From ultra sleek minimalist style bedrooms to warm modern rustic decor schemes, from crisp white Scandinavian style to a cacophony of colourful options, there is something here to suit everyone. Discover truly creative headboard feature wall designs that incorporate extruded panels and integrated LED strips that will set your imagination all aglow. Find bags of designer bedroom lamps and pendant lights, slick modern bedside units, drawers and shelves and beautiful closets in which to store your very own daily catwalk collection to dress for success come morning.

Give your modern bedroom design a platform. The low slung platform bed has become a highly desired piece of modern bedroom furniture, and they come in a whole host of designs and finishes. This one is upholstered in an eye-catching red fabric over the base and an attached low level headboard. A copper and grey panelled feature wall complement its russet tones.

Colour your way to a restful night’s sleep. A vision of blue greets us in bedroom number two. Blue is a serene and soothing colour, and could help promote relaxation and sleep.

Create a stunning headboard feature wall using light and shade. This design uses extruded panels and LED strip lights to make a truly unique installation that you won’t find round your friend’s pad.

Make a small bedroom feel bigger by installing a floor-to-ceiling frameless mirror. The reflection of the room in the mirror confuses the eye into seeing a larger space.

Warm up a plain white bedroom scheme with modern wall sconces in gleaming copper. A bright accent chair will help the scheme to pop too.

Unique ceiling fans are a must in warm climates. Consider the beauty of your ceiling fan as an integral part of the decor, as you would with a bedroom pendant light. Statement bedroom wall clocks make a nice alternative to an apologetic looking tiny bedside alternative too.

Headboard storage niches are a great option if space is limited for bedside tables. This bedroom design has both.

Consider hanging a pendant light over the bedside unit instead of taking up valuable table space with a lamp. The contemporary bedroom chandelier in this scheme is a real show stopper. A bedside floor lamp is another trendy alternative.

Choose wall mounted bedside shelves rather than floor standing units for a clean and crisp look. These two bedside shelves hold copper desk lamps on top and stow the usual bedside clutter out of sight in a shallow hidden drawer.

Layer up bedroom lighting options. This design has an illuminated headboard feature wall, bedside table lamps and a ceiling light installation that looks like a sculptural piece of art.

Visually anchor your bed in the room by placing a large area rug beneath it. It will also keep your toes cosy till you get your slippers on.

Go asymmetrical with the bedroom pendant lights you hang over bedside units, it will loosen up a static layout.

Reflective closet doors will make your bedroom feel bigger, rather than just closing off the occupied space.

Minimalist bedrooms aren’t just for minimalists. A tidy room promotes a tidy mind, and a tidy mind leads to restful sleep.

Try decorating with light instead of colour…

… Or even with coloured light.

If you can’t settle on a specific colour of light, buy LED strips with colour changing capabilities.

Don’t go too mad with a favourite colour. If you’ve fallen in love with a bold bed or bedroom accent chair, then take it easy on the backdrop and go for a neutral shade to pull it all together.

Open up the side of an en suite bathroom. The latest bedroom designs feature open plan bathrooms and shower rooms. The combined rooms certainly make the space feel a lot larger but the exhibitionist nature of the layout perhaps isn’t for shy types.

A four poster bed always has, and always will, bring a certain something to a bedroom. Imagine this same room without the top frame on the bed… just doesn’t hit the same mark does it.

Forget about hanging your wall art. Propping a large piece of wall art on the floor, or even layering up a few pieces, evokes a cool laid back atmosphere.

Refresh your sleep space with the living greenery of indoor plants.

If you like this geometric headboard wall design, check out these other great bedroom accent wall ideas.

Wooden accent walls look cosy and warm, as if they are giving the bedroom a hug. This bedroom also has a beautiful wood panelled frame that goes up and over a reading nook by the window.

Make a modern rustic bedroom by combining a wooden feature wall with tree branch art and a decorative wall mirror framed by a handsome nest of twigs.

Use a unique floor lamp as a central light in rooms with a lofty ceiling height.

Mid century modern bedroom furniture brings a relaxed yet ultra stylish vibe.

Bring a slice of your favourite place into your sleep space by painting a modern mural or adding decals like this Amsterdam themed room. For more inspiration, take a look at these other city themed bedrooms.

Pick out some of the planks in a wooden feature wall with white paint or a darker stain.

Add a modern bedroom bench at the foot of the bed for a polished high-end boudoir.

Bring in found objects and patterned headboards to curate a modern bohemian bedroom.

A Scandinavian bedroom is all about stylish simplicity. This uncomplicated aesthetic works perfectly for a modern kids’ room.

If you need something more uplifting than just a cup of coffee to get you up and at ‘em in the mornings, then how about hanging some motivational art?

Consider all of your colour options. A room with lots of natural daylight doesn’t automatically put all the decor possibilities in the light end of the colour spectrum. A dark bedroom decor scheme could help you to feel cosy and cocooned.

Zone a sleep space with a podium. A bedroom in a small studio apartment, or a large loft space like this one, can be zoned by building a step up from the rest of the open plan layout. The raised floor acts as a podium on which the bed and bedroom furniture can stand.

A platform bed doesn’t have to be all hard lines and sharp corners. Check out this curvaceous little number.

Bring some sheen to the bedsides with oversized metallic globe pendant lights.

Install a glass partition wall around an en suite to open up the space but keep bathroom steam inside. Privacy curtains can be drawn around the outside when in use.

Decorate with a shape theme. This bedroom has concentric circles swirling over the headboard, a circular area rug on the floor, and rounded pendant lights over the bedsides.

Fashion a headboard storage wall. The extra storage cubbies compensate for the lack of space on small side tables.

Make use of every available space. This built-in house bed sits flush with the eaves and has a bespoke bookcase at the opposite side. There are also book shelves and cabinets in the space behind the bed. If this is a bit of you, then you’ll love these other bedrooms for book lovers.

Select dual tone bedclothes. Even a bed of neutrals can look interesting if you mix and match two different colours, like this mid grey and soft brown ensemble.

Have your own boutique clothes store in your bedroom. With clear glass closet doors and some well placed lighting strips along rails and shelves, you can create your very own chic fashion boutique that is poised to serve you every single day. Caution: these types of bedrooms with attached wardrobe on display are best suited to neat freaks and closet organisation extraordinaires.

Sleep amongst nature. This bedroom with courtyard design would make every night feel like camping – or glamping.

Explore unusual rug ideas to bring texture to a plain bedroom scheme – like the pebble rug in this white bedroom.

Throw off a samey colour scheme with just one contrasting coloured item. This sky blue bedroom has a single yellow chair to add a bit of sunshine.

Soften an industrial style bedroom backdrop with a cushioned headboard and upholstered bed base.

A grey bedroom can be a base for many different colours.

Sink to swim. This sunken floor bed design and sunken bathtub make a swimmingly good combo.

Polish up a modern industrial bedroom with sleek furniture and designer lighting.

54 Inspiring Modern Bedroom Ideas

1

Mirrored Walls (Not Ceilings)

Stephen Kent Johnson

The bedroom of Apparatus’s Gabriel Hendifar New York City apartment is an object lesson in how a mirrored wall—long considered a relic of a bygone era—can be just what a modern bedroom needs. The custom brass bed is topped with a bedcover and bolster in Zak+Fox fabrics. The pendant and nightstand are by Apparatus.

2

Sinuous Accent Chaise

Ty Cole Studio

As much as you may want your bedroom to be a quiet sanctuary, the presence of a dramatic piece of furniture, like this sinuous rocking chaise by Igor Rodrigues in a 2Michaels townhouse project on the Upper West Side, won’t keep you up past bedtime.

3

All Out Aubergine

David Land

There is no more sophisticated shade of purple than eggplant, as evidenced in this Brooklyn family residence designed by Danielle Fennoy of Revamp. The bedroom walls are covered in Farrow & Ball’s Brinjal paint. The custom bed’s headboard, beneath an artwork by Stan Brodsky, is upholstered in a Romo print, and the throw pillow is in a Dedar fabric.

4

Haute Tension

Stephan Julliard

If your interior aesthetic swings contemporary but the architecture is antique, it’s always advisable to preserve some original elements to then mix with modern furniture pieces. In the Paris apartment of Hugo Toro, the stained-glass window in the bedroom is original to the apartment. The chair is by Timothée Musset, and the curtains are from Silva Paris. The carpet and the leather bed frame are custom.

5

Repurposed-Door Headboard

Frank Frances Studio

A headboard doesn’t need to be upholstered, tufted— or a headboard at all, for that matter. In a Brooklyn brownstone designed by Ishka Designs, carved wooden doors from Morocco make a perfect decorative headboard. The pouf is from CB2, the pendant light by Workstead. The carpet is from Nourison, and the curtains are from the Shade Store.

6

Better Together

Peter Murdock

Where is it written that two beds need two discrete headboards? Answer: nowhere worth mentioning. After seeing this custom bed arrangement in a Long Island house by Joe Nahem, consider the argument Q.E.D. The table is by ModShop, and the lamp is from Allied Maker. The artwork is by Jessi Reaves.

7

Hitting the Tube Lights

Read Mckendree, from Workshop/APD Homes: Architecture, Interiors, and the Spaces Between, Rizzoli New York, 2022.

Bedside lamps can be nice, but they take up room on the nightstand. In a Workshop/APD project in Manhattan, these Orion tube lights by Lee Broom from the Future Perfect provide an exceedingly chic solution. The headboard was upholstered in a Pierre Frey fabric, and the curtains are by Cowtan & Tout. Underfoot is a custom Medina rug by Eskayel.

8

Lower the Pendant

Francesco Dolfo

In Milan, anything goes. Case in point: Designer Paolo Castellarin installed a Flos pendant to hover next to the pillows. Some might have an issue with this, but stylishly irreverent is something we should all aspire to be. The Vico Magistretti bed from Flou is topped with Loro Piana throws and Fornasetti pillows. The wall paint is RAL Pale Brown, and the window paint is RAL Green Beige.

9

Maximum Botanicals

Shade Degges

There’s botanical wallpaper, and then there’s botanical wallpaper. This example from Lizzo in a Malibu home designed by Martha Mulholland is an impressionistic visual feast that will keep you close to nature, even if the view from your bedroom window is of a brick wall. The vintage pendants by Bruno Chiarini for Stilnovo hang down on either side.

10

Mixed, Not Matched

Marni Epstein-Mervis

The throw has nothing to do with throw pillows, which have nothing to do with the headboard. And yet, everything fits together perfectly. It’s sprezzatura for the bedroom in an Oakland, California, house by Duett Interiors, and it’s oh-so-appealing.

11

Timber Trifecta

Stephan Julliard

Rattan and pine and mahogany! Oh my! Who says brown is dead? Jacques Grange proves that tired conceit wrong with this calmly sophisticated bedroom in a Comporta, Portugal, house. A pendant from Loja de Cá hangs from a soaring pine ceiling. The rattan screen and floor lamp are both from Paris flea markets; the vintage Mozambique mahogany cabinet is from Santa Maria Velharias. The artwork is by Ophélie Asch.

12

Blue Is the Warmest Color

Isabel Parra

Very few colors can bring both a feeling of joy and moodiness to a bedroom like this shade of blue from Farrow & Ball used by Perifio in a house in Hudson Valley. The throw on the Lulu and Georgia bed is from Missoni Home, the Verner Panton chair is vintage, the side tables are from &Tradition, and the sconces are from Lighting NYC. The walls are in Inchyra Blue from Farrow & Ball.

13

Infinite Headboard

Stephen Kent Johnson

Where does a headboard stop and a room begin? That’s not easy to answer. Ashe Leandro provides a new twist in an Upper East Side apartment with one that wraps around the periphery of the room. The custom nightstand is by Rob Pluhowski, the sconce is from Lites on West, the bed linens are by Matteo, and the throw is from Area Home.

14

A Hint of Yellow

silvia foz

What’s that peering through from behind the creamy bedding? It’s all our eyes can see. Is it...? Why, yes. That’s a dollop of mustard in a New York City bedroom by Carly Cushnie, as strong in appearance as Colman’s is to taste. A collage of vintage saris adds another splash of yellow above the bed.

15

One Big Dark Room

Nick Glimenakis

Don’t underestimate the calming qualities of an all-black room. Delia Kenza went for it here in the main bedroom of a Brooklyn townhouse. Verdict? Worth the risk!

16

Frey All Day

Joanna Maclennan

Every house should include some Pierre Frey fabrics. They’re chic, they’re classic, and they’re extremely well made. Patrick Frey, of Pierre Frey, just went all out in his use of the family product in his house in the south of France. The bedcover, canopy, and pillows are all in Pierre Frey fabrics. The rattan trunk is vintage, and the rug is by—you guessed it—Pierre Frey.

17

Statement Bed

Douglas Friedman

A stunning lacquer-and–silver leaf four-poster bed makes a statement in this Palm Beach house. An Art Deco floor lamp is paired with a tufted window seat. The art is by David Hockney.

18

Bright Blue Accents

William Waldron

Two iridescent glass pendants flank a blue artwork by Caroline Sardi. The Nicole Fuller Collection side table sits next to a low-profile platform bed by Poliform. Rich velvet curtains match the cobalt hue in the rug from the Rug Company in this townhouse in New York City’s Greenwich Village.

19

Wood-Beam Bedroom

James Merrell

An iron four-poster bed sits on top of an antique parquet floor in this Jacques Grange–designed apartment. The wood-beam ceiling is an original and striking detail. Custom bronze mirrors face the bed, and a 1950s floor lamps adds a pop of color.

20

Modernist Details

Roger Casas

Concrete walls are softened with flowing blue window treatments in this Marina Del Rey, California, house. Wood furniture adds warmth, and the tufts of the bedspread align with the tie holes in the concrete wall behind the bed.

21

Rich, Colorful Accessories

Trevor Tondro Photography

This Montecito, California, bedroom by Kim Alexandriuk is gorgeously filled with gray textiles and accessorized with pops of rich color. Blue table lamps by Ryan Mennealy flank a bed covered in a George Spencer Designs velvet. A midcentury aluminum bench covered in a green jacquard by Lauren Hwang is placed at the foot of the bed, and the subtle and glamorous rug is by Jorge Pardo for Christopher Farr. A pendant by Philippe Anthonioz makes a statement in the center of the room.

22

Modern Glamour

Gianni Franchellucci

Shades of gray create a chic palette in this London apartment. A custom lamp with a charcoal shade by Liz Marsh Designs sits on top of a nightstand by Oliver Bonas. A large black-and-white photograph hangs above the cream-upholstered bed.

23

Minimalist Decor

Erik Undéhn

Stark white walls are a crisp canvas for furniture and accessories in this modernist bedroom. A black Volante occasional table by Pierre Guariche is paired with a Pivotant wall light by Charlotte Perriand. A painting by Hans Hedenström hangs above a low wood headboard.

24

Warm Tones

Brittany Ambridge

A blue-and-orange color scheme adds richness to this New York City bedroom by designer Danielle Colding. An upholstered bed is topped with blue velvet throw pillows, and a pendant hanging above a cobalt side table makes for an unexpected bedside lamp.

25

Oxblood Accents

Eric Piasecki

Walls covered in a Holland & Sherry fabric create a creamy canvas in this New York City bedroom. An oxblood wallcovering from Castel is a dramatic break in the wall. The custom bed by interior designer Gideon Mendelson is flanked by two open-shelf nightstands.

26

Dburo_Riman_Krasavina

This was already the 11th home of the owners, however, the first where they decided to invite designers to create an atmosphere at home. Everything that they wanted to realize themselves, they already did in previous houses and apartments. An adult, accomplished couple who raised children, knowing each other's habits and tastes to the smallest detail, and at the same time, open to new things, they took a common part in discussing the concept, choosing shades and moods with interest and enthusiasm. We maximized the space with delicate, light shades of cinnamon, ginger and milky flowers, playing with textures, adjacent shades, emphasizing the pattern of wallpaper on the ceiling, designer light, almost luminous tiles of the kitchen backsplash. In the hallway, mirrors were used to the maximum for reflected light, as this is the darkest corner of the apartment. nine0007
