Room Design in a Box
Affordable room design... One room at a time!!!
Imagine being able to work with a high-end interior designer from the comfort of your own home, even though he or she is miles away… Now imagine having this Designer help you plan those spaces in your home that need help, for far less than you would ever pay to hire a full-service Interior Designer in your area. You have just imagined the reality of Room Design in a Box.
My name is Michelle and RoomDesignInABox.com is one of the first, if not the first e-design company ever created. I dreamt of making high-end interior design services, which were once just for the wealthy, available to the everyday homeowner and apartment renter.
Back in 2006 I had a client who traveled often and wanted to personalize her homes while she was there. Each time I asked her for photos and measurements and I delivered a complete design for her, including a shopping list of where to find the items she’d need to create the look- all close to her location or online. Just that easily, room design in a box was born.
Together with a team of designers all across United States, we help you completely design your home for less, one room at a time.

Our client's love
I had a room in my house which I used as an office, and also envisioned it as a future place for our granddaughter to stay when visiting. After a search online I found Michelle’s service – Room In a Box.
While I knew I could find a cheaper service online, I also knew this was a long-term investment for our home, and one generally gets what they pay for.
I could not be more happy with the results! I described how I envisioned using the space, specified what I wanted and didn’t want, told Michelle what colors I liked and didn’t like, and also let her know what color my adjoining rooms were because I wanted everything to flow. I also gave her a budget which for the room was probably conservative – moderate.
The results blew me away. I have a space that I love being in. I can read online in the morning with my coffee looking out the window. I can sip a glass of wine on the sofa which converts to a bed watching TV if my husband chooses to watch something else in our living room. Our young granddaughter and I have enjoyed giggle time and visits in our “girl room“. The space and colors work perfectly with the rest of our home. And I simply love being in that space now.
I absolutely would recommend and use the service again… Worth every penny.

I first used Room Design In A Box in 2008 for my teenage daughter's room.Working with the service was so fun and easy. My daughter even got to be involved, providing pinterest boards of things she liked. She felt so included and we both LOVED the results.
My little girl is all grown up and moved out now, so I was excited when I went back online and found Room Design In A Box was still going strong and decided it was time to convert her room into my sewing/ tv room. The results of what she designed were better than I ever could have imagined. The plan was easy to follow and the art and decor make my work space into a sanctuary I never want to leave. I can't wait to do my living room next. Thank you Michelle!

We used Room Design in a Box to design several rooms in our home. My husband gave me a gift of using another Edesign service he found before finding this one, that gave us 3 designs to choose from for less money and now I see why. You get what you pay for sometimes and I hated every design that other company provided. I doubt they were even designers!
Roomdesigninabox.com was so easy to use and understand and the design boards were so pretty and just our style. My husband and I are very Tuscan/ traditional. My designer understood that and gave us designs based on our exact style and not some contemporary crap that we don't like, like the other 3 designs from the other site.
Our house looks cohesive and like we had a high end designer working in it for months, and it was all done online. Such a great service!

This service is so fantastic. I can't put two pieces of furniture together. I would have just gone to the store and picked the entire set up in a display and probably hated it all. Now I have a great print chair that coordinates with a couch I love. It's so comfortable and I would have never thought I could have something so modern and yet comfy in my home! My living room is stunning. I highly recommend Room Design In A Box!

I'm addicted to this service. They created such a warm, inviting space for me. My bedroom design was so inviting. I love opening my eyes to see it all every morning, from the plum wall color she picked, to the linens and the ottoman and the art!

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does my room design take?
Your room design takes UP to 14 business days to complete. Depending on your designer’s workload, it can sometimes be completed faster, but please allow us the full lead time to complete your design
Where do the furniture and decor come from?
Your designer will use your address to find sources local to you and/ or online stores that deliver to your address. If there is a particular store you want us to avoid, please detail that in your questionnaire.
What if I forget something in my questionnaire?
Once your design is assigned to a designer, they will contact you and you will have their email address to ensure you can reach them should you need to. If they have any questions about your information, they will ask them at that time.
Is the person completing my design an actual interior designer?
Yes! Unlike some of the other more well known companies who do this, your designer will be a real interior designer with years, if not decades under their belt. This site was started by an interior designer with twenty eight years in the business.
Can I use this service for my business or office design?
This service is for residential but certain exceptions can be made on a case by case basis. Please contact us at [email protected] to discuss your needs further.
Can I do a kitchen or bathroom design?
Kitchens and bathrooms require VERY crucial measurements, as well as exploration of plumbing and electrical locations in order to place fixtures and cabinetry within the room. Because of this, we do not typically do Room Design In A Box’s for these rooms. However, with contractor verified measurements, we have worked with several clients outside of this platform on their kitchen and bath designs. Please contact us at [email protected].
What if I have trouble understanding something in my notes?
Once you receive your design, should anything feel unclear to you, you can simply email your designer, who you have been in contact with and they will be happy to provide clarity.
Can I use this service on more than one room of my home?
Absolutely! Got more rooms you want to tackle? Lay it on us, we’ve got you covered! Some happy clients use us for their entire home, one room at a time.
What if I am planning a remodel that will require a contractor, not just cosmetics or furniture?
The owner of our company, Michelle Ortiz, has a full service interior design firm, located in NY, and works with clients all over the country. She can come to you or work remotely. Please contact us at [email protected] to be further directed.
What if I am unhappy with my design?
SHUTTER THE THOUGHT! You can’t please everyone, right? BUT YOU CAN DO ALL THAT YOU CAN TO TRY! We can honestly tell you that we have been doing this since 2007 and have never had a client tell us they hate their design. We pride ourselves on getting to know our client’s needs. Thru the combination of information on your questionnaire, communication with you and the pics and measurements you present, we really do a great job bringing your look to life. Most of us have been doing this for our own clients for year, if not decades. Our ultimate goal is to make you happy, design a great space and get a referral from you to another person we can design for. Should any aspect of your design make you unhappy, we will reselect up to three items in your design for you at no additional charge.
Please take a second to read our Refund Policy
We begin work on your project upon receipt of your payment to us. Because of this, there is NO REFUND once payment is received by us. Designing your room takes many hours of research, planning, drawing and creative work that cannot be taken back once started. Please be considerate of this process, as sending us payment acts as your acknowledgement of this policy. Providing an invalid email address or not completing your questionnaire are not considered reasons for refund. Our greatest advertising is our happy clients, so we hope this begins an amazing relationship!
Any other questions, please contact us at [email protected]. We will get back to you as quickly as possible with your answer.

4 easy steps
Step 1
Take measurements of your room. Measure each wall from one end to the other. Take a piece of paper and draw an outline of the walls of your room- usually just a square, and label each wall's measurement. If there are windows and doors along your wall, do your best to measure how wide and tall they are and how far away they are to the closest corner of the room.
Step 2
Take a picture of your room from the doorway facing in, so you get the majority of the room. Then take one picture of each wall of the room. At the least, you should be sending us five pictures of the room. You can send us more if you'd like, to point out a particular feature or area to address within the space.
Step 3
Answer the questionnaire and tell us about your dream room, to help us create your perfect space. The answers will give your designer the guideline to work from.
Step 4
Pay for your design on the Pay For Services page, and in under two weeks you'll be working on creating your dream room design created by a professional. It's just that simple!
Room model out of the box: master class
Hello, dear friends! And we have a master class! Today we will make a room layout out of the box. Let's make a dream room.
In general, my daughter Alexandra, she is in the 6th grade, received such an unusual task at the technology lesson. But our room turned out so cool that it’s worth making it just like that, for fun. And then it is quite possible to play with it, for example, to settle some pretty baby in it.
And the work is creative, pleasant, interesting.
The main element of the room is a shoebox in which we cut a door that can be opened and closed.
And also cut out two windows. Used a utility knife for this. The base is ready.
Let's take care of the floors of our room. We have a carpet on the floor. They made it from two sheets of yellow and green corrugated cardboard.
Cut the cardboard into strips. nine0003
And then glued the strips to the bottom of the box with a glue stick.
And now the wallpaper. They took greenish paper.
And carefully glued it to the walls of our box room.
Frames were made of white paper near the windows. Everything is like in people)
And we made the door yellow with curly green tabs. In general, the whole room will be in yellow and green colors.
The room is ready. We start making furniture and interior items. Let's start with the sofa. Let's take a pack of tea, colored paper, scissors and a lid from a box that has already turned into a room. nine0003
We glue the box with paper, and cut out the back and sides of the sofa from the lid.
We also glue the sides and back with colored paper and glue it to the sofa. Ready! You can sleep)
A floor lamp is provided as lighting in our cardboard room. Let's make it from a toilet paper roll.
The floor lamp will look like a lampshade on a leg, remember, these were very popular in the past. Cut out the bushing like this. A lampshade on top, a stand on the bottom, a leg between them. nine0003
Paint the lampshade from the inside with yellow paint, the stand with green paint.
Cover the outside of the lampshade with yellow corrugated cardboard, and the leg and stand with green.
This is what the floor lamp looks like from the back. Now it won't be dark)
Let's turn the vitamin box into a cupboard.
Just cover it with colored paper. Closet ready! Now there will be a place to put things.
Let's turn these matchboxes and a piece of cardboard into a desk. nine0003
We glue the boxes together, 4 pieces each. And cover them with colored paper.
We decorate the drawers, glue colored paper and half beads that act as handles on the drawers, you can make them from something else. We decorate a tabletop made of durable cardboard with colored paper.
Glue the top in place.
The chair is made according to the same principle. We take two matchboxes and a piece of thick cardboard. nine0003
We glue everything with colored paper and combine it into a single whole. Ready! Sit down)
Here it is all our designer yellow-green handmade furniture.
Let's try to arrange the furniture in its place. View from above.
View from the door.
View from windows.
And everything would be very good, but there are not enough decorative features. Let's do interior design. We have found such cute pictures with the cat Basik. What you need)
We cut out frames for our pictures from yellow corrugated cardboard.
Glue the big picture around the door.
We “hang” a couple of small pictures on the other wall. And we have another one located in the sofa area.
Textiles are next. We decided to put beautiful pillows on the sofa. How to make them? First, cut out square blanks from felt.
And then we sew them into pillows, fill them with cotton wool and glue the letters, also cut out of felt, on the front side. The letters add up to the name Sasha) We place the pillows on the sofa. And they also made a beautiful bedspread on the sofa out of felt.
