16 small bedroom design and layout tips

We like to think that small spaces are filled with outsized opportunities. Getting creative with how you use your space can help you create a small bedroom layout that looks and feels larger and more stylish. The 16 small bedroom ideas are broken into three parts:

Feel free to skip to the portion that interests you the most.

I. How To Arrange A Small Bedroom

Arranging a small bedroom has an impact on the look and feel of the room, regardless of what furniture you have to begin with. Below are some small bedroom space ideas to help when creating your next small bedroom layout:

Anchor your small bedroom layout

Start by putting your bed in the center of the most visible wall. (It’s usually the wall facing the doorway.) Putting your bed in the center will give your small bedroom layout symmetry so you can make the most of your space. You’ll have enough space to jump under the covers from both sides. Add in two nightstands if you can.

Designer hint: Framing the bed or not, lighter walls make rooms seem more spacious.

Remove a nightstand (or both)

If you don't have enough room on both sides of your bed, consider removing a bed-side table to add more space to your small bedroom design. This will allow you to move your bed closer to the wall on one side and you'll still have some room on both sides. If you need even more room, you can remove both bedside tables and use an overhead shelf for lighting. If you don't have room for a bedside table, you can put them in a small closet.

Dressers for small bedrooms

When you are trying to make the most of limited floor space, you can always take advantage of height to make extra room. This idea is also appealing if you don't have the closet space to hold extra furniture. For example, you can put your TV on top of a tall, narrow chest or you can remove the chest altogether and mount a flat-screen TV on the wall.

Place your rug carefully

Is your rug an afterthought? Shouldn’t be. It can help make a small room look bigger, add softness, and introduce colors or patterns that tie your small bedroom design together.  Follow your bed’s lead to understand what size rug you need. If the bed is centered, slip the rug about 2/3 of the way under. If it’s in a corner, put the rug next to it or under another piece of furniture. Learn more about choosing the right-sized rug.

Sketch your small bedroom layout

Now that you know the basics, grab a pencil and a piece of paper and sketch your ideas. Even easier, use our online room planner to organize your small bedroom design ideas without breaking a sweat. You’ll find it here.

II. Small primary bedroom design ideas

Small primary bedrooms can go from cramped to cozy with the right design ideas. As the most intimate room in your home, your bedroom should reflect your personality. When decorating your primary bedroom, design for style as well as comfort with the right accessories and spacing.

Use natural light to your advantage

Lighting your room can make it look and feel more spacious. While darker colors can feel cozy, they also absorb light. When choosing your paint color, sticking with lighter colors can help create a more spacious, airy feel. You can also take advantage of the light you have by setting up your small bedroom arrangement so that natural light has a clear path through the window. In areas where natural light doesn't shine well, you can use mirrors to reflect the available light and make the room look more spacious.

Draw attention upward

Making your room feel taller can also help create a feeling of spaciousness. To get this effect, you can paint your ceiling a more vibrant color, which helps to draw the eyes upward. Another way to make the room seem taller is to make sure to hang your window treatments close to the ceiling.

Don't forget decorative lighting and mirrors

A decorative mirror above the chest of drawers gives the feel of a vanity and opens up the room without the need for a large dresser. A chandelier or hanging light fixture will draw the eye up and create the illusion of more space.

Coordinate your colors

Matching tones are very helpful in tying a small primary bedroom together. Opt for light colors and cool tones to open up your small bedroom and create an airy, spacious feel.

Add art to your small bedroom design

Art is the icing on the cake for small bedroom décor. It will be one of the first things people see in your room and something you will see every day. Therefore, it is important to choose art that you love, and that speaks to your unique personality and interests.

III. Small bedroom organization and storage tips

A well-designed bedroom will make all the difference in helping create space. Give the illusion of a spacious bedroom with a few simple design tips. The following are some space-saving, room-opening ideas to help you achieve the look and feel of a sprawling bedroom:

Create extra storage with multi-purpose items

In order to organize a small bedroom setup, storage is key. Look for creative ways to do this by choosing furniture that can pull double duty as a storage solution. For example, storage beds can help create under-bed storage to stash out-of-season clothing.  You can even put a storage ottoman at the foot of the bed, which can be used for extra storage and seating.

Designer tip: Storage beds are another great way to get extra space without giving up on style.

Choose the right nightstand

Choosing the right type of storage can make a huge difference in a small bedroom. Bedside tables reduce clutter and give your bedroom a polished look. When choosing a nightstand, make sure to opt for one that has drawers instead of an open one.

Hide your dresser in the closet

Big furniture can put the squeeze on arranging small bedrooms. If you have closet space, tuck your chest or dresser in the closet. You’ll free up valuable floor space, make your room appear larger, and have your clothes in one convenient spot.

Don't use too many pieces

But remember: too many pieces can overpower a small bedroom and make it feel cluttered, and pieces that are too small won't make much of an impact. Choosing a few larger pieces can give the room several major focal points, without feeling too busy.

Bed ideas for small rooms

This is an essential part of creating a spacious primary bedroom.

A medium sized bed, placed in the center of the room against a back wall creates space on both sides for bedside table storage. A four poster bed can add the illusion of space in a room with high ceilings. Think tall when it comes to your headboard, and lengthen your room by hanging curtains on the windows.

Get creative with your headboard

Instead of a conventional headboard, try something that takes up a bit less space. First, hang an area rug or gorgeous fabric behind your bed. Then, place a room divider behind the bed—preferably one that includes storage space. At this point, wallpaper, mirrors, or a picture gallery can create a focal point behind the bed. If you have a wooden board, you can paint a headboard on your wall. If this idea doesn't seem appealing, try an upholstered headboard, which can be a slim and elegant solution to the problem.

Remember, small layout, outsized opportunities

Need a smaller bed, a different dresser, or to start over? Instead of stretching to fill a massive space, tiny rooms let you focus on a few perfect pieces and special touches.

With a little imagination — or the helping hand of a Bassett interior designer  — your room will feel more like a boutique hotel room than a shoebox. And every square inch will be filled with personality. Yours!

Of all the rooms that you might consider “too small,” the bedroom isn’t the worst one to deal with. Despite the obvious storage issue, you don’t need too much extra space in your bedroom (just hold your dance parties elsewhere). However, the flow of movement and a serene feel are important, so here are five ways to arrange a seriously small bedroom, and some bonus tips and tricks, too.

5 Ways to Arrange Furniture in a Small Bedroom

1. Try for Symmetry

The first layout is what I currently have in my own small home. Bed centered under a large window, a bedside table on each side with just enough room to squeeze by, and an open wardrobe on the opposite wall. Because there’s no door swing to worry about on the wardrobe, I managed to squeeze in a chest of drawers between, but it’s a tight fit.

In most cases, we’d all like symmetrical bedrooms with easy access to both sides of the bed, if only for easy changing of sheets. This kind of symmetry will also make a bedroom feel more spacious. To make it possible, size down on the bedside table and think height, rather than width, for your storage.

2. Lose One Bedside Table

Here’s another option I considered: still with two-sided access to the bed, but with a less symmetrical feeling overall. A matching bedside table and chest of drawers would make this feel more considered, and it has the added bonus of enough room for proper wardrobe doors.

3. Or Lose Both

Sometimes there’s only one viable wall for a bed to sit on, and it’s too short for bedside tables at all. Here, they’re replaced by an overhead shelf (mount wall lights underneath it), while a chest of drawers and wardrobe are tucked in the corners of the room.

4. With a Closet

Here’s an option for those of you lucky enough to have a dedicated closet (I’m looking at you, North Americans) but not much actual bedroom space. Here, the bed is tucked in a corner under the window, using the window ledge as a bedside table. There’s just enough room alongside it for a pair of chests of drawers and a cool wall sconce as a bedside lamp.

5. Stack Your Storage

We’ve all seen the clothes-rail-as-headboard idea, but personally, I’m not sure I could sleep with all my clothing hanging over my head. In this smallest bedroom, the bed is hugged by three walls, while a clothes rail, hung at high height, sits above a pair of chests of drawers. The only thing this layout “gives up” is surface area on top of said chests, and I think it’s a good trade.

Four Actionable Tips for a Small Bedroom

1. Think Vertically

With minimal floor space, you’ve got to think creatively about storage. You can’t go outwards, but what about up or down? A platform bed with storage below or a high-level hanging rail in lieu of a traditional closet are both options that will eke out a bit more function from your small bedroom.

2. Use the Walls

Similarly, use the space along your walls. A wall-mounted TV instead of one on a unit, a small shelf in lieu of a bedside table, or sconces instead of bulky bedside lamps.

3. Lose Some Sheets

A small bedroom often means at least two sides of the bed are against a wall, or at least have minimal space around the perimeter. This can be particularly annoying for changing the bed—especially if you insist on a top sheet and layers of blankets. Make like the Europeans and go for a fitted one plus a duvet only; this will shorten the amount of time you’re cursing your small room. Don’t worry, it’ll still be cozy.

5. Make it Cozy

Finally, a small bedroom needn’t be a boring one. Working with what you’ve got, think cozy and warm rather than spare and minimal. While you don’t want clutter, a bit of color and texture via pillows and throws, as well as good lighting, can go a long way to making a small space feel special.

Small‌ ‌bedroom‌ - ‌how‌ ‌arrange‌ ‌furniture‌ to make it cozy?

An interesting problem: there is a small bedroom - how to arrange furniture in it? Conditions: you can not clutter up the room, you need to place a bed, bedside tables or a chest of drawers in the room, and, preferably, also a wardrobe. The task is complicated by the layout: the shape of the room (narrow or square), the location of doors and windows, the presence of niches. Is it possible to cope with all this without the help of a professional interior designer? Of course! If you know the main rules.

Today you will find the most complete guide to arranging furniture in a small bedroom: how to arrange the elements, how to visually expand the space and a lot of interesting little things. Read to the end! In 5 minutes you will learn everything that the same interior designers know about and actively use in practice.

Harmony in the bedroom starts with the right color of the walls

In a small bedroom, you can not use bright saturated colors or complex patterns. The best solution: moderate, pastel shades and a simple ornament.

The shade of the floor should contrast slightly with the color of the furniture and blend harmoniously with the wall decoration. For a small room, experts advise choosing parquet or laminate with a diagonal pattern - again, in order to visually expand the area.

The main ways of arranging furniture in the bedroom

In interior design, there are three basic schemes for arranging furniture:

  1. Symmetrical;
  2. Asymmetrical;
  3. Circular.

We also need to choose one of these schemes in order to properly furnish the bedroom. You can arrange everything on your own. But you've probably already tried this. Otherwise, they would not be looking for a way to make it more beautiful. Therefore, now in detail about each of them, in order to choose the most suitable one in the future and test it in practice.

Symmetric

When you have a square‌ ‌bedroom‌ and the question arises how to ‌arrange‌ bedroom set, a symmetrical scheme is ideal. Paired items or furniture of the same size are installed opposite each other. For example: two bedside tables located on both sides of the bed is a symmetrical way of arranging furniture.

Psychologists say that a symmetrical scheme is ideal for perfectionists, pedantic people who tend to organize everything in order. Symmetry creates a cozy, calm atmosphere - it is difficult to come up with something more suitable for organizing a quality holiday.

Asymmetry

Do you have an irregularly shaped bedroom with niches, recesses and a complex layout? Use an asymmetric way of arranging furniture. Its essence is to choose a single focal point in the room, and organize the rest of the objects around it. The bed can serve as such a point. It is installed in a way that is convenient for you, and the rest of the items are dispersed in the corners and niches.

When choosing an asymmetric arrangement of furniture, designers recommend adhering to the swing principle, alternating high and low objects: low bed with upholstered headboard and tall wardrobe, low pouffe - taller chest of drawers.

In a circle

Universal way of arrangement - circular, suitable for rooms of any layout and area. Here, too, one focal point is needed, around which the rest of the objects are collected. But that focus doesn't have to be the furniture—sometimes it's just the carpet.

General recommendations for arranging furniture in a compact bedroom

Let's first decide what furniture is indispensable in the bedroom. It is with her that we will deal in an attempt to distribute everything competently and conveniently:

If a large wardrobe is already in another room, then it is not necessary to put the same one in the bedroom, you can get by with a chest of drawers for the most necessary things, for example, for storing linen. And if you order a bed with orthopedic base and a lifting mechanism, with a linen niche under the base, you can also store out-of-season clothes there, etc.

When the area of the bedroom allows, it will be completed with a bench, an ottoman, a dressing table.

When arranging all this furniture in a room, it is important to follow certain rules:

Do you have a plan on paper and are you satisfied with everything in it? Move on to its implementation!

Planning a compact bedroom

The smaller the square of the room, the less furniture we will try to place here. If it is possible to move the closet to another room and put a bed with a width of 160 cm instead of 180 or 200 cm, let's do it. When choosing furniture, also give preference to those models that have the greatest functionality: chests of drawers with full extension drawers, beds with a niche, dressing tables immediately with a mirror, banquettes - also with a niche for different things, etc.

As for the arrangement itself, in a small bedroom it is advisable to avoid placing the bed directly opposite the door, as well as placing it right next to the window. Both options are equally uncomfortable.

What else do you need to know when planning the interior of a compact or narrow bedroom?

Photos of finished bedrooms are usually taken from only one angle, it is difficult to assess how comfortable the given solutions are in reality. If you rely on a photo from the Internet in planning as a source of ideas, find those where the same room is presented, only from different angles. This will help you fully assess the situation and imagine whether such a decision is right for you or not.

Not everything that you decide to borrow from other people's interiors is appropriate to copy at home. It is necessary to check the practicality of each solution so that instead of planning and design, you do not get complete confusion and discomfort.

These nuances must be taken into account when planning a small bedroom:

  1. The number of square meters at your disposal. 9 sq.m. - This is the norm for a bedroom for two people. If the footage is smaller, you need to think about an additional source of air, supply and exhaust ventilation, for example, or about combining a room with a balcony, storage room, part of the corridor. Of course, at 9squares, of which 4 sq.m. will take away only a soft bed, do not put at least some furniture other than a chest of drawers or a pair of bedside tables.
  2. Lighting. The bedroom is a secluded place, but not so much as to do without a window at all. In addition, you will need small bedside sconces or table lamps, especially if you like to read in the morning or before bedtime.
  3. Privacy. In an effort to achieve minimalism, the door is removed from the bedroom, and then they endure nightly raids by children, smells coming from the kitchen, and other inconveniences. don't remove the door from the bedroom. She is needed there, even if adding it, you will have to abandon the additional chest of drawers standing next to the doorway.

How to arrange furniture in a small narrow bedroom?

And if it's a narrow‌ ‌bedroom‌, then how‌ ‌arrange‌ ‌furniture‌? A narrow room is always a division into two functional areas: for sleeping (bed, bedside tables) and for storing things, working or taking care of yourself. The working area is always taken out to the door, the depth of the room is dedicated to the recreation area. The exact location of each piece of furniture depends on whether the doorway is in a narrow or wide wall.

How to arrange a bed in a small bedroom?

The position of the bed is of the utmost importance. If it is designed for one user, you can put it in any way you like: in the corner, sideways to one of the walls, placed between the window and the door. Single bed bed can be set up however you like - and this is the only important rule.

But if the bed width is 160 cm or more, then: It is necessary to provide an approach to the bed - 60-70 cm on both sides; It is advisable to avoid being in line with the door; You can choose a diagonal or island arrangement.

Rarely, but it happens that the only possible furnishing option is a headboard to the window. In this case, you will need a bed with a low back, flush with the windowsill, as well as good blinds or curtains to block out the light from the street.

Where to put a closet in a small bedroom?

For room 9-10 sq. m. it is better to choose a wardrobe:

Such a wardrobe is usually placed along the wall adjacent to the one to which the head of the bed adjoins. If the bedroom is narrow, it is taken out to the wall opposite the one where the bed stands.

If there is no space for a large wardrobe, but there are niches, they can be equipped with railing for coat hangers and a sliding door. No niches? It remains to equip the mezzanine areas above the bed or at the entrance to the room. But here you need to take care of the security of fastening.

How to visually expand the space in a small bedroom?

The furniture is arranged. Let's move on to the details. In a small bedroom, the main task is to make a visually spacious, light room. Therefore, at the last stage, we choose decorative elements and textiles that will help us create the desired effect.

Skip the elaborate decor for something simple and practical. Add a shelf above your headboard or against an adjacent wall to store your favorite books. Find a place for a mirror, but so that sleeping people are not reflected in it (they say that this is not according to Feng Shui). Choose soft, light-colored textiles to keep the room cozy without being overdone. Be sure to use multiple lights in addition to the main light source.

All this together will help you create a harmonious interior in which it will be comfortable to relax and be filled with energy.

Introduction

When arranging a small bedroom, it is important to think through everything to the smallest detail so that this room becomes a place for a good rest. After all, in this room it is often necessary to place not only a bed, but also a wardrobe or other furniture for storage, and sometimes a work area. We've put together a few tips to help you arrange furniture in a small bedroom.

How to arrange furniture in a small bedroom: ergonomic rules

When arranging a small sleeping room, you need to solve two problems: make the room cozy and save as much usable space as possible. No matter how modest the size of the bedroom, it will not be possible to do without planning. So you can take into account all the nuances: the number of windows, the area of \u200b\u200bthe room, its shape and features (the presence of ledges, niches or balconies). The plan can be drawn on paper or created in a special program. With the help of the plan, you can equip the functional areas in the room, for example, allocate a place for sleeping and relaxing or for work, consider different ways of arranging furniture. Furniture in a small room should not interfere with free movement, so place it at a sufficient distance from each other. Make several options to choose the best one.

Bed. When buying a bed, opt for lighter and airy options with a minimum of details instead of bulky ones. So the furniture will not physically and visually occupy the entire room, where there is already little space. Pay attention to the location of the bed.

Cabinet. A mirror wardrobe with sliding doors or built-in furniture looks great in a small bedroom. Both options hold enough clothes, shoes and other personal items. At the same time, such cabinets allow you to save free space, especially if you choose the highest option, under the ceiling. In a small bedroom, a narrow wardrobe can be placed against the wall adjacent to the one adjacent to the head of the bed or against the wall opposite the bed. If you don’t want to occupy the entire wall with one cabinet, think about the corner option. Such a wardrobe will fit perfectly into almost any corner of even the smallest bedroom. At the same time, such models are quite roomy, so you do not have to buy additional racks or shelves.

It is also possible to place wardrobes on the sides of the bed. Consider ditching a full-wall walk-in closet and opting for two smaller wardrobes. Place them on either side of the bed.

Cabinets or tables. Small nightstands near the bed are multifunctional items. You can put the necessary things in the boxes - a charger, a book, glasses. And on the cabinet itself, leave the phone or put the clock.

Little secrets: how to arrange furniture in a small bedroom

When decorating a bedroom, try to arrange all the items so that you get a comfortable and harmonious space. You should have enough space to move freely around the room. Try to use little tricks to make the room look bigger.

Functional use of space. The place next to the window block or balcony can also be equipped according to your taste and placed here:

Second tier. If the area of the room is catastrophically small, and the ceilings, on the contrary, are quite high, consider creating a second tier. Here you can place a comfortable bed. Such a move will allow you to “break” the space in a small room, so it will look completely different.

Visually increase the space and move the walls apart. Simple tricks will help to adjust the configuration of a small room:

Distract attention from the size of the room. Bright decor elements and unexpected design techniques can divert attention from even the most unfortunate layout.

Explore all your options and use the most suitable way (or ways) for arranging furniture in a small bedroom to create a harmonious interior in which you can relax comfortably.

When planning the design of a small bedroom, you can use both photos from the Internet, as well as expert advice. They will help in choosing not only furniture, but also finishes that will visually expand the space, make it functional and cozy.
