If you’re worried your home’s facade is looking a little drab, adding a portico can give it the facelift it needs. A portico provides you that luxe feeling of walking through a grand entryway without breaking the bank, and (bonus!) protects your front door from harsh weather, keeps you dry when you’re fumbling for your keys in the rain, and can even add curb appeal.

What Is a Portico?

A portico is a little roof that goes above your front door and is supported by columns. They date back to ancient Greece, when columns were a staple of architecture and found anywhere and everywhere. This included the front door, as it’s the first thing that people will walk through to enter your home. In a sense, porticos have increased curb appeal since the 4th century B. C.E.!

What Are Porticos Made of?

There are two main portions to the portico: the roof, which goes over the door and patio, and the columns to give support.

The roofing materials are up to you. You can choose asphalt shingles, metal shingles, clay shingles, concrete shingles—you have the pick of the lot with your portico. The goal of the portico is to help increase your curb appeal, so pairing it with your current roofing material is a good idea.

As for the columns, you can choose fiberglass, wood, or concrete. They’re all relatively versatile in the way you can style them. If pests are common in your area, aim for a non-wood option. This way, your home gets an upgrade and you ensure that you don’t have any new tenants living rent-free in your columns.

What Are the Benefits of Porticos?

When it comes to porticos, the main perk is the added curb appeal. You’re likely to get an immediate return on investment thanks to its addition.

Porticos also protect the front door and stoop from the sun, rain, and snow. This can help prevent natural wear and tear that occurs over the years, and keep your front door’s paint from peeling off.

Are There Any Cons to Porticos?

Porticos do take up space, which you may find you’re already limited on. While they can give you the protection you’re looking for, you might find your home’s entrance is more cramped than before.

The portico is also front-and-center of your home, so going with a style that doesn’t fit the rest of your house may actually decrease your property value. This is something you’ll need to discuss with the local building contractor you hire so you can determine what will look best for your home.

How Much Does It Cost to Build a Portico?

On average, you’re looking at paying around $2,500 to $4,000 for a 40-square-foot portico. The cost fluctuates based on the material you use for the roof and columns.

And don’t just stop at the portico—take the opportunity to spruce up your entrance in other ways, too. Some changes you can make yourself include installing a new type of front door, or giving it a new coat of paint.

Portico FAQs

How do you maintain a portico?

Spoiler alert: taking care of a portico is pretty low maintenance! The most important aspect is to make sure your portico roof has proper drainage—you don’t want the water to seep into the wood and cause wood rot. To clean the columns, simply use a wet cloth to remove dirt and scuff marks.

How long do porticos last?

The portico roof will last anywhere from 25 to 60 years, depending on the material used.

As for the columns, so long as you maintain them and seal them regularly, they’ll last just as long as the roof. Sealing should occur every one to three years, depending on how harsh the weather is in your area. Places including Arizona and Montana will find they need to seal more often than somewhere such as Oregon and Colorado, where temperatures tend to be a little more moderate.

What are other ways to increase my home’s curb appeal?

Outdoor lighting is a way to boost your home’s curb appeal. They offer a sense of security when they let you know when something is moving outside.

You can install a new front door as well. Choosing a door that compliments the ornate features of a portico will add the eye-catching factor that many are looking for when it comes to curb appeal.

Today I am sharing how to add a portico roof over a front door entrance which is an easy way to add curb appeal to your home. A portico is a covered porch over a front door.  It’s amazing how building a portico (a little roof) and two new columns can transform the front of a home!  If you missed the start of our front door remodel, you can see the start of our new portico project here .

This front door portico was installed at our old house and I recently updated it for 2022 as porticos are currently trending on google right now! With real estate being so expensive, many are opting to remodel or renovate and exterior renovations are on the rise. Hopefully you find some great front door entrance ideas here today and are inspired to add a portico roof over your front door (or even a side or backdoor).

Portico Roof Installation

Here is the before with no roof over the front door entrance:

I searched google and pinterest for portico ideas wow, there are so many ideas online! It’s easy to get overwhelmed with so many designs so I only saved designs that showed a front door similar to mine. We were not going to remodel the entire front of the house, just the front entrance. I didn’t make sense to save images that were nothing like our front door entrance.

The first step to installing a portico is to frame your stairs.

We framed around the existing cement step with 2×4’s and 2×10’s.

Initially, we were going to remove the cement step but decided that it was in decent shape and would provide a solid base for the new wider step, so we left the existing stairs.

How much does a portico cost?

The cost of building a portico depends on the size and building materials you use along with any manual labor you need to hire. Our front door portico roughly cost $2000 but we did a lot of the work ourselves.

We chose a maintenance free vinyl decking to create our new step.

The vinyl decking was installed on top of the 2×4 frame.

Portico Roof Benefits

Last week I shared front door portico designs that showed varying roof sizes and styles depending on the type of front door. A portico not only provides curb appeal but a roof over a front door provides protection from the weather.  It’s always nice if it’s raining or snowing, to have a covered door while you are trying to get inside your home. This is a huge benefit!

Ultimately, we decided on the round italian style column portico.   The round columns added softness to the square portico roof line and provided visual appeal from the curb.

We did enlist a little help with the installation of the columns and roof over the door. We DIY most everything around our home but occasionally, you need muscle for projects, more muscle than I have! ha.

I found it fascinating how they made a simple rectangular box as the supports for the columns. I have never seen a portico built before so this was a first for me. It’s always nice to see how things are actually made and what is underneath the “pretty” end product.

We used special brackets for fastening the wooden box to the house and new columns.

They used wooden shims on top of the columns to brace the support beams (rectangular box) until they got it level, then they removed them.

The front door portico looks kind of cool right?

Front door portico

As you can see the roof over the front door entrance is taking shape and the added curb appeal from the new portico roof is amazing.

We decided to add a decorative inset on the front facing part of the new roof which I will share next week. It was a last minute decision but it took the roof line from nice to wow!

As you can see, it’s coming along nicely and the two toned shingles add so much color and texture to an otherwise, boring roof.

I love the side view of the portico over the front door and it’s amazing how the roof over the door entrance adds so much curb appeal to the home.

UPDATE: See our new Portico REVEAL (here)  It’s finished!

We still need to finish up the details and rip out the old door. The existing door is a solid wood gorgeous door with beautiful detail but unfortunately, that’s about all it has to offer. It basically lets in all the cold air during the winter months and you can see the outside through the cracks when you walk by it. Not good! I have plans for that door though, possibly a DIY headboard for our master bedroom. Stay tuned, the portico reveal is soon!
