Traditional English garden in Japan | Gardens and parks of the world
Photo: Barakura English Garden
In order to find out what an English garden is, the inhabitants of the Land of the Rising Sun go to the region known as the Japanese Alps in spring, summer and autumn. 20 years ago, Barakura English Garden was opened on the tops of Mount Tateshina - a garden that reproduces not only the style, but also the spirit of foggy Albion.
View plan
-
Kei Yamada, director of Barakura English Garden, florist, gardener, designer
The idea of creating a traditional English garden in Japan belongs to Mr. Hohei Yamada, founder of Creative Arts Ltd, a clothing and accessories company, and a devoted follower of the Arts and Crafts movement. It originated while traveling in Europe looking for inspiration for the Rosy Life fashion brand created by his daughter Kay Yamada. The name of the garden is directly related to this most popular brand in Japan: Bara-iro no Kura-shi in Japanese means “pink life”. For ease of pronunciation, the company's customers have shortened it to Bara-Kura.
In order to make the garden authentic, it was decided to invite famous and experienced designers, gardeners, collectors of rare and interesting plants from the UK.
In 1989, English designer John Brooks came to Japan. He was involved in the design and concept of the Barakura garden, brought in carpenters from Chatsworth to create garden furniture, brought seeds and plants from British nurseries.
Despite many problems associated with both climatic conditions, primarily extreme temperatures (from -18 °C to -20 °C in winter and from +35 °C to +40 °C for 3-4 months in summer), and with the transport of plants from Britain to Japan, the garden gradually took shape. At 19It was opened to visitors in 1990 and immediately won public recognition, showing how enthusiastic the Japanese are for the West, in particular the UK - its lifestyle and garden design.
The 21st Century Dome, designed by Mr. Robert Adam, is installed at the entrance to the garden. High mountain clematis grows here. The Rose Tunnel is covered with 'Paul's Himalayan Musk' roses, turning a soft pink when in bloom. In the Lace Garden, it is also called White, all plants have lace-shaped flowers, leaves and branches. In the Herb Garden, thyme, sage, basil, lemon mint, etc. are planted along with classic roses. Large pots with strawberries and rhubarb, a beautiful arch and an obelisk with roses are its additional decorations.
The Long Fringed Garden has pergolas with Dorothy Perkins roses on both sides. Moreover, roses of old varieties are also planted along one line, and shady trees, bushes and perennials blooming from spring to autumn along the other. The meadow has several kinds of daffodils, fritillaria (symbol of the Barakura garden), dark purple tulip "Queen of Night" and other bulbous and perennial plants, planting instructions are given by Miss Kei Yamada herself. Representatives of the Alpine flora are collected in the Rocky Garden. Many years ago, large stones were brought here from England.
Walking along winding paths, visitors can enjoy the changing sights, colors and scents of plants in the Lower Fringed Garden. In spring, hyacinth exudes a particularly attractive aroma. In this part there is a small garden presented in 2002 at the Chelsea flower show. This is Kei Yamada's project "Memories of a Meadow in Tateshino". He received a silver medal, the first high honor awarded to a Japanese designer at the Chelsea Flower Show. To create the impression of the natural landscape of her homeland, Kay used the daylily, or daylily, which covers the foothills in abundance every summer.
More than 100,000 bulbs of specially brought English bluebells have been planted in the Land of Bluebells, and every year in June they form a large blue carpet.
About three years ago, the Gravel Garden was opened to visitors, in which plants are planted suitable for dry and well-drained soil: spurge, echinacea, carnation, rudbeckia, geranium, stonecrop, wormwood, miscanthus, etc. The best pictures open here during flowering 'Sir Paul Smith' roses.
In June, during the annual flower show in the Barakura Garden, almost all varieties of roses begin to bloom. And when clematis rise, blue delphiniums and pink lupins, lilies and hostas, supported by fragrant herbs, even inveterate skeptics have no doubt that they are in an English garden.
John Brooks
In 1989, Mr. Brooks, a member of the Royal Horticultural Society of Great Britain, was first invited to Baracura to give lectures and master classes. In 2010, he again visited the garden.
A few reflections of Mr. Brooks on the English garden and work in Japan.
• What do I mean by an English garden? This is what I always ask a client about: “What do you imagine when it comes to an English garden?”. Usually you get something between Sissinghurst Castle Garden, Hidcote Garden and Great Dixter Manor Garden - all these are tourist places. However, the Yamada family visited my garden in Sussex and they liked it too.
• An English garden is overflowing with plant material. But at the same time, he is not subjected to too much care. Many shrubs, perennials and deciduous plants of various colors and contrasts.
• What inspired me to design an English garden in Japan? This was my first trip to Japan, whose culture is so different from ours. With that in mind, I think what inspired me was the enthusiasm of the clients for the garden, as well as their courage to ask me to take on the job and give advice.
• I am well aware that this is a historical precedent. In my work, I am very interested in expressing the "spirit of the place" that my client needs, and also in understanding other forms of art, especially painting and sculpture. We have moved away from classical symmetry and now we know what abstraction is. I would like to express it in appropriate places. I'm not particularly interested in trends and fashion.
• When choosing plants, I want them to like the place where they are and grow. However, just the fact that they can grow doesn't mean they are eligible for any position. Some plants themselves indicate their origin so much that they look out of place. Tree ferns and eucalyptus trees are examples in this country. But this is a very personal prejudice!
• Until recently, I was convinced that most of the garden needed to be pruned, thinned, or even cleared to look good. All this is included in the concept of "care of the garden." The Japanese have a very different view on this. They will comb the pine needles with a comb, but they will not saw off a branch, even if it is necessary.
• I have no idea what the word "Barakura" means...
• The garden owners hired a chief gardener from England to work in Barakura. But the gardeners could only work for two years while the visa was valid, so they were constantly changing. But now, I think, the Japanese have abandoned these attempts!
Andy McIndoe
In 2009 Andy McIndoe participated in the Barakura Flower Show. He held a master class and delivered two lectures. We asked Andy to share his experience with Barakura Garden.
“Barakura is a respected and only school in Japan that teaches English style gardening. About 600 students aspire to become masters under the guidance of Miss Kay, who helps students learn all aspects of the profession - from the basics of cultivation to creative gardening ...
The English Garden Center Boutique sells plants, furniture, pots and accessories. In the part where the containers are located, the style of the city of Wichford prevails and its traditions are maintained. Roses ‘Peter Beales’ are very popular here, they are considered one of the main elements of the garden in the English style…
Lavender and other sun-loving plants that like good drainage do not grow well in the Barakura garden due to heavy rainfall. Roses and perennials planted last year bloomed late as the previous winter was very cold. But despite everything, Barakura looks like a real English garden.
Here you quickly forget that you are away from home. The people are very friendly, charming, enthusiastic and good-natured.”
