Luxury hotel bedroom

25 ways to design a boutique hotel room |

(Image credit: Future / Chris Everard)

If you want to make bedtime – and yourself – feel special every night, these luxury bedroom ideas will provide the perfect inspiration for you to create a beautiful hotel-style sleep space in your own home.

And why not? We spend around a third of our lives in bed, so it makes sense that we should make sure that we’re giving ourselves the best experience, and highest quality rest we can.

And you can do this by creating a luxury bedroom that caters to all your needs, from inviting materials to comforting colors. Nearly every element is involved in creating bedroom ideas that will turn your space into something from a top tier hotel.

Luxury bedroom ideas

If you are looking for main bedroom ideas, or even guest bedroom ideas, with a focus on luxury, making these changes will not only make you feel like you’re on vacation (yes, even on a Sunday evening with a tough week looming), but you’ll find it easier to unwind and drift off into the deep sleep your body requires to truly rest and recover.

If you've ever wondered 'how can I make my bedroom look stylish?' then this is the advice for you. Below, with the help of interior designers and hoteliers, we bring you the best luxury bedroom ideas.

1. Make the bed the focus

This fabulous luxury bedroom is in the Gleneagles Townhouse in Edinburgh, Scotland, and is a fine example of how expert bedroom styling can make a space feel special, particularly if the focus are on your bed ideas.

‘The upholstery focuses on contemporary takes on traditional pieces, both in the shapes of the furniture and on the patterns and colors in the fabric,' says Charlie North, the designer behind the Gleneagles’ interiors, and Vice President of Interior Design at Ennismore. 'We love the canopy which helps give a sense of grandeur to the bed, but without needing a four-poster frame in the room. Again, we’ve used contemporary fabrics so the canopy doesn’t feel dated or twee. It reads like a confident statement. '

2. Put architecture into a square space

'If your bedroom doesn't have stand-out architecture, you may find it hard to add a luxurious feel with just a few light touches. However, you can add faux architectural elements to your space to make it feel more unique and layered,' says Lucy Searle, Editor in Chief, Homes & Gardens.

'Here, one of our favorite international designers, Charu Gandhi at Elicyon , has created architectural detailing with a dropped ceiling and wall panel-cum-mammoth headboard. The headboard in particular is very achievable and translatable, and shows how to design a bedroom with a feeling of grandeur.'

3. Screen off a workspace

It's likely in today's world that you may have to work from home, and the only space available might be your bedroom. If this is the case, you might be looking at bedroom layouts ideas with a desk as part of the floorplan.

This, of course, isn't necessarily conducive to a luxury bedroom, especially as it's hard to divide off a work space from a sleep space if square footage is a problem. However, perhaps you can do so with drapery? Here, a double-sided curtain glides neatly back and forwards at night to ensure the room feels like a sleep-only space; you can use clever joinery with trim to hide the curtain track in the ceiling.

4. Match the ceiling to the floor

Jay Jeffers is a California-based designer who created the interiors for The Madrona, a boutique hotel in the Sonoma County wine country.

'Cozy, clean, chic. These are the three words that came to mind when I was thinking of how I wanted a guest room at The Madrona to feel. The cool tones combined with the chunky knit throws and stools completely sets the perfect tone to a relaxing weekend.'

Note how ceiling ideas in this space include a textured wallpaper that matches the tones in the flooring below, cleverly creating a cocooning feel in a space that is decorated in cool colors.

5. Go overboard with fabrics and layering

A simple way to create a luxury bedroom is to invest in plenty of ways to use different but complementing fabrics and patterns within the space. Here, Henriette von Stockhausen of VSP Interiors gives a masterclass in country bedroom decorating.

'I personally like to compound the feeling of coziness and comfort by using darker colors on the inside of the beds as it helps create that womb like experience and a feeling of security that one craves after a long day at work,' says Henriette.

'One tip to keep the budget down is to choose a cheaper fabric for the inside as it needs a lot of meterage and choose the more expensive fabric on the outside where less is needed, especially if the bed only has back and side curtains at the head end.

6. Furnish a luxury bedroom with antique finds

The Pig at Harlyn Bay

Decorating with antiques is a fail-safe way to create a luxury bedroom. This space is one of the many bedrooms in one of the many Pig Hotels , and it shows how rustic bedroom ideas can feel luxurious.

Owner and founder Judy Hutson, who along with her husband hotelier Robin, put individual room at the heart of their bedrooms, shares that including older pieces in a room is vital to it feeling luxury.

'It helps give it an enveloped look and is so intrinsic to our ethos. We buy our antiques and vintage pieces from lots of sources in the UK and abroad.'

Whether you incorporate a cherished family heirloom, or bring in a classic copper bath, great for master bedroom ideas with bath, these finishing touches can add inviting character and personality to the space.

7. Bring a bathtub into a bedroom

Combining luxury bedroom ideas with luxury bathroom ideas makes sense if you want the boutique feel but don't have the space for an ensuite.

Here, in Louisiana's chic hotel The Chloe , bath ideas are comfortably combined into the bedroom. Designed by Sara Ruffin Costello , the rooms follow the hotel's  dusty sapphire and blushing rosé color scheme – and its accentuated Victorian original features for an indisputable nod to luxury. This unconventional bedroom furnishing may have its practical assets, but it is also an exquisite focal point that will steal the limelight and add hints of regency into any space.

8. Go for a pared-back feel that's still luxurious

Luxury bedrooms needn't be opulent or overtly what might traditionally be called 'feminine'. In fact it's easy to create a luxurious feel for women who prefer a pared-back look or anyone looking for bedroom ideas for men.

Interior designer Kelly Wearstler shows how in this boutique space she designed at The Proper . Kelly's creative vision for the rooms seamlessly blends past and present with compelling design, vintage influence, local art and, of course, attention to detail, seen in her selection and combination of fabrics for bedding and upholstery.

9. Step back into nature

(Image credit: Future / Chris Everard)

Painting both walls and ceiling in the same color can create a cocooning feel, particularly in cozy small bedrooms. Soft greens were used in this garden-inspired room, and adding leafy patterns and florals works well as they’re all based on the same color palette.

The Colefax and Fowler bedroom curtain ideas tie in nicely with the headboard, covered in Rapture & Wright ’s Walled Garden fabric. It shows how accessories can help bring the design to life – including the Wisteria lamps with Empire shades in Cloud Chevrons by Pooky .

10. Center a scheme around one color palette

(Image credit: Future / James Merrell)

Picking bedroom color ideas in one core shade and using different tones of it is a way to be bold without incidentally clashing. Wendi Wolf Lewitt designed this cocooning pink bedroom as such, with built-in open shelving, too, so personal belongings can be displayed.

11. Play with panelling

(Image credit: Future / Emma Lee)

Wall paneling ideas are a popular way to add character to your walls in luxury bedrooms, and there are plenty of techniques to try. Consider cladding half or three-quarters of the height of your walls and painting the wood in a contrasting color.

Test out the shades in your room before committing, to see what they look like in different lights. The woodwork here is finished in Paint & Paper Library ’s Blue Gum, which looks much brighter as light floods the space, complementing the headboard and drapes.

The tongue and groove design not only adds an interesting visual element but is practical, too. It allows the wiring of the light and touchscreen below to be hidden and has created a shelf for pictures above – perfect if you are looking for hard-working yet luxurious bedroom ideas.

12. Give antique furniture a refresh

(Image credit: Future / Alecia Neo)

A bold paint job is often all it takes to give antique furniture a new lease of life, which interior designer Elizabeth Hay has done with these two locally found beds.

The deep red makes a bold statement, so paler tones were applied to the walls for balance. This mix of bright colors and eclectic patterns is perfect inspiration when considering bohemian bedroom ideas.

13. Focus on the details

(Image credit: Future / Brent Darby)

Hotel-inspired luxury bedroom ideas are all in the details.

‘Fabrics are a really effortless way to add a decorative element to a bedroom,’ says Hayley McAfee, design director of Villa Nova . ‘Upholstered pieces, such as a headboard or chair, can act as a starting point for the rest of the room.

Consider different bedroom layout ideas, too. Could you reposition your bed to comfortably cater for an armchair or two? Doing so can heighten the feeling of luxury.

14. Pick your palette

(Image credit: Future / Chris Everard)

‘The bedroom is somewhere you want to relax, unwind and switch off from the everyday. Tranquil blue tones and calming neutrals not only look luxurious, but are known for their relaxing and regenerative powers,’ explains Zoffany designer Peter Gomez – like in this soothing all-blue bedroom.

‘Using muted, pared-back hues will create a sophisticated and soothing space. If you want something a bit warmer, a shade like pewter will help to create a cozy, cocooning environment where you can wrap yourself up and escape from it all.’

15. Enhance a focal point

While we may envy the cool bedroom ideas of five-star hotels, we must remember that bedrooms are deeply personal spaces and should be decorated accordingly.

‘If you are tempted to have a bedroom accent wall or wallpaper, then it is best to use the wall behind the bed to ground the room,’ says Joe Studholme, Farrow & Ball ’s color curator. ‘But if you are feeling daring you might consider extending your bedroom wallpaper ideas to the ceiling – you will spend a lot of time admiring it from the bed!’

Putting bedroom mirror ideas on the headboard wall is another way to create a luxury appeal, and reflect light to enhance the space, too.

16. Invest in stylish storage

(Image credit: Future / Emma Lewis)

Are you looking for luxury bedroom ideas that will recreate the high-end aesthetic of a hotel room? Then bespoke storage is the most stylish option for you.

‘Bespoke fitted furniture allows you to create a tailored storage solution that not only maximizes use of the space, but is also designed to suit what you want to put away and what you want to display,’ says Roselind Wilson, owner and director of Roselind Wilson Design .

Fitted furniture created bespoke is a useful option if you're struggling for small bedroom storage ideas, too.

‘It’s also the perfect opportunity to create a statement design that is as individual as you are. You can specify materials and colors to match your room scheme or existing items of furniture, and a style that suits your taste and type of property.’

17. Play with pattern

(Image credit: Future / Catherine Gratwicke)

‘Mixing patterns is one of the most enjoyable parts of a design scheme,‘ says textile designer Bethie Tricks . ‘I tend to use the rule of three as a starting point – pulling together patterns that share a similar color or design element to ensure they echo each other subtly while adding variety and a sense of continuity.

'Using the biggest pattern on the floor in the form of a rug helps to anchor a space. Apply another on one of the main pieces of furniture, such as a headboard or armchair, and finish with either patterned wall decor for your bedroom or drapes.

'You can pick out colors from these patterns to finish the scheme when choosing your bedding and other decorative accessories.’

18. Opt for pure artistry with a mural

(Image credit: Future / Jake Curtis)

Choose the right design for your space and follow the latest bedroom trends to take a feature wall to the next level with wall mural ideas. From hand-blocked panels to digitally printed vistas, murals of picturesque landscapes are an expressive way to bring epic scale and romance to a scheme

In luxury bedroom ideas you want to use calm colors that evoke the pace and tranquility of far away shores.

19. Incorporate decorative panelling

(Image credit: Future / Paul Raeside)

Panelling is a simple way to bring architectural shape to featureless rooms, while protecting walls from the general wear and tear of family life. Intricate fretwork, simple rustic boards and traditional panels all offer their own distinctive style – and add a luxurious finish to any space.

Available in a wide range of mouldings, from subtle tongue and groove to grand period designs, or more modern design statements like the feature wall above, there’s a panelling style to suit every bedroom.

20. Size it up

(Image credit: Future / Simon Bevan)

The headboard you choose will set the tone in luxury bedroom ideas, and opting for an oversized statement style can help anchor the space.

For your own scheme, consider creating a headboard with your favorite fabric for a finish that feels personal. Go for wall-mounted headboard ideas that also sit on the floor for support, and finish with stud work or a contrasting pipework for luxurious hotel-style look.

21. Swap out your sheets

We’ve all been in a luxury hotel and come away dreaming about how soft and luxurious the sheets on the bed felt. However, as Lucy Ackroyd, head of design at Christy notes, ‘it’s incredibly easy to replicate this feeling in your own home simply by ensuring you have the best bedding for the job.’

Take inspiration from the exquisite bedding in this inviting gray bedroom idea. ‘Crisp, clean sheets give an instant feeling of luxury,’ says Lucy. ‘Opt for pure cotton, high thread count linen which will help regulate temperature and moisture levels. Plus, they will feel much smoother against the skin than synthetic offerings.’

22. Dress for success

(Image credit: Future / Mark Bolton)

The simple act of styling a bed properly will make your bedroom feel extra special and luxurious, or set the perfect tone for impressive luxury bedroom ideas.

In theory, there are myriad ways to dress your bed, but if you’re looking for that chic, luxury hotel room look, there are a few tips to take into account that will elevate your bed both in terms of style and comfort.

‘On a double bed, go for two pillows on each side and invest in a couple of pillow shams to match your bedding,’ says Lucy. ‘Place the pillow shams on top of your usual pillows to hide them behind a more elegantly coordinated facade.’

‘Next comes the cushions,’ explains Lucy. ‘Go for somewhere between three and six cushions depending on the width of your bed, and group them together by size, with the largest at the back. For the finishing touch, a statement throw (or two!) is essential for a luxe, beautifully dressed bed.’

23. Consider your materials

(Image credit: Future / Alicia Taylor)

No matter how pretty you’ve made your luxury bedroom ideas look by styling the bed to the nines, remember that what’s on the inside counts, too.

Lucy suggests: ‘Opt for good quality, filled inner bedding that will stand the test of time and maintain that plush feeling after every wash. Plus, make sure to fluff up pillows and duvets every time you dress your bed for that full, cozy, "can’t wait to dive in” feeling.’

24. Add serenity with scent

(Image credit: Future / Mark Bolton)

Smell is one of our most powerful senses, and can completely change your mood, as well as transport you somewhere else. It’s no surprise, then, that the right scents can put your body into relaxation and sleep mode – making scent layering a must for luxury bedroom ideas that exude calm and tranquility.

‘Lavender has long been known as a popular sleep aid, and for good reason, as research highlights the calming effect is has on the nervous system,’ says Lucy. ‘To really engage the senses, layer your scents throughout the room – a diffuser will ensure your choice of aroma hits you every time you enter the room, while candles will provide additional ambience whilst also giving a glorious hit of fragrance.’

Do remember, however, to always keep candles at a safe distance from your sheets and extinguish well before you think you’ll nod off.

25. Create calm with color

(Image credit: Future / Mel Yates)

The color palette you choose for your bedroom can have a surprisingly big impact on your sleep. When selecting your color scheme, consider the feeling and mood you want in the room and see which colors evoke these in you.

‘White bedrooms are known for feeling bright and airy, and can help provide a sense of cleanliness – particularly useful if you have been working from home and are feeling trapped within the four walls,’ advises Lucy.

Blue and green bedrooms are both calming, as these colors evoke the feeling of being outdoors. However, make sure to avoid colors like red or orange, which are stimulating and could diminish the all important wind-down before sleep.’

How can I make my bedroom luxurious?

If you are after simple ways to add a touch of luxury to your bedroom, look no further than decorative elements.

Decoration is all about accessories. A quick way to incorporate more detail into your scheme is with cushions, throws and lampshades. You can switch these out easily, season to season, or as your mood changes.

How can I make my room look expensive?

An easy way to create expensive looking luxury bedroom ideas is with a decorative mural or wallpaper. ‘Beyond just decoration, the transportive effects of a scenic wallpaper within a bedroom creates expansive surroundings at an intimate scale,’ says Claud Cecil Gurney, founder of de Gournay .

Another way to add grandeur is to introduce art to your space. ‘Bedrooms are our private inner sanctuaries and, given that artwork is such a personal choice, it can be used to elevate schemes and provide a sense of identity,’ says Roslyn Keet, associate director of David Collins Studio .

5 WAYS TO ACHIEVE A LUXURY BOUTIQUE HOTEL-STYLE BEDROOM

And relax!

I’m talking that exquisitely indulgent moment – the moment when you first melt into a sumptuous hotel bed. Transient, yes but oh-so memorable. Gently fragranced overstuffed pillows, fluffy robe, soft lighting – a home from home…only much, much better! The beautiful boutique hotel is no ordinary pied-à-terre. It represents pure, unadulterated luxury. It’s no wonder that so many of us look to achieve the ’boutique hotel-style bedroom’ when renovating our homes.

Image: Sophie Paterson Interiors

But what makes a master bedroom feel like a luxury hotel? Tricky, where there’s a distinct lack of turn-down service and pillow-chocolates… This is a question I’m constantly exploring and was something I considered closely when redesigning my own master bedroom.

Relaxing in my master bedroom which I gave a luxury boutique hotel style transformation

Packaged into 5 neat sections, I hope that this post will guide you to achieve a truly aspirational and luxurious boutique hotel-style bedroom of your own.

#1. COLOUR SCHEME | LUXURY BOUTIQUE HOTEL-STYLE BEDROOM

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – colour is key. And I use the term loosely as it can also refer to ‘lack of’! For ideas on the latest colour trends in 2018, read my post here.

A pivotal device for all rooms, colour can set the tone of your scheme, creating mood and atmosphere. The right hue can even induce sleep. For hotel-inspired luxury living, the palette requires a certain sophistication. Fuschia pink walls just don’t quite cut it. The overall colour-scheme should be considered holistically; from wall-coverings to wardrobe finishes, linens and flooring.

Keeping the overall palette chic and understated in my own bedroom

THE ‘FOUNDATION’ PALETTE

I generally opt for soft, easy-neutrals as the ‘foundation’ of a luxe hotel-inspired space. By this, I mean the larger, more permanent pieces – headboards, wardrobes or curtains. Choosing the perfect paint colour can be really tricky and you should consider various factors such as the orientation of your room (more advice on this here).

Image: Sarah Mailer Design

My go-to colours range from chalky whites, greige, mushroom, stone and taupe to feather, green-greys, silver, soft champagne and golden hues.   Dusky pinks and pale blush are also fabulous contemporary options for walls, linens and window treatments. Gentle blues with warmer undertones can also sing.

For my own, north-facing master bedroom, Farrow and Ball’s classic Elephant’s Breath was the perfect solution. A contemporary neutral paint with warm, red/lilac undertones, this hue has beautiful depth and a soothing quality. For continuity – and to extend the feeling of space – the woodwork and radiator dutifully received a couple of coats too.

My bedroom is painted in classic Farrow and Ball colour, Elephant’s Breath

WALLCOVERINGS

Wallcoverings are used extensively in luxury boutique hotels as they bring textural interest and depth to a space. If you’re looking to work with wallpaper in your home, first and foremost, I recommend choosing something that you love. And don’t be afraid to hang everywhere, especially if a subtle grass-cloth or gently textured silk appeals.

If paring with paint, allow the wallcovering to guide the colour. Whilst the heavily accented feature wall is pretty dated, use subtlety and flow as a contemporary way of combining wallpaper and paint. If you’re looking for on-trend wallpaper inspiration, this blog post is for you.

Image: Sarah Mailer Design

Wallpaper selection is quite personal but I always find myself gravitating towards textural or gently curved patterns and subtle, loose prints. Even a floral works but I recommend softness for a hotel-inspired luxury master bedroom. Sophisticated serenity is the goal.

BUILDING THE SCHEME

It’s always worth injecting a bit of contrast or colour into your scheme. Dark wood, deep bronze or black accents work well with lighter, muted neutrals as they ground the design and offer ‘weight’. Add punch through bedside tables, fireplace surrounds or statement lighting. Smaller accents – candles, framing or hardware – also work incredibly effectively. It’s amazing what a matte black handle can do to lift a wardrobe door.

Image: Sarah Mailer Design

Fashionable metallics and iridescent finishes can transform a palette. From rose-gold, copper and chrome to pewter, bronze and brass, a metallic pop can really sizzle. Mix and match with confidence (I’ve written more on this here).

Brights can also be introduced through soft furnishings and accessories – essentially, inter-changable aspects that don’t require huge commitment. When designing a luxury master bedroom, the ‘colours’ that I generally select tend to be more ‘balmy’ than ‘bright’.

#2. STATEMENT FURNITURE | LUXURY BOUTIQUE HOTEL-STYLE BEDROOM

THE BED

The bed (and headboard) should be the focal point of the luxury master bedroom scheme. Aim to position centrally in the space and work symmetrically around it if possible. One of the best pieces of advice that I can give is to go for the largest bed that the space can handle. My bedroom is really quite small but a good night’s sleep wins every time! After all, if you want to achieve total hotel luxury, comfort is paramount.

For a mattress, I champion anything with a topper. Go for the best that you can afford – it’s a long-term,worthwhile investment after all. I would also suggest you always try before you buy to avoid costly mistakes.

THE HEADBOARD

Image: Laura Hammett Interiors

Whether you’re buying a new bed in its entirety or simply adding a separate headboard, consider how to achieve that ‘wow’ factor. Drama and unashamed opulence is certainly a key aspect of the luxury hotel and this can be achieved through scale.

As my own master bedroom is so tiny, I designed a full height, vertically upholstered bespoke headboard which was wall-hung. This strong emphasis on verticality encourages a feeling of height and space (read more here in my interior design secrets post). It also offers a strong, statement backdrop for the layered cushions. We installed bespoke mirrors either side to add to the symmetry and drama!

Dressing the bed – one of my favourite parts!

Beautiful upholstery denotes classic luxury and elegance. Choose timeless fabrics like silk, satin, velvet or the more understated cotton-linen for the ultimate in hotel luxury living. Deep buttoned styles, studding and sectioned headboards always appeal to me. Sectional headboards are also perfect for spaces with limited access – small corridors or cramped staircases – so always consider this when planning your scheme.

Toy with interesting shapes – curves or architectural motifs for a different take or explore the ultimate luxury – an upholstered wall. Meanwhile, a framed headboard offers the perfect opportunity to introduce dark wood or black for that all important contrast.

Image: Sarah Mailer Design

I’m also a huge fan of low-level headboards which span across the back of the bed and beyond. These can really emphasize the feeling of horizontality within the space. Finish with some artwork above to fill the ‘void’. Cushions, artwork bedside lamps should work in proportion with the headboard.

Image: Laura Hammett Interiors

ADDITIONAL FURNITURE

Nothing says ‘luxury boutique hotel’ more than a seating area within a bedroom scheme. If you’re lucky enough to have the space for some occasional chairs and a little table – go for it! At the very least, an end-of-bed upholstered bench or storage ottoman is #goals. My master bedroom has no such space and so I’m forced to live vicariously through my clients. A sofa or bath is clearly denotes next-level luxe.

Image: Sophie Paterson Interiors

Wardrobes don’t have to be cumbersome. Ideally, they will be in-built (or at least appear to be with careful surrounds). Go for the maximum amount of storage that you can as this is everything. The luxury hotel bedroom certainly doesn’t ever feel cluttered and unmanageable, so the more secret spaces available for you to hide things away, the better.

To avoid wardrobes looking bulky, consider painting them the same colour as the walls so that they simply ‘melt’ away. I also love to use wallpaper on wardrobe doors, whether within panelled recesses or wrapped-around. To avoid looking pastiche and for durability, go for beautiful textured vinyls or silk coverings.

Image: Sarah Mailer Design

Bedside tables don’t have to come as a matching pair, although I love it when they do! And so does the luxury boutique hotel. (We’re suckers for symmetry).

Aim to keep them lower than your mattress and proportionate to your bed (so aim for wider if you have a Super-King like me). Of course, this isn’t always possible but certainly something to bear in mind, should space allow. Remember that dark colours can feel weighty and so these work well either side a large bed and oversized headboard. Also, dark wood like wenge or walnut is beautifully timeless.

#3. LUXE LINEN & SOFT FURNISHINGS | LUXURY BOUTIQUE HOTEL-STYLE BEDROOM

I make my bed every day and I cannot recommend it enough. I maintain that it’s good for the soul! Arriving home to an unmade bed can be stressful and doesn’t set a restful tone for your evening ahead.

LINEN

It’s all about the luxe linen. This Luxury 600 Thread Count White Bed Linen was gifted by The Secret Linen Store

Using the appropriate linen as a base to making your bed is key to achieving that boutique hotel-inspired look. I tend to opt for luxury plains with high thread counts. The Oxford border always offers another dimension of elegance. I would recommend investing in quality bed linen, as it not only needs to look inviting but feel it too. Slipping into beautifully pressed sheets at the end of a long day is also incredibly ‘hotel-luxe’.

DRESS THE BED

Image: Sophie Paterson Interiors

Consider the linen as your bed’s foundation. Finish ‘dressing’ it with a large textural bedspread or throw, a soft blanket and some beautiful cushions. Layering is key. Mix patterns, textures and finishes – from herringbone weaves to mohair knits or quilted cushions. Stick to feather-filled stuffing for cushion karate-chop perfection. And for unashamed luxury, go velvet. Trims can be a beautiful finishing feature and I’m always an advocate of a piped-edge.

Image: Sophie Paterson Interiors

You can have a little play with colour here (I have been known to throw in a mustard, gold or olive green)! Explore scale too – using larger cushions as a backdrop for smaller accents in the foreground. For some gorgeous cushion ideas, click here for my need-to-know one stop shop.

WINDOW TREATMENTS

Curtains? Blinds? Shutters?

My beautiful chandelier added the perfect finishing touch to my boutique hotel-style bedroom! You can buy the same here

Windows vary greatly in their style, size, depth and finish. For my unsightly UPVC run (sigh), I opted for a semi-sheer blind in a soft white, which allows natural light to diffuse into the space. This creates a universally flattering effect and effectively hides the plastic frame.  A simple trick that I can’t recommend enough, semi-sheer roller blinds are inexpensive and also aid climate control. Alternatively, you could install sheer voils to similar effect.

For a streamlined and luxurious look in the bedroom, I’m a huge advocate for floor to ceiling interlined and blackout curtains. Hang them high to visually elevate your ceiling height, adding grandeur and glamour to the space. When a significant run of fabric is being used, I generally opt for a plain or lightly patterned finish rather than anything too heavy or brash. Less is more, after all.

#4. LIGHTING | LUXURY BOUTIQUE HOTEL-STYLE BEDROOM

Image: Sarah Mailer Design

This element is so often overlooked but is one of the most important factors in styling the perfect luxury boutique hotel-style bedroom. Beautiful hotel rooms create mood and atmosphere, achieved through an artfully layered lighting scheme. From the soft, diffused, ambient lighting either side of the bed to the task light on a dressing table for perfect make-up application. Again, scale is key so don’t be afraid to go tall with your bedside lamps if your headboard is imposing for balance and flow.

Install little reading lights either side for practicality and consider a low-level glow through LED strip lighting under the bedside tables. This also works behind the headboard, creating a soft wash across the walls. Keep those ceiling spotlights turned off. Instead, a statement pendant or chandelier – always on a dimmer – completes the look and can add real ‘wow’ factor.

For a flattering evening glow, candles are your friends. Use generously.

Image: Sarah Mailer Design

#5. STYLING & ACCESSORIES | LUXURY BOUTIQUE HOTEL-STYLE BEDROOM

Essentially jewellery for the bedroom, curate select pieces on your surfaces to give it some ‘sparkle’. It’s important to appeal to all senses in the accessories you choose.

SMALL ACCESSORIES

Feel dreamy with a luxury scented candle burning early-evening (an edit of my all-time-favourites will be appearing on Girl About House very soon). Pretty perfume bottles also work effectively as a styling tool, whilst pillow sprays look lovely and can induce sleep too – win/win. I like to display these on the bedside table, space dependent.

All the ingredients for a fabulous boutique hotel-style bedroom scheme

Add textural variation with extra blankets or rugs, which are especially welcomed when the temperature drops. Plants or flowers also inject visual interest – go faux if you’re looking for minimal upkeep. They can also be used to introduce a pop of colour and more organic shapes into the scheme.

ARTWORK AND MIRRORS

When planning how to dress your walls, a big question mark hangs in the air. Should you forgo the TV?

In theory, yes. This is, however, somewhat rich coming from me <insert hiding monkey emoji here> with a 40 inch monstrosity currently installed on angled bracket. I love to watch a box-set from the comfort of my own bed as much as I would from my holiday retreat. Visually, TVs are a nightmare so try to be clever with the placement. If you want to embrace mindfulness and pure serenity then perhaps leave it at the door. The jury’s out here…

Image: Sophie Paterson Interiors

The big TV debate aside, embellish your walls with beautiful mirrors and treasured artwork. I used mirrors either side of my bed to enlarge the space – a trick many miniature boutique hotels also adopt. Eglomisé, foxed and other antiqued finishes are softer on the eye and more flattering. Artwork can be used to add focal point to empty wall space – from pretty watercolours and understated line-drawings to layered prints.

AND FINALLY – BREAKFAST IN BED?

If you’re unwilling to commit to a chocolate on the pillow every night, consider investing in a large, coordinating breakfast tray. Perfect to use on those casual, breakfast-in-bed mornings. Those days when you have nowhere else to be (said no mum, ever)! Ideally, assign someone else to make the pancakes and finish with an extra helping of maple syrup!

All you really need is a breakfast-in-bed tray.

A riot of color in a Manhattan bedroom. But pay attention, there are no eye-catching tones here, it seems that this is a watercolor drawing. The whole secret is in a harmonious combination, the colors seem to flow into each other against a grayish background. nine0003

10 ideas for the bedroom, which we spied on in top hotels

You don't want to leave these hotels - their interiors are so beautiful. And your bedroom can be the same! nine0003

Publication date: 08/23/2019

Material prepared: Anastasia Ilinykh

Some of these solutions need to be implemented already at the design stage, while others - decorating techniques - can be implemented at any time in an already finished interior. nine0003

1. King size bed and bed linen bespoke

A comfortable bed is the centerpiece of any bedroom. At New York's Hoxton Hotel, Ensismore's designers opted for a luxurious model with a wooden base, roomy drawers and a velvet headboard. A well-chosen hand-embroidered bed linen was the perfect complement.

2. Modern interpretation of the classics

The Plaza Athenee Hotel is located in the very center of Paris, on Avenue Montaigne, where Marlene Dietrich once lived and Rudolf Nureyev danced.

The secret of its interiors lies in moderation, trendy colors (see how refined gray sets off burgundy) and, of course, impeccable taste. The classic interior was diluted with modern elements - laconic lamps and furniture with smooth facades.

3. Dusty pinks

Camillas Hus Boutique Hotel in Oslo, built in 1845, is named after writer Camilla Collette, considered Norway's first feminist. The interior is fully consistent with this background: it was kept in dusty shades of pink. And so that the monochrome does not look boring, the designers skillfully played with textures and mixed different materials.

4. Full-length mirror behind the headboard

This 1930s-inspired hotel in Cannes was designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon. Together with the general light color scheme, the mirror wall makes the room visually several times larger. If you like interiors with a lot of light and air, this is the perfect solution. nine0052

5. Exterior as part of the interior

At The Hari, the landscape outside the window is no longer just a beautiful view - the designers of Tara Bernerd & Partners have come up with the idea of making it part of the interior. And for good reason: the view of the London street decorates better than any art. If your windows offer picturesque landscapes, why not take advantage of this advantage and ask the designer to create the perfect place to contemplate the beautiful?

6. Interior box: matching prints on wallpaper and textiles

At The Montague on the Gardens, London, designers weren't afraid to play with active, contrasting patterns and bold hues. Identical patterns create an optical illusion, as if erasing the boundaries between objects and expanding the space.

7. Chic headboard

Another London hero of our selection is the Covent Garden Hotel. For different rooms, designer Keith Kemp, an adherent of the English style in a fashionable reading, chose different design options for a soft headboard. And all are equally gorgeous: watercolor floral prints in bright colors, floral and geometric patterns. Our favorite is high embroidered headboards. nine0052

8. Dark walls and houndstooth print

Stylish, concise and not boring at the same time - this is about the interiors of the Nerva Hotel in Rome. Ideal for those who love minimalism, but do not see their ideal bedroom without interesting accents. It looks especially great in combination with colored elements: it can be textiles or art on the wall.

9. Floor-to-ceiling windows and lounge area

We are sure that such a relaxation area will become your favorite place in the house. Here you can read books on autumn evenings, admire the sunset with a glass of wine in your hand, watch the city wake up in the morning - and all with the same pleasure. And golden accents add even more polish to this Jaime Berjestein interior.

10. Frescoes on the walls

Back in the Middle Ages, here, in the heart of Tuscany, pilgrims stopped to rest on their way. Now it's a five-star boutique hotel Borgo Santo Pietro, but everything in it keeps the spirit of those times - including traditional Italian frescoes on the walls. A great option if you miss the atmosphere of sunny Italy. nine0003
