mirror. Make the most of every centimeter - instead of the usual countertop, choose the option with drawers or a nightstand where you can put away cosmetics.

Provide a place to relax, get-togethers with friends. Suitable bean bags, a small sofa, hanging hammocks, swings.

Choice of colors and furnishings for the bedroom

A cramped room is just made for light shades: they will visually expand it and make it more airy. This does not mean that Khrushchev is a sentence and a ban on brightness. Saturated colors can be used as accents, it is better if there are no more than two or three of them. This rule applies to any footage.

Coziness and warmth will be added by decorating the walls and floors under the “tree”, especially if we are talking about an attic or a country house. In a city apartment, you can pick up a beautiful combination of orange and brown palettes. If the future mistress of the room has a changeable disposition, find light, neutral colors: white or beige. You can change the mood with the help of textiles and decor items.

Wallpaper for a girl in the bedroom

Walls can be not only plain: a good way to decorate and zone any area is combined wallpaper. There are different styles and techniques of gluing. It is recommended to combine no more than three shades or patterns. There are no special requirements, but remember that:

Furniture

Minimum - dressing table, work table, place to sleep, chair, armchair, shelves and wardrobe. The latter must be large. The best option is a wardrobe under the ceiling. For small rooms, transformer furniture is relevant: folding, retractable, folding, with storage compartments. It is better to choose a bed for a schoolgirl immediately for an adult (one and a half), so as not to update it after a year.

Decor

This includes not only items to decorate the room, but also functional things: curtains, mirrors. All this must be chosen based on the taste of the hostess and the style of the interior. Light blinds are suitable for modern design. If the windows overlook a well-lit street or courtyard, consider blackout curtains: they will darken the space and nothing will disturb your sleep. Garlands with warm shimmer, potted plants, posters on the walls will add comfort.

Lighting

In addition to the main light source, it is important to purchase a table lamp, sconce. Spotlights on the ceiling distribute light more evenly than a regular chandelier.
