How well does Johnny Depp speak French? – Declan Software

Johnny Depp does speak French. But not fluently. While his accent is great, he is clearly not confident speaking French in public. His fluency is seriously constrained by a lack of a broad working vocabulary hence his nervous halting manner.
Johnny Depp and French actress Vanessa ParadisHowever there is no doubting that Depp adopted an excellent strategy for learning French – as the French themselves say: “La meilleure façon d’apprendre une langue étrangère est sur l’oreiller.” (‘The best way to learn a foreign language is on a pillow’). When Depp was 35, he started dating the French actress Vanessa Paradis. The relationship lasted 14 years, during which time they had two children – Jack and Lily-Rose. Both children are reportedly bilingual in French and English.
Despite the extended period of exposure to French, we most definitely can’t say that Johnny Depp is fluent. It is however interesting that he has a very good accent. This contrasts with his small French vocabulary which severely constrains his fluency. This is a classic sign of an adult who has been immersed in a foreign language but has not made an effort to actually learn it. Unlike children, most adults do not organically accumulate vocabulary purely through exposure, and must make a concerted effort to expand their working vocabulary.
It also should be mentioned that at 35 years of age – the age Depp started dating Vanessa Paradiss – the returns to immersion have waned considerably.
Depp’s good accent but limited fluency contrasts with Bradley Cooper who has a great vocabulary but just an OK accent. He studied French academically and only profited from a six-month stint with a French host family in Aix-en-Provence to acquire a French accent. And of course in terms of accent Johnny Depp also benefits from being musically inclined which most definitely helps in acquiring a foreign language accent.
This clip of a good example of his excellent accent but limited fluency – though the French crowd obviously greatly appreciate his efforts.

Take a look around Johnny Depp's sleepy French village estate
The South of France is all the rage just now. The Cannes Film Festival is in full, star-spangled flow; La Colombe d’Or is the place to be; and Alain Delon’s Riviera-chic wardrobe is the seasonal staple every gentleman should be aspiring to at this very moment.
And if you’ve got a spare (approximate) $55.5 million, there’s a certain Provençal property that may just make that South of France lifestyle not merely a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but a breathtakingly luxurious way of life.
If we told you the estate originally took the form of a village, located in Le Plan De La Tour (just a few short miles from Saint-Tropez), would that ring any bells? How about if we drop Johnny Depp’s name into it? Presumably, the mist is now clearing: the A-list actor’s village estate first went on the market back in 2016, and was never sold. Now, it’s back on: all charming, rural, bountifully luxurious 37 acres of it.
Of course, it wouldn’t be Depp’s property if it didn’t stray from the bounds of ‘normal’. What is ‘normal’, you ask? Well, presumably a typical estate — even a 37 acre estate — wouldn’t feature a skate park (that’s right, a skate park) and a heavily decorated wine cave space irresistibly reminiscent of — and apparently inspired by — a lair from Pirates of the Caribbean.
If the skate park didn’t grab your interest, allow us to share some privileged insights into the renovation process. For a start, Depp’s creativity is by no means limited to the big screen. We frankly don’t want to know how much he spent on buying and renovating the 19th-century village into his own private estate (although the — unsurprising — word on the street is that millions’ worth of dollars were involved), but the end result clocks in at 15 bedrooms (including six guest homes, one of which is in what used to be the village church) and 14 bathrooms.
If al fresco dining is your preferred summer culinary state, then you’ll want to avail yourself of the renovated town square: the village estate’s foremost outdoor dining space. There’s indoor dining, too; the estate features its own bistro (well, actually it’s a private dining space decorated exactly like an actual bistro — perfect for those who want a hospitality experience without having to fling on a face mask every time they wish to use the bathroom), which Depp named Chez Marceline. And we’ve yet to mention the two swimming pools (would it be a village estate if there was only one pool?), the gym, the art studio and the covered wagon with full bath and kitchen (we can’t make head or tail of that last one, either; but that’s Depp for you).
With structures mostly designed by Depp himself, the estate is an unparalleled insight into the mind of one of the most famous actors of his generation. It’s quirky, it’s unprecedented, and it keeps you guessing — just like the actor in question. It’s also rife with luxury at every turn: and if a quintessential, 19th-century paradise could be encapsulated into 37 acres, we have a feeling this would be it.
Staying put in London this summer? Why not make Canary Wharf your sun soaked city haven…

But if he were skilled in the Russian language, then, of course, he would add to that that it was decent for them to speak with all of them, for he would find in it the splendor of Gishpan, the liveliness of French, the strength of German, the tenderness of Italian, moreover, richness and strength in images brevity of Greek and Latin.“

“When we talk about God, we use words, but these are only metaphorical or borrowed terms that we need to understand what we need to understand about God. Our vocabulary contains only words suitable for ordinary concepts bound by the limitations of created things, and we cannot say anything at all without these words. But all who seek God and talk about him must clearly understand that any descriptions or words used in relation to God cannot truly describe him. They can only be used as borrowed, indirect terms. You have to be very careful in this regard.”

“I love the Russian language. This is the most beautiful language ever! He needs to be loved. And moreover, it is necessary to study and not say "call" instead of "call", and various other words when people put the stress at random. It's funny, it's strange, and this is what television is now sinning. Sometimes I can’t listen to the way the announcers say, or in advertising - it’s a complete disaster. People don't understand this. They think - what's the difference? But no, it will backfire later. The language must be loved. I believe that this is one of the main pillars of the artist.“
