Decorating with vases is a beautiful way to style your home. Whether filled with beautiful fresh flowers or displayed as decorative objects, vases make a lovely finishing touch for any room.

There's also an array of ways they can be displayed, too, from arranged in groups on a mantelpiece or a side table, to placed alone in the center of a dining table.
To help you get inspired we've rounded up an array of beautiful decorating ideas for arranging vases as well as some handy tips from the experts about where to place them and what vases to use for certain blooms.

Decorating with vases – where to start
When it comes to decorating with vases, choosing the right vase is key as it can transform a floral display.
If you are given a large bouquet bursting with blooms you'll want to make sure you have the right shape of vase to show them off, alternatively a well-chosen vase can elevate the humblest of blooms into a beautiful centerpiece or arrangement, so it's worth having a selection of sizes and designs available.
However there's no need to fill vases with flowers for them to look beautiful, statement pieces with sculptural shapes, hand-painted with artisan designs, or made from beautiful materials that showcase fabulous texture, whether rustic or reflective, can look stunning displayed alone or in a curated grouping.
1. Choose the right vase for your flowers
(Image credit: Future / Malcolm Menzies)
When it comes to decorating with flowers be sure to have a selection of vases at the ready. Different blooms have different habits, plus, as living things, they change over time causing the shape of the arrangement to evolve.
'I’d recommend having a choice of vases,' explains London-based florist Gail Smith for LSA International . 'A bunch of pink tulips could look amazing in one vase and a dog’s dinner in another. Vases whose neck is narrower than the base of the vase are the easiest to arrange in.'
For an arrangement of soaring spire flowers such as delphiniums or larkspur, try a narrow flared glass vase as pictured and keep it clear in order to let the blooms speak for themselves.
2. Line a mantel with artisan vessels
(Image credit: Styling Sally Denning / Photograph Polly Wreford)
Arranging a series of vases in different shapes and heights along is a lovely mantel decor idea. For an artful display with texture and interest choose a selection of organic, handmade ceramic vases such as these designs from The New Craftsman and Be Still Ceramics.
While they will look beautiful as a permanent display, filling the vases with a few single stems of seasonal blooms will help keep your mantel looking pretty and fresh throughout the year.
3. Create table centerpiece with vintage charm
(Image credit: Brent Darby)
There's noting like a beautiful hand-tied bouquet of seasonal blooms to fill a room with color and fragrance, plus they make the perfect accent piece for entertaining guests, whether at a diner party or afternoon tea in the kitchen. When it comes to displaying flowers as a dining table decor idea, don't be afraid to stray from the traditional glass vase.
Urns and confit jars are brilliant for creating a rustic farmhouse look and are perfect for 'large headed flowers, including double tulips, peonies, garden roses and hydrangea,' explains florist Philippa Craddock . 'The narrower neck helps to hold and support these larger stems, to create bold designs with ease.'
4. Arrange artisan vases on shelves
(Image credit: Future / Jon Day)
Create a striking display in a modern living room by decorating shelves with an array of ceramic artisan vases in a mix of abstract shapes, painterly finishes and bold colors.
To help the vases stand out, paint the shelves in a muted shade, this will bring enough color to off-set the vases without competing with them.
5. Brighten up a hallway
(Image credit: Future / Brent Darby)
As the room into which we welcome guests, the hallway makes a perfect space to display vases fill of fresh flowers as they are guaranteed to bring a joyful and uplifting feel. If you're looking to embrace entry table decor then a console table or sideboard is a must.
In addition to be a practical, 'a console table will also give you a surface to add some decor so people coming into your home get a sense of your personal style and what to expect,' says Emma Deterding, founder and creative director, Kelling Designs . 'Dress the console with decorative vases and objets, display your best family photos and bring in a touch of nature with plants.'
Decorating with mirrors above a console will make a hallway feel instantly bigger, but is also a lovely way to amplify a vase of flowers making them appear more abundant.
6. Display a series of bud vases
(Image credit: Philippa Craddock)
When it comes to floral displays bigger doesn't necessarily mean better – single stems in little vases can be just as effective as a large centerpiece and really allows each bloom to shine. 'I like to use bud vases for quick, elegant table designs, using simplistic single stems to mixed mini bunches of small stems,' says Philippa Craddock.
These chinoiserie vases are great for adding a pop of pattern and would fit beautifully fully with a blue and white scheme.
7. Cluster bud vases
(Image credit: Future / Paul Raeside)
For a delicate yet impactful display for a dining room try popping stems in glass bud vases and arranging them in the middle of the table alongside a series fo glass candlesticks.
Lightweight, the vases can easily be moved when it's time for serving food and there's no need to worry about large vases falling over. Be sure to choose blooms that aren't too heavy so the vases don't tip over.
8. Use a tall vase for sculptural branches
(Image credit: Photograph by Matthew Williams / Project by Athena Calderone )
Decorating with plants needn't cost a fortune, in fact just a few foraged, leafy branches can make a beautiful sculptural centerpiece in a neutral room as this space proves.
For best results, display branches in tall vases with a narrow neck to keep them upright. Alternatively, 'apothecary glass vases are superb for wild, whimsical, just picked bunches of longer stems and branches,' suggests florist Philippa Craddock.
9. Display colored glass vases
(Image credit: Future / Brent Darby)
Tinted glass vases have grown in popularity in recent years as more of us are embracing color in our homes. They can be a lovely way to accent colorful blooms or to elevate humble wild flowers, plus they are handy for obscuring messy stems.
For a dazzling display, place a selection along a windowsill where they will shine like jewels in the sunlight.
10. Pair vases of different heights
(Image credit: Oka)
A living room sideboard or console table makes the perfect place to style a decorative display featuring vases. 'If you're wondering how to style a console table try seeking inspiration from nature and think about the heights of the pieces,' says Sue Jones, founder of Oka . ‘A vibrant floral display can really bring a room to life, especially when arranged in a statement vase or pot. '
'For spring and summer, look for ceramics featuring nature-inspired textures and calming shades of blue or cream, and be sure to pair designs of different heights together – contrasting tall and short pieces is pleasing to the eye,’ she adds.
11. Use vintage vessels
(Image credit: Alitex)
Bold, blowsy blooms like dahlias can be overpowering in a single vase – to make the most of them try splitting the bunch and arranging them across a series of vases.
If you love decorating with vintage, old metal floristry vases of enamel jugs in green are particularly effective at setting off hot-colored blooms and add lovely character with their time-worn patina.
12. Fill jugs with dried flowers
(Image credit: Flicky Wallace / Dot & Dandelion)
While fresh flowers are hard to beat, they only have a limited lifespan, on the other hand, by decorating with dried flowers you can create a beautiful everlasting display.
'By their very nature dried flowers have shrunk in the drying process so you usually need more stems to fill a vase. For this reason, the vase can look messy with lots of stems, so I prefer to use an opaque or colored glass vase to hide the stems,' explains florist Gail Smith for LSA International. 'Dried flowers are often straight and stiff so I include plenty of dried flowers that have a wobble in the stem to add movement.'
You can buy ready-dried flowers but what can be even more special is to dry your own pickings from the garden. Once you have learnt how to dry flowers you can create endless lasting arrangements such as this by Dot and Dandelion displayed in a vintage jug.
13. Arrange sculptural vases on a table
(Image credit: Styling Alyce Taylor / Photograph Jake Curtis)
Arranging shapely vessels on a simple table can be a fabulous way to bring interest to an empty living room corner.
When arranging decorative objects work in odd numbers and select pieces of different heights to ensure rhythm and balance. If you're planning to keep to a monochrome palette, choose pieces with sculptural forms and materials with plenty of surface texture.
When it comes to what table to choose, try a simple pedestal table so as not to distract from the artful display.
Can you decorate with empty vases?
Yes, you can decorate with empty vases. Gone are the days when vases are kept in the cupboard and brought only occasionally. Many vases look just as good empty as they do filled, and can make for beautiful displays in their own right, so there's no need to store them away once flowers go over.
There are many vessels used to display flowers that also make lovely decorative objects: urns, confit pots, and vintage jugs all look beautiful arranged in small groups or on their own. in an alcove or windowsill.
Empty vases can make beautiful arrangements, especially if they are in lovely colors and have beautiful sculptural shapes, patterns and textures. Empty vases work well displayed in odd numbers and at different heights.
Arrange them on a sideboard in a living or dining room, or add interest to a corridor or hallway by displaying them on a console table. They also look brilliant displayed on shelves or in a glazed cabinet.

How do you display a vase in your house?
There are many ways to display vases in your home. When filled with flowers they make the perfect table centerpiece or can be placed on a console in a hallway as part of your entry table decor ideas.
Vases bursting with new season blooms are classic spring mantel decor idea for brightening up your home, alternatively, try filling them with dried flowers or rustic branches for a fall mantel display.
When flower vases aren't in use don't hide them away in a cabinet in the utility, consider displaying them on open shelves or in a glazed cabinet – not only will this make for a lovely display, it will allow them to be easily seen and accessed.
Statement vases with colorful hand-painted designs or striking shapes look lovely displayed alone with no flowers on a mantel, shelf or side table, alternatively, try displaying a collection of vases in different shapes and materials for a quirky display.

How to Decorate a Vase - DIY Stylish Tips by Eli.ru
Many people think that the main purpose of vases is to put flowers in them. And empty accessories are hidden on a shelf in a closet or pantry. But if you show a little imagination, you can create an exclusive item from any, even a nondescript-looking thing, which will decorate the interior, become a gift for a loved one or perform some practical function. For example, by filling an ordinary glass vessel with cereals or bamboo sticks, you will turn it into a knife holder.
Decorating a vase is an exciting and enjoyable process. Author's products are not cheap, and they will certainly harmoniously fit into the interior, because you will select the materials and palette based on the existing style of the room. Their undoubted advantage is uniqueness. You can be sure that you will not find an identical product anywhere else, because they store energy and a piece of your soul.
If there are a couple of seemingly completely unnecessary and unsightly vessels lying around in the house, let's consider ideas on how to create a work of art with the help of simple improvised means.
DIY decorative vases are made from a variety of items, and most of them you already have in your home. The main rule is that ready-made options fit the style of the house. So, if you have an ecological design, products with natural materials look harmonious. With a minimalist style, modern dyes will add expressiveness to the vessel.
Use:
- glass painting: spray paints, acrylic;
- dried and live plants, cut branches, greenery, artificial flowers;
- small items: stones, rhinestones, beads, coins, shells;
- edible materials: cereals, sweets, pumpkin and sunflower seeds, pasta;
- artificial and natural leather, various ribbons, rope thread, lace, fabric;
- decoupage napkins.
The décor can be both simple and elaborate. For example, you can fill the container with multi-colored cereals in layers. Or paint it with zigzags, stripes, circles. For each case, you can create a unique option that will bring notes of freshness and aesthetics to the interior.
How to decorate a flower vase with your own hands - preparation for work: what you need to know
Before you start decorating a vase, you need to take care of some points:
- First, you can not work with a dirty object that has grease stains . It must be thoroughly washed and wiped with a degreaser. Any minor defect can spoil the design.
- Secondly, you need to decide on the technique. Creative work is not rushed. To do this, pay attention to the shape and material from which the vessel is made. It can be square, round, high, low. Functionality and size also matter.
- Third, prepare your work area. There should be enough light, and place everything you need nearby so as not to be distracted by the search for components. Set up a trash can close by to throw away everything you don't need.
Decorating vases with your own hands - the best ideas for inspiration
Among the wide variety of decor, let's look at some of the most original and simple ones that even a beginner can handle.
With jute thread or rope
Decorating dishes with twine is becoming more and more relevant today, and such accessories can often be seen in the homes of people who are interested in handmade things. This is because the decor in the end turns out to be stylish, and the work does not take much time.
Needed:
- glass, plastic or any other vessel. The shape is not important, as a flexible rope will fit any;
- skein of twine;
- PVA glue, "Moment" or some quick-drying glue, for example: E-6000;
- permanent paint and other optional items: fabric, buttons, beads, pine cones, dry leaves, etc.
The easiest option is to soak the rope in glue and wind it up. Do this carefully so that there are no gaps. At the end of the work, the thread is cut and the end is hidden. If you want something more complicated, you can do weaving, for example, decorate with a pigtail.
Another fairly simple and original way is to wrap the vase with a rope, and then immerse the lower part in the coloring solution. The result is an original design with an ombre effect.
If someone finds the rope decoration too complicated, just tie the thread in one knot over a satin fabric or ribbon.
These vessels will suit almost any design, but will look especially impressive with other rope details. By the way, you can decorate baskets, chairs, hangers with twine, make food coasters and many other household items out of it.
Ribbons and laces
A subtle delicate pattern will add touchingness to the product. You can use old bottles, glasses and other containers that are idle. Cook:
- adhesive,
- lace or ribbon ,
- brush,
- liquid containing alcohol,
- spray paint - optional.
Liquid with alcohol is needed to wipe dishes. Next, measure the required amount of lace, apply glue to it, and attach it to the vessel, smoothing out the folds. Let dry.
Paint can be applied to the container, and only then - lace. Put flowers inside and enjoy the creation of your hands!
With artificial snow
A vase decorated with artificial snow flakes will bring a little bit of winter into your home. To do this, you can purchase loose material or in spray can . You need to work with them differently. So, the snow in the spray is sprayed onto the branches. It seems as if you just brought them from the street, where a blizzard is raging.
There are many ways to use loose snow:
- put it inside, and on top - cones or New Year's toys;
- sprinkle them on flowers, twigs, plants;
- , apply glue to the edges of the vessel and dip them in snow, and place garlands inside.
With stones, shells, beads
This decoration is simple, but looks spectacular. Just first you need to think about how the objects will be located. You can create an asymmetric pattern, stick colored sand, complementing the composition with sea stones.
If it's too easy for you, glue on pearl beads. Mother-of-pearl shells look unusual. In the same way, you can stick branches, bark on top, gluing them randomly or in a certain order. The photo shows that a lot depends on the imagination.
Floor vase decoration
Very suitable for large plants and bouquets. You need to decorate them in a special way - it is best to select bulky items for this.
Can be used:
- Knitted covers. The design is only limited by your imagination. You can use any color, technique and pattern.
- Decor for a floor vase in the Paper Art technique. To do this, bundles are made from single-layer napkins and, by gluing them, create a three-dimensional pattern. When the composition dries, spray paint is applied to it.
- Coins. To do this, rubber glue is applied to them and attached to the container, creating a wavy or zigzag pattern.
Design options for glass vases
For glass containers, all the methods described above, as well as many others, are suitable. They look very original if you arrange them in mosaic or decoupage technique, paint with colored acrylic paints, decorate with glue and various cereals. But the interior filling is especially popular. For example, compositions:
- with candles - regular or floating,
- Christmas balls,
- fresh berries,
- dry twigs,
- wine stoppers,
- stones,
- bright fruit,
- gifts of nature - cones, acorns.
Real herbal compositions can be created in wide vessels. And if you bring sand from every vacation, pour it into a transparent container in layers - it will remind you of travels. In the bathroom, you can use a marine theme, as well as vessels filled with handmade soap.
Decorating glass vases with bulk products, such as coffee beans, multi-colored beans, peas, will not only provide a stylish art object, but also an organizer to store the necessary things, such as knives or makeup brushes.

- After spreading a layer of one shade, add a couple of drops of a darker color to create the effect of marbled paint.

We take a glass vase in our hands and pour a little paint into it, for example, blue. We scroll the vase a little in our hands, then add a few drops of paint of a different color. If the first coat of paint does not spread well on the glass, add a few drops of water to the paint bottle. But, just a little, otherwise the paint layer will be too thin and it will lag behind the glass.
We alternately add different colors of paint and twist the vase in our hands, gradually tilting it down until the entire inner surface is painted over.
You can combine an indefinite number of different colors, it all depends on your preference and taste.

Traditional shaped vases are no longer relevant. The shape and size of the product can be changed with homemade decor. Round, cone-shaped, flat - all these types of vases can decorate the interior, become the missing highlight. The shape of the product depends on the imagination of the master and the chosen material. Most often, round or square shapes are used for blanks.
Round vases are clear and concise. They are most often modeled with plastic bottles, papier-mâché, primed and decorated. To make the vase look like a finished decorative element, painted dry branches are inserted into it. Square products are complemented by fashionable details and used in an interior designed in a minimalist style. The vase is coated with a primer or paint, and then decorated.
You can, of course, buy a finished vase in a store. But even the most expensive thing cannot be compared with a unique piece of decor made by oneself.

Stickers
The easiest way to decorate a plain vase with your own hands is to stick a stencil, sticker or paper cut inside with any filler. They will look especially impressive on transparent vases. Additionally, you can paint the surface with metallic acrylic paints.
Tip! You can also stick a strip of rhinestones in the form of a ribbon on a glass vase. This decor can be found in sewing stores.
Vase filling
Decor material can be made with your own hands from cereals. Barley, rice, buckwheat, millet can be used as a filler. Each of them gives its own texture. The result will be even more interesting if you mix different cereals on paper, cover with paint and let dry.
You can decorate such a flower vase not only from the outside, but also from the inside, for example, using the same cereal. To do this, you need to install a glass or other container in a vase, and fill the space between the walls with colored cereals.
Coloring
For this decoration, you need to take a vase and an original bottle. Next, you should cut the surface of the container, apply a pattern on it with paints and blot the surface with a sponge to give it a relief texture. When the paint dries, you need to outline the location of the future drawing with a pencil. Next, with a pen or a toothpick, apply dots of the same size to the drawing.
Clothing decor
You can decorate a vase or glass with your own hands with ordinary socks or stockings. It is necessary to cut off the part of the sock above the heel. Next, put the glass on cardboard or fabric, circle its bottom with a pencil and cut it out along the outlined outline. A similar figure must be cut out of the remnants of the sock. Sew the cut piece and sock together. Lay the fabric on the bottom of the container, and place the cardboard on top.
Important! For this method of decoration, it is better to choose a small container.
Paper decor
A quilling paper application can be placed on a glass or vase. You can prepare a simpler paper decoration with your own hands. To do this, you need parchment, glue and a container for decoration. It is necessary to cut strips from paper and twist them into cords. Next, stick even strips on the vase. When the container dries, you need to glue paper bundles and decorate it with rhinestones or sprinkle with colorless varnish.
