Non-Repeating Mural Wallpaper

When your formal dining room is also your everyday dining area, invest in pieces that deliver both form and function. In this Studio DB-designed space, the built-in velvet banquette is cozy and comfortable, but it also looks dressy.

The same is true for those beautiful chairs from the Socialite Family and artful light fixture from Ladies and Gentlemen Studio. And unusual lighting and beautiful wallpaper are easy ways to add character without taking up surface space. It doesn't get more regal than a de Gournay wallpaper—non-repeating patterns and murals create so much movement and intrigue.

Cheeky and Bright Wallpaper

Tema e Variazioni by Fornasetti livens up this small dining space designed by Jeff Andrews. "After moving in, I realized how much I loved the classic architecture," he says—which is why he decided now to expand the kitchen into the breakfast nook. It's both a classic and youthful, cheeky and polished, thanks to the bright minty green hue with that iconic portrait.

Graphic and Playful Wallpaper

Designed by Studio DB, the modern zig-zagging wallpaper makes this built-in booth pop while also separating it from the rest of the kitchen space for a more intimate and formal feel.

Without a doubt, that modern, sharp-angled print is what gives this dining room its dazzle (thought the tree trunk table and sputnik pendant don't hurt).

Romantic and Old-World-Inspired Wallpaper

Romance and fantasy rule in this dining room designed by the legendary Else de Wolfe. For a similarly robust feel with plenty of depth, extend your wallpaper (or fabric wallcovering, as shown here) into the third dimension with matching curtains and a fabric upholstery trim right at the top of the wall. The floral chandelier, blush-toned linens, and antique gilt framed artwork bring this fanciful room to life—and prove its timelessness.

Fearless and Modern Wallpaper

With a super large-scale print that looks more like a work of art than your everyday wallpaper, this dining room designed by Regan Baker Design is a force to be reckoned with.

Because the deep greens and gold swirls emit an intensity and formality perfect for entertaining, Baker chose more casual furniture to ground the space as family-friendly and approachable.

Light-hearted and Classic Wallpaper

Designer Christopher Maya painted the floors in the breakfast room of a 1930s home with an octagonal honeycomb pattern. The bold color and eye-catching graphic print makes a modern statement in this otherwise traditional dining room.

A chocolate brown and sky blue color scheme grounds the space while the pale cream, pink, and blue floral curtains and wallpaper spread a lightheaded energy throughout the room. The wallpaper and curtains are a custom Tree of Life pattern from the Christopher Maya collection.

Texture-Rich Wallpaper

What could have been an awkward eyesore becomes the striking focal point in this little dining nook and workspace designed by 2LG Studio. That's thanks to the texture-rich wallpaper, which features a digitized collage of torn paper. Stretching from floor to the arch of the ceiling, it doubles as artwork and sets the color scheme for the rest of the room.

Moral of the story? Weird architectural quirks and small spaces can actually be quite beautiful when covered with an eye-catching wallpaper.

"The dining room was our greatest challenge, but it ended up becoming the most exciting room in the house," says designer Sarah Gilbane of this whimsical space.

The theme of the space was vintage Everglades—to fuse the homeowners's New England heritage with their new Palm Beach lifestyle— so decorative artist Brian Leaver painted the palms and flamingos over a grasscloth wallpaper, then created a trompe l'oeil tented ceiling.

"The previously white space was transformed with wallpaper," he explains.

Scandinavian-inspired Floral Wallpaper

The founder of Apartment Therapy's dining room is a piece of Scandinavia in the Hamptons. Inspired by Host restaurant in Copenhagen, Maxwell Ryan wanted warm and minimal Hans Wagner dining chairs. How to choose wallpaper for the dining room: think about beauty, don't forget about functionality!

Share link:

Surely, many of you remember the amazing film adaptation of Mikhail Afanasyevich Bulgakov's immortal story "Heart of a Dog" and the luxuriously emotional scene of the visit of representatives of the house committee to Professor Preobrazhensky during lunch.

Philip Filippovich's final remark, brilliantly presented by the great Yevgeny Evstigneev, can, among other phrases from this outstanding work, claim the status of "winged"! The professor, sincerely indignant at the insane proposal of the house committee members to dine in the bedroom, very emotionally explained that he would dine only in the dining room, exactly where all normal people eat.

The dining room is a room in the house, which for quite a long period of time was undeservedly forgotten on the territory of our country. Indeed, what kind of dining room could we talk about if at first people lived in barracks, “communal apartments” and houses with a corridor system, and then moved to typical Soviet apartments, in which even kitchens often had very modest dimensions. Fortunately, everything is changing and now you will not surprise anyone with the presence of a full-fledged dining room in a city apartment and, especially, in a country house. Therefore, many homeowners have a question about which wallpaper to choose for decorating the dining room in order to make this room truly beautiful, comfortable, convenient and cozy.

At first glance, it may seem that choosing wallpaper for the dining room can be quite easy. I found a wallpaper that matches the color and pattern, glued it and you're done! But the first negative consequences of such a superficial and even frivolous choice of finishing material for the walls of the dining room may appear already a few months after the repair. Therefore, when choosing wallpaper for the dining room, one should not only think about beauty, but also do not forget about the functionality of the wall coverings that will be pasted in this dining room. Especially if, according to the latest trends in interior design, your dining room is combined with a kitchen and living room.

The interior decoration of the dining room must be approached, taking into account the likely scenarios for the operation of this room. Strong and persistent aromas from freshly cooked food, splashes of wine or natural juices, high traffic and periodic occupancy of the room by a large number of people, frequent rearrangement and transformation of furniture (moving chairs, laying out the dining table, etc.

) and other external factors that are significantly enhanced when combining the dining room with the kitchen.

Habitual wallpaper is unlikely to be able to withstand prolonged exposure to the above factors without losing its original appearance. Vinyl or paper wallpapers will absorb the whole bouquet of smells, then exuding a not at all noble “aroma”, incredibly persistent splash marks will not be completely washed off, and the workload of the room with people and the change of scenery with the movement of furniture can cause irreversible damage to ordinary wallpaper. Therefore, for the dining room it is required to choose wallpapers that will not be susceptible to strong odors, will be able to withstand aggressive external influences and not be damaged, and, of course, you should choose real washable wallpapers for the dining room.

All these and many other unique properties combine Wellton and Oscar glass wall papers. They are the best available options for interior decoration of dining rooms in city apartments and country houses.

Wellton and Oscar glass fiber have an amazing ability not to accumulate even very strong odors at all, including tobacco smell and other incredibly persistent household “aromas”. With the right choice of paint, cullet can be washed and cleaned even with the use of household cleaners and rather hard brushes, and if the dirt cannot be cleaned, it is enough to lightly tint the cullet and enjoy their perfect cleanliness. Wellton and Oscar cullets are real anti-vandal wallpapers that will not only protect the walls of the dining room from cracks, but also save them from damage, because it is almost impossible to scratch or tear Wellton and Oscar cullets correctly glued to the walls.

In addition, cullet has an incredibly long service life - more than 50 years, and is a reliable protector of the house from fire, as it is the material of the highest and safest fire class KM1 in the group. All these and other wonderful properties of glass wall paper make them an ideal solution for interior wall decoration in dining rooms and similar combined spaces, combining cooking, eating and just relaxing areas, if the kitchen and dining room are combined in your home with the living room.

How to choose a wallpaper pattern and stick it out of the box

Natalya Preobrazhenskaya, a regular contributor to the Houzz.ru repair and design portal, interior designer and decorator, head of a design studio, shares her experience on how to choose drawing on the wallpaper.

Anna Zalesskaya

I often hear that the owners of standard apartments and designers, when working with "small-sized" apartments, are very limited in their choice of wallpaper. They say that the patterns and colors on the walls of magazine interiors are certainly beautiful, but in some new building they will instantly “eat up” already insignificant volumes. So let's choose a standard beige "rib" and a white plinth to it. Is it really objective? My answer is no

1. Remove corners

From: Valeria Maslova design studio — Find new interior solutions: design ideas

Wallpaper is not only decoration, but also a tool for correcting space.

An active print flowing from wall to wall will help to tactfully disguise the flaws of the room, divert attention from them. This technique works great in rooms with niches, ledges in inappropriate places, trapezoid rooms with a broken perspective.

Even in a tiny bedroom, as in the photo, this technique works great: in the evening in the semi-darkness, the ornament will not interfere, and in the morning it will “cheer you up” as soon as you open your eyes.

From: Berphin Interior — Find original interior design photos: design ideas

In the kitchen-living room in the photo, the wall covered with active wallpaper additionally works to “disguise” the kitchen set, diverting attention from it.

There is an opinion that large and flashy ornaments are contraindicated for small-sized rooms, but let me disagree. The point is not the size of the pattern, but its "degree of presence" in the room.

For example, a tight-fitting contrasting ornament will just work well on one wall even in a compact room - like this bright living room in the photo.

Posted by Douglas Williams Photography — Other Interior Solutions: Living Rooms

For anyone in doubt, it's best to start with a single wall behind the headboard.

Decorate the room, there will be no “ripple” in the eyes of the person lying in bed. But in this case, you will have to rack your brains with the selection of furniture (plain and contrasting with a bright or colorful background).

2. Add wallpaper skirting

From: Odnushechka | Odnushechka — Find original photos of interior design: corridors

Perhaps the most famous way to combine wallpaper is to paste over the wall according to the “dark bottom, white top” principle.

The proportions are usually taken 1:2 (the upper part is twice as large). And two types of wallpaper are combined.

Try to break both rules: change the proportion and combine the wallpaper plinth with any other wall finishing material - paint, wallpaper, mirror panels.

Proportions matter

"Narrow bottom, wide top" technique suitable for rooms with low ceilings; then measure the lower part no more than 1 meter in height. In this case, align the wallpaper line with the floor - otherwise, the non-parallelism in relation to it will immediately catch your eye.

Wide bottom and narrow top are appropriate in spacious and high rooms. Use this method to wallpaper your living room, dining room, or master bedroom to visually "lower" the ceiling.

From: Desatori — Find new interior solutions: bedrooms

When combined horizontally, you can either beautifully paste wallpaper in a room in two colors that contrast with each other, or choose monochrome options with different prints or textures (for example, the top honor " under textiles, ` bottom under plaster).

Author: English interiors — More design ideas: hallways

The combination of wallpaper with wall panels looks noble as in the photo.

What exactly will be at the top and what will be at the bottom is up to you. I'm just trying to show that the 1:2 rule isn't the only way to match wallpapers in a room.

By Wallpaperdirect UK — More Design Ideas: Dining Rooms

Don't forget to cover the horizontal seam of wallpaper with a border - paper, wood slats or ceiling plinth.

The choice depends primarily on the thickness of the wallpaper itself: if the texture and thickness at the junction are approximately the same, then a paper border will do. It will no longer hide a noticeable difference in thickness.

Please note: edging between wallpaper and wall panel can be neutral or actively draw attention to itself, as in the combination in the interior in the photo.

Author: KuzovlevaHome — Other interior design ideas: design ideas

, but there is a place to be. When handled correctly, it even visually expands the space.

I advise you to carefully use a horizontally oriented wallpaper pattern in combination with bright colors and active prints: it will ripple in the eyes. Your choice is monochrome.

From: JayJeffers - Find original interior design photos: kids

canvases with a similar texture and the same width. But their shade often differs either within the same color (monochrome version), or more dramatically, but not too contrastingly. As an option, you can alternate plain stripes and wallpaper with an ornament. As a rule, vertical stripes are more accentuated than horizontal bisects, so the use of vertical stripes on the walls most often acts as a decorative technique in itself.

Do not forget to close the horizontal joint of the wallpaper with a border - paper, wood strips or ceiling plinth.

5. One wall that pleases the eye

From: Victoria Kiorsak — Find new interior solutions: design ideas

Quite a lot we talk about accent walls that attract the eye and decorate the room. Usually they are very active, contrasting with other walls. And that is why the accent wall is advised to be removed from the field of view.

What if the other way around? Buy expensive wallpaper only for the wall that falls into your line of sight. And admire them while lying in bed or sitting on the sofa. At the same time, decorate the other walls in a neutral way - with simple wallpaper or paint.

6. With continuation to the ceiling

Author: Xenia Design Studio — View photos of interior design: bedrooms

Sometimes the role of that very accent wall can be played by ... the ceiling. Pasted over with catchy wallpaper in combination with discreet canvases on the walls, it will probably be too bold a solution for an apartment with a low ceiling.

However, if, for example, you live in an apartment with ceilings from three meters or are looking for an unusual solution for a ceiling in the attic, you can afford it.

Look at the living room in the photo. It would be quite a classic American interior - light, airy, with a clear geometry. But here a floral riot breaks in from above - it looks fantastic.

Author: Laura U, Inc. — More design ideas: dining rooms

Another option is the ceiling as an extension of the accent wall. With the help of a difference in textures or wallpaper colors, you can quite clearly define the dining area in the kitchen or, say, the bed area in the bedroom. If your ceiling is standard 2.65 meters high, then just choose a combination of two types of wallpaper that is not too contrasting. Let it be better that they differ in texture or a barely noticeable ornament. In the bedroom in the photo, the designer added active curtains to smooth out the effect of the visual "overhang" of the ceiling.

From: Elizabeth Interiors — Find original interior design photos: bedrooms

5. Light and dark

ways to work with the geometry of rooms, especially small ones. Depending on the arrangement of furniture, one or two walls in the room can be glued with contrasting dark ones, leaving light ones for the rest. So the room will seem more spacious, because the dark color has the ability to "fall through" - it becomes implicitly close or far.

From: Ahre Fastighetsbyrå - Find new interior solutions: kitchens

A dark wall with a window opening is a winning solution, as it is against the light and does not participate in its reflection. And this means that in lighting the room you do not lose anything.

Author: deakins design group — More interior design photos: bedrooms

To give the room depth and height at the same time, stick dark wallpaper near the windows, and on the wall farthest from the entrance, almost in tone with the lightest floor or ceiling.

From this, the space will seem a little narrower and longer, but for compact square rooms or, for example, attic rooms, this is a good solution.

Author: Xstyle — Exclusive Style — More design ideas: living rooms

6. Wallpaper patchwork

Author: Yashina Maria | Different Rooms - View photos of interior design: bedrooms

If you have 5-6 canvases of different patterns at your disposal, make a panel. The neighborhood of different colors and textures - for example, a combination of smooth and embossed wallpapers, glossy and matte finishes - can give a very interesting decorative effect. In the interior in the photo, the designer cut out pieces of 45x45 cm and made a collage out of them. So if you still have wallpaper rolls from the previous repair or you are limited in funds for a new one, collect "one roll" from your friends and make a trendy wall.
