Room Ideas
Your master bathroom should be a space of relaxation, rejuvenation, and refreshment. It can be tough to know how to stylize a bathroom, whether you're working with one that is already redone, one that's a bit more dated, or you're starting from scratch to create your ideal bathroom. Whenever you work with a bathroom, it's important to decide how you'll incorporate rugs, and what sizes work best. There's no single way to place bathroom rugs or one correct style to use, so keep reading to see just a few master bathroom rug ideas.
Optimal Placement
Bath Mats and rugs don't just need to be by the shower; placing one right in front of your sink or vanity is a beautiful way to set that space apart from the rest of the bathroom. Not only does it add an air of luxury to the space, but from a practical standpoint, it's also far more comfortable to stand on a rug versus standing on a tiled floor. Plus, rugs can further accent the style of the vanity by complimenting its color and style, like how this distressed rug compliments the natural woods and marble.
Embrace the Scheme
If your bathroom fits into a sleek black and white color palette, it's only natural to carry that over to the rug as well. You can choose a rug with any pattern or design, but if your bathroom has clean straight lines with the wall tiles, you can choose a rug like the one shown here to carry that detail from the wall to the floor. The stripes of the rug also serve as a nice geometric distinction from the hexagon tiles on the floor, but even so, the space works together with its use of general shapes and lines. Finding small unifying factors like this is an ideal way to tie your bathroom together.

Old Traditions
When your bathroom has new, sleek cabinets, counters, shower, and tiling, it's important to add in some element that strikes a different tone. For example, a lot of homes will use worn accents and accessories in a modern space to make it feel more welcoming and lived in. To achieve that look in your bathroom, go for a distressed rug. It serves the important function of being soft under your feet and adds age to the space to make it feel authentic and lived in.

Lead the Way
Runners are great for showing a path through a room. Although the path of a bathroom like this may be obvious, having a runner still serves as a nice walkway from the doorway into the rest of the bathroom. It may be tempting to center your rug in the middle of the aisle, but as you can see in this room, the rug is most effective when place closer to the vanity. After all, if you place the rug too far from the sinks, then you're faced with the awkward position of standing halfway on and halfway off the rug when washing your hands. So, be sure to place the rug where it's most functional and trust that it can serve its visual purpose even when it's not purely centered in the pathway.

Connecting Colors
From a stylistic standpoint, rugs can be great for complimenting your color palette. This rug is a simple dusted rose color, but it ties perfectly to the shower curtain's roses. Then, the black of the shower curtain connects back to the cabinets, faucet, and artwork on the other wall. When deciding how and where to incorporate colors in your bathroom, try to space them out in various areas of the room so that the eye naturally connects the dots and sees the unified vision.

One and Done
Minimalism as a design principle is popular because it allows the few pieces you have to truly stand out. Only placing a small mat next to the bathtub and nowhere else in the room is actually a smart choice stylistically because it stands out as the only soft accent in the room (minus towels, of course). Plus, it adds an air of sophistication by highlighting the tub as the place to relax and be refreshed. A simple 2x3 rug would work by the tub, or a 3x5 depending on your space.
Dare to Be Different
If you enjoy retro style, one easy way to incorporate that style into your master bathroom is through your floor tile. However, it doesn't stop there. Without a rug placed on top of the bold checkered tile, this space could feel overwhelmingly detailed. Placing a rug on top of a bold pattern like this one gives the eye a break from the pattern and adds to the retro style with its pop of color. Sizing varies depending on your bathroom, but in this exact situation, a 2x6 runner would work well.

Running Set
If you have an extra long bathroom, using two runners instead of one can elevate your room in so many ways. Here, you can see the far rug serves as a pathway, while the rug by the sinks serve for comfort and connecting the space. With a clear visual line like this one, you want to choose matching runners, so that they're clearly connected to one another and aren't competing for attention. Also choose runners that are the same size as one another, or else the balance of the space will be thrown off.
His and Hers
Large, sprawling vanities are a must-have for so many master bathrooms, since it gives so much extra counter space and storage. It's natural to place a rug in front of a vanity, but to do something different, choose two individual mats in front of the sinks. This helps establish two distinct spaces and shows off more of the bathroom's floor, which is often stunning in its own right and deserves to have a moment in the sun. Rugs in front of sinks are typically 2x3 or 3x5 depending on how large your bathroom is.

Set the Scheme
Bold colors can really liven up your primary bathroom. One way to carry those colors throughout the room is to include them in the rug, bath towels, and hand towels. This coral red and white rug goes well with the blue vanity and serves as a source of vibrance in an otherwise muted bathroom. If you have neutral or light colors but want a pop of flair, choose a rug that is brighter and compliments the colors of the room. It will definitely add in your personality and joy.
All In
This stunning bathroom includes many natural texture and metals. From the copper tub and sinks to the rocky walls, this bathroom fully fits into a natural vibe. The best way to tie it all together is to add in a rug that fits into that theme. The rug here incorporates a lot of the tans and reds in the stonework and copper and serves to tie all the elements of the room together. Whatever the theme of your bathroom, don't be afraid to get a rug that fully fits that theme and accentuates other details of the room.

Redoing a bathroom can be a daunting task, but at the end of the day, spicing it up with fresh design is well worth the labor. Whether you're in the market for a brand new bathroom or looking to elevate the one you already have, choosing the right rug(s) is a key factor to establishing a space that's both practical and beautiful. Remember how to use antiqued rugs to make a space feel homey, and remember that there's more than one correct way to place a rug in your bathroom. Each space is unique, and now it's time to make your unique space yours.

Farmhouse Bathroom
If you find yourself drawn to farmhouse style, you’ll likely appreciate an organic and casual atmosphere with simple lines and well loved (aged) materials. For a farmhouse bathroom, you’ll want to mix old and new. A vintage style rug placed in front of the sink or tub can add softness and safety. Or, try a simple flat woven striped rug in black and white over wood floors. Use a rug pad to prevent slipping.
Transitional Elegance
Transitional style combines traditional design elements with contemporary style. In your transitional bathroom, you’ll find smooth straight lines combined with soft curvy textures. A rug is a great way to balance your transitional space. If you have a smooth lacquered vanity, add softness with a round or oval rug. Balance out bold masculine tile with a cushy rectangular chenille rug.

Double Vanity
Double vanities extend the bathroom space, creating room for two. Here, a beautiful vintage runner is centered between two vanities creating a soft place to land your feet while still showcasing your bathroom's tile. Standard sizes for bathroom rug decorating tend to be smaller to prevent cluttering the floor. These smaller sizes are also easier to clean regularly, keeping your bathroom sanitary and welcoming.
CHIC AND GLAMOROUS
If your home style is all about glitzy sophistication, then your bathroom should be no different. Glam style incorporates a neutral color scheme with sculptural lines and dramatic details. Give your bathroom that ‘Old Hollywood’ vibe by starting with a neutral color palette, then add a bathroom vanity or pedestal sink with sculptural lines and metallic detail. Finally, add thick and luxurious towels and rugs in traditional or geometric patterns. A high pile rug made from wool or synthetic materials feels rich and handles moisture well.

Heirloom Accent
This printed rug features an eye-catching heirloom pattern printed on a soft and durable surface that’s resilient enough to stand up to regular bathroom use. The rug’s auburn color palette works well with the olive cabinets, tying the decor together and giving the bathroom a warm appeal. If you have colorful cabinets in the bathroom (maybe ones you can't paint over), try using a patterned rug as the focal point to help split the attention.
Boho Bathroom
This modern boho bathroom uses color coordination between the rug and shower curtain to create a cohesive and welcoming look. A narrow layout doesn't make bathroom rug decorating difficult—it just calls for a runner instead of a larger option. Here, the runner helps elongate the space without making it feel crowded. And the accents continue the color coordination, completing the boho style.

Playing with Prints
This bathroom makes excellent use of patterns, prints, and contrast. The tribal print runner is charming and sophisticated, and it softens the half-painted walls. If you're looking for bathroom mat ideas to go with fun paint or attractive wall designs like those shown here, consider a grounded tribal design in neutral colors. Remember, your accents don't have to match perfectly to work beautifully together.
Floral Appeal
This bathroom calls for an eye-catching rug with its floral curtains, a stylish bathtub, and a textured stool. And the vintage-styled runner fits the bill perfectly. It emphasizes the pink found in the floral curtain while still playing with contrast beside the black cabinets. If you love floral designs, try pairing them with traditional medallion rugs like this one to complete your look.

Spa-Like Texture
There's something special about curling your toes into a clean, textured surface right after getting out of the shower or bath. It can make you feel like you've arrived at your own personal spa, and it's excellent for helping moisture evaporate more quickly. And since this is a Chilewich mat, it’ll be easy to clean and moisture resistant. Mats like this add texture to your design, too, which can make the decor in your bathroom feel polished and professional.
Soothing Stripes
If you’re decorating a master bathroom with a bathtub, a rug is more than a style choice. It can also make getting in and out of the tub safer by providing a slip-free surface for you to place wet feet on. Here, we see another Chilewich mat, this time in stripes of soothing blues. Chilewich mats are crafted from vinyl yarns that are prized for their ability to withstand moisture, traffic, and cleaning.
Cool Blues
Blue is one of the most popular colors for the bathroom. It makes sense, too, since it's associated with water, relaxation, and spa vibes. Here, you see the power of a blue round or oval rug placement in the bathroom. Bathroom floor mats with rounded corners make the space appear larger while creating a softer appeal. And with braided bathroom rug construction, common in farmhouse rugs, you’ll enjoy enhanced durability and easier cleaning, which is a must for this space.

Chilled Grey
Grey is yet another soothing rug color that we love seeing in bathroom mat ideas. The skinny stripes of grey complement the marbled grey throughout this lovely bathroom, giving it a relaxing appeal. And since it’s a Chilewich mat, it promises to be easy to clean, moisture resistant, and long-lasting...the perfect fit for a master or guest bathroom.

Terry cloth and smooth cotton, knitted yarn, cork, pebbles - a do-it-yourself bath rug can be made from different materials and in different ways.

1. Striped bath mat made of terry towels
Such a rug will absorb water well due to the material from which it is sewn, and rather frequent parallel zigzag stitches give it sufficient rigidity. The main charm of this particular rug is the accentuated irregularity of the stripes that make it look like a zebra skin. For the rug you need two terry towels. From one (in this example, light), cut several uneven strips. From the same towel, cut out a rectangular piece of the bottom layer of the rug, from the second towel of a different color - the second of the same piece. First stitch the strips in a fairly frequent "zigzag" pattern, following the irregularities of the stripes. Then fold two layers of the rug face inward, sew, leaving an opening for turning inside out, turn inside out and sew up the opening. The edge can be stitched off. nine0004

Patchwork bath rug + towel embellishmentsBath rug can also be made using the patchwork technique. Sew the upper part of the rug from patches, and the lower part can be made, for example, from a towel or terry cloth, as in the master classes above. Mosaic patchwork stripes can also decorate bath towels - you get a set.

4. Woven bath rug in knit yarn
To make this rug, first knit several long strips of the same length. Knitted yarn is preferable, as cotton jersey is soft and hygroscopic, plus this yarn is so thick that you can knit it directly with your hands. The function of a loom can be performed by a board with two rows of nails driven in from two opposite edges. Pull a strong thread between the nails and weave the mat, knotting the joints of the strips. nine0004

5.
Bath rug made from fabric braidThis rug can also be made from used terry towels. Pick up several towels of harmonizing colors, cut them lengthwise into equal strips 2-3 centimeters wide. Sew the three strips together and start braiding, extending the strips with a new section when the previous one ends. It should be a long braid. Now you need to roll a spiral from it and stitch the layers in a zigzag or manually to make a round carpet. nine0004

Stitched mat
An important point for all fabric rugs:
If your bathroom floor has smooth tiles, you can protect the rug from slipping by adding a non-slip rubber mesh backing (sold in hardware stores) on the underside. Mesh can be glued or sewn on.

6. Stone bath rug
If you (or your children) like to collect smooth stones on the sea or river bank, as a result of which you have some supply of suitable stones - smooth, flat, not very small, you can make a bath rug out of them. (By the way, if there is not enough pebbles in the house, you can buy it, for example, in a landscape design store.) A rubber mat of a suitable size is used as a base, and you also need glue that can glue both rubber and stone.

8. Cork-finished wooden bath mat
You can assemble this bath mat from wooden planks yourself or buy it ready-made in a hardware store. The main point here is the top cork coating, which gives those very pleasant tactile sensations: it is very pleasant to stand barefoot on such a rug! Use sheet cork (sold in hardware stores) or cork cloth. Cut the material into strips of the desired size and glue to the wooden base. nine0004

From bags
A plastic bag bathroom rug has many advantages: recycled products save the family budget and have a positive impact on the environment. Such a rug will last a long time, because the material from which it is made does not absorb moisture. Garbage bags come in different shades, which means that the bathroom rug will please you with a variety of colors.
The photo shows a durable and pleasant to the touch rug, knitted from plastic bags.
Materials and tools
You will need:
- Plastic bags.
- Hook of the required size (depending on the thickness of the yarn).
- Scissors.
Step-by-step instructions
First, we will make yarn:
- Fold the bag "accordion", cut off the handles and bottom.
- We cut the workpiece into pieces, making equal indents of about 3 cm, we get large rings. nine0125
- We tie the edges of the rings with a knot and twist skeins of yarn from a double "thread".
- We tie a double thread on the hook, without tightening it.
- We pull the thread through the hole and get a loop through which we pull the thread again. You need to repeat these steps to form a short chain. We insert the hook into the first hole, tighten the thread and get a round base for the rug.
- We pass the hook into the nearest hole and pull out the "yarn". Two loops appear on the hook, through which we stretch the thread. One loop is formed again. According to this scheme, we increase the circle, not forgetting to make increases for each row. nine0002
- To change the color, untie a knot of polyethylene yarn, tighten the thread of the new shade into the ring and continue knitting until the product reaches the desired size.
From towels
The following workshop will teach you how to decorate your bathroom or toilet with a useful and cozy accessory without any expenses. A soft bath mat is easy to make with your own hands from old towels.
The photo shows a fluffy homemade rug made from waste towels. nine0004
Materials and tools
Needed:
- Several terry towels.
- Scissors.
- Thread, needle, pins.
Step-by-step instructions
Getting started:
- Take towels (if they are large bath towels, then 3 pieces will suffice) and cut them into long strips about 7 centimeters wide.
- We sew strips of the same colors. Then from three long strips you need to weave a pigtail. nine0002
-
To make the pigtail even, we fix it with pins and threads. Carefully twist the braid in a spiral, imperceptibly stitching the joints from the wrong side. Carpet is ready!
Pebbles
It's easy to make a bath rug out of small pebbles. Low cost, aesthetic texture and benefits for the legs are the undeniable advantages of a rug made of flat river stones.
Pictured is a do-it-yourself bath mat that provides foot massage after a shower. nine0004
What do you need?
Materials needed:
- Anti-slip rubber mat.
- Pebble (can be purchased at the store or assembled by yourself).
- All purpose adhesive (silicone or epoxy).
- Alcohol.
How to do it yourself?
Getting started:
- Degrease clean and dry stones with alcohol. We put a protective film or paper so as not to stain the work surface. We squeeze a drop of glue onto the stone, then onto the mat, press it. nine0002
-
Gradually fix all the stones. You can also lay out patterns, combining with pebbles in a contrasting color.
-
Some advise to use varnish to cover the finished product, but this is not recommended - in a room with high humidity it will crack. If desired, you can use tile grout. It is necessary to wait for the time according to the instructions on the tube of glue - and the mat can be used.
Cork rug
If you have a lot of wine or champagne corks in your house, you can make a natural and practical rug that will decorate your bathroom. Cork is an excellent material for wet rooms, as it is resistant not only to water, but also to various microorganisms.
Pictured is a wine cork mat that you can save up on your own or buy online.
What do you need?
Requires:
- About 170 bottle caps.
- Universal adhesive.
- Rubber mat for base.
- Knife and cutting board.
How to do it yourself?
Let's get started:
- We remove dirt and traces of wine by soaking bottle caps in white for several hours. Rinse well and dry.
- Using a cutting board and a knife, cut each cork in half.
- To provide additional protection against moisture, we process the finished product with a sealant. Let the cork mat dry before using it.
From pompoms
A very popular and inexpensive way to make a bathroom rug with your own hands is to knit it from pompoms. nine0004
Pictured is a fluffy pom-pom carpet that you can make yourself.
What do you need?
Materials needed:
- Knitting threads.
- Rubber mesh.
- Scissors.
How to do it yourself?
Let's get started:
- We wind the threads around the fingers, remove the resulting three-dimensional ring and tie it with a thread of the same color. We cut the threads, as shown in the photo:
- The amount of material depends on the desired product size. Tie each pom-pom to one side of the mesh. Cut off the ends of the threads.
- The closer the pompoms are to each other, the denser and more voluminous the rug will be. You can use different colors and sizes of blanks, then the product will look brighter and more interesting.
Out of old things
Putting things in order in the closet, do not throw away clothes that have served their purpose - jeans and T-shirts. They are useful for creating a rug that can be placed in the bath or shower. nine0004
The photo shows an elegant oval rug made from old clothes.
Materials and tools
You will need:
- Cotton T-shirts.
- Scissors.
- Sewing machine.
- Knitwear needle.
How to do it yourself?
Let's start creating a practical decoration for the bathroom:
- Making yarn from a T-shirt. To do this, cut it, as shown in the photo. First, we remove the upper and lower parts, then we make cuts without reaching the edge of the canvas. We cut the left part diagonally and get a continuous thread:
- Weave a long braid of three threads, sew it from both edges.
- We measure the length of the product and wrap the pigtail clockwise.
- We sew pigtails in a zigzag. At the beginning of the braid, we make a hem under the next layer and turn it again. We sew.
- Thus, we build up the mat of the desired diameter.
