It does not take a lot of time or things to decorate a buffet. With my tips, you can style a buffet beautifully in minutes.
I’ve decorated my white sideboard in three different ways to show you how easy it can be!
My white buffet is one of my favorite surfaces to decorate. I love the height and length of it! Most buffets and sideboards are wonderful areas to add pretty decor to your home!
The buffet was once in our dining room at our StoneGable house but now it is in the great room of our Tanglewood house. Buffets are not just for dining rooms!
I thought it might be helpful to show you three different ways to style a buffet. And I’ll share a couple tips that will help you use your buffet to add YOUR personality to your dining room.
Actually, any long flat surface can benefit from these easy tips!
SOME BUFFET GUIDELINES TO REMEMBER
Basic buffet decorating things to know…
- decorate your buffet’s space but don’t overdo or overlayer it!
- try to avoid using lots of little collectibles or small things
- use faux blooms and plants only if they look real up to 1 foot away
- experiment and play with your accessories
- less is more
- keep a tight color palette
- change things up often
A LOOK AT THE BUFFET IN A DINING ROOM
When we remodeled our StoneGable dining room (feels like a hundred years ago) I found this pretty white buffet and knew it would work in the room.
One thing I did to keep it updated and fresh was to keep my china and dishes off the top! This is very important!
Lots of dishes on the top of a buffet even in a dining room looks cluttered and dated.
Try stying it without dishes! Keep the dishes in the buffet and not on it.
The buffet decor is classic, adding a juxtaposition of bling and burlap! I love those two words together! BLING AND BURLAP!!!!
I like this decor because it looks sharp and clean and pretty!
A DINING ROOM BUFFET IS A SUPPORTING ACTOR
Your dining room table, in most cases, is the star of your dining room. And the centerpiece on it should be its Diva! Nothing in the room should show up the Diva! So the things on your buffet or sideboard should not fight for attention.
But that does not mean your buffet should not be decorated too.
Here is a decorating recipe for styling a fabulous sideboard every time.
USE SOMETHING ORGANIC ON A SIDEBOARD
Whether your buffet is in the kitchen or in your living room like mine is now all sideboards can use a few pretty organics.
Buffets and sideboards are the perfect places to add an element of organic design.
Here are a few ideas…
- a bunch of seasonal greens or flowers
- moss balls
- plants
- topiaries
- a trio of the same potted plant
You might like to see how to make these moss balls. TEXTURED MOSS BALL DIY. They are so super easy!
If you are thinking about going the faux route you might like to read CREATIVE WAYS TO USE FAUX FLOWERS
USE TALL ITEMS ON EITHER END OF SIDEBOARDS AND BUFFETS
Have you heard of buffet lamps or candlesticks? You know, the tall, skinny, candle-type lamp duo that go on either side of a buffet? They were so popular years ago because they added ambient light to either side of a sideboard and added a great bit of symmetry to a buffet.
We can bring a fresher, updated look to sideboards and buffets by using the buffet lamp principle but giving it a more modern feel!
Do add something tall to either side of your buffet. A lamp with a little more heft and a tall item to the other.
The mesh lamp works on the left side of the buffet. It’s just the right size and scale for the buffet. It’s a nice tall element at one end of the buffet. And it offers another layer of lighting too!
Use something tall on the buffet opposite a lamp.
A tall vignette would also work on one side of the buffet.
I often find myself creating a simple vignette using three items. And no wonder! Our eyes and mind LOVE anything grouped in threes. To see how to use this magical number when decorating, see THE MAGIC RULE OF THREE.
ADD “BRIDGE” DECOR
It’s a good idea to add a little something to bridge a lamp and a tall item at the other end of a buffet.
Three things that are alike make a beautiful “bridge” between the lamp and the other tall element on the buffet.
Instead of the three faux ferns in the same pots, I popped the middle fern in a slightly different container and put it on a couple burlap-covered books. I think just that little difference adds a lot of interest and a bit of texture to the decor on the buffet.
TIGHT COLOR PALETTE
One easy way to create a buffet that has a cohesive look is to use the colors in the room on the buffet. For the image above I used the browns in the lamp the sand and white colors of the baskets and the greens and browns of the faux plants.
And even if your room is colorful still use a tight color palette on a buffet.
Now it’s your turn! Take a look at the buffet in your dining room. Could it use a bit of a makeover? Why not put these tips and ideas into practice during a few commercials? I know you can do it!!!!!

Sideboard decor ideas can really elevate your entertaining space. As well as offering useful storage space, the sideboard is the perfect spot to display treasures and trinkets, and creates a focal point for artwork and lighting.
If you are gathering dining room ideas, don't just focus on the table – the sideboard really does have a role in your rooms scheme, too.
'Think about how you're going to bring your unique personality into the dining room to help decide how to style a sideboard,' says Ally Dowsing-Reynolds, co-CEO at home décor brand Dowsing & Reynolds .
'Books, art, photos, vases, trinkets, colors and details all provide an opportunity to say something about yourself, and make great talking points at dinner parties.'
Sideboard decor ideas
You can have a lot of fun dressing up your sideboard, and interior experts always relish the job.
'Sideboards are some of our favorite moments to style,' says Studio Ashby . 'Art, lighting, ceramics, beautiful books and trinkets are all chic choices.'
Below, we show you the experts' top sideboard decor ideas to set your dining room apart.
1. Make it pretty yet practical
Your sideboard is the perfect spot for styling decorative objects, but don't forget it can also be used for extra storage. Glazed-fronted sideboards can make for great small dining room ideas – the space will feel less crowded than with solid furniture, plus glass allows you to show off what you're storing – albeit in a chic way.
Louise Wicksteed, Design Director at Sims Hilditch , says: 'We love to use sideboards in dining rooms as this is a great way to use the space. They are perfect for storing crockery, napkins, and cutlery to be used for more formal occasions.'
2. Highlight sideboard decor ideas with lighting
If you are working on lighting a dining room, make space on a sideboard for lamps. This will not only allow you to create soft pools of low light – so welcome in a dining room – but will also illuminate your sideboard decor ideas.
Helen Pett, Design Ambassador at Arteriors London , adds: 'Of course, when entertaining, the additional table space can be used for floral arrangements, beautiful china and glassware and serving platters while still sitting prettily as key part of your décor.'
3. Maximize sideboard decor ideas with a mirror
(Image credit: 'Michelle Nussbaumer and Stephen Karlisch)
If you are considering dining room wall ideas that create drama, then an antiqued glass, elaborately framed-mirror is the best find for traditional dining spaces. Plus, decorating with mirrors will double the impact of any sideboard decor ideas you're displaying – especially in smaller or dark spaces. It's a win win.
4. Display art to focus attention on sideboard decor ideas
Art, hung centrally above a sideboard, placed centrally behind a dining table, can create a focal point that frames the entire space.
Whether it's wall-hung or propped on your sideboard, a good general rule of thumb to follow when styling your sideboard is to make the artwork around two-thirds of its width. This gives a visually pleasing proportion while also working to invigorate the space.
5. Employ the overlapping technique
To make your sideboard decor ideas feel curated, don't be afraid for your objects and anchoring pieces to 'overlap'.
Place a lamp slightly in front of your artwork, or let foliage, twigs or flowers spread across the central piece; this will allow the finished look to feel cohesive and interactive, rather than static and flat.
6. Play with height
(Image credit: Kristin Karch Photography/The Misfit House)
One of the most important elements of styling sideboard decor is to ensure your display includes objects of varying heights to add interest to the look.
'Playing with heights and layers is essential,' states Jane Rockett of Rockett St George . 'However, this doesn’t necessarily mean putting the tallest items in the center of the sideboard. An asymmetrical display looks particularly great when styling a sideboard and allows you to build height and a focal point at just one end.'
Ally at Dowsing Reynolds adds: 'Style an uneven assortment of smaller items alongside tall or oversized items to create height and layers. Piles of books that reflect your interests alongside meaningful sculptures make great focal points.'
If you choose sideboard decor ideas that chime with your dining table decor ideas you will create a neat, coordinated look, too.
7. Group objects in threes
To make sure your sideboard decor ideas don't look higgledy-piggledy, try grouping your objects into threes for a curated finish that's easy on the eye.
The rule of three is a great interior design tip that you can apply to many aspects of your decor scheme, and is certainly the magic number when it comes to styling for a fresh appeal.
'Much like your coffee table or shelves, styling your sideboard decor ideas is an opportunity to be playful and reveal more of your personality within your interior,' says Jane Rockett.
8. Create a tableau
If you're feeling a little overwhelmed at the prospect of styling your sideboard decor ideas, why not create a tableau – which is simply a group of objects that, together, look like they're made for each other?
Just as with coffee table styling, Jane Rockett suggests that 'you shouldn't worry about filling the entire space', while Arteriors' Helen Pett comments: 'We like starting with a nice low-rise sculpted centerpiece and a coffee table book stack for an everyday look.'
You could even simply add a group of candles at varying heights for a stylish and simple look.
9. Add a sculptural piece to anchor your display
(Image credit: Tiffany Leigh Design/Lauren Miller)
Sculptural vases, objets and lamps are a stylish way to make a statement and turn your sideboard decor ideas into an arty showcase that blends form and function – coordinate them to the rest of your scheme and you can pull a larger space together – useful if you are looking for uniting kitchen diner ideas.
'Add ambience and pockets of light with table lamps, and repeat textures, shapes and colors around the room,' suggests Ally Dowsing-Reynolds.
Don't neglect candles as part of your sideboard decor display. Jane Rockett adds: 'For a sideboard in the dining room, candles, candlesticks and vases always look beautiful.'
Louise Wicksteed says: 'When it comes to styling a dining room sideboard, we suggest placing a large candle at either end. Not only does this offer subtle background lighting around the table but also nods to the elegance of the room by providing well thought-out symmetry.'
10. Display your glassware
A sideboard can double up as a drinks cabinet in a dining room, and is ideal for displaying your pretty glassware for after-dinner drinks.
Jane Rockett says: 'A sideboard is the perfect place to curate a mini cocktail bar with a few of your favurite tipples and glassware on display.'
Mix your drinks' display with other pretty artefacts, candles and vases, or an oversized plant for extra wow factor.
How can I decorate my sideboard?
To decorate a sideboard well, there are a few rules to follow that are really useful:
- Start with your dining room color scheme, choosing items that reflect the accent shades used within the room – this is particularly useful if you are styling an open-plan kitchen/living room/diner, as it can help to tie the dining zone to the rest of the space.
- For a neat look, create a sideboard decor display that's identical at each end – perhaps with matching lamps at either end of the table, and a central vase and picture behind.
- Larger items look better than a collection of small trinkets for decorating a sideboard – you want to create impact not dust-collection.
- Display fresh flowers, houseplants and convincing faux blooms in a large display that brings organic shape and colors to the space.
- Hang art over a sideboard, put wall lights either side or table lamps at each end to draw attention to sideboard decor ideas at night.
What do you put in a sideboard?
Sideboards are really useful for storing everything you might need for dining – from cutlery and china to linen and flatware. You can also usefully store candles, matches, placemats and glassware in a sideboard. When shopping for a sideboard, consider what you will need to store in it – drawers will be more useful for storing candles, cutlery and placemats; cupboards for glassware and china. A combination of both is the most versatile choice.

Subsequently, it became an indispensable attribute of rural cuisine. However, designers defy stereotypical thinking by successfully adding sideboards to a modern style dining room.

The traditional wardrobe consists of three sections:
- The upper one is equipped with glass doors or without them. It is intended for storage of glassware (glasses, plates, service).
- The middle compartment is designed to store cutlery. It is separated from the top by a small countertop for preparing snacks.
- The lower one is equipped with shelves to accommodate heavy equipment. These are frying pans, pots, household appliances.
Over time, the bulky design has been transformed into a compact sideboard suitable for small spaces. A full-size sideboard is appropriate for large areas.
Benefits
The kitchen sideboard is a complete multifunctional cabinet that frees up space. This is not the only plus of the kitchen set. The following advantages are noted:
- Holds a large number of items. You can place all the available inventory.
- Suitable for any design. Models have been developed for installation in a large dining room, a compact kitchen in a private house and apartment. It will look harmoniously in a calm classic style and bold high-tech.
- Environmental safety. Natural materials are used in production. The risk of an allergy is excluded. Does not emit toxic fumes when the temperature rises.
- Aesthetically pleasing appearance.
- Manufacture of structures according to an individual project. If there is no suitable finished model, you can order the development of a layout.
An old restored sideboard is also suitable for decorating the kitchen. The peculiarity lies in the preservation of the original appearance. Only worn or damaged elements are replaced.
Varieties
Sideboard for dishes is grouped according to the type of construction:
- Closed. This option is a monolithic cabinet with doors. Some models are equipped with transparent windows. This allows you to view the contents of the sideboard.
- Open. It has shelves, drawers for storing inventory. Additionally, a worktop is built in. Doors are missing.
- Classic. Three-section cabinet for storing dishes. The upper part is equipped with shelves with glass doors. The middle one represents a free niche or countertop for food preparation. Lower - shelves closed with a blank door.
Sideboard harmoniously blends into the interior due to its shape. Straight and angular models have been developed.
Material
This piece of furniture is made from natural raw materials. Despite the large number of design ideas, options and formats, you cannot find options created from chemically harmful raw materials. Installed in the kitchen or dining buffet is not deformed by heating. Elimination of harmful toxins is excluded.
Modern models are made using:
- Natural wood. The sideboard made of noble breeds is additionally decorated with carvings. Pros - durable, wear-resistant, environmentally friendly. With proper care, it will retain its attractiveness for decades. Minus - refers to the expensive price segment.
- Chipboard, MDF. Visually imitate noble wood. However, external properties are inferior to quality. They have a limited service life. Belongs to the budget furniture category.
Pay attention! A sideboard made of wood or lumber must be treated with special protective equipment. The covering interferes with absorption of water, extraneous smells, pollution.
Sideboard in different styles
The sideboard can be made in the same style as the rest of the kitchen furniture. This method of design is appropriate if you want to emphasize a single style of the room.
The sideboard can also be used as an accent in the dining room. It is carried out in the same color scheme with the headset. It has contrasting colors of shelves and facades. Such a decision attracts the attention of all those present.
If the style means "preservation of antiquity", designers develop models with cracks, chips, scuffs. The technique of artificial aging is popular in the interior of country houses.

Interior design of a dining room in a private house, apartment
A separate dining room in the interior design of a house seems to us an innovation. In fact, this is a well-forgotten old one. During the Soviet period, apartments appeared with small kitchens, in which there was no place for a full-fledged dining room. Until the 19th century, having a separate dining area was considered a sign of good taste.
Project by Veronika Solovieva
Dining room layout options
Dining room - a room in the house intended for eating. Traditionally for today's society, it's just a table with chairs somewhere in the corner, in the kitchen. This part of the house is unfairly deprived of attention in design. After all, it also carries a certain functionality.
The interior of the dining room reflects the owner's lifestyle and habits. Therefore, according to the location in the house can be divided into:
- separate dining room,
- kitchen and dining room,
- kitchen-living room with dining area.
Project by Darya Bikunova
Separate dining room
In the Middle Ages, a whole floor in the house was given over to the dining room to show the status of the owner. Now they do it for their convenience and allocate one room. Such an idea is suitable for interior design of a dining room in a private house or provided that the apartment has extra square meters. The advantage is that you can receive a large number of guests and effectively set the table. Minus: most likely, the dining room will be used only for special occasions or Sunday dinners.
A private room is a great option if you often receive guests and a solemn atmosphere for a reception is important to you. And also if it is customary in your family to gather at a common table for every meal.
Project by Veronika Solovieva
Kitchen-dining room
The most common arrangement type. Traditionally, the kitchen simply allocates space for a dining group. This is a way out for owners of small-sized housing. Two rooms unite and zone the space.
Suitable for those who like to cook and gather the whole family at the table for everyday meals or who do not have the opportunity to separate the dining room. The kitchen-dining room is made in interiors for small families who need a small dining area.
Project by Olga Dorokhova
Kitchen-living room with dining area
The design combines the functions of cooking, eating and relaxing. In a private house or apartment, it is possible by demolishing a wall or combining it in one space.
In such a room you can hold sumptuous feasts, fun parties. You don’t need to sit at the table all the celebration, you can sit on a soft sofa and at the same time remain in the company. For large families, this is a great way to combine life and communication with children. Of the minuses: it will not be possible to retire in the living room and a mess in one place means a mess everywhere.
Project by Evgeny and Maria Latyshev
Organization of the dining room
At first it may seem that you can't think of anything interesting in the design of the dining room. Set up a table with chairs and you're done. A common mistake is not to pay attention to this zone. It has the same function as all the others. Let it not play a major role in the interior, but it is the final touch in a harmonious design. The wrong style of furniture or its placement can spoil the whole picture. Therefore, we will analyze the components of a successful project in an apartment and a private house.
Project by Inna Malova
Planning decision
The concept of the dining room and its appearance depend on this. Determine its location according to your needs. If this is a separate room, then you can choose any style. If combined with a kitchen or living room, make the same design.
Any combination of functions in one place implies zoning. For this technique, you can use both partitions and furniture. It is not necessary to completely demolish the wall during redevelopment. You can make an open opening, which will add air and space, but at the same time there will be separation.
Place the dining group in the kitchen-living room between the cooking and rest areas. So much more practical. If a private house has a panoramic wall with access to the terrace, place a table in front of it. It will turn out very atmospheric and unusual.
Project by Maxim Lapshin and Maria Kosolapova
It's a good idea to make a dining room in the hall. This is especially true for apartments with a small kitchen.
With limited square meters, the dining area can be placed in a corner and linear version. Instead of a window sill, make a tabletop with bar stools. On one side of the table, put a bench or original bench. This will increase the number of places for guests. In larger rooms or a private house, you can install a table in the center of the room. Add a bar counter, an island or a U-shaped kitchen set, which is convenient for breakfast and snacks.
Project by Inessa Ternova
Finishes and colors
The dining room is considered a residential area, so there are no restrictions on the choice of materials for design. Except when it's a small kitchen and the wet area is very close. Then ceramic tiles and thick vinyl wallpapers on non-woven base are suitable.
The finish depends on the chosen style and color scheme. In a separate room, walls in one tone look spectacular, and accents can be made with decor and furniture. Most often, the table is in the middle, which already stands out.
Use different textures and colors for zoning united rooms. The dining area can be distinguished by wallpaper, decorative brick, plaster or clapboard. The table against the background of such a wall looks original.
Project by Artem Gorenechev
Lighting
Light is one of the methods of zoning. He is also able to increase the space, change colors, highlight interesting textures. The dining room needs proper lighting.
The light should be soft and slightly subdued. Enough lamps with a power of 50W.
Light fixtures are ideally placed above the dining table. Designers advise hanging at a distance of 170 cm from the floor or 70 cm from the countertop. This arrangement will not interfere and shine directly into the eyes. If you are building a private house for yourself, then be sure to design natural lighting.
Project by Marina Trach
Dining room furniture
Of course, the main objects of the dining room are the dining table and chairs. The most popular table options are round and long rectangular. They are often found in private homes. For small spaces, choose oval and corner. There are also semicircular models with one straight edge that is attached to the wall.
An island or a peninsula, a bar counter, in continuation of the worktop or instead of a window sill, are suitable for the kitchen-dining room.
Made of materials, wood is a classic. Modern styles use glass and plastic. For luxurious designs, stone countertops are also available.
The transforming table is convenient for large companies. If the area allows, the dining group is best placed in the center. This will provide free access to the table from all sides. For a small kitchen, a good option is a window seat.
Project by Maxim Lapshin and Maria Kosolapova
Dining room chairs are not only functional furniture, but decor. If square meters allow, you can choose massive chairs, with armrests or semi-chairs. Banquettes and ottomans give uniqueness to design.
In a modest room, chairs should be light and compact. For a small kitchen, you can put a corner dining set. The built-in sofa on one side of the table looks original. It is not necessary to make a niche, you can simply put high racks or cabinets on the sides.
Many people have forgotten about such attributes as sideboard, console and cabinet. This furniture is designed to store festive dishes, textiles and cutlery. More often used for separate dining rooms in private homes.
Project by Vlad Sedov
Decor
Dining room interior design also has the right to be boring. A symphony of textures and facades, beautiful textiles and an unusual form of furniture can be found in this area.
- Textile. Curtain waterfall and small cushions on chairs. Napkins and tablecloths, an elegant path in the middle of the table. The carpet zones the space.
- Lighting. Use crystal or metal, bright colors and unusual shapes to match your style. Floor lighting will add charm to the space.
- Furniture. Make your chairs stand out: choose upholstered models in matching colours. High backs give luxury. Showcases or high cabinets with stained glass become decor along with beautiful dishes.
- Additional decor. Pictures and posters fit perfectly into the interior of the dining area. A small room can be visually expanded with mirrors. Biofireplace add coziness and tranquility.
Dining room is the best place to showcase your collections. It will be interesting for guests to consider and discuss them at the meal. A collection of wine can be arranged on an open shelf, and a trifle can be laid out in showcases. In a private house, you can put a piano or a large grandfather clock with a cuckoo.
Project by Olga Vdovina

Dining table size tips
The right size of the dining table not only brings convenience, but also harmoniously fits into the interior. First of all, you need to determine for how many people the dining area. For a small family and frequent guests, a transforming table is perfect. Extra chairs can be placed around the room. For a large family, choose a table that is large enough for everyone to have enough space. But for combined rooms, you need to take into account the proportions. A huge table can spoil the interior and become a place to store unnecessary things.
Project by Vlad Sedov
Calculation formula
According to the laws of ergonomics and etiquette, there should be 60x35 cm for each person at the table. This allows you to put a dinner plate, cutlery on the sides and the necessary wine glasses. Approximately 20 cm must be left in the center of the table for dishes and decanters.
Table size according to the number of persons:
Number of persons | Square table size cm | Round table diameter, cm |
4 | 90*90 | 110 |
6 | 150*90 | 130 |
8 | 200*110 | 150 |
10 | 260*110 | 170 |
12 | 320*110 |
Add 75 cm on all sides from the edge of the table to the wall or other furniture to the indicated measurement. This distance is necessary to make it comfortable to move the chair and get up.
Styles for the dining room
Anna Krivonozhkina's project
Classic
A chic crystal chandelier above the dining table is a must in a classic style. The table itself is made of wood.
General decoration in soft colours. In modern classics, stone and metal can also be used.
The main components of the classics are modesty and muffledness. Curtains are selected from multi-layered fabric, canvases are symmetrically draped. Paintings with landscapes, different-sized vases, a composition of delicate flowers on the table are welcome.
Project by Alexey Ivanov
Art Deco
Art Deco style turns the room into a grand dining room. The style is characterized by luxurious furniture and decoration. The interior is decorated in neutral colors: white, black, beige, gray, brown. Accents are placed in gold, silver, red and burgundy.
Expensive natural materials, wood, stone, natural leather prevail in the design. In furniture and decoration, use mirrors, varnished and glossy surfaces. The highlight will be crystal tableware, arranged in stained-glass windows with backlight.
Project by Evgeny and Maria Latyshev
Minimalism
A laconic interior that pays attention to functionality. Monochrome, strict furniture, free space, ascetic decor are the hallmarks of a minimalist interior.
It is better to make the walls plain and play with texture. Alternate matte with glossy, rough with smooth. It is permissible to combine different textures: concrete, porcelain stoneware, natural linen, wood, metal.
Project by Marina Trach
Country
Country is characterized by a lot of textiles. Chairs or a small bench, decorated with pillows, are placed at the table. A tablecloth or path is selected on the tabletop. The decor is complemented by curtains, carpets.
Country furniture made of dark and light wood. In the decoration of the walls, lining and wallpaper with a pattern are used. Choose from floral prints, stripes and checks. A fireplace is traditionally installed in a country house.
Project by Irina Novikova
Scandinavian style
Nordic style is characterized by simplicity, functionality, cold palette, restraint in decor. The smaller the room, the less furniture.
Scandinavian interior does not tolerate heaps and disorder. There should not be glossy and shiny surfaces - only matte.
Use light pastel colors for decoration and decor. The walls are not necessarily only white, light gray, pale blue, olive are also suitable.
The base material must be light wood. For textiles and upholstery, choose linen, cotton, and other textured fabrics. For an accent, you can use bright colors, geometric shapes and patterns, a woolen carpet and fluffy pillows.
Project by Elena Tsareva
Loft
Industrial style fits perfectly into the studio space. Brick, concrete, cement, decorative plaster, stone are suitable for finishing. Such cold and brutal materials need to be diluted with bright, but at the same time complex colors: burgundy, indigo, olive, mustard. The contrast with delicate pink removes the masculine character in the interior. Luminaires can be made in metal or be without a ceiling.
