Indoor Lighting for Stairwell

Commercial and industrial buildings of all types, shapes and sizes have stairways to allow for employees and customers to traverse to different levels as well as enter and exit buildings. Stairways and the surrounding areas are critical for everyday operations and usually have significant foot traffic. Because they are also inherently more prone to accidents than other areas of a building, visibility is essential. Whether they be indoor or outdoor, stairway lighting has always been an important part of facility design.

Thankfully, lighting technology has improved massively over the past decade, with significant advancements in performance, cost reduction and reliability. At Commercial LED Lights, we are proud to provide state-of-the-art stairway lighting solutions for all types of applications, whether they be indoor or outdoor areas. These lights ensure the safety and security of users, and save owners a significant amount operating costs while providing superior performance.

Indoor Stair Lighting Fixture Types

Interior stairways such as those found within commercial office buildings are usually quite flexible regarding the type of fixture that can be used. There are several common fixture types used in these applications, which are often used in conjunction with each other in different areas of a stairwell for the most effective lighting configuration possible. Below are the three most common fixture types used in indoor stairwell lighting applications:

Stairwell Fixtures Specifically designed for stairwell applications, stairwell fixtures are intended to mount in vertical surfaces such as walls along the side of stairwells, around turns or other important areas. They project a beam of light downwards, which is activated by motion sensors which feature an adjustable detection range with a time delay.

Suspended / Strip Lighting Fixtures Designed as an all purpose fixture, these lights are ideal for overhead lighting of stairwells, particularly over areas with bends and turns where lighting above is important. These fixtures are durable, cost effective and energy efficient, making them one of the most common fixtures used for stairway applications.

Vapor Tight Fixtures Designed specifically for areas where moisture and humidity concerns exist, these fixtures are commonly used in interior stairwell applications that lead into outdoor areas or entryways. They have a sealed housing that prevents the ingress of moisture, dirt and dust to ensure continued reliable operation of these fixtures over the long term.

Why Use LEDs?

There are a multitude of reasons why using LEDs for stairway lighting is the best choice, namely improvements in both energy efficiency and also improved visibility and lighting quality. Additionally, the LED bulbs and fixtures have a much longer usable lifespan, meaning less down time for stairways, staircases and stairwell areas. This is especially important for faculties with a limited number of staircases, or areas where there is high traffic and significant costs associated with delays caused by downtime.

As mentioned previously, visibility is one of the top priorities for stairway applications, as most trip and fall accidents are a result of poor visibility causing an individual to lose their footing or misjudge a steps location. Contrary to popular belief, visibility isn’t entirely reliant strictly on lumen output. Having a high lighting accuracy is also important, which is measured using the Color Rendering Index (CRI). LED lights have the highest CRI ratings in the lighting industry, resulting in less eye strain and easier color recognition and therefore improved visibility.

On top of improved visibility and longer lifespans, LEDs also are significantly more energy efficient than their traditional counterparts. In fact, when upgrading to LED technology, users often find they save up to 70% more in energy costs when compared to their old lighting setups. This energy savings is very important for commercial and industrial applications where lights are often on for extended periods of time, often 24/7. The savings in electricity costs alone usually covers the costs of an upgrade within the first year of operation.

10 Staircase Lighting and Lighting Ideas for Modern Interiors

October 30, 2019

Maxim Kuznetsov

We have already discussed stair lighting more than once, but each time we focused on one staircase, its design, material, style, etc. Staircase lighting was lost on way, so we decided this time to focus only on the light. Here are some examples of staircase lighting for modern interiors.

One option is to build a few lights into the wall next to the stairs. Depending on the size of your stairs, 3 or 4 lights are enough. In this case, the square or rectangular shape of the fixtures matches the design of the stairs and blends seamlessly into the entire interior. nine0007

This is a similar example, but in this case the glow is in 2 directions - up and down. But, of course, the design of the stairs is also not the same. The stairs are made of wood and have a more durable feel, so the fixtures were sized to match the stairs.

This is another type of staircase lighting. Integrator Aura IT-702 luminaires can be mounted on the wall, they have a design that splits the light into 2 parts and passes it from two open parts, there is also a glow around the luminaire that is somewhat reminiscent of a halo. They are round and chic, also match the whole sleek stair design. nine0003

This is a staircase with similar fixtures. This time it is Aura IT-007 round lamps. These lamps have only one direction of light - down. They are like a tiny sun illuminating the stairs. Although they may seem small in appearance, they provide sufficient illumination at night.

In this case, the lights used are similar to those presented earlier in the sense that they are small but strong. However, here they were installed directly in the staircase itself. Each step has one small light source on the surface and another below it so that the image they create is symmetrical and similar when viewed from above or below. nine0003

Another option for stair lighting is to integrate luminaires into the stairs. This is an option that saves a little space, but more importantly, it's practical and stylish. This is what most modern homes choose and goes well with minimalist interiors.

This is another example of a ladder with LED lighting. This is an energy efficient strategy that also enhances the design. Here the lamps themselves are small, they are installed at every second step. They match the lights from the ceiling and create a stylish and uniform look. nine0003

There is also a fourth type of staircase lighting that we would like to show you. These stairs are lit from below. The light is blurry and thin and is only visible in the small part that separates the stairs from the adjacent wall.

This is a similar system but with stronger illumination. In this case, a strong contrast is created between the bright light and the dark part of the stairs. The light emitted is bright, but also subtle and warm, with a yellow tint that matches the walls and the general interior of this area. nine0003

A similar system can be used to illuminate stairs from the inside. Here the staircase has a translucent part, and the light coming from behind penetrates through the steps and thus illuminates each step of the staircase. The effect is radiant and chic, and the light is subtle yet strong enough. Also, the effect is slightly different with each step.

Lanterns for illuminating stairs and other solutions

Stair lighting ideas for your inspiration. When considering stair lighting, the design of the stair, its construction and the desired effects are key elements as well as the finish and texture. Stairs are the centerpiece of your home, connecting spaces. It should be functional and sculptural, and the lighting of the stairs makes a real difference.

In most cases, stair lighting is not just a decorative theme, it also plays a very important role in terms of safety. Glare should be avoided and stair lights should be serviced frequently, while indoor lighting to enhance the shape can add beauty and softness. nine0003

1. The first thing to consider when illuminating stairs is to add wall recessed fixtures such as Integrator or other appropriate fixtures. This can create a real wow factor, whether it's a stone staircase or a more classic runner staircase. At what height to install the lights for the stairs, it's up to you, it all depends on the required lighting.

2. Here you can see the square, single-glow down Integrator Uno IT-001 luminaire placed at each step to blur the light down the stairs. Here they are placed closer to the steps for greater effect. You don't have to put them side by side! nine0003

3. A great effect in a large space is to create a niche or a series of niches instead of a wall lamp. Integrator Oreol IT-711 luminaires are perfect for this. They have a glow along the contour and a direct glow on the staircase itself. Combine them with steps for the perfect layered lighting scheme for your staircase.

4. For more modern stairs, consider using the Integrator IT-724 tread light. It creates a stronger architectural feature. The bottom of the stairs are often dark forgotten places.
