Dump and refresh the solution when it starts to get saturated with dead flies.

Capture them in a bottle

Another popular DIY option is trapping the flies in a bottle—a beer, fruit juice, or wine bottle with just the dregs left works perfectly. Put plastic wrap over the bottle’s opening, secure it in place with a rubber band, then poke a few small holes in the top. Once the flies climb in, lured to the sweet scent of fermenting grapes, they’ll be stuck and eventually die.

        Step 1. Inspect

        The main enemy of kitchen midges is the most ordinary hygiene, which deprives them of food. Therefore, when fruit flies appear, first of all, check the kitchen from the inside:

        • Go through the potatoes, onions, and carrots stored for the winter. Throw away or recycle rotten vegetables. Do it regularly.
        • Place separate containers under bulk products so that moisture does not get into them. When pouring, carefully check for fruit fly larvae in the cereals.
        • Put all perishable food in the refrigerator. Try not to fill the vase with fruit for future use. Do this only as needed.
        • Wash the bread box thoroughly and dry. Only after that put bread in it.
        • If there are plants in the kitchen, loosen the soil, remove dead leaves, wipe the outside of the pots well and wash the drip tray with detergent. If you find midges in flower pots, change the soil to a new one, and irrigate the leaves of the plants with a weak solution of potassium permanganate.
        • Take out the trash and wash the bucket with a strong disinfectant several times.
        • Change the water in your pet trough regularly and make a habit of putting leftover food in the refrigerator or designated container.
        • Examine the refrigerator. Throw away old leftover food and moldy food.

        Step 2: Do a Spring Clean

        It's important to clean all kitchen surfaces. The center of reproduction of midges may suddenly appear in some crack, where, for example, a piece of apple accidentally fell.

        • Clean the hob thoroughly, especially the side walls. The oven can be quickly cleaned with steam. Place a baking sheet inside with water diluted with dishwashing detergent. Preheat oven to 100°C and leave for 30 minutes. Now grease and burns can be easily removed with a damp cloth.
        • Be sure to check the microwave oven. To get rid of stubborn fat, use a mixture of 500 ml of water and 1 tablespoon of citric acid (or 4 tablespoons of lemon juice). Heat the resulting solution in the microwave for 5-10 minutes at maximum power, then let the device cool for 5 minutes and wipe the surface with a sponge.
        • Thoroughly clean all hard-to-reach places with a brush, mop the floors. Pay special attention to the compartment under the sink.
        • Wipe off the stains from the refrigerator and clean it from the inside.
        • Clean out the sink drain where small pieces of organics often get stuck. You can use any pipe cleaner or the traditional recipe: put a few teaspoons of baking soda into the hole, pour in a glass of vinegar and wait 20 minutes. Then rinse with hot water.

        Step 3. Destroy the midges

        If you have already removed everything, and the midges are still enjoying life, you should use special bait-traps. Wrap a plastic glass or jar with cling film, after putting a piece of fruit on the bottom or pouring a little sweet wine, compote, apple cider vinegar.

        Pierce the film in several places with a thick needle and leave the container overnight. The flies attracted by the aromas will flock to the bait, but they will not be able to get back because of the size of the holes. The filled trap is best to immediately throw it into the trash can on the street.
