Height-Accentuating

This look, in a Tudor-style home sensitively reimagined by ELLE DECOR A-List designer Frances Merrill, could have easily gone over-the-top cottagecore. Complementary Patterns

If you’re stuck with tiny windows, use curtains to create the illusion of size. 5

Floral and Traditional

A full-blown valance look doesn’t need to be stuffy, as designer Veere Grenney proves in this cheery London townhouse. The antique furnishings and ruffles may lean traditional, but a 1960s Gaetano Sciolari pendant and an abstract artwork by Daniel Jacomet keep things contemporary and cool.

Mint Green Curtains

Leave it to textiles expert Caterina Fabrizio, the second-generation co-owner of her family’s textile house, Dedar, to know how to hang curtains where it counts. Here in her primary bedroom, the mint green shades have a fun, black-and-white striped backing and help to bring the green of the garden inside. Another word of advice? Swap out your fabrics seasonally, just as you might change your wardrobe. “The furniture stays and the fabrics and carpets change,” Fabrizio says.

Pistachio-Hued

Our modern curtain ideas show how curtains can be used to transform a room and design scheme with color, character and elegant contemporary style.

Curtain ideas are one of the most popular window treatment ideas for the home, seen as an essential feature by many. When planning the curtains for an interior design, of course there are many practical features that need to be considered, such as the type of curtain and how to measure for curtains. However, choosing curtains should also be a fun and creative process where you can explore beautiful texture, pattern, color and exciting modern curtain design.

Curtains are an important part of a room, and your choices should be well-thought out and carefully planned - they can really make or break a scheme. Many modern curtain ideas focus on creating an element of contrast in a space, extending a color palette for a more immersive look, and adding depth and inviting texture to a space.

Modern curtain ideas

From beautiful abstract patterns to more serene and simple looks, we have curated an inspiring collection of modern curtain ideas that can add impact, style and a unique design feature to your home.

1. Embrace a colorful, geometric pattern

This living room is a beautiful example of mixing bold colors, striking shapes and contrasting textures to establish an elegant, modernist look.

The Centaure patterned curtains by Pierre Frey , inspired by shapes and colors of the Constructivism art movement, are defined by an eye-catching, geometric blue and yellow print. Adding unique, vivid visual interest to the space, the contrasting color combination is further enhanced by the blue rug, yellow coffee table and scatter cushions.

Creating a colorful presence in the room, you can get lost in the curtains' intriguing, graphic modern pattern, just like a work of art or wall-hanging, with this design establishing a stylish focal point in the space - a great look for living room curtain ideas.

2. Keep it cool and contemporary with gray

A color that has proved itself to be one of the most popular choices for decorating in the modern home, gray room ideas can create a cool and contemporary feel.

As shown in this living room, designed by Ginny Macdonald Design , the gray curtains work with the eye-catching, gray painted ceiling trim to enhance the modern look, defined by a soothing, neutral color palette.

Macdonald states of the curtains, 'we were thrilled to be able to work with Holland and Sherry to have custom embroidered sheer panels made for the windows in this family living room'.

The gray curtains' subtle pattern adds an elegant, decorative touch to the overall masculine, minimalist design.

As the popular saying goes, sometimes less is more, and no matter your style, you cannot go wrong with a block color curtain design.

In this modern bedroom, defined by striking, contemporary color palette, the bright green, velvet curtain works well to establish a stylish contrast with the blue painted walls, patterned headboard and bedding, with the pink accents uniting the scheme as one.

The simple, block color curtain design works to maximum effect to add tactile texture as well as a bold colorful statement in this inviting bedroom space.

4. Use an uplifting color palette

Colorful room ideas are renowned to make us feel more happy, and choosing to be more adventurous with your curtain color palettes can help to make a room feel more personal, unique and joyous.

In this bedroom, the white painted, paneled wooden walls allow for the curtains, patterned headboard, and colorful accessories to truly take center stage.

The curtains are defined by a dark pink, diagonal striped pattern, with a contrasting yellow trim, and work with the other colorful elements in the space to establish a playful and uplifting atmosphere - a fun option for bedroom curtain ideas.

Decorating with stripes has always been popular in interiors both classic and contemporary, with this diagonal striped curtain design a great option for a more modern striped look.

5. Make and impact with an ombré look

An ombré curtain design can add a beautiful blend of colors to a space. As shown in this modern dining room, the Ombré Sunset Curtains, designed by Clarissa Hulse for Curtains 2 Go , are defined by her signature watercolor style.

Starting with a deep purple at the bottom, moving through to red, pink and orange, this palette of vibrant colors creates a warming and inviting atmosphere. The white used then adds balance to the design, with the curtains a great choice for both bold and more simple interior designs.

These curtains set the scene for the rest of the room, with the furniture, lighting and accessories chosen in the same palette of rich, sunset inspired tones, establishing a colorful space that feels cozy and unique.

A beautiful design that will impress your guests for dining room curtain ideas.

6. Create a serene sanctuary with sheer curtains

Sheer curtains are utterly timeless; creating a soft, floaty look full of movement that feels relaxed and elegant – they are also a great option if you do not want to completely block out the light from your window.

Design director at Villa Nova Hayley McAfee states, 'a sheer curtain never goes out of style, these can work in any type of home, whether traditional or modern. Furthermore, they are the perfect partner, when paired with heavier drapes they can easily create an interior that has a refined, soft look. You may want to replace a sheer curtain to a heavier weight fabric for practical reasons during the winter months, but this is down to personal preference. '

In this tranquil white bedroom, the softness of the white sheer curtains enhances the calming sleep space, creating a light and airy feel that is restful and full of inviting natural light.

'Rather than acting as the final finishing touch, many modern curtain designs act as the central focal point in a room, capturing the gaze with striking visual interest through unique patterns, prints and color combinations,' says Homes & Gardens editor in chief, Lucy Searle.

In this living room, a calming design where natural materials and grounding color palettes unite with more modern geometric forms, the bespoke patchwork curtains from Marram are made from naturally-dyed, antique French linen and upcycled cotton, a wonderfully sustainable choice that enhances the overall organic look and feel in the room.

Like a beautiful piece of modern art, the abstract printed design frames the tall windows and enhances the use of contrasting shapes and materials throughout the space.

8. Keep things sleek and sophisticated

(Image credit: Villa Nova, Mark Alexander)

'Whether you have tall windows in a larger space, or more traditional, compact designs in a cozy cottage, a pleated curtain can establish a sleek and sophisticated look, adding a sense of structure, neatness and formality to a space,' says Jennifer Ebert, Homes & Gardens' digital editor.

In this stylish living room, the old is united with the new, as the traditional building is refreshed with a modern and minimalist interior design. The tall, pleated gray curtains from Mark Alexander at Villa Nova, not only enhance the height of the tall windows, but add a comforting element of softness to the overall industrial decor style.

Featuring a subtle geometric print, this curtain design shows that modern curtain ideas do not always have to be big, bright and bold, rather, many spaces benefit from a more refined, understated look.

9. Unite clashing patterns and styles for a maximalist look

Embracing a 'more is more' approach and turning to maximalist decor ideas can create a design bursting with character and personal style.

Using your curtains to create contrast and uniting clashing prints and patterns can make a space feel more interesting, refreshing and modern.

In this cozy corner of a living room, the Vixen wallpaper and matching Csardas curtains and cushion by Mind The Gap , establish an exuberant, elegant contrast. The different patterns and styles of print come together to create a unique design that is rich with color and texture, establishing a unique and vibrant atmosphere in the space.

10. Be bold with black curtains

(Image credit: Shapeside by Genna Margolis, photography by Amy Bartlam)

A tricky design to get right, many of us are quite cautious when it comes to decorating with black and black room ideas, as you do not want a room that feels too overwhelming or oppressing.

However, when done in the right way, a beautiful black room can feel luxuriously elegant, cocooning and contemporary - plus, black goes with almost every color on the color wheel, making it a hugely versatile choice.

In this small media room, designed by Genna Margolis of Shapeside design, she states of the space, 'we really weren’t sure what to do with this room at first, it was so dark and got very little light, this led us to the idea to lean into the darkness and do a dark room that would be used for media.'

The black curtains work with the black painted walls and sofa to create a snug and cozy space that is perfect for relaxing in front of the TV.

Black curtains definitely make a statement and are certainly not for everyone, but they can work well in bedrooms and family tv rooms.

Using more than one curtain can be great for both practical and decorative reasons. Whether you want to pair sheer curtains with a blackout material, or simply want to unite different colors and patterns, there are many options to choose from.

In this colorful girl's bedroom, by Kate Guinness Design , the vivid Rick Rack fabric by Kit Kemp has been used as the leading edge for the curtains, with the cream set adding a balance and instilling a sense of calm and neutrality.

The use of multiple curtains can only create an elevated feeling of texture and softness in the space, but they can be used to create a layered design with a mix of colors, patterns and styles.

12. Modern curtain ideas are not just for windows

(Image credit: Time Inc (UK) Ltd)

When we think of curtains, many of us will automatically think of window treatments and ways we can enhance these features with beautiful fabric and design, however, modern curtain ideas can be used across the home for both aesthetics and to improve the functionality of a space.

Whether you want to use a curtain as a room divider in a open-plan space, or create a dramatic design feature with a walled curtain, like in the beautiful blue room above, modern curtain ideas don't just have to be for your windows - and it gives you a chance to be more creative and experimental with your fabrics.

How do you make curtains look modern?

There are many ways you can make curtains look modern. As we have explored in this piece, curtains should be seen as a key decorating tool in a room, a chance to enhance a space with beautiful pattern, color and texture.

Embracing more impactful curtain designs can create a striking focal point and modern design feature in a room, and working with multiple textures and types of curtain can create an elegant, layered design that can make a space feel more inviting and cozy.

Hayley McAfee states, 'one of the main fabric trends for curtains I see is patterned and motifs. Curtains are becoming a center piece for the room, as such, there is a willingness to go bolder with the fabric choice.

Alternatively combining natural textures to create a soft, ‘cocooned’ feel is also proving popular. This can be created by having a heavier blind with floaty curtains of even by adding a border to the bottom section of the curtains in a different texture, so for example a pair of linen drapes with a border of velvet. In the living room, made in a modern style, the curtains perform a functional purpose and become an element of a design thought out to the smallest detail. If you miscalculate with the choice of curtains, do not deliberately approach the choice, then the most expensive and modern design will look ridiculous.

Selection of curtains

In the design of the living room, and indeed any other room, the final touch is the choice of curtains that suit the style. Curtains should match the chosen style of the room as much as possible in order to give it even more beauty and comfort.

It is worth noting that each style has its own kind of curtains, and you should be well versed in this, because if the choice is not successful, the design will be spoiled.

Modern style

Modern style is a cross between minimalism, hi-tech and electric. In this style, today people express their “I”, their taste, their concept of comfort.

Modern curtains for the living room - only straight, it is also possible to use curtains on grommets or hinges. The use of clamps is not allowed. The range of colors is combined with other colors of the interior or is an accent. Important: freshness and purity of color. Curtains in the living room 2022 are made from natural fabrics with a pronounced nice texture. Use a pattern either with geometry, or completely monophonic.

Classics are always in trend

Curtains in the classics - a mix of heavy fabric with airy, delicate organza. Light fabric does not let the rays of the sun into the room, and heavy and rather dense curtains do not let strangers into the house. Any fabric is used, the pattern and its texture also do not matter. In addition, more and more often the design of curtains for the living room involves the use of cords, braid or lambrequins. The main thing is to withstand the range of colors, texture, which will be in tune with the rest of the interior.

Hi-tech

In hi-tech there is no place for superfluous details, here every thing, detail is in its pre-allocated place. The style is absolutely unpretentious, very cold, not cozy. Previously, this style was used in the design of offices, but today there are many adherents of style for decorating their premises. The design of the window space in this style is not used for decoration, but carries an exclusively functional load.

If you look at numerous photos of curtains in the living room of this style, it will become clear that the curtains are as simplified as possible and often even strict, of medium transparency, with a sheen. The choice of the fabric used is of great importance - the material must be of high quality, modern, using a metal thread.

Minimalism

Decorations are not allowed in such an interior, everything should be concise and clear. The fabric should be chosen responsibly - it should be light and plain, letting in the sun's rays.

Living room with access to the balcony

If the large living room has a balcony, it is worth considering effective curtains, because often the door to the balcony is opened, and therefore the curtains are more tested.

1. Blinds - practical, but it gives the impression of not a living space, but an office. Not even standard white blinds, but in color, deprive the room of comfort and homely warmth, coziness, and fatness.

2. Sliding type curtains - curtains on the grommets move easily, they will not deform due to fastening, they can be draped.

New curtains for the living room with access to the balcony allow you to create a practical and at the same time cozy interior, the main thing is to take into account the style of the renovated interior.

The end of the renovation is just around the corner, and the curtains are the finishing touch in creating a fashionable design. Of course, you involuntarily follow fashion and novelties, look through the designs of curtains for the living room, photos posted on the network. The main rule when choosing curtains is their practicality, and you should also like your choice, because this is the only way to achieve coziness and comfort in your living room.

Style and textiles

Many people gradually begin to abandon simple minimalism, they want something new and more interesting. Despite this, calm, muted colors crowd out bright, flashy ones. Faux organza and veil give way to natural cotton fabrics.

I want to transform the room with other combinations of prints, furniture, style in curtains and curtains, add zest to your “corner”!

Colors

Classic ivory. This type of window decoration in this shade was, is and will be. 2021 decided to please with a multi-colored revolution and peach was added to the simple beige.

It goes well with dark wood. Shades of brown are making their presence felt again, dusty pink is the favorite of the season!

If your living room is small and lacks zest, puce curtains are a great option. On one window, you can combine a dusty pink strip of curtains with light brown.

Only last season dark turquoise velvet curtains were hung in the houses, it seemed exquisite. Now that time has passed! In a modern interior, curtains with prints and drawings are no longer used, the zone of conciseness and simplicity has not gone anywhere.

Too bright elements distract, interfere with concentration, do not give comfort, peace, "eat up" space. The option with contrasts involves the creation of one level of saturation, in the 1st theme.

Sometimes it seems to people that curtains should be unusual, in the form of curls, weaves. No need to experiment! The interior should be thought out in a complex: all the elements of the room in combination with each other.

Despite the variety of curtains, curtains, tulle, fashion remains true to the desire for uniformity, minimalism, naturalness: "the less the better"!

Traditional living room

Each nation has contributed to the style, decor, interior, beauty. The Scandinavians and the Japanese preferred minimalism, the British remained true to sophistication, the Swiss began to use animal skins and wooden furniture in their homes.

Today everyone can choose an interior in any style they want. What about curtains? What are their types in the traditional style?

Contemporary

Modernity includes calm, muted colors, no unnecessary decorations, furniture. But this does not apply to curtains! They are trying to decorate them with tiebacks, upper ruffles, bright colors that serve as a maneuver in attracting attention, separating calm tones with multi-colored ones!

Draperies and simple white tulle are preferred in the living room. Or just a tulle of some color.

Provence in the living room

French style - lightness, elegance, special simplicity with sophistication. So are Provence curtains! They are sewn from natural light fabrics. The main print is flowers, ruffles, fringes, frills, bows act as decor. Especially in France, they prefer to hang beautiful double curtains in different colors!

The back can be hazel, the front can be white with colorful flowers. Or the main fabric is the color of emerald, and the additional one is white tulle with a marbled pattern. Provence "loves" the material for curtains made of taffeta - a light, but fairly dense fabric.

Chalet decoration

The word chalet is translated from French as “shepherd's hut”. Those. Initially, the style itself assumed simplicity, but accuracy. The main distinguishing feature of the hut was the warmth and reliability of the house. The main material in the interior was wood, sheep skins, stone, and ceiling beams. The furniture is massive, the walls are hung with tapestries, the floors are covered with animal skins.

Chalet-style curtains are always made of dense, non-transparent fabric. The colors are shades of beige and brown. Curtains are always straight, hung on eyelets.

French

French curtains are a huge number of folds throughout the fabric. Cords run vertically to adjust the height of the curtains.

Cords are not available on all models of "marquis" - French curtains. There are fixed, having a constant height to the floor. On short curtains, you can always adjust their length in a vertical state.

Basic textile materials - linen, velvet, voile, silk, organza, satin. Velvet and satin are rarely used, because. these fabrics have long gone out of fashion. Their place was taken by light linen with organza.

In the living room, the awnings are never hung alone - curtains are hung in front of them, which have a brighter color, unlike light French curtains.

They are often combined with Provence - colorful floral curtains and the same furniture.

Modern French-style curtains in the living room bring a variety of folds into the homely atmosphere, set off by bright curtains in the Provence style or just curtain fabric with tiebacks, monograms.

Roman blinds

Roman blinds are straight sheets of fabric that rise up with a special mechanism in horizontal folds. Many confuse this type with rolled ones.

Roman blinds for the living room in a modern style are compact, concise, have a large selection of fabrics (from transparent to thick), with or without a pattern. Roman ones are not made of “liquid tissue” - they simply cannot fold when lifted. Textiles with vertical seams also disappear - they gather tightly.

Duo Roman Blind helps to use 2 types of fabric at the same time on the 1st mechanism, controlling one of the sheets independently of each other!

For the price they will cost you much less than traditional to the floor. On windows of a non-standard configuration, the Roman style will look out of place, even if there is access to the balcony through the living room: before opening the door, you need to raise the curtains, but they can easily catch on the jamb and tear.

Austrian

Austrian curtains are very similar to French ones - they have the same semi-circular frills. They have the function of pulling up, which they took from the Roman style, but when the screed is formed, not folds are formed, but lush waves - scallops.

Austrian curtains look best in large rooms with open windows, like in a living room. If you have an arched window, they will accentuate it. The fabric for their tailoring is taken light and not dense, so that they can be easily draped. Often, "Austrians" are emphasized with lambrequins.

This type of curtain can be long or short in height. When the fabric reaches the floor, folds are made along the bottom, if they do not reach the window sill - over the entire area.

In living rooms they like to make windows almost to the floor, hang dark curtains and light Austrian curtains against their background. Or install a sofa with pillows instead of a window sill, emphasizing all the comfort with beautiful scallops!

Japanese

The Japanese always prefer lightness, comfort and minimalism. So it is with curtains: no decor, bows, ruffles - just simple pieces of thick fabric to the floor without an extra print!

Japan's favorite material is bamboo. It is used for mikasu, chopsticks, furniture and curtains. They will be perfectly combined with dark wood furniture, light fabrics.

Linen is also a great material! They try to make curtains from it in muted colors so as not to disturb the “aura of calmness”. Organza is used infrequently. It is transparent and allows light to pass through. But it does not contain any patterns, prints, only its own color, which is very much appreciated in minimalism.
