Idea for decorating the garden - do-it-yourself lawn decoration

Why decorate the lawn?

A beautifully trimmed bright green lawn can be the main element of the landscaping of a country house. Although the lawn has an attractive appearance, a few years after planting, an empty green surface can become boring to you. In order to return mystery and creativity to the dacha without any special cash costs, it is recommended to decorate the lawn using the most original ideas for decorating the garden! nine0005

Garden lawn decoration

Additional lawn decoration does not require a lot of time and money, besides, a slight modification of the site will practically not bring harm to the grass itself.

Now we're going to look at the most original lawn design ideas!

Ways to decorate the lawn

Today, the following ways to decorate the lawn with your own hands are popular:

  • Use of Painted Barrels

  • Lawn decoration with colorful trees and shrubs

  • Use of hanging baskets on tree branches

  • Lawn decoration with flowerbeds and mixborders

  • Use of small architectural forms and garden sculpture

In order for you to imagine the merits of each of the methods, let's briefly consider their essence and photo examples.

Painted barrels

Painted barrels have appeared in landscape design quite recently and won sympathy among summer residents in a short period of time. All you need is to find some metal 200-liter barrels, paint them to your liking and set them on the lawn. nine0005

To your attention a photo of painted barrels:

Bright trees and shrubs

The second idea for decorating the lawn is planting bright flowering trees and shrubs around the perimeter of the site. Choose plants that have a golden, crimson, purple and scarlet color. Together with trees, it’s a good idea to plant even undersized flowers that have a contrasting shade.

Among the most beautiful trees that will be combined with lawn grass, there are sucker, sea buckthorn and silver willow. Next to the trees, blue forget-me-nots will be beautifully combined.

Hanging flower baskets

Another rather creative lawn decoration idea is to plant a tree in the center of the green area. When the tree grows up, you need to decorate it with hanging baskets of flowers, simply by hanging the plants on the branches. This idea looks very good, but it will take several years to wait. nine0005

Flowerbeds and mixborders

As in the first case with trees, bright flowerbeds and mixborders are arranged along the contour of the lawn. You can see how these flower beds look by clicking on the appropriate links.

Small architectural forms

Well, the last idea for decorating lawn grass is to place small architectural forms throughout the area. In Europe, garden gnomes have long been a traditional lawn decoration. Such sculptures are not difficult to make with your own hands, in addition, there is a wide range of finished products on the market. nine0005

Lawn design: design and decoration of a lawn at a summer cottage, landscape design photo

A lawn is not necessarily a classic stalls or a football field.

But also space for decorative experiments

What do you know about lawn design? Most often, the lawn is a platform of dense, evenly cut grass (whether it is parterre, park or sports) or the variegation of the Moorish mixture of grasses and flowers that has returned to fashion. The planes of a well-groomed lawn act as a backdrop for planting and large patches of greenery balance the composition. But lawn decorative possibilities are actually much wider - it can become the basis for unusual and individual landscape solutions. Today we will talk about the design of the lawn at their summer cottage. nine0005

Use our ideas to renovate an existing lawn, or create a variety of new solutions based on them. You can implement many of them with your own hands right now - without waiting for the time to sow a new lawn!

SYNLawn of Central California, Inc.

Shall we play?
The lawn regulates the microclimate in the garden: it affects the temperature (usually in this area it is a couple of degrees lower) and the level of humidity. Thanks to its elastic and soft surface, it becomes an excellent basis for a recreation area, children's games and sports activities. nine0005

Tip: A properly shaped, well maintained lawn can take on significant maintenance loads. For playing areas on grass, it is better to sow resistant sports mixtures - as a rule, they contain a large percentage of seeds of meadow bluegrass (lat. Poa praténsis ) and red fescue (lat. Festuca rubra ), which are characterized by intensive development of the root system and form a dense sod. They are well complemented by seeds of fast growing perennial ryegrass (lat. Lolium perenne ) and reed fescue (lat. Festuca arundinacea ).

Short and long
Create lawn patterns by adjusting the cutting height. Combine short cut areas (traditional 4-5 cm) and areas of taller grass. In this way it is convenient to cut wide or narrow stripes and shapes. Combining stripes of different widths, you can get a complex rhythmic pattern and geometric compositions. For example, such a design of a lawn in a summer cottage, the photo of which you see above, will make your garden much more interesting. nine0005

Tip: Use this technique for established lawns with dense sods. The regrowth of the grass prevents it from bushing and will not allow the young lawn to thicken.

Kettelkamp & Kettelkamp

With due diligence and care, you can decorate your yard with rings and spirals.

Idea: Create grass paths in places that are not very passable. For these areas, use sports turf compounds that are highly resistant to trampling. nine0005

Stone patterns
Great for creating patterns and ornaments on natural or artificial turf. Even complex patterns can be laid out from small cobblestones or pebbles - thin and curved lines and detailed ornaments. Place such an ornament in the center of the lawn, around trees, or lay out a curb of stones along the path. Try to deepen, sink the cobblestones into the turf to fix them. nine0005

Beautifully curved walking paths and narrow connecting paths can also be used as a decorative stone pattern on the lawn.

Hollander Design

Idea: In this way, you can lay out a real labyrinth, which will be great fun for both children and adults. The drawing of the labyrinth can be taken from historical sources: they were popular both in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance. Or come up with your own form: it does not have to be too complicated. nine0005

Chess order
Another entertainment for a country holiday will be playing chess and checkers. It will be interesting for all ages: the older generation will enjoy the leisurely game, and the children will be happy to move the pieces.

Turn your lawn into a chess board. This is easy to do with paving slabs. Alternate tiles with turf cells. If you are making a field from scratch, it is convenient to use a rolled lawn for this, cutting it into squares of the desired size. nine0005

Tip: To create a chess field, it is better to use a sports lawn again.

Marking the field
Use twine between the pegs. First, mark the general dimensions of the field on the ground and drive in pegs at its corners. Consider the size of the tiles you will be using. Divide the sides into the desired number of segments: for a checkerboard - 8 on each side. You can also use tiles for this. Mark them with pegs. Now stretch the twine between the pegs of opposite sides. This will give you a layout grid for your field that is easy to lay tiles on. nine0005

Among other things, this pattern is a wonderful decoration of the lawn. In free time, the chess field looks decorative even without pieces. And the original chess pieces will act as a sculptural decor in your garden and help emphasize its style.

Richard Lusk Landscape and Design

Idea: In addition to the regular chess field, other compositions can be created in this way, alternating grass patches with paving slabs or natural stone.

www.KarlGercens.com

Idea: This technique can be used to design the transition from the playground to the lawn. It is especially effective if you use a natural stone of natural forms or a gradual decrease in the size of the tiles, as in the photo.

David Morello Garden Enterprises, Inc.

Mound Patterns
Another easy-to-implement way to create ornamental lawn-based designs is to use mulch and stone chips. This method is suitable for creating even quite elegant ornaments and smooth curved shapes. For marking the latter, it is convenient to use a garden hose. nine0005

However, for ease of care, you should not get carried away with excessively thin lines: think about how you will cut the grass around.

Idea: Using different types of mulch (bark, wood chips, pine nut husks, etc.) or multi-colored stone chips, you can create colorful compositions.

Imagine Landscapes

Flower Ribbons
Flowers are the most traditional and equally beautiful way to decorate your lawn.

  • Regular garden

Place a flower bed or flower bed in the center of the lawn - along the edge. Rabatka is a long rectangular flower garden, usually with a complex geometric pattern. The most common place for her is along a path or fence. A double-sided symmetrical rabatka can also be placed in the center of an elongated lawn - in a garden built on geometry and straight lines.

  • For landscape style

If your garden is far from a strict regular composition, it is better to go in a more original way and place fancifully curved flowering ribbons on the green plane of the lawn. They can serve not only as a decoration, but also as a visual separation of the various areas of the site. Often they, along with discounts, are placed along paths and fences, but being freely located on the lawn, they will become a real decoration of it. The lawn design in front of the house, the photo of which you see above, shows how great such a tape can look along a walking path. nine0005

High Res Studio/ SeamonWhiteside+

We recommend planting flowering perennials or seedlings of annuals to create ribbons. However, they do not have to be blooming at all. Use ornamental plants - both annuals and perennials. Create single-color mono-variety ribbons: they will work well in a monochrome garden or help bring out complementary color in garden decor. Or combine different flowers and types of plants, getting multi-colored ornaments. nine0005

Tip: Ornamental plants are good for edging a flower garden.

Ribbons do not have to be green on green Play on the difference in textures and nuances of green shades. Form ribbons from plantings of ground cover plants: creeping tenacious (lat. Ajúga réptans ), Iberis (lat. Iberis ), soddy armeria (lat. Armeria juniperifolia ), saxifrage (lat. Saxifrága ), acenes (lat. Acaena sedum9) ), etc.

During flowering, they will delight you with delicate flowers, and the rest of the time - textured turf or foliage protruding above the smooth surface of the lawn and creating an unobtrusive textured pattern. For green monochrome ribbons - especially in wet and shady places - you can also plant hostas (lat. hosta ) and aquilegia (lat. aquilégia ).

Tip: Use the combination of textures not only for ribbons, but also to create large ornaments with alternating grass planes and ground cover plants.

A classic and very expressive method of garden art is the use of topiary haircuts to create complex ornamental patterns. In Europe, boxwood is traditionally used for this (lat. Búxus ), which has small foliage and is easy to cut. For the northern regions of Russia, when creating topiary forms, it is better to use a more stable cotoneaster (lat. Cotoneáster ).

Tip: You don't have to create the intricate pattern shown in the photo. A low-cut shrub, even of a simple shape, will become a spectacular decoration of the lawn. nine0005

PAN Landscape

Low-growing shrubs that form a continuous low curtain are also suitable for creating ribbons on the lawn: dwarf varieties of spirea (lat. Maulei ) or creeping species.

However, topiary forms are suitable not only for a regular garden, especially in the composition of dynamic curved ribbons of different textures and compositions, or when creating complex asymmetric shapes, as in the photo. nine0005

lawns, but you can also create them from the lawn. Figured areas of fresh greenery of bizarre shapes look very expressive among the bulk and concrete areas. They can be small and group together. nine0005

Tip: This technique works well for decorating tree trunks, especially in small areas.

Small but bold: choosing plants for a small garden sculpture and decorative items. It can be figurative or abstract. Use patterned stones or large driftwood. The advantage of this method is that you do not have to violate the integrity of the existing lawn, and if you wish, the composition can be easily changed. nine0005

GreenPal Lawn Care

Regularity is the key to success
Lawn care is not that hard, but it does require regularity.

  • Mowing and watering

The lawn needs weekly mowing and watering with a sprayer after it. The first mowing is carried out when the grass reaches a height of 8-10 cm (do not miss the moment!). It is especially important to observe the regularity of mowing in the first half of summer - this will allow the grass to form a developed root system and create a dense turf. Grass loves water, but not its stagnation. Water the lawn abundantly (10-12 liters per square meter), but avoid flooding and stagnant water. nine0005

  • Top dressing

Dissolved mineral fertilizers are used to top dress the lawn. After the snow melts and at the beginning of the season, nitrogen fertilizers are applied: they stimulate the growth of greenery. In the middle of summer, the lawn is fed with a complex composition containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, and by the fall, phosphorus-potassium top dressing is produced, which stimulates the growth of the root mass and allows the lawn to winter favorably.

  • Aeration

Also an important element of care is aeration - combing the lawn and piercing the turf.
