How To Choose the Right Family Room Light Fixture – Simply2Moms

It’s so important to choose the right family room light fixture because it will be so visible. Get our tips for selecting the perfect one for your home!

My husband loves coming up with projects to do around the house.

About 7 years ago, he decided our family room needed a little something extra.

The room has 10-foot ceilings, so it was the perfect space to build coffers.

He wanted them to be a little unique so he designed square medallions at each of the intersections.

When they were done, we knew it was the perfect time to replace the light the builder had installed.

It wasn’t quite a boob light because it had a cluster of leaves at the bottom and it was a semi-flush mounted fixture.

But it was small and ugly and didn’t work in the space.

The light we were replacing was about 12-inches in diameter, so when we were looking at other light fixtures, a 20-inch drum light seemed like it would be great!

But…

Even though I loved its filigree pattern, the scale just wasn’t big enough for this large space.

If you look really close, you’ll also notice that it’s a rubbed bronze finish.

But everything else in the room was wrought iron.

It didn’t look bad.

In fact, I really like the fixture and can’t wait to hang it in my laundry room!

But it wasn’t the right ceiling light for my family room space.

When Wayfair contacted us about a living room upgrade project, I knew exactly what I wanted to do: replace the light in this room.

However this time?

I wasn’t going to make the same mistake!

How to Choose the Right Sized Light Fixture for Your Living Room

After doing some research, I learned there’s actually a formula that you can use to figure out what size your light fixture should be!

It’s a simple formula that only requires a tape measure.

First, measure the length of your room.

Then measure the width of your room.

Now add those numbers together.

And BAM!

That’s approximately how many inches wide your light fixture should be.

How easy is that?

I got out my tape measure and the length of my room is 17-feet, 8-inches.

Then it gets a little tricky.

You see, my family room has a hallway that runs behind the couch, but it’s an open floor plan, so the coffered ceiling extends over both the family room and the hallway.

I decided to measure the width of just the family room (14′ 8″) as well as the width of the family room including the hall (19′).

When you add the length and the width of just the family room, the ideal light fixture is a little over 32 inches.

And the number when you include the hall space is just over 36.5.

I decided that I would look for light fixtures in that range of 32-36 inches wide.

Clearly my 20-inch wide drum light was way too small!

Next, it was time to figure out the best height for the fixture.

This calculation is even easier!

Multiply the height of your ceilings by 3, and that’s how many inches high your fixture should be.

So my 10-foot ceilings mean my fixture should be about 30-inches tall.

Knowing these dimensions made it easy to narrow down my choices.

How to Choose the Right Style of Light Fixture

Now that I knew the correct size for my family room light fixture, it was time to choose a style.

There are a few main types of ceiling light fixtures.

You can get more information about the different types of ceiling light fixtures in this article.

I was able to quickly rule out three of the styles: flush mount, semi-flush mount, and a ceiling fan.

None of those options gave me both the size and/or the style I wanted.

I liked the look of my old drum light, but I was concerned that a similar drum light of the size I needed would be too visually heavy.

I also wanted a matte black or wrought iron finish.

The filters on the Wayfair website were so helpful in narrowing down my choices.

You can filter based on size, finish, style, price, shape, and even more.

Narrowing Down My Favorites for My Living Room

These are the eight chandeliers that made my initial cut.

Ryckman 8-light Traditional ChandelierTari 5-light Lantern ChandelierMedina 8-light Traditional ChandelierKuzey 6-light Wagon Wheel ChandelierAlbina 5-light Candle-style ChandelierGainesville 9-light Tiered ChandelierFedele 9-light Empire ChandelierChevonne 6-Light Drum Light

As you can see, I was definitely drawn to a particular style!

There were only three that didn’t look like a more traditional chandelier.

One had a similar shape and style to the new lanterns in my front entry.

Another had a bit of a wagon wheel style.

And one was a drum light but with an open, airy feel to it.

It was so hard to decide!

AnnMarie helped me narrow them down even more…

You can check out all of Wayfair’s gorgeous chandeliers to find the perfect one for your home here.

The Big Reveal!

After a lot of debating.

And waffling.

I realized I kept going back to two options: an empire style chandelier and the open drum style light.

Which one did I choose?

Ta da!

I decided to update my family room with this gorgeous Fedele 9-light Empire style chandelier with a light and airy feel to it.

And that beautiful drum-style chandelier? Check out where it’s going…

It was too pretty to pass up, but it was only 25-inches wide so it just wasn’t big enough for my living room light.

Remember: always turn off the power at the circuit breaker box before changing a light fixture!!

We hung the new fixture so that the bottom is about 7. 5 feet from the floor.

I absolutely love how it looks!

It’s the perfect size for the room: large enough to make a statement, not too large to overpower the other features of the room.

The black finish works perfectly with the mirror over the fireplace that I updated last year and my fireplace surround.

Would you believe I painted that surround with chalk paint?

You definitely won’t believe what it looked like beforehand…

Since this chandelier has such an open feel to it, you can still see the decor on all the shelves of my built-in entertainment center.

Even the stuff on the very top.

I really loved the large lantern-style light, but I didn’t want all the lights to look too matchy-matchy.

Just like when I coach my clients about choosing outfits for the family photos: instead of trying to all match, my lighting all coordinates.

The black chandelier and lanterns also really complement the gallery wall frames in my front entry.

Everyone Loves a Before and After!

Finding the perfect light fixture for my living room was so easy thanks to Wayfair.

To see just how much of a difference this update made to the space, here’s a side-by-side comparison.

So what do you think?

Did I make the right choice?

Living Room Lighting - Ceiling Lights, Sconces & Lamps

Where Living Room Lighting Works Best

As one the larger rooms of your home, successful living room lighting is best accomplished with a variety of different fixtures. A living room can have many different highlights, whether it be a painting, a piano or even a television. These highlights can dictate the layout of the room and the best lighting options for it. For example, flexible track lighting gives you the freedom to illuminate those areas that bring out the best qualities of your living space, whereas picture lights offer a more focused approach, brightening specific items that express your own unique style or of course, that work of art you have hanging on the wall. And what is a living room without lamps? Thanks in part to their portability and versatile nature, living room table lamps are a necessary element of living rooms and great rooms. Anytime you choose redecorate or rearrange, they will happily accommodate your design decisions and move at a moment's notice. Floor lamps are also go-to choices of lighting for the living room. Ambient floor lamps can be placed in the corner of the room to deliver general illumination, or you may want to consider a reading lamp for its focused task lighting. Finally, to help make a statement in the room, turn to a decorative ceiling light. Living room ceiling lights, including pendants, chandeliers, flushmounts and recessed fixtures provide eye-catching design and a functional source of downlight you'll be sure to appreciate. With the right mix of lighting, you'll be able to create a well-rounded design for your living room.

A Living Room Light Fixture for Every Style

With such a vast collection of light fixtures for the living room, there are many options to fit your home's specific interior design scheme. Whether your living room follows a traditional aesthetic or is filled with furniture inspired by retro and mid-century design, you'll find just the right ceiling lights and lamps you need here. Modern living areas will appreciate the pendant lighting and sconces in the Arturo Alvarez collection or check out Muuto's assortment for a noticeably Scandinavian look. Rich Brilliant Willing offers a celebrated selection of unique suspension lights, as well as stunning sconces to dress up your bare walls. In the table lamps department, look to any of the iconic styles offered by Artemide including the popular Tolomeo and Tizio collections. And if it's a familiar arc floor lamp you've got your mind on, there's no better choice than the Arco from FLOS. Finally, to keep your home energy efficient, look to the LED living room lighting available.

Choosing the Best Living Room Lights

While a table lamp or floor lamp is portable and easy to introduce into any room, you'll need to pay closer attention to your selection of ceiling lights and sconces. Ceiling lights, including track systems, pendants and can lights all come in varying shapes and sizes. You'll need to properly measure the area where your ceiling light will be installed to gauge the right size to choose while being mindful of dimensions like height, width, diameter and hanging length (for chandeliers, pendant lights and other suspensions). And whether you prefer bright, focused task lighting or more general, warm illumination, you'll want to check out a fixture's lumens chart and light source type. With a size and shape in mind for your living room lighting, you can then seek to choose colors, finishes and features that are consistent with the rest of the room's decor. If you have any questions about the living room light fixtures and lamps featured here, please call our lighting experts.

Other Considerations

Once you have your lighting choices all picked out, why not consider giving your furniture a much-needed refresh too? Living room furniture includes sofas, sectionals, lounge chairs, accent tables and other pieces that are needed to really tie the space together. You may also appreciate the presence of cool, fresh air in the living room. As an area of the home where multiple people are bound to gather, you'll want to keep the airflow moving with the help of a ceiling fan. Many ceiling fans also include optional light kits too, effectively allowing you to have airflow in the room while also providing a lighting solution. Lastly, set the mood for those low light kind of nights with a light dimmer. Dimming switches are easy to install with modern fixtures and can make a world of difference for the atmosphere of the room.

8 simple light patterns with three sources | Articles | Photo, video, optics

Lighting is one of the most important tools for a photographer. With it, you can add depth, volume, drama, lightness to the frame. But in the hands of a beginner, the light can sometimes not emphasize the merits of the model, but, on the contrary, highlight the shortcomings. Therefore, it is easier to learn from ready-made examples. We collected various schemes for shooting with three light sources that can be repeated.

Why one light source is not always enough

Three sources is a classic scheme. But what is it used for? For 3D imaging. This technique is most in demand when shooting portraits.

If you shoot a portrait, for example, against a solid background and put one light source in front, the person's face will be flat.

Important: can actually take interesting portraits with just one light source. How to do this is described in a separate article.

Three light sources allow you to show the depth of the frame, get illuminated areas in different ways.

For example:

There are many schemes for arranging light sources. The photographer can take any and change it to fit the location, idea. You can always experiment. Photo: ps-studio.su

What light sources can be used in studio shooting

Softboxes

Needed to create a key light (creates a shadow, adds volume) or fill light (makes shadows soft, fully illuminates the subject).

There are many varieties, for example:

Reflectors

A popular attachment for concentrating the light beam in one direction. In addition to the standard nozzle, there is:

Umbrellas

Large popular nozzles (65-120 cm). There are translucent (scatter light, reduce its intensity), reflective.

Tubes

They have an unusual cone shape. It allows you to form a narrow beam of light. So you can highlight some detail, make an accent.

Beauty Dishes

Provides soft yet focused light at the same time.

Now let's list the popular schemes that can be repeated in the studio.

Classic three-light setup

Needed:

The background is white paper.

“High key” light scheme

In this scheme, light tones predominate, there are practically no dark and deep shadows. But with the help of glow, you can also create the desired volume.

The scheme is similar to the Hollywood one and the one described above. In these cases, the model's face is also illuminated by a single light source. It is placed above the camera (as an option - a little to the side, but still next to it).

But what's the difference? The difference is in the background lighting. Behind the model, 2 light sources are installed, which are at an angle of 45 degrees with respect to the background. At the same time, the background lighting should have an intensity that is 1–2 steps higher in terms of exposure than that of the main source.

With the High Key scheme, the photo is very bright. But still bulky. Illustration: Photostore.Expert

A simple light scheme with a parabolic umbrella

Such an umbrella of the usual large diameter (1–2 m). Its peculiarity is that the "deep" shape allows you to create a dense and intense light flux. It becomes more directed. The object is completely well lit. Now it is enough just to highlight additional areas so that there is a clearer outline.

Needed:

This method can be used to photograph a static portrait. The background for work is best to choose a light one.

This scheme differs from the previous one in the arrangement of vertical strips. In the previous case, they highlighted the model itself. In this they are aimed at the background. The option is suitable if the background is not light enough, white, eye-catching. And the task is to make it lighter, brighter, so that the object stands out against its background.

Umbrella available 165–180 cm in diameter. Thanks to such a large size, the lighting will be soft, delicate, without harsh shadows.

The scheme is used for fashion shooting, portrait shooting, shooting for photo stocks.

Light scheme for studio light - 6th version

To create a stylish black and white photo, you need a uniform dark gray paper background. You need to put the model as far as possible.

For work you will need:

honeycomb reflector - the main light source, which is located almost above the model's face. Needed to illuminate the face, hairstyles.

Light scheme in photography with color sources

Non-standard option for amateurs. With it, you can make beautiful color accents on the subject. The background is black, paper. It is better to dress the model in white so that the composition looks as impressive as possible. The girl becomes at the maximum possible distance from the background.

1. The first light source is a reflector with honeycomb and shutters, on which a red gel filter is installed. The task is to highlight the hair of the model from below, while preventing the light from spreading to the back. The exact location of the reflector depends on the height of the model.

2. Second Light - Reflector without honeycomb, with blue gel filter. Needed to make cold shadows from below. It must be placed at the bottom right so that the light beam is from the bottom up. It is important that the blue beam does not light up the face too much. Otherwise, the picture will look dirty.

3. The last source (main) is a plate. It must be placed high and close to the subject so that the light beam is almost vertical.

Unusual scheme with color filters. Illustration: Elizaveta Chupikova, Fotosklad.Expert

Lighting scheme for portrait photography - 8th version

For a black and white photo, you should take a gray background (any shade, from light to dark).

3 types of source are used:

Very important. It is he who creates a beautiful shadow, adds volume. The light from this source is hard. You can take a beauty dish (how to work with it, described in our guide), a standard reflector, a reflection umbrella.

Softens shadows and illuminates the entire subject. This light must be scattered. You can take an umbrella to the light, softbox.

Needed to highlight the background, add volume, highlight the object from the background. To form a bright spot, you can take a flash with a reflector, a tube.

In the presented scheme, the sources of key and fill light should be placed in front of the object, on opposite sides of the photographer. And the tube is directed to the background canvas.

How to protect your rights in a dormitory: 6 unpleasant student stories

Anya Ivaneshkina

found out why dormitories are scary

Author profile

According to Rosstat, every tenth Russian student lives in a dormitory.

This is not always a pleasant experience: it can be difficult to find a common language with neighbors or administration, and sometimes you even have to fight for your rights.

We collected several difficult situations in which students did not know what to do and asked lawyer Arman Zhumanov to tell us how to act.

HSE student's story

When the neighbors are constantly noisy

For me, the main problem in the hostel was the neighbors. They moved in with me in my first year - they came from the same city, entered the same faculty at the university. Their friendly company quickly began to grow, and soon every weekend our apartment became the center of a party.

In the first year of study, it was easier to endure: firstly, I was terribly tired and fell asleep even to screams and songs, and secondly, a fourth-year student lived with me, who could put these guys in their place. But in the second year it became more difficult: the neighbor moved out, and I found a job and fell in love with the silence and comfort more. However, the parties did not stop, and peace negotiations did not help.

At some point, my patience ran out and during another noisy Saturday I went straight to the commandant: I told him everything about regular parties and asked him to solve the situation. However, the only thing that happened was a “serious conversation”, during which the commandant and the guard were asked to turn off the music and throw out the alcohol. As soon as they left, my neighbors decided to set fire to the garbage under the door of my room. Fortunately, they discussed their plan as loudly as they did everything else, so I was able to prevent a disaster by threatening the police.

/show-some-respect-opinion/

Opinion: in order to live in a normal legal society, one must learn to respect each other

Soon the pandemic began, I left the hostel and never returned there. Rumor has it that my neighbors still live there and also torture other girls who don't know what to do.

How to achieve silence in a hostel

The rules for living in student hostels are prescribed in local acts of educational organizations - they can be found on the official website of the university or college. These documents must specify a period of silence at night, for example, from 22:00 to 06:00.

The rules of residence can also be fixed in the contract of employment concluded with the student. If a student does not comply with these rules, a disciplinary sanction is applied: a remark, a reprimand, and even expulsion from an educational organization.

The student did the right thing by turning to the commandant with a complaint. Further, it was necessary to seek the drawing up of an act fixing the violation of the rules of residence and making a decision on the application of a disciplinary sanction. If the commandant refuses to do this, you can file a complaint against the name of the rector of the university or vice-rector for student composition.

For the first violation, the perpetrators would most likely get off with a remark or a reprimand. However, for repeated or gross violation of the rules of residence, the culprit can be evicted from the hostel or even expelled.

For example, according to the Model Student Residence Regulations, residents can be evicted for possession and distribution of drugs, possession of dangerous substances or weapons, destruction or damage to residential premises in a dormitory, appearing in a state of alcohol or drug intoxication.

Also in such situations, you can call the police with a complaint about the violation of silence at night and require employees to draw up a protocol on an administrative offense. On the basis of this protocol, the perpetrators will be brought to administrative responsibility. For example, in Moscow, violation of peace and quiet from 23:00 to 07:00 is punishable by a fine from 1,000 to 2,000 rubles.

When not allowed to use the showers

When I moved into the dorm in my freshman year, the shower was closed on Mondays, and on other days it was closed from 12:00 to 16:00 and from 01:00 to 6:00 - at one in the morning the cleaning lady kicked everyone out with a mop.

I was very “lucky” to choose physical education on Mondays and mathematics from eight in the morning on Tuesdays at the university. Due to such a schedule, I could only wash after physical activity on Tuesday evening.

The administration answered all questions and arguments that this is a necessary requirement for drying showers, and if it is not followed, everything will be covered with mold. Naturally, we were not provided with any supporting documents.

Student rights

I was lucky that in my second year of study a very active freshman came to the dormitory and he managed to argue with the administration: the shower began to work every day and was closed to dry for only an hour. I still don't know how he did it and what we would do without him. I heard that in many universities there is a similar problem with showers and students do not make concessions.

Do students have the right to change the schedule of showers

Arman Zhumanov

The requirements for the services of living in hostels do not contain a ban on setting the operating hours of showers, therefore, the creation of a work schedule in itself is legitimate. However, it seems that it should be reasonable and take into account the rights and legitimate interests of students.

If the work schedule of the showers causes great inconvenience, you can try to resolve the issue in two ways: submit collective written appeals to the hostel administration or the management of the educational organization, or contact Rospotrebnadzor with a written complaint. At the same time, it is important to reflect the essence of the violation of your rights and, in the case of Rospotrebnadzor, require an audit in relation to the hostel management.

HSE student's story

When personal space is not respected

In the hostel I encountered the problem of stalkering. In my first year, I had a young man who did not respect my boundaries at all: he constantly came to my room while I was in class and waited for my return. If I arrived before him and locked myself up to be alone, he could stand under the door and knock until I felt embarrassed in front of the neighbors. I didn’t know what to do with it: I was a confused freshman and there was no one to ask for help.

When we finally parted, an even more unpleasant situation occurred. My already ex-young man once just came to my room at night to see who I was sleeping with, which he himself later admitted. I was in such shock that I didn't even know what to do with it. And he continued to do strange antics: for example, guarding me near the room.

/students-stat/

Typical student

If I lived in my own or rented apartment, I could write a statement or at least change the locks. But the hostel has a completely different attitude towards private property - I couldn’t even start locking myself up for the night, because my neighbor often arrived very late and forgot to take the keys with her. As a result, I was able to breathe calmly only when this person finally moved out of the hostel, and then I moved out.

It was worth filing a complaint with the hostel administration in order to bring the young man to disciplinary responsibility for violating your rights: he clearly has no right to enter the room without permission you are legally borrowing.

If this did not work, you should have filed a complaint with the police: illegal entry into a home is a criminal offense. In this sense, a room in a hostel does not differ from an apartment.

RUDN student history

When commandants come without asking

My years in the hostel passed easily enough, but one thing always bothered me: commandants or guards could enter the room at any time of the day.

So, several times I was caught in the morning in my own bed in my shorts. The first time, it turns out, it was necessary to change the chairs, and the second time, to repair the bed. No one warned about these visits in advance, and they went absolutely unceremoniously. One time I had to argue with the commandant so that she would leave the room and at least let me get dressed.

Some guys said that they came to them in their absence, and then they made a remark for the mess or devices prohibited in the hostel. Thank God, this did not happen to me, but I can readily believe it.

By law, a student is required to comply with the rules for living in dormitories, which are established by local acts of educational organizations. These rules may include regulations on student residences and internal regulations. I recommend that you carefully read these rules, they should be posted on the official website of the educational organization.

There is a letter from the Federal Education Agency, on the basis of which the rules of a particular educational organization are developed. In particular, it stipulates the obligation of the student to provide the administration with a room for inspection at any time. However, there are several nuances.

Firstly, it is illegal to come to the room with a check in the absence of a resident, since this violates the constitutional principle of the inviolability of the home. An exception is extraordinary situations, for example, a long absence of a resident in a hostel.

Secondly, the rules of residence or the contract of employment may establish a specific period for conducting inspections, as well as a procedure for agreeing or notifying about an upcoming visit.

Thirdly, at night, taking into account the regional legislation on silence, the commandant cannot come to you.

If the dormitory administration violates the established rules, you can complain to the rector or vice-rector for students or to the court.

The story of an ITMO student

When the administration threatens

We always had free laundry in our hostel: there were three washing machines on 15 floors, and you could also share with your neighbors and buy yourself a washing machine in a block.

At some point, the new administration began to change the rules, explaining this by the decisions of the university, although we did not see a single order. At first, they tried to completely close the free laundry, but a wave of indignation arose and paid washing machines were launched "in test mode."

The administration raided the washing machines that were in blocks and threw out everything older than five years. Then the machines in the laundry suddenly began to break down: out of three, only one remained free for the entire hostel, while advertising for paid laundry was gaining momentum. The free laundry began to be closed from time to time "for technical reasons", and we were not allowed to chip in to repair broken washing machines.

At some point, a new neighbor moved into my block. He bought the washing machine himself and told everyone that he allowed them to use it for a nominal fee. I didn’t force anyone: I just put up an ad in the corridor and wrote on social networks to those I know.

Community 07.04.21

Do I have to pay for a hostel if you don't live there temporarily?

The administration called the neighbor to talk. He was reprimanded for extortion and illegal collection of money, although checks are also not issued for paid laundry from the hostel. He was not forbidden to use the washing machine, but they threatened that they would break the socket if he did not stop running his "business".

The consequences were not long in coming: after a couple of days, the only socket in the room with the washing machine suddenly stopped working. The guy had to pack it up and take it to the warehouse.

The first step is to read the regulations on the student hostel of your educational organization, the internal regulations in the hostel, as well as the contract of employment. They should specify the procedure for using household premises and equipment. The model provision provides for the right to use household premises and equipment.

Intentional damage to equipment, as well as failure to take measures for its timely repair by the hostel administration, are illegal and violate the rights of students. You can complain about this to the rector, to Rospotrebnadzor or to the court.

Moreover, renting a washing machine to third parties for a fee is most likely illegal, as it can be considered a business activity, while dorm rooms are primarily for living.

The story of a student of St. Petersburg State University

When they refuse to move a violent neighbor

For the first three years in the hostel, I lived with one neighbor. We lived well, trusted each other, generally got along. In the summer of 2021, a neighbor graduated from her bachelor's degree and moved out.

In September the nightmare began. An underage freshman from Siberia was settled in with me, and she turned out to be a lunatic. She warned me about her "peculiarities" with a laugh, but I already tensed up then. When I had to live with this, I thought I would die in hysterics.

Several times a week at night she walked around the room, sat up in bed and screamed, mostly incoherently. It was very scary when she screamed and looked straight at me, although it was clear that she was actually sleeping. After each such incident, I simply sobbed from fear for hours and could not sleep.

To cope with the situation, I bought myself a lot of sedative herbs and pills, but it did not help. In her state, the neighbor was absolutely insane, and I was afraid that she would dream of something terrible - that they were trying to kill her, for example - and she would decide to fight back, and only I would be next to me.

In the end, I got tired of enduring it and went to the administration to ask for resettlement. They yelled at me, threatened with eviction, tried to accuse me of offending the "poor child" and, as a result, they simply brought me to tears.

In the end, the girl was nevertheless relocated, but only because repairs were completed on the other floor and many new rooms were opened.
