20 Beautiful Porch Railing Ideas
White Sands Design/Build
At first thought, porch railings serve a strictly utilitarian purpose. After all, nobody wants to tumble off of their porch and have all their outdoor furniture go right down with them. But, in reality, style matters when it comes to your porch's railing.
Not only does it act as that perfect finishing touch to that small, outdoor space that's right next to your front door, but it can also set the tone for your interior design style. But, with so many materials and styles to choose from, finding the right porch railing for your home can feel a tad overwhelming.
To help, we're sharing 20 beautiful porch railing ideas. Thanks to these examples, you'll be able to take your outdoor space to the next level.

Finding Lovely
Want to give your front porch a historical edge? Add a set of sawn baluster railings. Originally designed for Victorian homes, this porch railing style features a decorative pattern that repeats.
While sawn baluster railings could look good with just about any color palette, we particularly love how Jackie Hempel of Finding Lovely paired hers with a cheery teal door. The candy-coated scheme and old-fashioned railings style harken back to those classic Queen Anne abodes.

Farmhouse on Boone
If you're looking for a porch railing style that can withstand time and trends, you can't go wrong with a classic vertical wooden style. Not only can it make your porch appear larger and airier, but it can also act as a blank canvas so it won't upstage your plants and outdoor furniture. Don't believe us? Just take a look at this idyllic iteration from Farmhouse on Boone.

Looking for a subtler trip down memory lane? Consider adding a turn baluster style to your porch. At first glance, this style looks incredibly similar to that traditional, vertical railing type—however, the slight ornamentation gives this option something extra.
Another perk: it's surprisingly versatile. Check out this space from Liz Marie Galvan, who regularly decks out her porch with seasonal decorations.

For an innovative option that bridges the gap between old and new, check out Chippendale porch railings. Named after a famous furniture maker called Thomas Chippendale, this style prides itself on a cool, geometric repetition—and, more times than not, Chippendale porch railings create a cool, X-shaped pattern.
While this type of porch railings can be used with any type of architecture, they deftly juxtapose a colonial space. Let this home from 3 North show you how it's done.

Gretchen Black of Greyhouse Design found the perfect Chippendale railing style that's classic and modern in equal measure. The geometrical pattern hits a sweet spot between modern farmhouse and Art Deco glamour.

Bria Hammel Interiors
When in doubt, X marks the spot. Designer Bria Hammel offers plenty of Southern hospitality, thanks to this criss-cross railing style.
"A front porch is the first impression guests have of your home," she explains. "We wanted to make sure that ours drew our family, friends, and neighbors in so that they felt comfortable to sit, chat, and even enjoy a glass of lemonade or a cocktail. I’m always drawn to the Southern style and aesthetic, so we wanted to keep that in mind when designing this outdoor extension of our home. It’s everything functional and beautiful."

White Sands Design
A vertical porch railing might be undeniably classic, but it can slip into ubiquitous territory quite easily. If you're looking for a way to offset this traditional type, pair it with a larger porch. For example, this wraparound porch from White Sands Design strikes a happy medium between subtle and statement.

Design: A Small Life; Photo: Melanie Gnau
Anyone whose design taste falls on the subtler end of the spectrum will find a lot to love about a cable porch railing. This style—as seen in A Small Life's One Room Challenge—is slim, but will pop against your home's facade. For a rustic take on this classic style, take a cue from Melanie Gnau, who paired the cable with tonal slabs of wood.

Livvy Land
Or, if your style skews more minimalist, a cable porch railing can still deliver. In this space from Livvy Land, a light wood perimeter and cable weave are paired with woven furniture, plants, and plenty of twinkle lights.

Paper & Stitch
Why settle for one porch railing style when you can enjoy a few? At her former Georgia home, Paper & Stitch blogger Brittni Mehlhoff selected a wood and metal porch railing. "It was one of our favorite spots to sit in the late afternoon with my son and listen to music," she explains. "The footprint was small, so we kept things minimal with the furniture and plants. But, the railings let in a lot of light that made the space feel much bigger than it was. "

Bluebird Kisses
Calling all modernists: you're going to fall in love with glass porch railings. Though glass does require some upkeep—for starters, this material is prone to smudges and scratches—this is a surefire way to give your entryway a modern edge. For Bluebird Kisses' Toronto condo, the glass acts as a blank canvas, letting the slotted wood and brick details do all the talking.

Jenna Sue Design
Another way to rework your traditional porch railing is by experimenting with its finish. White is often the go-to shade for porches, however, raw wood will give your outdoor space a rustic, earthy vibe. Decked out with a dark walnut stain, Jenna Sue's setup takes porch living to the next level.

Once Upon a 1912
We don't know who needs to hear this, but your porch railings don't have to be perfectly symmetrical. Case in point: this stylish space from Kay of Once Upon a 1912.
Since one side porch shares a wall with the home's facade, the blogger adorned only one side with a traditional railing. But, she offsets the asymmetrical railings with matching loveseats, sconces, and topiaries. The result? A porch that packs on the visual intrigue.

Marie Flanigan
A porch railing style has the power to bring your home's design front and center. Take this home by Marie Flanigan, for example. Here, the designer used a mix of vertical wooden railings and brick pillars to emphasize its Craftsman attitude.

If you're looking for a classic porch railing style that isn't as ubiquitous as typical slabs of wood, give metal a try. Not only can metal be treated to hold up nicely against the elements—a must when dealing with anything that belongs outside—but it can also be reimagined in a handful of styles. In this space from Decorilla Affordable Interior Design, the twisted railings offer a villa-esque vibe.

For many, an enclosed front porch is the best of both worlds. The home's adjacent walls define the porch—and take on the role of the railings in the process. This Napa-based farmhouse by Mindy Gayer is the perfect example, proving that less can oftentimes be more.

RushMeHome
Do you need to have porch railings? Not necessarily. Sometimes, the boldest design move you can make is forgoing the railings altogether. But, just because your porch is bare doesn't mean it has to be boring. Rashmi of RushMeHome decked out her railing-free porch with potted plants, an evergreen wreath, and a charming welcome mat.

Hooligans broke up the picket at Starstroy. Sakhalin.Info
09:22 September 19, 2006.
Dmitry Kholmogorov
Special Correspondent, Society, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk
What happened yesterday at the Starstroy office on Pobeda Avenue in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk evoked different feelings in the audience - from laughter to indignation. At two o'clock in the afternoon a picket of the "greens" began there. About 3 dozen young people in T-shirts the color of young grass disembarked in an organized manner from a large bus and quickly unfurled posters in front of the porch. On them - "We demand an immediate stop to the activities of Starstroy" and "Starstroy sucks." nine0003
The same thing, with slight variations like "we demand disclosure of environmental crimes" by the same company, soon sounded in the fervent rhythm of fan chants. The parade was commanded by a painfully familiar guy with a megaphone in one hand and a cheat sheet in the other. This same Antoine has already been "shown" at a dozen stocks of various kinds, from automotive to environmental. Probably, some passages from his own repertoire "massive entertainer" considers especially successful, because the chanted "the island-fish is only one, we won't let you destroy it" sounded like a sore déjà vu. nine0003
It is worth recognizing that, in general, the idea was colorful. A garland of green balloons was covered with a cape of the same color with the inscription "Sakhalin". Three guys in plastic capes with hoods, while shouting "stop ruining and milking our island," "milked" a black liquid out of gloves tied to the structure. Antoine, looking like a Gauleiter, proudly paced around the site, bursting balloons with a bang and setting the rhythm into a megaphone, from time to time emitting piercing trills and conducting shouts of "uuuu !!!", which young people were especially inspired with. nine0003
The reaction of "starstroevtsev" was unequivocal. At first, people went out onto the porch to take pictures of what was happening on the phone, but soon they got bored of it and even the guard left him. Occasionally, foreigners who came to the office squeezed their way through the crowd absolutely indifferently, our compatriots grinned and shouted provocative sentences like "if you give me a thousand, will you leave? You are interfering with work ... ".
Valery Mozolevsky, the manager for socio-economic issues of Starstroy, tried to enter into a dialogue with the protesters. But his arguments that the company is not engaged in oil production, all work on the pipeline is carried out in compliance with the laws and under the constant control of government agencies, that it is pointless and stupid to protest against something that you do not know and have not seen yourself, picketers who are not particularly savvy in the matter met only friendly cry. nine0003
For the first time, Valery Pavlovich waved his hand and left, and when he returned an hour and a half later, he was carrying a package of mineral water - "you must be tired of shouting, have a drink." While he turned away, trying to prove something to the guys, screaming in ecstasy, similar to the sectarian, one of them doused him from behind with water. This mocking and disgusting trick did not bring the desired result - Mozolevsky was not offended, but continued his attempts to persuade. The militiamen from those standing in the "protection of order" took the "water cannon" aside, but after a couple of minutes he returned. nine0003
In general, apparently, the picketers were expecting a conflict. Mozolevsky says that the guys did not have permission for the action on the territory of Starstroy. But no one is going to kick them out. And while the manager was giving comments to the operators of television companies, the denouement came. Five or six big guys in masks of various colors began to disperse the picket with long wooden sticks and metal clubs with balls on the end. One of the attackers rushed to the journalists - "take away the cameras!", he was besieged by an FSB officer who was watching the order, barking "I'll take your head off!" nine0003
There, at that time, a local battle broke out. One of the picketers, in contrast to his “comrades-in-arms” who jumped in all directions, some on the bus, some through the fence, got into a brawl with the “mask-show” and managed to “light up” them a couple of times. The "gangsters" who did not expect such a fighting pressure from the boy could not defeat him, broke a stick on him in parting and ran away into a minibus waiting for them without numbers with white curtains covering the entire interior. Finita la comedy.
Valery Mozolevsky is sure that what happened is a comedy organized by the picketers themselves. This version is even supported by the fact that the bus, which had been peacefully standing for almost two hours on the edge of the parking lot, came close to the picket a minute before the massacre. Many of the overclocked technically jumped into it and after a few minutes they disappeared from the battlefield. nine0003
- We would never "throw under the tanks" our guys, - says a person voicing a different version of events, who introduced himself as the organizer of the action Roman Kuznetsov, - I then caught them all over Pobeda, Antoine's phone was broken. I think it's Starstroy. Or some third force that wants to "substitute" the "greens".
With common sense, you can find logic in this version. Anyone could find out about the action. For "self-flagellation" everything was organized too clumsily - these sticks, the bus that arrived on time, the brutal cries of the "masquerade". The option of dispersing the action by Starstroy does not stand up to criticism - it was enough for the guards to simply tell them to get out. nine0003
"Third force"?..
It touches the behavior during the "dispersal" of policemen. The sergeants "enforcing order" stared at what was happening as if they were a tough action movie. All they needed was popcorn. A couple of meters away from one of them, a picket fighter was "kneaded" with sticks, and the policeman was only fiddling with his cap. There was not a single attempt to detain the attackers, which would solve the problem of identifying the initiators of the dispersal. The ATC is now "checking". Does not give official comments. The ugly scene that played out at Starstroy, according to eyewitnesses-siloviki, "pulls" at least for "hooliganism. " It's also very similar to "mass riots". One way or another, "who needs it" will probably draw conclusions. The political life of the island is beginning to look too disgusting. nine0003

Evlanov ignored the picket of environmentalists (+ photo) – Delovaya Gazeta.Yug
On June 25, a picket was held in Krasnodar in defense of the green spaces of the city, organized by the public organization "Ordinary People" and EcoWatch for the North Caucasus. About 40 people took part in the action. Representatives of EcoWatch complained that the administration of Krasnodar turned the venue of the
agreed-upon public event right before the picket into a construction site. The picket was held near the municipal concert hall of organ and chamber music at 122 Krasnaya Street next to the city administration building. nine0039 Repair work was carried out by the workers of the Kubandorblagostroystvo company. They removed the tiles at the porch of the concert hall, then, using special electromechanical compactors, they compacted the sand under it and laid the same tiles again in their original place. As a result, unbearable conditions were created for the picket, according to the official website of EcoWatch. “Picket participants were forced to stand under the scorching sun on a narrow sidewalk between the work area and the roadway. At the same time, there was a lot of noise at the work site, which also prevented the picket and the work of journalists. Moreover, the workers, apparently on someone's instructions, moved electric seals after the picketers who were trying to find a relatively quiet place on the site allotted to them,” the environmentalists said in a statement. nine0039 Recall, as Delovaya Gazeta reported. Yug”, representatives of EcoWatch invited Mayor Vladimir Evlanov and Chairman of the City Duma Vera Galushko to talk to the participants in advance. But they didn't show up at the picket. Nevertheless , the demands of the rally participants will be conveyed to Yevlanov and Galushko by sending them the resolution adopted at the picket. Resolution contains a requirement to the mayor and chairman of the City Duma of Krasnodar: 1. Impose a moratorium on the implementation of all projects for the development of park areas, public gardens, public areas, water protection zones of reservoirs to make a joint decision with the public on the feasibility of implementing these projects. nine0039 2. Develop a mechanism for the participation of city residents in decision-making on the management of green areas and common areas. 3 . As soon as possible, with the participation of interested public organizations and citizens, develop and adopt a municipal environmental program, part of which should be: - a program for the development of specially protected natural areas in the city of Krasnodar. - a program for the reclamation of city dumps and the environmental rehabilitation of polluted territories and water areas.
